Miami Beckham expansion bid 'at the finish line' - MLS commissioner Garber

CHICAGO -- MLS commissioner Don Garber said that the league may decide on Wednesday whether to hold a vote to grant David Beckham's group and the city of Miami an expansion franchise.

Speaking exclusively to ESPN FC at the unveiling of an all-weather "mini-pitch" on Chicago's south side, Garber said about Miami, "We're at the finish line. We're not over the finish line yet. We've been working hard for a really long time. We feel like we've got everything where we need it to be."

The MLS Board of Governors is set to meet on Wednesday. The expectation out of Beckham's camp is that a vote will take place. Garber sounded optimistic as well, but stopped short of stating that a vote is guaranteed to happen then.

"We're going to talk to our board about it," said Garber. "We're in a position to ask for a vote [on Miami], but at this point we're not sure whether we're actually going to take it at that point. We'll know a lot more on Wednesday."

[ . . . ]

It was also two months ago that Beckham's group, Miami Beckham United, purchased a three-acre plot from Miami-Dade County for $9 million. When combined with a previous six-acre purchase from a private owner, MBU has the land it needs to build its stadium. All that needs to be done is for the City of Miami to approve zoning changes for the stadium site.

But just 10 days ago, wealthy local landowner Bruce Matheson filed a lawsuit seeking to block the county's sale of the land. Garber said he's not concerned.

"I don't see the lawsuit as an impediment to the process," he said. "More importantly, as you 've heard from the mayor [of Miami, Tomas Regalado] there will be a process where the public can weigh in, and we support that because we want to be good community partners."

Garber said he was also encouraged by the current state of MLS expansion efforts even though both St. Louis and San Diego took hits in recent months. A St. Louis stadium funding measure was rejected by voters, while San Diego's attempt to hold a vote on a stadium project looks set to be delayed until next year. But Detroit's bid got a boost when Wayne County executive Wayne Evans indicated he prefers a plan by MLS bidders Dan Gilbert and Tom Gores to build a stadium and criminal justice complex. Last week Sacramento began construction on its stadium project, and Garber recently concluded a successful visit to Nashville.

"I read something the other day about whether or not we're disappointed by where we are. We couldn't be more excited about where we are," he said. "The news out of Detroit was very positive, clearly the groundbreaking in Sacramento was very, very positive, my trip to Nashville was off the charts. And there remain lots of different, great markets for us to go to. At some point, somebody is going to be really disappointed, and we're going to have to figure out how to manage that."

Beckham closes in on MLS franchise, but will Miami care?

MIAMI — The midday sun was beating down on a forlorn 9-acre section of the Overtown neighborhood last month, and there was not a soul in the streets. Boarded-up shops faced the lots on one side, and public housing on two others. High-rise apartments and office towers in downtown Miami, markers of the city's rapid resurgence, glistened not far off.

Sternberg: Rays ready to make 'quick' decision once they get stadium options

Principal owner Stuart Sternberg said the Rays are working pretty much every day on the effort to get a new stadium.

But as of now, the team is waiting for Hillsborough County officials "to completely weigh in" with a site and specifics of the project.

"When they do then we'll be able to make a decision in a pretty quick time," he said.

That makes it sound as if they already know what their Pinellas options are, but he said not quite.

"We have sites in mind, and it's a question of what will get done around the site and how are they going to get paid for," he said. "And once municipalities are able to line those things up, not completely buttoned up but at least to a good extent, then we'll be able to make a decision."

Sternberg said they were hoping to have a decision by the end of the season, but the end of the year may be more likely.

The MLS New England Revolution Battles Redcoats For Fans In New Ad Campaign

The New England Revolution is a Major League Soccer team in New England. Problem is, New Englanders are overwhelmed with storied sports franchises. We've got the Boston Bruins, the Boston Celtics, the Boston Red Sox and let's not forget the New England Patriots. How is a franchise from a tier five sport, soccer, going to break through? By channeling its brand idea, that's how.

Have a look at these very Boston spots and then I'll break it down:

https://www.dirtysouthsoccer.com/2017/7/28/16054164/a-haters-guide-to-orlando-city

A Hater’s Guide to Orlando City

We’re providing a community service here.

Welcome to a Hater’s Guide to Orlando City. Hopefully, I’ll be able to provide you with a hater’s guide for every opponent the rest of the year, but I figured there wouldn’t be a better place to start than the team from Florida.

