So I'm starting to come to some fascinating personal revelations with the scouting and study I've been doing. My goal when starting this project was to gain a deeper understanding beyond the statistics to see how each player effects a team. Soccer stars are probably the most misleading of any sport. Dominic Oduro is second on the team in shots and passing accuracy percentage, first in passing accuracy in the opponents half. If you looked at those stats in a vacuum, you'd think he's a good shooter and a great passer. Rewarding a player for making easy passes doesn't make that player a great passer. There's a reason Oduro is a central defensive midfielder, he's a good defender. Passing is actually a part of the game he needs to clean up because he's been the cause behind some really bad turnovers.
If you look at impact across the board, you can see how important midfielders are, and in the Rowdies case, how damn good all our midfielders have been. Midfielders are involved in both the offensive and defensive aspects of the game. Good midfielders have to be capable at dribbling, passing, and defending. That's why David Najem isn't as productive as his counterparts. He's not a pinpoint accurate passer.
You can also see the emphasis of team defense. Guys like Ekra and Fernandes are stopping the ball from ever getting to a point where the backline has to step in. Guenzatti and Tejada are key factors in defense and they are playing as centre-forwards!
My system for scoring the games isn't perfected yet, and I do need to update my manual to reflect how I judge plays for positive and negative results. But so far I think there's a decent representation of who is making in what sorts of impacts from game to game.
If you do go to the Rowdies stats page (stats still have value, they just don't tell the full story) Diakite's defensive numbers are absolutely out of this world.
Diakite has won 60 of his 82 aerial duels. He has 99 clearances. Morad is next on the team with 45. He has won 12 of his 13 tackles. And he has won 86 of his 130 duels (whatever those are...).

From what I gather by the timing of these moves and the players moved, Collins and Cohen are not seeing production from any of their depth forwards. It's been a shock to me how productive Guenzatti and Tejada have both been on the goal scoring front considering I don't see either as lethal finishers or shooters. They're definitely getting a scoring boost from how well the entire team performs defensively and every attacking midfielder and most of the wingers create tons of chances.
As for Allen and Hoppenot, Allen had 4 starts and Hoppenot had 3 and they didn't really make a mark in limited playing time. Hoppenot I think is more of a playmaker type forward than a goal scorer so he could have some value for Lou City if that's their tactical need. Allen is going to Memphis where I think it'll be a struggle for him.
Mkosana is a veteran goal scorer so he might be a Martin Paterson type who is trying to get the ball at his feet in and around the box and trying to build on his 4 goal season. The good news about Mkosana statistically is that a lot of his shots have been on target this season and last season he had 22 shots on target and 11 goals. His conversion rate has been above 20% which I like as a benchmark stat for forwards who shoot a lot. Mkosana is a name I've known just from matches he's played against us in previous seasons.
This move also tells you that the Rowdies don't think Leon Taylor is ready for more minutes if the Rowdies are bringing in a veteran goal scorer for the stretch run.

Lucky is a great pick-up. He's always been one that got away for me. Especially as he torched us match after match, club after club, and league after league. All while the Rowdies lacked a quality up front presence beyond Georgi. Yet he remained well liked and respective in the TBR community. I'm hoping he will see some quality playing time tonite!
I’m for it. I think Lucky brings a different look up top than our current Striker set. My guess is Hoppenot would have been great in either a creative central midfielder or a wide forward attacker in a 3 forward setup, but certainly couldn’t be a better wingback than our current options or bump Tinari/Steinberger or even Poku if you wanted to play him higher up.
Wanting to tailgate with some friends, anyone know how early we can get there?

I'm a fan of the opposing team so, sorry I don't know how helpful this will be. But I was told tailgating starts around 5 or 5:30 PM
4pm is when the main lot opens at ALS. However, most of the spots there are reserved for season ticket holders....which ends up working out in a way that the lot ends up being half empty and looks deserted up until right before kick off. But either way, there will be plenty of tailgating action going on so come on down! If you have issues with getting in and parking in the lot, try to find a spot near by and walk on over. There are multiple paring garages in the area as well.

