Things to do in and around St. Pete: Food, drink, etc.

Things to do in and around St. Pete: Food, drink, etc.

Also including Tampa in this: various Cuban sandwich places; Bern's Steakhouse, etc.

Also added something about cigars below; Central Cigars & Ruby's Elixir in St. Pete and the cigar industry in Ybor City in Tampa.

Ted Peters Famous Smoked Fish is about a 15 minute drive west of Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg. I don't think it has changed much since opening in 1951; it looked exactly as I remembered it from the 1970s, when I visited in July 2016. Food was every bit as good as I remembered it, too: lovely smoked mullet, yummy hot German potato salad, etc.

https://supportyourlocalfootballclub.blogspot.com/2017/07/two-new-asian-eateries-makes-three-in.html

So I tried this new restaurant when walking down Central Avenue in downtown St. Pete before the Rowdies game last week against Charleston Battery: Pin Wok & Bowl. I had a very yummy poke bowl and pork dumplings. This place does not seem to have a website or Facebook page yet so I link this story below. This place must have just opened because the story below says they open this August and it is still July.

(Follow link for full article.)

https://stpetersburgfoodies.com/news/pin-wok-bowl-new-restaurant-on-central-ave-in-dtsp/

Two New Asian Eateries Makes Three in a Row on Central

According to the American Community Survey (ACS) from the Census Bureau, St. Petersburg only has an Asian population of 3.1%. Luckily for us DTSPers, the Asian restaurant population is about to triple on the 400 block of Central Avenue.

La V Vietnamese Fusion has been thriving there since 2012. They will be opening their new Sushi/ Pan-Asian Fusion next door to the right (east), called Asie (pronounced a-zee), currently slated for October opening at 437 Central Avenue. You can read more about it here.

In roughly, one month—sometime in August we will have Pin Wok & Bowl taking the space just left (west) of La V. This is at 445 Central Ave, which used to house The Mango Tree.

Their name is a play on Rock 'n' Roll. A Pin or Phin is like a guitar. It is a type of lute with a pear-shaped body, originating in the Isan region of Thailand and played mostly by ethnic Laotians in Thailand and Laos. It has frets on the neck over which two or three metal strings run that are plucked by a pick. These Guitars, which will be used to decorate the walls in the restaurant were handmade by the owner Roger Rattanachane.

Pork Dumplings:

"Spicy Lava Flow" Poke Bowl (cubed ahi tuna, cucumber, mango, seaweed salad, jalapeno, sweet onion, masago and roasted seaweed with spicy house sauce), served on a bed of sushi rice:

Edit to add, 2017-10-03:

They have a Facebook page now.

Also under "etc.", including a story about cigars, below, and some videos; cigars are Tampa's/Ybor City's claim to fame, not St. Pete's, although there is a place on Central Avenue in St. Pete, called Central Cigars, which looked/smelled quite nice when I walked past it a few weeks ago (in July 2017). I saw a guy enjoying a cigar and a glass of something (scotch? rum?) sitting at an outdoor sidewalk table. Almost tempts me to try cigar smoking. Almost.

This story below is also a reminder that Tampa has the claim to being the first large city, large Cuban community in Florida, not Miami. And yes Tampa invented the Cuban sandwich as we here in the USA know it (they don't call it a "Cuban" sandwich in Cuba). That's because of all the cigar factory workers in Tampa in the late 1800s. Also a nice shout out to local Tampa cuisine: the Cuban sandwich, deviled crab, crab chilau - but he forgot to mention scachatta!

For Ybor City in Florida, a historic cigar town faces a cloudy future

Tampa just wouldn’t be Tampa without the cigar industry,” Patrick Manteiga told me. “But this history is ignored because it doesn’t fit with a certain narrative. You have to understand that in the early 20th century, Tampa was just as exotic as Havana.”

We sat at the Manteiga family’s private table, on ornately carved wooden chairs, in a corner of La Tropicana Cafe, which for decades has been a gathering place on Seventh Avenue for Ybor City’s immigrant community. Over a lunch of Spanish bean soup, Cuban sandwiches and deviled crab (a dish created by striking cigar factory workers in the 1920s), we chatted a bit about Tampa foodways and its ultimate fusion dish, crab chilau — blue-crab meat in a spicy enchilada sauce, often served over spaghetti — which perfectly represents Ybor City’s cultural mix. But mostly we talked history.

