CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The International Champion’s Cup and Bank of America Stadium said they are making two big announcements Tuesday afternoon.

Ever since David Tepper took over as the owner of the Carolina Panthers, he has talked about wanting to bring the MLS to Charlotte

In February, the Panthers hosted meetings to get public opinion about bringing MLS to Bank of America stadium.

The high turnout at Bank of America’s hosting of the Gold Cup Tournament back in June demonstrates strong public interest

Recent signs hint that the announcement maybe about bringing and MLS team to the Carolinas.

Soccer promoter announces long-term deal to bring more pro games to Panthers stadium

Relevent Sports Group, which operates and promotes the International Champions Cup soccer exhibition, announced Tuesday that it has signed a five-year deal with Bank of America Stadium to host professional international soccer matches in Charlotte. It’s Relevent’s first long-term deal with any host city.

Relevent also announced that it has picked Charlotte to host this year’s House of Soccer on July 19 and 20. The fan fest is expected to draw tens of thousands of people to Romare Bearden Park. In years past, the star-studded event has included appearances by celebrities such as Drake, Odell Beckham Jr. and Nicki Minaj.

“It’s worth noting that Charlotte is a soccer city, and today is a validation of that,” Carolina Panthers president Tom Glick told reporters after a press conference at the stadium Tuesday.

Daniel Sillman, Relevent’s CEO, told the Observer this week that the announcements underscore the support for professional soccer in Charlotte, bolstering the city’s bid for a Major League Soccer team.

CPL clubs face MLS hurdles in Canadian championship's third round

Canada's version of England's FA Cup heats up in the third round starting Wednesday.

Canada's three Major League Soccer clubs, a trio of Canadian Premier League sides and a United Soccer League outfit remain in the hunt for the Canadian championship.

The Voyageurs Cup is the highest domestic competition for clubs vying to play in the CONCACAF Champions League and potentially the FIFA Club World Cup.

Canada's championship has a similar dynamic on a smaller scale to the FA Cup field that runs the gamut from Premier League giants to non-league minnows with the odd buzzy upset.

The MLS's Vancouver Whitecaps and Montreal Impact face the CPL's Calgary Cavalry and York 9 respectively, and the USL's Ottawa Fury and CPL's Halifax Wanderers meet in the third round.

Defending champion Toronto FC has a bye to the semifinal round and awaits the winner of Halifax-Ottawa.

Calvary and York 9 are both at home Wednesday for the opening legs of their home-and-home series against MLS clubs.

Soccer: Celtic FC America looks to find permanent home in League City

The Celtic FC America soccer team plays its home games at Clear Springs High School. The team will take on Atletico Katy at 2:45 p.m., this Saturday.

Some pretty salty teams have graced the soccer field at Clear Springs High School and now another is hoping to gain a strong foothold.

Celtic FC America, a semi-professional team of 18- to 24-year-olds mostly from the Bay Area, has just begun its season competing in the United States Soccer League.

“There are 10 divisions in soccer in America, and we’re fourth from the top,” said Brendan Keyes, who wears many hats with Celtic FC America. “At the top there’s Major League Soccer, the (United Soccer League), the (National Premier Soccer League) and then us.

“It’s very high-quality soccer, and we play all over the United States.”

Keyes, a Dublin, Ireland native who serves as the team’s owner, coach and general manager, says that Clear Springs High School serves as an ideal location for the team to play its games.

The next home game for Celtic FC America will be at 2:45 p.m., this Saturday against Atletico Katy in a USSL matchup. Other home games are set for July 27, Aug. 31 and Sept. 7.

Teams in the league include Pachuca Tuzos Houston, Pasadena Armadillos FC, West Houston Aguilas, Austin Real Cuauhtemoc and Atletico Katy.

There are 32 USSL teams nationwide with the local group competing for the Texas Cup.

“We can play in the (Lamar Hunt) U.S. Open Cup, and we do play in it,” Keyes said.

On the local stage, Keyes the interest rapidly growing.