Take the facts put forth in this guide with many grains of salt. I’ve put minimal effort into researching them.

[ . . . ]

City symbol: Apparently, it’s this fountain?

I guess it’s appropriate that the city symbol is something usually found as the centerpiece of retirement communities and malls to make them seem fancy.

Largest Industry: Tourism

Over 62 million people a year come to the outskirts of Orlando each year to leave almost as soon as they’ve arrived.

They leave hot, at each other’s throats and angry that they were somehow tricked into paying thousands of dollars to stand in line, eat bad food and watch tacky theme park shows.

That Orlando has been able to keep up the ruse that their theme parks aren’t awful money vacuums for this long is commendable and the only thing I will applaud them for in this piece.

Weather: It seems nice.

And the city is far enough inland that it doesn’t get wrecked by hurricanes all the time. However, despite being the largest inland city in the state, it’s just the fourth largest overall. The other three are on the coast.

The conclusion? Millions of people would rather be hit by a literal hurricane than live in Orlando.

[ . . . ]

Uniform: Grimace from McDonaldland: The kit

Mascot: A nightmare lion that loves the movie Step Up 2: The Streets, and Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes of TLC.

[ . . . ]

The Fans

Supporter’s Groups: Ruckus and Iron Lion Firm

Both groups have been suspended/given a stern talking to by the club for cursing at Disney World and for setting off fireworks in the middle of a Tampa Bay Rowdies crowd.

Their People: Super hardcore and edgy AF.

For example:

They’ve got a mean right hook*

*when no one is expecting it and they’re distracting the person by throwing bottles at nearby people

They like to dox Atlanta United team staff and find out which hotel the team is staying in and pull the fire alarm at said hotel at 3:45 in the morning. Real adult humans did this.

No, seriously.

And they also like to deface billboards that were just trying to bring something nice to look at to the city for once.

Essentially, we’re dealing with a group of rogue commando’s here and if you see one in their natural habitat (wearing jean shorts, drinking Natural Light, listening to Tyga) this weekend, please do not approach one. You could be in danger.

Conclusion

The city is a tacky hellscape, the team is mediocre and the state they live in is somehow the worst in the southeast. Can we really blame their fans for lashing out and making the choices they do when they have to live in Florida?

Yes.

Rowdies Home Attendance Thread - Game 10 vs. Charleston Battery [7/22] (self.TampaBayRowdies)

Another good crowd on Throwback Night (5,619) that felt larger. Rays were in town again this week. Can't help feeling that it would have crossed the 6,000 mark if it hadn't rained off and on all day. Two more at home in a row the next two weeks...

What if they weren’t the Sounders?

I myself, I am proud to say, "stuffed the ballot" multiple times with the Seattle Sounders name as the write-in option, and I encouraged others to do likewise. I've only visited Seattle once and I don't support the Sounders, but as a Rowdies supporter since 1975, it was my sacred duty to help keep another old North American soccer brand name alive.

Wisely, the owners listened to the fans and picked the Sounders name, but we should never have been forced to write the name in, in the first place. It should have been the automatic name choice without a ballot, and the fact that it wasn't even on the ballot was the final insult. Decades of soccer history and legacy potentially washed down the drain as though it were worth nothing!

I should not have to explain why something like this is important to USA soccer in general and to Rowdies fans in particular.

(Follow link for full article.)

https://www.sounderatheart.com/2017/7/29/16061410/what-if-they-werent-sounders

What if they weren’t the Sounders?

Alternate timelines show how the business could have gone way wrong.

Eight years into their MLS existence, the Seattle Sounders have embraced their heritage like few other teams have before. The Sounders unapologetically trace their history back to 1974, the year the NASL team was founded, even wearing uniforms meant as an homage to that original team. As obvious as this may all seem now, though, it's worth remembering how close the Sounders came to using an entirely different name.

There are two significant paths that could have lead to there not being a Seattle Sounders in Major League Soccer. The first is simply if the club refused to allow a write-in vote when the team was in its expansion phase. Seattle Republic, Seattle Alliance and Seattle FC all could have been selected. More frightening is a Seattle MLS expansion that did not include Adrian Hanauer at all.

Both major paths are soulless options, bereft of history. They lack any connection our collective memories of the game’s first professional dip into our community, nor our second. One, is only more worse than the other. Both are alternate realities where soccer is a minor league sport in a major league town.

