Robert Blackmon, John Hornbeck debate key policy differences

"Hornbeck wants the city to split the cost with the team to build a new stadium at the waterfront Al Lang Field site. His proposal calls for a 20,000-seat stadium with a retractable roof that both the Tampa Bay Rowdies and the Rays would share. "

I don't know why people keep harping on the Rays using the Al Lang site. It's too small; they would need to expand the site into the harbor and move Bayshore Drive out further into the harbor; it seems unlikely to be approved by voters, especially if they expect the city to pay for it.

Designing a proper dual-use baseball/soccer stadium on that small of a footprint is also another problem; I would be for it, if it really was designed with soccer in mind, but it seems pretty unlikely.

Two stadiums at two different locations sounds to me, ultimately, both easier, cheaper, and more likely to happen, than a multi-use stadium at Al Lang.

Robert Blackmon, John Hornbeck debate key policy differences

The Tampa Bay Rays debacle is one of them.

St. Petersburg City Council candidates Robert Blackmon and John Hornbeck squared off in a debate Wednesday at a Suncoast Tiger Bay luncheon.

Despite the two candidates sharing a lot of similar ideas on things like affordable housing and the environment, the single-district debate allowed voters to spot differences in policy ideas.

One of the most significant disparities between the two is their position on keeping the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Pete. Both want that to happen, but Hornbeck has stronger views on how to make it occur — which may result in some pushback from voters.

Hornbeck wants the city to split the cost with the team to build a new stadium at the waterfront Al Lang Field site. His proposal calls for a 20,000-seat stadium with a retractable roof that both the Tampa Bay Rowdies and the Rays would share.

What makes the pitch controversial is it assumes public financing for a new stadium. Some voters express willingness to go that route, but (like almost anything), others have no desire to see taxpayer dollars fund several hundred million dollars for a sports team facility.
The plan also expects the Rays would want to play baseball at Al Lang.

Owner Stu Sternberg has said he’s willing to entertain the idea; because the Rays now own the Tampa Bay Rowdies, they control the site. However, the context of that controversy is limited to playing a partial season or Spring Training at that site.

Further, St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman said if the team decides to split its season between St. Pete and Montreal, the city won’t fork over a dime of public money.

While Blackmon and Hornbeck disagree on that particular strategy, they mostly agreed on what to do with the Tropicana Field site.

Blackmon said he supports the city’s existing site master plan, which includes plans both with and without a stadium, including plans to establish kayaking along Booker Creek, a new hotel and retail space and a convention center. Hornbeck agreed. Both want to see the site used for new affordable housing and jobs.

Blackmon added that the city should consider in its plans to include an African American history museum to honor the communities displaced when Tropicana Field was first constructed.

Both candidates also diverged on solutions for bringing a grocery store — or some other type of market — to provide fresh, healthy and affordable food in south St. Pete. A Sweetbay formerly served the area, later replaced by a Walmart (both since shuttered).

Hornbeck supports using some form of bus or shuttle service to provide transportation to residents to get to grocery stores outside the district. He recognized that the “food desert” issue is a major problem for the community but cautioned the city couldn’t force businesses to operate there.

Blackmon rejected the shuttle idea.

“I just don’t think we should have to force people out of their neighborhoods to get groceries,” he said.

Instead, Blackmon pointed to affordable housing and better access to jobs as solutions. If more people live in the neighborhood, it drives demand; if those residents have living-wage jobs, they can better afford groceries.

Each candidate also weighed in on two hot topics in the city — the Central Avenue Bus Rapid Transit project and the city’s complete streets plan.

Hornbeck answered vaguely, saying the city should weigh the needs of those who drive versus those who walk, ride a bike or use transit. It’s a conversation he said he’s continuing with voters.

Blackmon mostly supported the BRT project, noting the city has long had an east-to-west transit corridor deficiency. On complete streets, though, he was split, agreeing with having sidewalk continuity throughout the city but concerned about adding bike lanes to major thoroughfares like Dr. ML King Jr. Street.

