Eric Kent and Dorothy Curwen started creating knitwear for the Hollywood Cricket Club in the early 1930s. It counted Douglas Fairbanks, Errol Flynn and Cary Grant as members, and they all wore Kent & Curwen sweaters, knitted at a factory in London. It meant that this collective of stylish silver-screen idols were championing British style, and an iconic piece of English sporting heritage was starting to have an influence on Hollywood. You can see how debonair and effortless Cary Grant looks here; people were used to seeing him dressed up in suits as a matinee idol, so it’s refreshing to see him in a more relaxed, sportier look.

Kent himself was known for wearing his sweater around Mayfair at a time when other men would be in a top hat and tails. He came up with the colour combinations for the trim by throwing flowers into the air in the studio, and seeing how they landed. Sport has always been integral to the brand, which was founded in 1926 by tiemaker Kent and seamstress Curwen. They started by making ties for Cambridge and Eton boat races, then for the Regatta.

What excited us about reinvigorating Kent & Curwen, which we started work on last summer, is how we could combine British tradition with contemporary fashion. The original cricket sweaters were made in raw Shetland wool, so we updated them in soft lambswool and tweaked the colours and braiding on the trim. It’s important to create modern clothes without sacrificing the history and heritage in which the house is so deeply rooted. There’s an authenticity to that.