This story below is somewhat related to the above story; I don't have a problem with choosing names that "sound European" or whatever if it's a brand new American soccer team with no existing history or identity; or if it's a new-ish American soccer team with a truly awful name (ie, Dallas Burn); but trashing old, existing, legacy-intensive American soccer identities for the latest flavor of the month Euro-poseur names is an entirely different matter, IMO (ie, I was okay with changing the Dallas Burn name, but not the Kansas City Wizards name, for instance):

Sunken Gardens (Florida)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sunken Gardens are 4 acres (1.6 hectares) of well-established botanical gardens, located in the Historic Old Northeast neighborhood of St. Petersburg, Florida, at 1825 4th Street North. The Gardens have existed for more than a century, and are one of the oldest roadside tourist attractions in the United States. The Gardens are now operated by the City of St. Petersburg, FL and maintained with the help of volunteers. Sunken Gardens are open to the public every day of the week. An admission fee is charged for entrance into the gardens and a yearly membership is also available.

Sunken Gardens retains their historical interest as an important example of a 1930s Florida roadside commercial attraction, and is probably the oldest commercial tourist attraction on Florida's west coast. The Gardens are open to the public for educational programs, tours, and special events, particularly weddings which have taken place for decades on the Wedding Lawn,[1] and in the banquet facilities in the Garden Room overlooking the unique garden setting.

Tropical Botanical Gardens in Florida Called Sunken Gardens, St Petersburg, FL

Published on Dec 7, 2013

The Sunken Gardens in St Petersburg, Florida is a beautiful tropical place to visit while in the area of Tampa, Clearwater, Sarasota, and St Petersburg. It feels like a large tropical rain forest and has flamingos, parrots, turtles, waterfalls, coy ponds, and lots of palm trees and tropical flowers. This place would be amazing for a small wedding; in fact we saw chairs set up for a wedding on a small pavilion in the middle of the whole place. The place is so big that I think we did a quarter mile lap on their walkways. The coolest part was how cheap it was to get in, something like only ten bucks.

I created this video with the YouTube Video Editor (http://www.youtube.com/editor)

Orlando vs Tampa Bay – The ultimate rivalry

July 16, 2017 · by Kartik Krishnaiyer · in Orlando City SC, Orlando Pride, Tampa Bay Rowdies    ·

The rivalry between Orlando City SC and the Tampa Bay Rowdies is the ultimate Florida contest with statewide supremacy and so much more on the line. Here is my 1,500 word soliloquy for Prost Amerika, a Seattle-based national soccer site that is known especially for its wall-to-wall coverage of the intense rivalries in the Cascadia area.

Extinction level event? Deltas' peril pushing NASL to the brink ... again

As the league needed an eighth team to remain eligible for Division II sanctioning in 2017, the Deltas were a necessary addition. This past winter saw Rayo OKC and the Fort Lauderdale Strikers go dormant, Minnesota United FC leave for MLS, and the Tampa Bay Rowdies and Ottawa Fury switch to the USL. The NASL nearly folded entirely before an 11th-hour owners meeting kept the core intact.

For the sake of argument, let’s say the Deltas hang on for another year and the NASL lumbers on as a 12-team, independent league. Unless San Francisco turns up in droves (a la FC Cincinnati), there will be lingering questions about the sustainability of the Bay Area club. Meanwhile, the New York Cosmos organization is back in murky water after being on life support this winter. Longtime gaffer Giovanni Savarese made public his longtime desires to leave and coach in MLS, and he seems a strong candidate for any winter opening. He has long steered the ship for the club now located in Brooklyn. Without his guidance, its prospects are put back into question.

Former England boss Sam Allardyce would consider another international job

Sam Allardyce would consider a return to football management if the right international job came up, but intends to enjoy his break from the game first.

Allardyce had a spell playing in the United States with the Tampa Bay Rowdies in 1983 and a move to coach in Major Soccer League has been suggested.

"There has been one or two offers, but not internationally and of course it is far too early for me to consider a position at the moment. Time has to elapse and see how I feel," he added.

"I am going to spend some time travelling the world - me and Lynn have booked a fabulous holiday in Hawaii, so I am going to go there and chill out a bit."