The two candidates are running for District 1, which includes west St. Pete.

Because they are the only two candidates in the race, Blackmon and Hornbeck will face each other on the Nov. 5 ballot. Three other City Council races will be on a primary vote Aug. 27.

The winner of the District 1 race replaces term-limited Charlie Gerdes.

This season, he signed to play with the Tampa Bay Rowdies, which is in the same tier as the Energy and Independence. He has had limited action after suffering a torn right quadricep muscle four months ago.

Siaj said it is great to be back playing soccer in America even though he is injured. The Rowdies lead the New York Red Bulls by two points for first place in the Eastern Conference standings. The 34-game regular season schedule lasts from March to October, with the Rowdies having 13 matches left.

Siaj’s short term goals are to get back to playing shape and play in as many games as he can with the Rowdies.

Yesterday, as I introduced this series, I focussed on an inside forward that made a lasting impression on me – Brian Lewis.

Today, as I continue the series, I’ve moved further back, as far as the pitch is concerned and selected a midfielder, Peter Anderson.

Anderson arrived at Kenilworth Road in the 1970 / 1971 season, arriving from non-league Hendon where his skills had attracted the attention of the Luton scouts.

During the remainder of his career, Anderson went on to play for San Diego Sockers, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Sheffield United (loan) and Millwall before finishing his career where it all started, at Hendon.

Audi, MLS Team To Advance Soccer's Future

Audi of America is partnering with Major League Soccer for  a new multiyear program, "Audi Goals Drive Progress," that will help fund MLS Academies, the development programs for aspiring professional players.

Audi will pledge funds to the Academies for every regular season and Audi MLS Cup Playoffs goal scored -- up to $1 million -- in 2019.

The Academies will use the money to develop programs at each club that support player education, housing and transportation, as well as for the launch of Audi Performance Centers. These Centers, located at select MLS Academies, will be equipped with technology, tutorial and educational resources to help enrich off-field academic development.

One of the first Audi Performance Centers is set to open at the Orlando City Soccer Club in late summer.

Fans can use social media to support the “Audi Goals Drive Progress” launch, too, by posting a celebratory message on their Twitter and/or Instagram accounts using their team-specific hashtag as well as @audi. At the end of the season, the team with the highest average fan social posts per game can earn an additional $50,000 for its club’s Academy.

ST. LOUIS - Major League Soccer's leadership will meet this week in Florida during the league’s All-Star Game festivities, but St. Louis fans should not anticipate news then about an expansion team coming to the city.

While Beckham and his partners later decided on the city-owned Melreese golf course property for the stadium, the group still plans to develop the Overtown land, partner Jorge Mas told the Miami Herald earlier this year.

Books on St Pete/Tampa Bay history?

Anyone have any great reads on area history? I'm looking for anything that gives a broad survey of the region's settlement and development—the wider the lens the better!

Cigar City Mafia is a great book on the history of Tampa’s mob.

I have this book. Almost couldn't put it down it that's interesting (to me):

'St Petersburg and the Florida Dream, 1888-1950' by Ray Arsenault

It actually starts in the mid 1500's with the original inhabitants of the area.

Covers mostly Pinellas and St Pete, so not TampaBay itself.

Read the book, then go downtown and look at the sculpture over the parking garage on 3rd street and Central. Stand at the west side of Lucky Dill and look up and west. It's all the generations of people that are covered in the book. You'll find out how things got built, named and the reasons why.

Edit: I'm sure Haslam's will have this book. Ray Arsenault is/was a professor at USF too.

Thank you!

Thanks I picked up a copy

Amazing!! Thank you so much! I can't wait to check it out—sounds like a perfect recommendation.

I don't know specific books, but Haslam's Books in DTSP has a good selection of books on St Pete and Tampa Bay history.

Perfect, I'll start there! Thank you!

