Rowdies Home Attendance Thread – Game 4 vs. Louisville City FC [4/13]

So, I'm kind of surprised by this one (5,707). Not because it was Louisville and not because it was nice weather, but because Ticketmaster had this one showing as nearly sold out of reserved seats. That should be pretty close to 6k alone before the Mob, GA, and suites.

This makes me wonder if they gave out a lot of giveaways locally and to youth clubs and they just didn't show. I suppose it's good that they didn't count those in their total. Years ago I had heard from a reliable source that the Rowdies count paid tickets plus any comp tickets scanned. Feels like a fair way to calculate attendance in my mind. Several clubs would (and do) just count all of their comped (free giveaway) tickets. Making an assumption based on Ticketmaster, the crowd, and the final number that the Rowdies don't do that (which is good).

We're behind the pace a bit at this point. Numbers will need to pickup in the next few home matches...

Player Impact Thesis Project Week 6

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kcs5D_0BPsGORIv_Nf1HPXzxzqpphkIKNdybGRtynn4/edit#gid=0

This week's low performers: Richards (-6), Ekra (-3), Guenzatti (-1)

This week's high performers: Tinari (5), Fernandes (5), Hoppenot (5)

You would think McCarthy would have been one of the top positive impact guys considering the saves he made but passing turnovers and he was beaten in two different situations where accurate shots would've been goals. McCarthy still ranked positively with 4 goalkeeping points and kept the Rowdies in this game so that is important context.

Richards was sent back down to Earth after being able to slice and dice a pathetic Hartford side. Lou City was able to get a lot of turnovers off Richards who also struggled defensively.

Defensive positioning was a highlighted issue for me this week because the Rowdies are struggling to cover corner kicks and crosses. Either they're getting physically outmatched or they're allowing free runners. When the ball is on the ground, the Rowdies are one of the best defenses in the league. Ball in the air defense gets a little dicier depending on the defender. Morad and Richards are typically the most exposed in these situations.

Total player impact this week was 19. 18 in the first half with only 1 positive point in the second half. The Rowdies still play good team defense as most of the squad is involved and effective.

Man, there were some ugly passes in that second half. Thanks for your work on this project. I look forward to it!

J. King's Corner- TBR v LOU (Week 6) 1-1

McCarthy goes semi Howard- I can thank Tim Howard for being one of the principal players for getting me into soccer solely for his 2014 World Cup performance against Belgium. Now McCarthy didn't have 16 saves but he did have 7 and about 3 of them would've definitely been goals if he hadn't parried the shots away at the last conceivable second. The most impressive save was when Richards just absolutely blunders getting a touch on a long ball and gets beaten by Mkosana so it's one on one and McCarthy puts out a leg save. I lost my shit. Probably should've been a better finish by Mkosana but the presence of mind for McCarthy to charge it and get down in time is just insane.

Tale of Two Halves- The Rowdies didn't play well in the second half despite having some really good counter-attack chances but they lacked clinical passes and finishes. The Rowdies really needed that second goal because their defense was just getting torched on corners, crosses, and free kicks. During the run of play, the Rowdies defense usually remains sound and the high press creates a lot of havoc. The struggle for the Rowdies is that they never slowed the game down to possess when they had plenty of chances to make simple passes and make Lou City chase. Ultimately, the goal came from a lack of concentration. Nobody made a good tackle and the ball bounced off Diakite right into space for the trailing Thiam. The fact of the matter is, the Rowdies should've been able to close out this game despite the great shots Lou City got. They let Lou City get an easy one.

The second half was such a shock because the Rowdies roasted Lou City in the first half. Lou City got a little steam at the end of the half but that's chalked up to the Rowdies struggles with defending corners. The Rowdies had the opportunities to score 2 to 3 goals in this game and didn't convert.

Tinari and Fernandes shine while Ekra and Barry struggle- This was a high paced game that allowed the pacey midfielders room to create and operate. Tinari and Fernandes were the beneficiaries. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Ekra was probably gassed for most of the second half. A box to box defender being forced to chase counters and make runs to help his offense is going to wear you out. Ekra's a player that likes to pick and choose his spots, and this game forced him to charge both ways a lot. Barry is an albatross in the sense that he's a very technically sound player but goes unseen for large portions of the game. He's certainly been getting knocked around a bit which doesn't help.

Post MaGoal- Tinari's goal was special. That strike was comparable to what we would see from Schafer when he lined up a shot. A rocket shot to the high corner. We haven't seen Tinari shoot too much. We may need to ask for more shots on goal from him considering the lack we're getting from the forwards.

