Rowdies Home Attendance Thread - Game 6 vs. New York Red Bulls 2 [5/18]

Attendance Thread

Huge number on Saturday night (7,210) and the crowd was pretty representative as well. I've counted 7,293 individual seatbacks at Al Lang. That doesn't count the Bayshore Lounge, Berm, Group Section by the Mahaffey end, or the new suites by the Press Box (which I'd estimate could hold anywhere from 300-500 depending on the game). Weather was great, first league home game back in awhile, $10 one-day flash sale, Rays on the road, battle for 1st place...a lot of things going in our favor. The Ticketmaster site had us nearly sold out of reserved seats by Friday night. (Midfield actually had more people than usual.)

All of this said, I'd expect a more conservative crowd this Saturday by looking a Ticketmaster today, but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised...

EDIT: I have to add, this was our biggest announced crowd in the middle of the season (and first over 7k) for the last 6 seasons that I've been tracking (and maybe ever) that wasn't a home opener, home finale, 4th of July fireworks game, or attached to a free concert.

How well did the Rowdies pass the “butts in seats test”? Here’s my estimation

There are 7,293 seat backs in Al Lang by my count

I’d guess there were about 800-1,000 empty seats, which would bring us to around 6,400

The TerrordomeTM (aka “the berm”) probably has about 100-150 people – mostly kids inflicting carnage on each other, but a lot of parents standing (that bridge to the tiki hut always has people lined up standing on it)

The Bayshore Lounge has become a new favorite standing location, maybe 30-40 people or so hang there lately

The group tent on the Mahaffey end, I think holds 40-60

The new suite holds about 20

Then there are always people standing at midfield in the Al Lang corner including an accessible area to the right facing the midfield stand

I think it’s reasonable that there would have been about 300 (but probably more) people in all of these random areas

That would put us at around 6,700 or so on a 7,210 number. Tickets were not available to be purchased in reserved seats by kickoff and we know corporate seats at Midfield always have no-shows (but surprisingly less for this game). Personally I think it meets the smell test of being a pretty reasonable number...even seeing about 1,000 or so unoccupied seats around the stadium...

Just my second game of the season I could make it out to (opener was the first) and goddamn it was good! My boy Juan Tejada came in clutch for me.

My group of 3 got there late, but just in time to see the first goal as we came onto the concourse. We ate pretzels until halftime when we went down to the Bayshore Lounge (which was always the plan, though we did receive some special encouragement to do so from one person).

The Bayshore Lounge fucking rules though. So close to the field, plus the water right behind you and a private bar! I'll definitely be back there next time I get to Al Lang.

EDIT:

I've counted 7,293 individual seatbacks at Al Lang.

You're a legend /u/phat7deuce

It's a sickness

This was my first game and I will say the biggest factor getting me to the stadium was the $10 flash sale. Also a little bit was the battle for first

USL power ratings: May 20, 2019 – Return of the Pure Power! [OC]

Rowdies take the No. 1 spot in both ratings systems (one measuring projected finish, one measuring team quality).

I'm really happy about this and think we've generally played well AND also anticipating the worst, because that's what we do...

For a while I thought the other shoe would drop for the Rowdies... certainly still could, but at the very least you can say they've played to the level to deserve where they stand on the table thus far.

Tejada Nabs Two, Poku Returns, Rowdies Take Top Spot, Collins Reflects on a Year in Charge (OC)

Amazing interview and breakdown.

Jake you're the best, and I hope the Rowdies mgmt is listening! We need more of this around town to help organically build the club. (not attendance has been bad or anything, but I want 10,000+!)

Right now our match program is down right embarrassing. Bring back the opposing club rosters and add an article from the Unsubs and we'll have something great.

Then again, the TBTimes needs help too. Their write up included insights like the RB player not being sent off after a yellow card.... ffs.

Keep it up! I love you guys!!

It's nice to have such a defined system, with a great interchangeability of pieces and parts, but still going about things the same way. The only major tactical shift in formation seems to be whether you have two deeper central midfielders or two forward central midfielders – which seem to flex by the opponent or home/road. We played this game with Poku notated as a deeper MF with Oduro. The heat map and average positions seem to indicate he did lineup that way and it appeared to suit him giving him plenty of space to play into...

J King's Corner- TBR v NYB2 (Week 11) 2-0
Fox in the Box- There's so much that happened in this match, but the obvious storyline coming out is that Juan Tejada established himself as a scoring threat inside the box. His first goal was nothing short of sensational playing a great touch off the chest and whipping in a divine shot coming across his body. His second goal came off making a great run to the far post and getting a great assist from Poku.

Tejada overall still isn't a complete offensive player. No one of the forwards yet has proven to be elite in all facets of the game. But each one of the forwards has their specialties and skills that set them apart. Tejada's hustle is unrelenting as has been documented. He's also a sneaky good passer. If he develops into the Rowdies #1 scoring threat, this could expand on what has been a special year for the Rowdies.