Soccer icon wants to make Mesquite proud

Antonio Carlos “Tatu” Pecorari, one of the most iconic names in arena soccer history, has assembled an exemplary coaching staff to guide the Mesquite Outlaws into their 2019-20 inaugural season in the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL). He joins Nick Stavrou and Sagu to round out the coaching staff, creating a triple-threat leadership. As a coach, Tatu guided the Dallas Sidekicks and also won state and national titles in the competitive youth and high school ranks.

How did you get the nickname Tatu?

My father used to work on a railroad station. He’d go under the trains to check the brakes and make sure everything was OK like an armadillo under the ground, so they started calling him Tatu, they called my brother Tatu, and they called me Tatuzinho – it’s a small armadillo.

Why did you choose indoor soccer instead of outdoor?

I started out with outdoor (soccer) in Brazil, I attended a football program and I started playing professionally at 17 playing outdoor soccer. Then I came to the United States and I played for the Tampa Bay Rowdies, with the old NASL (North American Soccer League), and the league sold in 1983/84, and the only games available was to play indoor or go back to Brazil. So I decided to stay and play indoor like a lot of guys did at that time.

Where are they now? Following former FC Cincinnati players

In the first of a new series, Cincinnati Soccer Talk follows the path of former FC Cincinnati players Antoine Hoppenot, Mitch Hildebrandt, Tyler Polak, Omar Mohamed and Sean Okoli.

Antoine Hoppenot

Antoine Hoppenot was one of the originals. He signed with FC Cincinnati from the Philadelphia Union/Harrisburg City Islanders on a free transfer. He only appeared in 13 matches for FC Cincinnati. Hoppenot left the club after the 2016 season and joined Reno 1868 of the Western Conference of the USL. Hoppenot spent two seasons with Reno 1868, making the playoffs both seasons. Hoppenot scored 17 goals and added 22 assists over those two seasons in Reno. After the 2018 season, Hoppenot headed southeast, signing with the Tampa Bay Rowdies for the 2019 USL Championship season. His tenure with the Rowdies only lasted less than half the season, as the Rowdies dealt him to Louisville City on June 27. Hoppenot has scored twice this season, once in Open Cup play for the Rowdies and once in USL Championship play for Louisville City.

The Storm returns to Angel of the Winds Arena for a rematch of the 2018 WNBA Finals vs. Washington

The Seattle Sounders FC celebrated their ninth season in Major League Soccer by capturing the 2016 MLS Cup, taking down Toronto FC in the championship on penalty kicks. The Sounders pulled off one of the biggest comebacks in MLS history, climbing six spots to reach the playoffs after winning eight of their final 14 matches.

Founded in 2017, the Seattle Seawolves have quickly built a dynasty with back-to-back Major League Rugby championships, becoming the only Seattle professional sports team in history to defend a title. A testament to the community’s embrace of the sport, the Seawolves sold out their season tickets and single game seats before their 2018 home opener. Fueled by a league-leading 283 point from Brock Staller, the Seawolves upset the Glendale Raptors in the 2018 season to seal the first MLR championship and held onto that title in 2019, defeating the San Diego Legion.

https://www.outsidethebeltway.com/cowboys-yankees-ranked-as-worlds-two-most-valuable-sports-franchises/

Cowboys, Yankees Ranked As World’s Two Most Valuable Sports Franchises

New estimates place the Cowboys and Yankees at the top of the list of the most valuable sports franchises in the world.

Also worth noting is the fact that every franchise in the three major American sports leagues — the NFL, MLB, and NBA — are worth at least $1 billion. It’s also worth noting that there are no NHL or MLS (Major League Soccer) franchises in the top fifty list and that there are eight international soccer franchises, most of them from the United Kingdom, in the top fifty. This isn’t entirely surprising given the fact that it was just four years ago that the Los Angeles Clippers, generally seen as the lesser of the two Los Angeles NBA franchises, were sold for $2 billion at what was essentially a “fire sale” given the fact that the previous owner had been banned from the NBA due to a history of racist comments on his part. As several analysts who look at the issue of the valuation of sports franchises noted at the time, if the Clippers were worth $2 billion then there were dozens of other teams in all the other American leagues that were likely worth far more. Indeed, the current list values the Clippers at $2.2 billion which places them near the bottom of the top fifty, while the Lakers are valued at $3.7 billion.