Two New Asian Eateries Makes Three in a Row on Central

So I tried this new restaurant when walking down Central Avenue in downtown St. Pete before the Rowdies game last week against Charleston Battery: Pin Wok & Bowl. I had a very yummy poke bowl and pork dumplings. This place does not seem to have a website or Facebook page yet so I link this story below. This place must have just opened because the story below says they open this August and it is still July.

Two New Asian Eateries Makes Three in a Row on Central

According to the American Community Survey (ACS) from the Census Bureau, St. Petersburg only has an Asian population of 3.1%. Luckily for us DTSPers, the Asian restaurant population is about to triple on the 400 block of Central Avenue.

La V Vietnamese Fusion has been thriving there since 2012. They will be opening their new Sushi/ Pan-Asian Fusion next door to the right (east), called Asie (pronounced a-zee), currently slated for October opening at 437 Central Avenue. You can read more about it here.

In roughly, one month—sometime in August we will have Pin Wok & Bowl taking the space just left (west) of La V. This is at 445 Central Ave, which used to house The Mango Tree.

Their name is a play on Rock 'n' Roll. A Pin or Phin is like a guitar. It is a type of lute with a pear-shaped body, originating in the Isan region of Thailand and played mostly by ethnic Laotians in Thailand and Laos. It has frets on the neck over which two or three metal strings run that are plucked by a pick. These Guitars, which will be used to decorate the walls in the restaurant were handmade by the owner Roger Rattanachane.

Pork Dumplings:

"Spicy Lava Flow" Poke Bowl (cubed ahi tuna, cucumber, mango, seaweed salad, jalapeno, sweet onion, masago and roasted seaweed with spicy house sauce), served on a bed of sushi rice:

David Beckham Closes In on M.L.S. Franchise. Will Miami Care?

By KEN BELSON

JULY 30, 2017

MIAMI — The midday sun was beating down on a forlorn, nine-acre section of the Overtown neighborhood last month, and there wasn’t a soul in the streets. Boarded-up shops faced the lots on one side, and public housing on two others. High-rise apartments and office towers in downtown Miami, markers of the city’s rapid resurgence, glistened not far off.

The nearly empty land will get a makeover of its own in the coming months if Major League Soccer awards an expansion team to an investment group led by David Beckham, perhaps the world’s most glamorous former soccer player. The issue will be on the agenda again when the league’s owners meet on Wednesday in Chicago, where M.L.S. will host its annual All-Star Game, but a vote on approval could be closer than ever.

Beckham’s bid for a franchise, once thought to be foundering, now faces little opposition. If it is approved this year, Miami Beckham United — the team’s working title — will become the league’s 24th club as M.L.S. rushes to expand to 28 teams by 2020, and shovels and excavators will soon begin digging on the site in Overtown, a former county truck depot.

[ . . . ]

Support at the gate is one concern, but there are also questions about the 25,000-seat stadium that Beckham’s group has planned for a run-down corner of a historically black neighborhood. Beckham, who was not made available for an interview, settled on the tight spot after failing to acquire land at two locations near Biscayne Bay and on a third plot next to the Miami Marlins’ stadium in Little Havana, less than two miles away.

To crowbar a stadium into the land in Overtown, a few blocks from I-95 and the Miami River, the Beckham group would not build any parking. Instead, fans would have to walk from lots as much as 15 minutes away, or from one of the three nearby commuter rail stations.

That may be an urban planner’s dream, and it fits Garber’s vision of soccer teams in downtown locations, but it appears to be a naïve assumption to residents of Miami, where the heat can be oppressive, rain storms can strike at any time and driving is a way of life.

“I want Beckham to be in the league, and he’s the guy who can make Miami work,” said one M.L.S. owner who asked not to be named because the vote on the team had not taken place. “But when we sit in the room, that’s what we talk about.”

Residents of the adjacent Spring Garden neighborhood also worry about traffic and noise spilling into their quiet residential enclave, and fear that concerts and other events will fill the stadium on nights when the team isn’t playing.

[ . . . ]

Geography is critical for Luis Garcia, whose family has owned a fish restaurant on the Miami River just a few minutes by foot from the stadium site. In recent years, upscale restaurants have opened nearby, part of the spillover from downtown. Garcia, whose father first bought property in the area decades ago, said young soccer fans would help revitalize an area with a less than desirable reputation.

