Tampa Bay's VP & Chief Operating Officer excited for Gold Cup’s first visit to area since 2011
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Having been present from the time the Tampa Bay Rowdies kicked off their inaugural season in 2010, there are few who have seen the resurgence of soccer in Tampa Bay from the perspective of Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Lee Cohen.
As the CONCACAF Gold Cup returns to Tampa Bay for the first time since 2011 when the United States faces Martinique, and Panama squares off with Nicaragua at Raymond James Stadium on Wednesday, the difference is almost night and day.
“It’s funny, we had the Sneaker Soiree that we went to just recently. I said to someone this is absolutely amazing to see the transformation of what in 2009 and 2010, people wrote it off as an afterthought from a soccer town, soccer community to where it is now,” Cohen said. “We have a rabid fanbase that’s just passionate about the sport and a community that’s grown behind it from the youth side – where the numbers are continuing to grow and grow and grow – to a viewership standpoint getting behind not just the Rowdies, but the sport in general. It’s really fun to go out and watch, but also be a part of on a day-to-day basis.”
Joining the USL ahead of the 2017 season, the Rowdies have quickly become one of the league’s marquee attractions with the likes of former England international Joe Cole and German international Marcel Schäfer in their ranks. The club sits third in the Eastern Conference after Thursday night’s 2-0 victory against FC Cincinnati, a game that drew more than 6,000 fans to Al Lang Stadium, and got national attention through its broadcast on ESPNU.

LA's Newest Soccer Club Makes Progress on $350 Million Stadium
One of the newest additions to the Los Angeles sporting landscape is making progress in building a stadium. No, it's not the Chargers or the Rams; it's a team playing football of a different sort.
The Los Angeles Football Club, which will become the 23rd team in Major League Soccer when it makes its debut in 2018, has been advancing construction on the Banc of California Stadium, which will be located in Exposition Park, since the project first broke ground in 2016.
The privately-funded, 22,000-seat, soccer-specific stadium will cost $350 million, according to LAFC Brand and Community Coordinator Ben Goldman, and will include a "safe standing" section for the club's supporters' group.
Renderings of the completed stadium are as impressive as some of the club's star-studded ownership group, which includes the likes of actor Will Ferrell, former Unites States Women's National Team player Mia Hamm and former Lakers player and current President of Basketball Operations Earvin "Magic" Johnson.
Club owners hope construction will be complete in time for the team's inaugural MLS season in 2018.

The Renaissance Vinoy Resort & Golf Club is located in St. Petersburg, Florida.While staying there I had a standard room with a King sized bed in the Guest Tower. My room has two balconies and overlooked the harbour and downtown area. The hotel was opened in 1925 and has a lot of old charm mixed with modern touches. There are various locations on the property to eat with my favourite being the verandah bar off of the lobby along with the lounge chair waiter service poolside. They have a small spa which is rumoured to be getting a large expansion in the next few years. If you are visiting South West Florida you should definitely check out the Renaissance Vinoy Resort & Golf Club in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. www.marriott.com/tpasr