J King's Corner (Week 20) TBR v STL 4-1

Championship or Bust- Going to keep it pretty short this week (I think) mostly because the Rowdies have done most of the talking for me by their performance on the field. Every week it seems I'm amazed that we have an offense that runs through Leo Fernandes, a guy who struggled to be healthy and get consistent minutes in the Campbell era. I've taken the most humble pie over Seba Guenzatti who has 12 goals on the season which is still incredulous to me. Guenzatti was another guy floundering during the Campbell era. Poku looked like a shell of a soccer player when we picked him up midway through last season. Damaged goods was the assumption. Every time I go through the tape, Poku RARELY makes a mistake. His passing and dribbling ability is MLS quality right now. I'm at the point where Poku is a must-start each week. The Rowdies are playing like the best team in the east. The Red Bulls match tonight will have a lot to say about their championship aspirations.

Dismantling St Louis- I heard that STL FC was struggling even though they did make it to the Open Cup quarter-final which could be the reason for the USL slide. They had five injuries so that can't be good for morale and depth. The Rowdies may've caught St Louis on a night where they hoped to survive to a 0-0 or 1-1 result and that doesn't work against the 2019 Rowdies anymore. Ottawa was playing the same style of game and the Rowdies were still able to outwork them in the final minutes. This match was happily much less stressful. When Richards and Fernandes are banging home easy goals in the box, you know the Rowdies have it going on all cylinders.

The slightest of criticisms- As I go in-depth studying every game and each player's performance, the criticisms I'm finding for individual players are very slight. As a team, the Rowdies are a well-coached and well-oiled machine. The only consistent issues I often come across are poor passes by Dominic Oduro. Tejada and Fernandes dribbling into turnovers against good defenders. And on rare occasion, Morad, Richards, or Diakite get too bold and they end up out of position or allowing a free runner. Coach Collins has done well with his lineup decisions and substitutions. I like how he uses his positional flexibility to give teams different looks in the midfield and on the wings. Even though Richards and Tejada aren't great on the wings, getting them some different positional experience could help them grow into even more versatile players.

J King's Corner (Week 21) NYRB2 v TBR 2-0

The Tables have Shifted- Two weeks ago I remarked that the Rowdies would likely have difficulties against either St Louis or Baby Bulls and it was always more likely to be a road contest against one of the trickiest teams to play in USL. It's very hard to gauge what sort of Baby Bulls team is going to show up. At the very least it's understood the Baby Bulls are offense over everything and they have a lot of talented unpredictable young talent on their squad. The Rowdies were capable to draw or even win this game, but ultimately the Rowdies fell into playing at the Baby Bulls pace and style of play which became their undoing.

The Long Ball Open Field Approach- The biggest advantage the Baby Bulls have is their identity to make the playing field as open as possible. The Baby Bulls are always searching to spread defenses and force defenses to miscommunicate or mismark and that's how they create their havoc. The Baby Bulls don't like to get into long stretches of possession or hold up play. They play for the through ball or the long ball. It's effective on the attack and puts them in difficult spots on the counter.

Morad gets torched- Both goals were because of very poor play by Tarek Morad. The first goal was simply a poor back pass that Morad was too cheeky with and didn't get enough on the ball allowing it go into no man's land. Robinson was right to come out to attempt to sweep it. I would say the only mistake by Robinson was coming to the ball at an angle telegraphing that his momentum would carry him left and Jorgenson just flicked the ball to his left leaving Robinson in the dust.

The second goal was an even worse mistake by Morad because he just allowed Jorgenson to go right behind him for an easy through pass. Morad starting cheating towards Jorgenson and it opened a wide-open lane right in the box. Morad had another poor moment in the 69th minute where he missed a touch on a long ball that went for a goal-scoring opportunity that Robinson had to save.