“David Beckham has validated my father’s vision,” Garcia said over a lunch of fish sandwiches. The stadium “will be an economic engine.”

Before that engine can start, Beckham will have to get zoning and other approvals, likely to come next year. Then, assuming that M.L.S. owners give Beckham the green light, he will have to assemble a roster, sign a few foreign stars and start the hard work of selling tickets to skeptical fans.

“The history of soccer and pro sports teams in Miami has been spotty at best,” said David Downs, a former commissioner of the N.A.S.L., who has lived in the city. “Getting over the political hurdles is a start. But that’s only the beginning of the challenges.”

An updated, tiered look at the MLS Expansion race

As we enter the midway point of the MLS season, and the middle of the calendar year, we’re supposedly less than six months away from a decision on MLS teams 25 and 26.

A few candidates have furthered their bids dramatically in recent months, such as the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Others have fallen off hard, with St. Louis and San Diego suffering big hits. Commissioner Don Garber has even visited a few of the candidate cities, bolstering the faith of supporters in Nashville and Cincinnati, while those in either of the North Carolina bids have been left wanting.

With so little time before MLS’ self-imposed decision deadline, the end of 2017, it’s worth taking a look at where each candidate stands in relation to the others. Here’s a look at the candidates bracketed into tiers of probability:

TIER 1- FRONTRUNNERS

TAMPA/ST. PETERSBURG

The bid fronted by the Tampa Bay Rowdies and owner Bill Edwards was always one to take seriously. Edwards has the political capital within the American soccer scene to make a major push, and he’s utilized those resources to make a big push for one of the two expansion slots up for grabs in 2017. The Rowdies made their intentions clear when they made the leap from the NASL to the MLS-partnered USL at the beginning of the year. That move has paid off on the field, with the team sitting in playoff position through 18 matches, and was likely a helpful factor off the field through increased relations with MLS.

With a successful team, a dedicated and proven ownership group, and a major U.S. market, the Rowdies were just a stadium plan away when their bid was announced. That bid received a major boost into the top tier when, on May 2, St. Petersburg voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum that allowed the city to enter negotiations with Edwards for a 25-year lease on Al Lang Stadium. Edwards plan is to spend roughly $80 million to renovate and expand the Rowdies current home to a capacity of 18,000. Just like that, the Rowdies finished the final pillar of their bid and now simply await a decision from the league, one that Edwards hopes is made in his favor.

SACRAMENTO

Much like the Rowdies bid, the Sacramento group comes backed by an existing USL team, the Republic, and their ownership group led by Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman. With a highly successful USL team, currently in playoff position, a strong ownership group, and a previously approved 20,000 seat stadium plan, the Republic were ready for MLS expansion before the process was even announced. The lone piece holding the bid back was a crucial one, however, as the group behind the MLS bid was apparently entirely unaffiliated with the Republic. The divisive nature of the two groups caused a great deal of anxiety in Sacramento, as it could have derailed an otherwise perfect bid.

That issue was resolved in early May as Sac Soccer & Entertainment Holdings, the group behind the MLS bid, announced the acquisition of the Republic and their official incorporation into the bid. The purchase brought major power to the ownership group, unifying Sac Soccer CEO Kevin Nagle, HP CEO Whitman, and San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York under a single banner. That’s a lot of firepower and all the more reason to keep Sacramento near the forefront of the expansion discussion.

Pulis: Match Against Tampa Bay About “More Than Points”

On Thursday night, Orlando City B will host the Tampa Bay Rowdies for their second matchup of the 2017 USL season. Everyone knows that there is bad blood between the two local rivals: the Lions will be playing for pride and for points when they take the pitch Thursday night.

“It’s a huge game. Obviously there is more at stake than points, it’s local pride,” Head Coach Anthony Pulis said in training this week. “We know how much this means to the supporters, the hardcore supporters who have been here since Day One.”

The rivalry between Tampa and Orlando has always been important, going back to the days before Orlando City joined MLS. Now, Tampa Bay is in a bid of their own for MLS expansion and that tension only makes both teams want to prove themselves more.

“I think there will definitely be a little bit of added spice to it. Obviously they’re trying to get their MLS expansion franchise and we’re already there,” Pulis said. “So, for sure, I’m imagining they’re going to bring down a few supporters themselves. Hopefully we can get a good crowd and I’m sure it will be a good game.”