Poku Power has been Reenergized- From what I did see of Poku's Open Cup debut spot, I didn't see or expect what we got from Poku tonight. Poku didn't dominate the game but rather played a cerebral game and picked his spots well. I was most concerned about his touches and his dribble coming into this game because turnovers in the midfield against Baby Bulls is asking for trouble, but it was Poku who was the most calming in the midfield. Poku didn't force the play unless he saw a clear opportunity to do so and it was to his benefit.

I was also impressed with Poku's energy on the defensive side of the ball. He wasn't like Fernandes or Tinari putting pressure on the ball, but he was getting back and marking with the rest of his team. All the weeks of sitting has not jaded Poku. He came out tonight and wanted to earn back a starting role. He certainly made a case.

A Sour Note during a Great Performance- The red card Dominic Oduro received was completely justified. I thought he probably should see red a minute after the tackle and the yellow was given. Oduro has had a notion to throw very poor or late tackles and that's how he's gotten most of the yellows he's gotten this season. It was only a matter of time before a situation like this happened. Oduro had no intentions of injuring McSherry there but it has to be a lesson learned for Oduro that he has to be smarter with angled tackles like that. Hopefully, the injury McSherry suffered isn't serious and he makes a speedy recovery.

Despite that debacle, Oduro was having the best match of his season. He kept an inconsistent Baby Bulls offense from getting deep penetration by pressuring the midfield and getting steals.

Defensive Excellence- The Rowdies defense is a 10-man effort. Tonight there was excellent defensive performances from Oduro, Diakite, Fernandes, and Richards. But it can't be lost on every player in the Rowdies lineup who makes the small plays whether it be in the press or defending in their own half.

Ryan Davis has been on a tear- As I was charting events in the game, I recorded two great Ryan Davis on commentary moments. Davis gave Tejada the fox in the box moniker which was great and forced my hand with my first line (I wanted to go with rumble young man rumble). Davis also had a line after Tejada's second goal about red or white wine.

Lack of depth going forward- The Rowdies lack of depth hasn't hurt them so far, but one position that could hurt them offensively is the right mid. Najem has defensive value as he is a natural wing back but his offensive ability leaves a lot to be desired. He's not a great dribbler or passer.

Ekra has also been out a while with whatever injury he's ailing. There's a lot of depth in the center midfield spot if Poku can play at this level, but Ekra showed so much value on both sides of the ball.

3 matches next week- After the Rowdies host Swope Park it's a quick turn around to play on the road in the third round of the Open Cup against OKC. Then it's another road match in Birmingham. Swope is 17th with one win on the season and -10 goal difference. Birmingham is 12th with -8. OKC is seventh in the west winners of 4 games on the season with a -1 goal differential.

Tejada didn’t have an easy game either from what I saw...they were wise to his speed on offense and his pressing, but he still found a way to make an impact which is a great sign.

Poku looked really good...him taking his defensive responsibility seriously was noted. He had a few really brilliant passes including being part of a great sequence on the Mahaffey end that should have netted a goal...

It was as if Tinari and Poku switched feet. Tinari had the majority of the sloppy touches and forced passes in the midfield tonight.

Rowdies' Tejada goes from "Trialist" to Teammate

Him getting a rest for the first Cup match, like Diakite, tells me Collins is planning on using him as a starter regularly. For the most part, he's still making just as big an impact in the 85th minute as the 1st. Good for him. Leo, Seba, and Diakite are the face of the team so far this year, but this kid is rising and will continue to do so, given the chance.

had a different plan for the roster

Tejada is an exception and gets added late

we are now undefeated

4) Profit

They just posted the interview...great piece!

J King's Corner- TBR v Villages 4-1

Throat on the neck- It's still amazing to see a year removed from the infamous Jacksonville Armada loss that the Rowdies not only are a superior club to a lower division club like the Villages, but they were able to absolutely dominate them with most of their backups on the field. What I liked the most was the throat on the neck mentality where even up 3-1 in the final minute of the game, Leon Taylor charged down the field to win a ball and put the ball in the net on his own. It's the same mentality the Rowdies employed when disposing of Hartford.

How was the second squad?- I wasn't able to devote my full attention to the game as I was at work when the game was on, but I definitely saw a fair bit of Poku, Kone, Felix, Hoppenot, and Allen running around getting some play time on the ball. Steinberger still looks like a starting quality player to me. It seems Tinari has become the primary attacking midfielder which was Steinberger's role and Tinari has a lot of talent. I think Steinberger has been slightly more successful impacting game then Tinari thus far but it's not by a lot.

Poku benefitted from playing a weaker group. The more he played he was able to get in a rhythm and slot some good passes and get some good touches but the sloppiness of his dribbling game is still very much a problem that will keep him out of USL matches.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what's the deal with Hoppenot. There's clearly a lot of on-ball and passing skill in his game but he seems to be very inconsistent. That's the big edge Guenzatti has on him. You know what you're getting from Guenzatti.

OKC Energy next- Former Rowdie loanee DeShorn Brown is on their team. He was pretty good when he played in his short stint for us. Will be interesting to see how he's doing now.