Chances Unfulfilled- The Rowdies had plenty of chances to score. They were creating opportunities and you would expect that against this Baby Bulls squad. They have a very young squad which means they're very culpable to mistakes despite their raw talent. Guenzatti should've had goal #13 but Luoro continues to be a pain in the ass for the Rowdies. Steinberger blasting the ball over on the rebound was painful. The Rowdies desperately needed that response. Fernandes had a good shot that was saved very early on. Mkosana was a foot offside after he put one in the back of the net. Mkosana put a ball on a tee back post that Guenzatti whiffed on. Guenzatti had a back post header opportunity he put over. The most laughable of all was a perfect cross two feet in front of the goal that Siaj blasts straight up into the air and over the net.

Wolyniec shines again- The Baby Bulls got into portions of the game where Johnson and Fernandes were pretty well swallowed up once they were down two goals. The Rowdies weren't having any success controlling the midfield, or possession of the ball, even when they got the one-man advantage. Wolyniec gets credit for what he's done with the Bulls 2 team and its credit he deserves. Wolyniec seems like the sort of coach who studies a lot of film in order to prepare his players for what they're up against.

McCarthy concerns- Not having McCarthy wasn't the reason the Rowdies lost this game but it's better to have him in between the pipes then not. Hopefully, it's just a cautionary one game hold out of the lineup if he tweaked something. I was thinking about today how frustrating it is that the USL doesn't have an injury report where teams have to give a little more detail than, an "injured arm or leg".

Ryan Davis appreciation section- I keep meaning to do this and this is as good as any time. I was very critical of the commentary booth last season, ultimately to the point where I kept the volume pretty low during broadcasts. This season has been the exact opposite. I'm all aboard the Ryan Davis commentary hype train. First and foremost, he just seems like an extremely likable guy. This one is major contrast to the Red Bulls commentary guy who I appreciated that he would criticize players but he analysis was pretty inconsistent. Davis plays lightly as a homer but I never feel like he's overhyping any player or providing incredulous analysis. Davis also is one of the few USL broadcasters who can genuinely make me laugh or smile. He's good at his job. Just had to take a paragraph out to appreciate his great work.

Goodbye Warriors, hello Roots: can this team spark a soccer revolution in Oakland?

Devante Dubose was the first player to sign with Oakland Roots SC. Photograph: Oakland Roots SC

Devante Dubose’s soccer career took him across the world before it took him home. The 26-year-old is the first player to sign for Oakland Roots Sports Club, a new team hoping to spark a soccer revolution in Oakland, his hometown.

The Roots will play their first game on 31 August and have applied to join the National Independent Soccer Association, the third tier of professional soccer in the US. It’s a humble start, but Dubose thinks it can help Oakland recover from a painful loss. Two of its three famous sports franchises, the Golden State Warriors basketball team and the Raiders football team, are leaving or have just left the city.

John Romano: If the Rays are serious about this split plan, they should be willing to offer the city something of value in return for altering Tropicana Field’s use agreement.

St. Petersburg mayor Rick Kriseman faces some risks consider the Rays request to pursue splitting seasons between Tampa Bay and Montreal. This fan made it clear where he stands at a recent Rays game.

Rays owner on St. Petersburg meeting: 'We had a nice conversation'

Tuesday's meeting between Rays management and St. Petersburg city leaders lasted a little more than 90 minutes.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Tampa Bay Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg said he did not ask for St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman's permission to explore splitting the team’s home games between two cities during their Tuesday afternoon meeting.

The private meeting at the old St. Petersburg police headquarters also included St. Petersburg Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin and Rays President Brian Auld. It lasted a little more than 90 minutes.

“It was good to talk. It was nice to see the mayor and his crew, and we had a nice conversation,” Sternberg said after the meeting.

A reporter asked Sternberg if the two sides accomplished anything.

“Yeah, the first thing is sitting down and talking,” Sternberg said. “That was an accomplishment.”

Sternberg said Rays management and St. Petersburg leaders plan to sit and talk again “in the near future.”

Tuesday marked the first time the two sides had a formal conversation since the announcement the Major League Baseball team was considering splitting time between the Tampa Bay area and Montreal.