Baby Lou- Lou City reminded me of a team I've grown to not be very fond of despite the fact we poach so many of their best players. Lou City played a very Baby Bulls style of game using the pace and offensive talent of guys like Mkosana, Speedy Williams, and most importantly the creativity of Jiminez who was giving the Rowdies fits. Rasmussen was another quality player helping create on the offensive side. This Lou City team is going to be trouble once the usual suspects start to get healthy again. They still seem like a team building their identity as they've faced a lot of road games and a lot of tough losses. I still expect they will be heard from later this season.

Not converting shots- As I said before, the Rowdies offense was creating in this one. Lou City's defense was reeling in several instances. The issue is that the Rowdies amassed 13 shots but put only 2 on target. Neill Collins biggest question going forward is that when his team needs a goal against a top quality opponent, who can the offense rely on to put shots on net. Are those shots going to have to come from the midfield? There are 7 forwards on this roster, 6 healthy, and none of them have shown the ability to put shots on target and trouble opposing keepers. Guenzatti's two in play goals came against the scrub team. Hoppenot only has 3 shots. Allen has only 1 shot and Tejada has 0.

WILL DAVID BECKHAM'S MLS TEAM HAVE TO CHANGE NAME?

David Beckham’s MLS franchise may have to consider changing its name, should it fail to reach a settlement with Inter Milan over its trademark application.

Inter Miami CF are due to become Major League Soccer’s 25th franchise in 2020, but a legal dispute over the club’s name arose last month when it emerged that Inter Milan had filed a trademark application in 2014 over the usage of the word “inter.”

The Italian giants’ official name is FC Internazionale Milano—which translates into International Milan—but the 18-time Serie A winner are colloquially known as Inter in Italy and as Inter Milan in English-speaking countries.

Four years ago, the club filed a U.S. Patent and Trademark application to ensure the abbreviated version of its name was considered an exclusive brand, which would prevent MLS’s nascent franchise from marketing itself as Inter.

While the full name of Miami’s club is Club Internacional de Futbol Miami, last month the MLS filed an opposition to Inter Milan’s claim.

According to a legal document obtained by ProSoccer USA, the league argued that "No one soccer team can claim exclusive rights to the term Inter, therefore Milan has no exclusive rights to the term Inter."

However, should Inter Milan’s claim be successful, the implications for the MLS’s new entrant could be far-reaching.

“Unless there is an agreement between the parties regarding use, this could prove to be very problematic for MLS with regard to use of the team name Inter Miami,” Nora Fowler, chartered trademark attorney at intellectual property law firm EIP, told Newsweek.

“Inter Milan would attain the right to claim considerable damages in the US if the club can prove that another business has infringed its registered trademark rights. Therefore, Inter Miami would potentially have to consider changing its name.

The owner of a registered trademark enjoys several important benefits linked to that registration and one of the most important ones is the owner’s exclusive right to use the registered trademark.

In its notice of opposition, the MLS argued that the word “Inter” should not be associated with a particular team as it is used by a number of clubs such as NK Inter Zaprešić and FC Inter Turku, who play in the Croatian and Finnish top flight respectively.

German’s fifth division side Inter Leipzig and U.S. amateur club Inter Nashville F.C. also include the word Inter in their names.

However, because registered trademark rights are jurisdictional, clubs outside the U.S. would not be impacted by the ruling.

“A U.S. trademark registration for Inter owned by Inter Milan would give the Italian club exclusive rights over the trademark in the U.S. in relation to the goods and services it is registered for,” Fowler said.

“It would not prevent other clubs such as FC Inter Turku from using the mark in other parts of the world, for example Finland or Europe.”

When Beckham unveiled the name of the club last September, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid great said it had been chosen to celebrate “one of the most exciting cities in the world—one that is diverse, passionate and ambitious.”

“This is such a proud day for myself and for the entire team. It’s an honour to announce the new name and crest to our fans." - David Beckham, Miami MLS Owner and President of Football Operations#InterMiamiCF #ThisIsMiami #MLS

7:07 AM - Sep 5, 2018

Speaking to the Miami Herald earlier this month, Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas echoed Beckham's sentiments.

“The issues raised are a testament to our city and our team that we are already recognized as a global brand before kicking off,” he said.

Despite the ongoing legal dispute, Fowler suggested the MLS and Inter Milan were likely to reach a settlement, possibly even before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office delivers its response by May 4.

While each settlement is different and will depend heavily on parties’ priorities and business strategy, a coexistence agreement setting out strict terms defining how each party may use the mark and geographical restrictions regarding use or registration are a possibility.

However, there could be another, more drastic outcome.

“One team could agree to change its name potentially in return for financial settlement,” Fowler added.

The prospect of a protracted legal battle between the MLS and Inter Milan appears less likely.

