CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte City Council got a briefing Monday during closed session on potential renovations to make Bank of America Stadium compatible for Major League Soccer, sources told Channel 9's government reporter Joe Bruno.

An official cost has not been set, but the initial estimate is around $100 million to $200 million worth of improvements, including infrastructure and tourism tax allocations. The tourism tax can only exclusively be used for tourism purposes such as professional sports. This pot of money cannot be used for things like affordable housing or roads.

Possible outcomes from the NASL’s antitrust lawsuit against US Soccer

The U.S. Soccer Federation is now fighting a two-front legal war over its future. Earlier this month, one of the nation’s leading soccer promoters, Relevent Sports, refiled an antitrust lawsuit against USSF for blocking foreign leagues from scheduling U.S. matches. This suit comes two years after the North American Soccer League sued USSF, its marketing arm Soccer United Marketing, and later MLS for conspiring to keep NASL out of both of USSF’s two top tiers.

The same law firm, Winston and Strawn, led by the same star sports attorney, Jeff Kessler, represents the plaintiffs in both suits, which seek similar organizational (or injunctive) changes in the way professional soccer in the U.S. is run as well as damages from the defendants.

USSF has not yet had time to answer the Relevent Sports complaint. But much has happened since the NASL filed its action, little of it good for the NASL. But there is still the possibility that the NASL could prevail on some of its...

Deborah Cox will headline Metro Inclusive Health’s annual cocktail party

Twitter
Say cheers, Tampa, because international recording artist Deborah Cox is performing in the Sunshine City. The prolific performer will headline METRO Inclusive Health’s annual cocktail party, which takes place on November 9, benefiting the non-profit organization’s LGBTQ+ programming.

The Grammy-nominated singer held the record for the longest-running #1 R&B single, Nobody’s Supposed to be Here, a well-known anthem for the LGBTQ community.

Raising funds for essential LGBTQ+ programs
Why is the cocktail party imperative to METRO Inclusive Health? The event provides funding for the essential health and wellbeing services provided to the LGBTQ+ and ally communities. Included within the organization’s mission are dozens of unfunded community programs offered to the LGBTQ+ community, including youth and seniors, at little to no cost.

“As one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States, demand for community programs has continued to grow,” said CEO Lorraine Langlois. “We serve a vital need in fulfilling that sense of community among our seniors as well helping the youngest of our LGBTQ+ community deal with the challenges of coming out, often within conservative households.”

To be held in Grand Hall of new Ybor City headquarters
What makes this year’s event so special is that it will take place inside the Grand Hall at METRO Inclusive Health’s newly renovated 47,000-square-foot at the historic German American Club in Ybor City.

Want to meet Deborah Cox? A select number of “Producer Level” tickets are available that include a meet and greet with the star and preferred seating during her performance.

Helping serving individuals with HIV in Pinellas and Hillsborough
A new generation of HIV diagnosis are hitting the Tampa Bay area, with Hillsborough and Pinellas identified by the CDC as two of the “most burdened counties” in the country. Having served over 27,000 individuals in 2018, METRO is on course to increase that number significantly in 2019.

Tickets start at $60 per person and include open bar, heavy hors d’oeuvres and a brief ceremony followed by an up close and personal 30-minute performance by Deborah Cox.

When: Saturday, November 9, 7pm-midnight
Where: German American Club, 2105 North Nebraska Avenue, Ybor City
Cost: Tickets start at $60 per person

Facebook-ESPN Partnership Intensifies Sports Streaming Battle

Facebook FB and ESPN recently inked a partnership, per which the latter will provide sports-related digital shows and content to Facebook Watch.

The deal is a win-win for both the social-media giant and Disney DIS division ESPN. While the partnership will help ESPN reach a wider audience, exclusive shows from one of the top producers of sports-related content are likely to improve user engagement for Facebook Watch.

Amazon, Disney & Others Join the Fray

Amazon now owns a stake in YES Network, the country’s most-watched regional sports network. It features live games and programming focusing on the New York teams — the Brooklyn Nets, the WNBA’s New York Liberty and most importantly, the New York Yankees.

Apart from deals with NFL to stream Thursday Night Football, the e-commerce giant also launched MLB.TV on Prime Video Channels for Prime members in the United States. Moreover, Amazon Prime Video live streams AVP league and the Laver Cup tennis tournament.

Additionally, in the U.K., the company has exclusive rights to the 2019 US Open tennis tournament as part of a five-year deal. Further, beginning this December, Amazon will offer 20 Premier League games.

Meanwhile, Disney’s sports-focused streaming service ESPN+ has gained solid traction, primarily owing to content strength. The service streams hundreds of MLB, NHL and MLS games, Grand Slam tennis, boxing, PGA Tour golf, college sports, international rugby, and cricket, among others.

Moreover, ESPN+ is the exclusive distributor of Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (UFC) pay-per-view (PPV) events in the United States through 2025.

Notably, Disney is set to launch a bundle pack of its three streaming services — Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ — for $12.99 a month beginning Nov 12.

Furthermore, Twitter has expanded its presence in the sports streaming space by partnering with ESPN, NFL, WarnerMedia, The Players’ Tribune and MLS.

Additionally, in July, YouTube announced a partnership with NBA Africa to offer live and video-on-demand streaming of basketball, rugby, cricket and football on its platform. The content slate includes 2019 NBA Finals, Women’s World Cup, Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), UEFA Champions and Europa leagues, ABSA Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1 and Serie A.

NHL Could Land Monster National TV Contract with NBC Deal Expiring

Other Leagues’ TV Deals Skyrocket

In the past five years, a number of deals have come up in various leagues in the United States. Sticking with NBC owned rights the network inked a deal in 2015 to remain the home of the English Premier Leauge. That deal went from NBC paying the EPL $83 million per season for the rights to $166 million per year with a six-year, $1 billion extension signed.

Major Leauge Baseball also recently extended its deal with FOX in 2018 on a seven-year extension valued at $5.1 billion. Under the previous deal, FOX paid the MLB $525 million per season, the new deal has an AAV of $728 million. Over in the NBA, a league in-which many NHL arenas share teams with, they re-upped their deals with both Turner and Disney back in 2016. Those deals turned out to be a nine-year, $24-billion contract for the NBA with an AAV of $2.66 billion per season, up from the $930 million annually on the previous contract.

As for Major League Soccer, MLS, their deal is up in 2022. No news for now on that but they have reportedly told teamsto not extend their local deals beyond 2022. That gives an indication that MLS may try and package their national and local rights in one big deal.