The Rays are committed to their lease at Tropicana Field through the 2027 season. The team would need the city of St. Petersburg’s permission to explore playing games in other cities.

The split-city concept also has several other challenges, which includes paying for at least one new stadium and getting the MLB Players Association to agree.

Kriseman’s staff said the mayor left the building Tuesday afternoon and managed to avoid media members. His staff called it a “cordial meeting.”

If the split-city concept happened, Sternberg previously said the team would play the first half of a season somewhere in Tampa Bay, have a "summer sendoff" and then have a second Opening Day in Montreal midseason.

http://www.aroundosceola.com/sports/tampa-rays-two-city-plan-doesn-t-make-sense/article_04ba9998-ae1b-11e9-8b0c-f3eff3cfc3f2.html

Tampa Rays two-city plan doesn’t make sense

Long frustrated by his inability to get a new baseball stadium built in the bay area, Tampa Rays owner Stuart Sternberg floated an idea that the team was exploring a two-city plan, where the Rays would call Tampa home for the first half of the season and play the second half in Montreal.

Montreal is supposedly a hot bed topic for baseball expansion, although it’s hard to see why since the city’s former major league team high-tailed it out of city in 2004 after years of low attendance to become the Washington Nationals in 2004.

In Sternberg’s plan, the Rays would play April, May and June in Tampa and the rest of the season in Montreal – preferably in new stadiums at both cities.

Sternberg noted this plan was not simply a good idea, it was a great idea and the only one option he has left.

There is a little precedent in a dual city franchise. Back in 2003, the Expos (suffering from low attendance, sound familiar?) received permission and played 22 home games in Puerto Rico.

The Rays announced this plan after Major League Baseball gave them permission to pursue this option.

“I’m confident it’s an amazing idea,” Sternberg said publicly. “Every turn, every what-if, what-if, only leads to more opportunity, more fandom, more joy.” He went on to down-play that this “plan” was simply a ploy to get a new stadium built in Tampa or help clear the public relations path for a permanent move out of Tampa.

There are incredible problems and obstacles standing in the way. Give the Rays credit for creative thinking, but the idea of a split season falls apart before you even start any deep thinking on how this two-city plan could work.

First, and perhaps most important, the Rays would have to break a lease that binds them to St. Petersburg and Tropicana Field through the 2027 season.

The city of St. Petersburg, which owns the facility, has no intention of letting the Rays remove 41 home games from their building.

“I want to be crystal clear. The Rays cannot explore playing major league baseball games in Montreal, or anywhere else for that matter, prior to 2028 without reaching a formal memorandum of understanding with the city of St. Petersburg,” Mayor Rick Kriseman said. He flat out stated he has no intention of even taking the Rays plan before city council, which effectively could nix the idea for eight more seasons.

On a practical matter, splitting the season between two countries would be tough on the front office employees, players and coaches.

The red tape for obtaining part-time resident status for players and employees would be mind boggling and asking the players and employees to find and maintain two different residences during a sixth month period would be cumbersome at best. Not to mention players and front office staff with young children at home.

Go to school in Tampa through the academic year, move to Montreal, start school in Canada for the next year and then transfer back to the Bay area in March would create incredible stains on the families.

While some may counter that the majority of Tampa’s roster is usually made up of young players who do not have school age children, those same players are playing on rookie contracts that would create a financial burden if you ask them to maintain two residences. In short, it is doubtful that the players’ association would approve of this plan without major financial considerations to the players.

And then there’s this scenario. Rays have a great season and make the playoffs. Who gets to host the post-season home games? That would make for an interesting discussion.

Of course at the heart of the matter is Sternberg’s desire to play in a new government-funded stadium (or stadiums). The reality is the Tampa/St. Pete governments have balked at building a half a billion dollar playhouse for a rich owner and talk of a new stadium in Montreal is just that – talk. For years, franchises have always threatened to move in order to extract new stadiums at public expense. As the Rays have found out, cities have started calling out that bluff and are becoming less likely to commit public tax dollars towards a private enterprise.