The Latin community’s money, of course, came from cigars. Vicente Martinez Ybor was a Spaniard who’d made his fortune in Cuba but was forced to leave by Spanish colonial powers because he sympathized with Cuban independence. Ybor’s partner came to Tampa looking for a source of guavas, since guava jelly had become very popular in the United States during the 1880s . Instead, they saw the potential to transform Tampa into the world’s cigar capital. Ybor created modern Tampa out of a marshy backwater, and the population grew from about 700 in 1880 to more than 37,000 residents in 1910. The best cigar rollers left Cuba for Tampa by the thousands. Ybor brought an expanded port, paved roads, hundreds of new homes and businesses, streetcars, insurance companies and health clinics. “Miami was not even spit in the eye when Tampa was doing business with Havana,” Manteiga said.

“This is where the cigar gods reside,” Reyes said, seeming to ignore the creepiness. That’s because the Scientology testing area is literally where Señor Ybor’s desk used to be. On one wall, amid quotes from Hubbard, is a plaque announcing that, according to legend, the first Cuban sandwich was created in this building. People in Miami might, of course, take huge issue with this, but Reyes insists it’s true. He said he has documentation, a diary, that confirms Ybor’s company executives invented the Cuban sandwich because they believed the cigar rollers were eating too much at lunch and they wanted to curtail the afternoon siesta.

Back at the museum, Reyes showed me the working reproduction of a traditional cigar roller’s station. “This was station 149, my station,” he said. “I was assigned to this table in 1968. I was 14.”

The Making of Hand Rolled Cigars in Ybor City, Tampa

CheapHumidors.com

Published on Oct 10, 2014

http://www.cheaphumidors.com/a/handrolled

Hi I'm Kayla with cheaphumidors.com and today I'm here with Bivens from Wrapping It Up With Big Biv. We're here in Ybor City, Tampa, Florida, which is also known as "Cigar City." In the 1900's, there were over 200 different manufacturers here who rolled their own cigars. Now there is far less, but there are still some like La Faraona Cigar Lounge that roll their own cigars.

So we're going to go inside and get a quick demonstration on how to roll our own cigars.

I'm here with Odelma Matos, who is the owner of La Faraona Cigars, and she's going to show us how to roll our own cigars.

Right now, I'm rolling La Faraona cigars. The filler inside is from Nicaragua and Honduras. The wrapper is from Nicaragua. I've been doing this for 27 years in Cuba and here in the United States, I've been rolling cigars for only 4 years. The filler is a bunch. I put that in the press for about 30 minutes on one side, then 30 minutes on the other side and it's going to be in the press for an hour.

It needs to be in the press long enough because it has 3 dimensions. In the middle here, it's 60, here it's 42, and here is 36. This is the wrapper and the binder. The filler is ligero, seco and the volado right here. It's a different cigar. To make a cigar like this is very difficult because you have 3 different rings.

I put in the 3 different types of tobacco. The cigar I have made today is a medium body. The wrapper is from Nicaragua and the binder is from Nicaragua and Honduras. You have to go around the head 3 times, and close it right here. This cigar, you don't need to cut because it's already cut there. It's medium and it hits good, meaning it'll smoke good.

It needs 3 hours, or an hour and a half, it just depends on the press. It's very good and very easy to smoke. It only needs maybe 1 hour and 20 minutes to smoke. La Faraona cigar mold is from Cuba. La Faraona is very popular within the store. They always come in here to get La Faraona. It's very very popular for the people who come to the store.

Everyone leaves happy when they smoke this cigar. It's medium. It's very good for the morning, mid-day, for drinking, and smoking, very good. With a cigar like this, I'll have long ash.

*Special thanks to the owner of La Farona Cigars in Ybor City: Odelma Matos. Stop by her shop in person to see the magic happen with your own eyes: http://www.lafaraonacigars.com/