Fighting the case through to a decision at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board is expensive and time consuming and it could cause considerable damage to both brands.

“Proceedings before the TTAB can be lengthy, and can often run for well over a year,” Fowler explained.

“Uncertainty as to outcome can hold up critical marketing plans so that it is often not in the interest of parties for matters to drag out for too long.”

When contacted by Newsweek, Inter Miami CF stated it would provide a formal update on the issue in due course.

David Beckham addresses the media during an event to announce his Major League Soccer franchise in Miami, Florida on January 29, 2018. Inter Miami CF will join the league in 2020.

New Senate bill seeks to gain property taxes from MLS stadium

Right now, the group who owns the soccer team doesn't have to pay any property taxes, but some state lawmakers are looking to change that.

AUSTIN, Texas — A new bill could bring construction on a new major league soccer stadium in North Austin to a halt.

The $200 million stadium is set to be built at McKalla Place and because of a deal with the city, Precourt Sports Ventures – the group that owns the soccer team – doesn't have to pay any property taxes. It's part of what brought them here, but that could change.

$252M soccer stadium coming to Sacramento, California

Dive Brief:

The Sacramento City Council voted unanimously Thursday to approve the terms for a $252 million soccer stadium, a move that will help the Sacramento Republic FC and the city meet the requirements for a Major League Soccer expansion award.

Investors and the team would privately finance construction of the stadium, as well as operate and maintain it, and provide new area infrastructure for the stadium property and an adjacent parcel that will be used for ancillary development. The city would reimburse the team for certain infrastructure costs through an Enhanced Infrastructure Financing District; absorb almost $2 million of internal administrative, permitting and inspection costs; and reimburse the team for construction excise and use taxes.

Stadium construction is expected to create between 1,310 and 1,640 jobs, while infrastructure work would generate up to 245. The team would also develop construction internship programs; hire small and disadvantaged workers and subcontractors; provide a community soccer field or futsal court; and allow public access to the park and trail areas around the stadium.

Dali clears first hurdle for expansion funding

As an homage to the unique style of Salvador Dalí, the museum features a freeform glass structure wrapping around the museum, standing 75 feet tall, and made up of 1,062 panes of glass. Jonah Hinebaugh | The Crow’s Nest

At a Pinellas County Commission meeting April 9, The Salvador Dalí Museum’s request for $17.5 million passed through the first step but still faces four more obstacles.

The funding will assist in its estimated $38.7 million budget for an expansion plan that will include a new 20,000-square-foot wing split between an exhibition space – dubbed the “Digital Dalí” – focused on immersive digital programming and a venue to host educational programs and events. It will also include a new parking garage.

The proposed plan will allocate money from Tourist Development Tax, or “Bed Tax” – a self-imposed 6-percent tax collected on accommodations in Pinellas County rented for less than six months.

The museum plans on fundraising the remaining $20.5 million.

If approved, the project is estimated to start in March 2020 and will take two years to complete.

The museum draws between 360,000 and 450,000 visitors annually, but is estimated to draw an additional 900,000 attendees in the decade following completion.

“With The Dalí attracting such consistently high demand, its existing programmatic spaces are beyond capacity, and it cannot accommodate more visitors,” wrote Hank Hine, executive director of the museum, in the application to the commission.

To accommodate the expected increase, they will build a 150,000-square-foot parking garage with 400 spaces, compared to the 130 spaces in the present garage. In a gesture of good faith, it will be open 24/7 to provide more parking for people headed to restaurants and bars downtown – it will also include boards, digital monitors and signage promoting other attractions in Pinellas County.

Hines says the growing demand for “immersive, innovative and mediated experiences,” and a lack of space for these new programs jump-started the efforts to expand.

The Dalí began experimenting with digital and interactive experiences as early as 2014 when the museum introduced an app that would turn a selfie into Dalí’s “Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea which at Twenty Meters Becomes the Portrait of Abraham Lincoln.”

The museum plans on continuing the experience this year, with two back-to-back exhibits – titled “Dalí Lives” and “Visual Magic: Dalí’s masterworks in augmented reality” – beginning May 11, what would be the artist’s 115th birthday.

“Dalí Lives” will bring the Surrealist back to life using artificial intelligence projected onto screens and providing commentary for visitors touring the collection. “Visual Magic” will utilize a mobile app to make the artist’s work “come to life.”

The educational and community space will focus on The Dalí’s Innovation Labs that inspire new ways of thinking by applying the artist’s imaginative artistic problem-solving to business and institutional design, according to Hines.

The 302-square-foot educational program space has a capacity of 10 people, but the new space will help increase the number of participants without the fear of overcrowding.