The fact that the Rays are trying to get two new stadiums built to share a team is laughable.

That said, what was this announcement really about? Although Sternberg scoffed at the notion that this is simply a public relations ploy to allow the Rays to eventually leave and be able to blame city (We gave them the only viable option to keep the team – even though it was only for half a season), it appears that this plan is exactly that – a ploy to blame others when the team does decide to move.

The plan of a two-city franchise in two different countries in unwieldy, unworkable and perhaps a little insane.

Ideally, during the next few years, Tampa and/or St. Petersburg will sit down with Sternberg and try to come to an agreement on a new stadium and how much each side would be willing to contribute to the project.

If no agreement is eminent, the Rays will most likely continue to search for a city willing to build them a new home and the team will relocate permanently.

Major changes ahead for St. Pete’s Commerce Park

Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin speaking about housing in Commerce Park at Wednesday's press conference.

Two influential players in the global marina industry are poised to make a big investment in Commerce Park, an economically challenged area of south St. Petersburg.

Their investment depends in part on changes in the existing lease and development agreement for Commerce Park. The amended agreement would extend the development deadline in return for immediate job creation — at least 62 new jobs no later than Oct. 15. It also mandates the creation of up to 300 residential units with workforce and affordable housing components, as one part of the 10-year affordable housing proposal Mayor Rick Kriseman unveiled Wednesday.

The St. Petersburg City Council will consider the changes to the development agreement on Aug. 1.

On the edge: Neighborhood gets connected thanks to collaboration

A tech entrepreneur gets creative in his quest to bridge a digital divide.

Free, open-access public Wi-Fi is now available throughout the EDGE District, one of downtown St. Petersburg’s fastest-growing neighborhoods. The upgrade stems from a collaboration among GoZone WiFi, hardware supplier Cambium Networks and the EDGE Business District Association, along with support from sponsors UPC Insurance and Goldman Wetzel Law Firm.

GoZone, headquartered in the EDGE District, is run by serial tech entrepreneur Todd Myers, who says he’s long been vexed by the “digital divide” that limits the availability of fast, free, easily accessible wireless internet service in public areas. "There’s a huge demand for good public Wi-Fi hotspots," Myers says. "But it can be very difficult to use those hotspots.”

Albert Whitted Airport Plan for the Future to Look at Extending Runway

ST. PETERSBURG — Historically, a lot of conversations about the future of Albert Whitted Airport have jumped off from the idea of closing the airport and building something else on its prime waterfront property.

"Same old story: It's an ideal location," says Jack Tunstill, a longtime Albert Whitted pilot, flight instructor and chairman of the airport's advisory committee. He hears this less than he used to, thanks to a 2003 referendum in which St. Petersburg voters affirmed the airport's future as, well, an airport. Still, the idea comes up once in a while. Mayor Rick Kriseman himself floated it in 2014.

Soon, however, the talk will be less about what else could be developed at Albert Whitted and more about what might be developed nearby. The city-owned and -operated airport is putting together its first master plan since 2005. Two topics are expected to get a lot of attention: extending and shifting the main runway and finding space for more hangars.

And officials say shifting the runway east could create development opportunities for the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. Also expected to get a look: adding hangar space.

A small airplane takes off from Albert Whitted Airport recently. The city of St. Petersburg is updating its master plan for the airport. The plan will look at extending the main runway and building new hangers.

David Beckham makes first two signings for new MLS side

David Beckham's new MLS side Inter Miami have announced Argentine duo Matias Pellegrini and Julian Carranza as the club's first two signings since forming as a club last year.
The former Manchester United and England midfielder, who spent five years in the MLS with LA Galaxy, commenced work on founding an expansion side in 2014 soon after his retirement.

Last year, it was confirmed that the Miami Beckham United group had officially been awarded the 25th MLS franchise and would join the division for the 2020 season.

Inter Miami confirmed earlier this week that the club had made an important step in its development by securing its first pair of signings.

