Move Over, Miami: The Best of St. Pete
It’s our first evening in St. Petersburg, Florida, and the prospect of homemade French-Vietnamese spring rolls has spurred us off the Gulf Coast’s white sands to family-owned Café Alesia. Lofty ceilings, polished concrete floors, wooden tables, Technicolor paintings, and a sympatico waiter who skips–yes, skips–across the room as we head to the back patio set the perfect stage for our vacationing party of three.
My husband, teenage daughter, and I fit right in among the handful of others at the outdoor tables under twinkling fairy lights and bougainvillea: date-night couples, friends, a multi-generational extended family. In fact, after devouring the delicate rolls followed by bowls of steaming pho and barbecued sirloin ribs, we’re the last to leave. We’re also on a first-name basis with our skipping waiter, Walter. “When you come here, you turn into a regular,” he says, as we settle up. “There’s something addicting about the food.”
It wasn’t just the food. After five days in and around St. Pete, I felt something mildly addicting about the whole place. Beyond the dreamy beaches I found a stiletto-free, thinking-person’s Florida where glassblowing is art, shuffleboard is cool, mid-century modern lives, local craft beer trumps $15 cocktails, and the sun shines an average of 361 days a year.

The Don CeSar was built in 1928 in a distinctive Mediterranean architectural-style. Staff at the Don CeSar are well-trained, attentive, and friendly. The pristine and white sugar-sand beach is the real star of the resort. There are two large pools, a spa, game-room, and both indoor and outdoor restaurants and bars. The Vinoy Renaissance Hotel overlooks both Tampa Bay and a scenic marina. The Vinoy, a historic boutique hotel, is located at 501 5th Avenue NE in St. Petersburg, Florida. The staff are well-trained, attentive, and friendly. The Vinoy was lovingly restored to the high standards of when it was originally built in the 1925. Close to the Salvador Dali Museum, Central Shopping District and a charming park, the Vinoy has a lot to offer. The golf course, however, is off-site. The Vinoy attracts both business conference travelers and tourists. Try Marchand's Bar and Grill, with a stunning interior, and a dreamy Gatsbyesque veranda bar for liquid refreshments. The hotel grounds and landscaping are top-notch. The Vinoy Renaissance Hotel is about 20 minutes from St. Petersburg Beach and about 40 minutes from the beaches of Anna Maria Island. The Renaissance Vinoy Resort & Golf Club is located in St. Petersburg, Florida.While staying there I had a standard room with a King sized bed in the Guest Tower. My room has two balconies and overlooked the harbour and downtown area. The hotel was opened in 1925 and has a lot of old charm mixed with modern touches. There are various locations on the property to eat with my favourite being the verandah bar off of the lobby along with the lounge chair waiter service poolside. They have a small spa which is rumoured to be getting a large expansion in the next few years. If you are visiting South West Florida you should definitely check out the Renaissance Vinoy Resort & Golf Club in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. www.marriott.com/tpasr

Developed by Thomas Rowe and opened in 1928, it gained renown as the Gulf playground for America's pampered rich at the height of the Jazz Age and it still serves as a popular retreat for the rich and famous of today. The Vinoy Park Hotel (also known as the Renaissance Vinoy Resort and Golf Club or The Vinoy) is a historic Mediterranean Revival-style hotel located in St. Petersburg, Florida on the bayfront area of downtown. The hotel is located at 501 Fifth Avenue Northeast overlooking the Vinoy Yacht Basin.[6]
On September 11, 1978, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. On April 18, 2012, the AIA's Florida Chapter placed it on its list of Florida Architecture: 100 Years. 100 Places.[7]