The museum was conceived by philanthropists Albert and Eleanor Morse after spending 40 years as patrons of, and friends with, Dalí. The Morses displayed their collection in their Ohio home, and then in a self-owned museum across from their offices for most of the 1970s.

At the end of the decade, they had a national search for a permanent home.

After St. Petersburg community leaders and Florida’s Secretary of State secured a $2 million appropriation for the museum’s construction and startup costs – the state’s largest appropriation for the arts at the time – the Dalí museum set up shop in a rehabilitated marine warehouse in 1982.

That building has since been transformed into USF St. Petersburg’s Harbor Hall.

The Category 5 Hurricane Andrew sent The Dalí museum on an almost decade-long hunt for a safer location to house the collection that is valued between $500 and $700 million.

Cue the waning Bayfront Center, a once-thriving indoor arena that hosted sports, concerts and other events, such as WWE wrestling. From the Beach Boys to the Tampa Bay Rowdies, the complex thrived until bigger venues in the Tampa Bay area moved in, notably Tropicana Field.

It got to the point where it was draining funds from the city, and in 2003, The Dalí set its sights on the building, leading to the implosion of the complex in 2004.

The Dalí emerged from the rubble in 2011, thanks to designer Yann Weymouth, with 18-inch “hurricane proof” concrete walls and an iconic glass free-form dome.

To continue on its path for growth, the addition will have to be reviewed by the county and an unnamed consultant, followed by a review of the consultant’s report from the Tourist Development Council.

If all goes well, the Board of County Commissioners will authorize staff to engage in negotiations. Once funding agreements have been reached, The Dalí will have the green light to expand.

“Since first opening its doors in 1982, The Dalí Museum has been the unofficial heart and leader of fine arts in the growing arts-centric city of St. Petersburg,” Hines wrote.

“We are confident that our expansion project will drive considerable incremental tourism to our museum and to the county.”

LA Stadium reaches milestone with completion of canopy shell

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — The stadium that will house Los Angeles' NFL teams has reached another milestone with its opening less than 16 months away.

Officials with LA Stadium at Hollywood Park and representatives from the Rams and Chargers held a ceremony Monday to celebrate the completion last week of the outer shell for the canopy that sits above the stadium's seating bowl, Champions Plaza and performance venue.

The steel roof shell is one of three parts of the canopy. The other two parts are the cables to keep the roof and suspended Oculus scoreboard in place and a single layer of ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluorethylene), which is a lightweight and transparent plastic. It was also used to construct the roof of US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, which hosted the 2018 Super Bowl and this year's Final Four.

"Each time we come here it gets more and more real," Rams chief operating officer Kevin Demoff said. "When the NFL envisioned coming back to Los Angeles, this is what they had in mind — a two-team iconic stadium that anchors a sports and entertainment district."

LA Sports and Entertainment District managing director Jason Gannon said the stadium is two-thirds complete. When it opens, the stadium will measure more than 3 million square feet and will be the largest in the NFL.

"I've seen a lot of NFL stadiums, but this is the largest. It's grand but it's befitting of Los Angeles," said A.G. Spanos, the Chargers' president of business operations. "You need a stadium to match the city."

The seating capacity will be 70,240 but can be expanded to 100,000 for major events. It is already slated to host the Super Bowl in 2022, the College Football Playoff title game in 2023 and the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2028 Summer Olympics.

The Chargers have one more year at Dignity Health Sports Park and the Rams are going into their final season at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Both teams have started to bring their staff to the construction site on a regular basis to begin planning game presentation and other details.

Students can get rowdy discount

Eckerd students now have the opportunity to buy discounted tickets to Tampa Bay Rowdies games thanks to support from the Campus Activities office. Tickets are currently on sale for $5 for April 13.

Tyler Petrotta, coordinator of recreational programs and services, came up with the idea when in talks with Joe Grossman, the ticket sales account executive for the Rowdies. Looking for a way to engage the student body to support local sports and have a good time, Petrotta came up with the idea to buy tickets and sell them for half price to Eckerd students.

“I believe becoming part of the mob for the Rowdies is a great way for people to get off campus and explore downtown St. Pete,” Petrotta said.

This comes after Eckerd alumnus Juan Tejada was drafted to the Rowdies earlier this year. For any who miss the $5 discount, there are also $10 discounted tickets that students can buy using the code ECKERD10 on the Rowdies website.

“Some students have a similar background as myself, who grew up going to local sporting events with the season ticket holders getting ‘rowdy,’ no pun intended, at the games. Other students have never experienced a professional sporting event,” Petrotta said. “This is a great opportunity for both groups of people to come out while on a college budget.”