Pellegrini, who broke into the Estudiantes first team during the 2018-19 season, will return to his parent club on loan until January 2020.

Plan the Parade! Who is Detroit’s Next Championship Team?

We invited some special guests to talk Red Wings, Pistons, Lions, and Tigers...plus a surprise 5th team!

Detroit City Football Club

HEAR ME OUT. Well, don’t hear me out, but rather our pal Laura (@NGSLoreRah) on why Detroit City Football Club (commonly referred to as Detroit City FC, DCFC, City, or Le Rouge) is one of the good ones, a champion of the Motor City spirit, and why they might just be the next champion of champions for Detroit...

“DCFC is not an MLS/USL affiliated club, but it is going pro!”

The American soccer system is aptly described by Laura as “mad-hattery”, so for uneducated rubes like myself just wave your hands around and yell CAPITALISM and that will explain why it’s hard to define what is or isn’t a professional soccer team and why the leagues are all eating each other.

History 101:

“Passion for Our City, Passion for the Game” – DCFC Club Motto

“DCFC was born out of the Detroit City Futbol League (created in 2010), a co-ed recreational league formed from teams out of the historic neighborhoods of the city itself. The club first played in the National Premier Soccer League in 2012.

The NPSL has been looking to improve the development of the sport in the country by providing a more viable professional alternative to USL/MLS clubs and now City looks to participate in the 2019 Founder’s Cup, which will help lay the groundwork for Hell Yeah Brother NPSL Pro in the future.”

Act like you’ve been there before:

“City won its first championship in 2017, when they defeated Ann Arbor to win the Midwest Conference Title. They then went as far as the NPSL’s National Semifinals that season. They also have won the Great Lakes Division title by placing first in their group in 2013 and 2019. City has also participated in the US Open Cup in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2018, making it as far as the second round in both 2016 and 2018.

They also are the owners of the trophy from the now-defunct Rust Belt Derby, which was played between former division rivals FC Buffalo and the dead-as-of-2017 AFC Cleveland. The derby was played from 2012-2016, with Detroit City FC winning out from 2013-2016.

Fun fact: You can now find that trophy at the City Clubhouse above the bar.”

State of the Team: Movin’ On Up

“At the end of the 2018 season, City saw a change in its Head Coach with longtime coach Ben Pirmann stepped down to serve as an Assistant Coach with USL Club Memphis 901 FC.

City’s current Head Coach is now Trevor ‘Mother F’ing’ James (as so lovingly referred to by DCFC supporters). With the coaching change has come an extremely fruitful NPSL regular season. The club finished as the Great Lakes Division Champions and went to the Midwest Conference Finals with a record of 11-1-4 (Wins-Losses-Ties). The club also went unbeaten for 14 games and a goal differential of +35 (43 goals for, 8 goals against).”

How will DCFC be the next champion from Detroit?

They are They were almost kind of the champs right now.

“A lot of people throw out the ‘DCFC IS NOT MLS/PROFESSIONAL/I AM OLD AND YELLING AT CLOUDS’ argument when City supporters bring up how technically it is the franchise that has most recently won championship titles for the city of Detroit.

Here’s the thing though, they just lost the 2019 NPSL Midwest Conference finals in penalty kicks, but the club looks to bounce back to capture another championship for the City. The season isn’t finished yet, as City now looks to compete in the Founder’s Cup starting in August, which will lay the groundwork for a full professional season in the future.”

Sara Sez: If losing a championship due to something really stupid like a skills competition doesn’t capture the spirit of Detroit and convince you that DCFC has a place in the Motor City pantheon of major league sports, nothing will.

What Have We Learned Today? DCFC Sparks Joy:

“DCFC very much is a team that sprouted from the heart of Detroit, and has taken roots within the community, not just on the pitch during play, but with outreach and programs to help support the city it so lovingly calls home.

Also – for the price of one beer at LCA/Ford Field/Comerica, you can have two at Keyworth. And proceeds go to youth soccer programs.

Just throwing that out there.”