Rays revisit Al Lang Stadium as alternative to Tropicana Field
T. PETERSBURG, Fla. (FOX 13) - An idea the Rays have floated for their proposed poly amorous relationship with Tampa Bay is a new ball park at Al Lang Stadium on St. Pete's waterfront.
"That's absolutely a possibility," said Stu Sternberg, principal owner of the team, when he was asked during a news conference Tuesday.
The Rays recently bought the Rowdies Soccer Team, and they have a contract with the city of St. Petersburg to play soccer at Al Lang through November 2020.
If the Rays also play baseball at Al Lang, it could be leveraged for renewing a contract with the city.
Joe Zeoli, St. Pete's director of development says the Rays could play baseball at Al Lang, but that would require St. Pete to let the Rays out of their contract at Tropicana Field which expires in 2027.
If the idea sounds familiar -- in 2008 the Rays proposed a new stadium at Al Lang but that failed.
Sternberg has said, whether St. Pete or Tampa, having a team to themselves won't work.
"All for their own won't be an option going forward," Sternberg said. "Just not going to be an option going forward."
Mayor Rick Kriseman has made it clear if the team wants a three-way relationship with the region -- they'll get no public money from St. Pete.
New St. Petersburg Ballpark Could Factor into Rays Tampa Bay/Montreal Plan
The Al Lang Stadium site could be in play for a new ballpark as the Tampa Bay Rays explore a split Tampa Bay/Montreal arrangement, though it is far from certain at this stage.
It was revealed last week that Major League Baseball is allowing the Rays to explore a concept that would allow the franchise to split its seasons between Tampa Bay and Montreal. Plenty of obstacles would have to be overcome to make the idea a reality, but the plan could include new open-air ballparks in both markets. The open-air designs would result in lower construction costs, while allowing the Rays to plan their schedule around optimal weather conditions–spring and early summer games could be played in the Tampa Bay region, with summer and early fall games in Montreal.
The Rays publicly discussed the situation on Tuesday, noting that their goal is to start any potential split-season arrangement in 2024. As for ballpark plans, the team is floating the idea of maintaining its Tampa Bay-based operations in St. Petersburg at a new open-air facility. The waterfront Al Lang Stadium, the team’s former spring-training home and a location once proposed for a Tropicana Field replacement, is among the sites that the organization would consider. For his part, St. Petersburg mayor Rick Kriseman is expressing a willingness to discuss the idea, but with the caveat that any new ballpark constructed as part of a split-season arrangement be built without any city funds. The few remaining wisps of goodwill remaining between Tampa Bay and its Major League Baseball franchise evaporated this week when team owner Stu Sternberg floated a fantasy of having his Rays split its home games with the City of Montreal.
Reaction was swift and negative with St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman, calling the hare-brained scheme “nonsensical” and a possible violation of the team’s agreement with the City of St. Petersburg. The attendance-challenged Rays currently schedule all 81 home games at St. Pete’s Tropicana Field.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred’s airing of such a preposterous proposal is viewed both locally and nationally as baseball’s last swing in coercing Tampa Bay taxpayers to foot the bill for a new stadium that would benefit billionaire Sternberg.
The plan -- if it can even be termed as such -- calls for playing early-season games in Florida. That supposedly would preclude the need for a domed stadium, a must in the dead of summer. But it rains in Florida and a stadium with no roof cannot be multi-use, previously the major selling point of a taxpayer-supported stadium by influence-peddling public officials.
MLB’s players’ association would have plenty to say about its membership forced to purchase/rent living space in two separate cities. And where would playoff games be played? Not in Tampa if one subscribes to the weather argument.
Kriseman asserted unequivocally that “ultimately, such a decision is up to me and I have no intention of bringing this latest idea to our city council to consider. In fact, I believe this is getting a bit silly.”
The Rays cannot explore playing any Major League Baseball games in Montreal or anywhere else prior to 2028, without reaching a formal memorandum of understanding with the City of St. Petersburg.
Reaction to Sternberg’s polyandric panacea for low attendance was fast and furious. David Hill of FanSided called a Rays permanent relocation “inevitable.”
“Baseball simply is not working in the Tampa Bay-St. Petersburg area,” Hill wrote. “Yes, the ratings are nice, but the Rays cannot survive on just television ratings alone. People need to come to the stadium and buy merchandise as well.”
USA Today opined that Sternberg’s announcement represented "a very, very bad day for baseball enthusiasts in Tampa and St. Petersburg, as their fears of regular-season, big-league baseball vanishing from their market moved from the abstract toward reality.”
Dan Schlossberg wrote in Forbes that the sharing arrangement would actually pit Tampa Bay and Montreal against each other.
“Since both Montreal and Tampa Bay need new ballparks to be competitive, the two-city concept almost sounds like a scenario for “Beat the Clock,” according to Scholssberg. Whoever builds first wins. Or so it seems, despite claims from Manfred and Sternberg that this is not an automatic mandate for relocation.”
In a Washington Examiner opinion piece entitled “Don’t let the Tampa Bay Rays screw taxpayers in two cities,” Tom Joyce wrote, “As if the benefit of taxpayer-funded stadiums had not been debunked by multiple studies and articles, this one is worse than usual.
“Economically, it’s hard to justify spending big money in either of the Rays’ proposed markets, since there isn’t much of a baseball market in either Tampa or Montreal. While the Rays’ average attendance this year is bad, it’s still higher than anything the Montreal Expos got in their final four seasons as a franchise,” Joyce wrote.
Somehow Montreal, though unable to support the Expos, always has its name in the mix of cities ripe for major league baseball and willing to fund, at least partially, new stadiums. The other names: Portland, Las Vegas, Charlotte, and Nashville.
Despite leading the wild card race in the American League, the Rays sport an average attendance of 14,546 -- second lowest in the Majors, ahead of only the Miami Marlins. Last month the Rays drew a franchise-worst 5,786 fans. The previous low was 6,509 on Sept. 5, 2017 when a hurricane was forecast.
The Rays’ opening day payroll of around $65 million was among the lowest in baseball, according to ESPN. Among the difficulty in securing a new stadium, a paucity of local revenue and a poor local-television deal, the Rays have been seen by other cities as a relocation target.
It's really a shame that the Rays will eventually leave the Tampa Bay area, but it can't come as a surprise. The TB/Montreal half & half proposal is idiotic, but it won't make any difference come 2027 or earlier. The current ownership group won't carry the weight of a fair percentage of the cost of a new stadium so kiss 'em goodbye!
I went to a baseball stadium once, to attend a concert. I thought they could have designed the stadium better for the music fans.

MONTREAL — The son of former Montreal Expos owner Charles Bronfman believes the predominantly French-speaking city is ready and willing to support — and share — the Tampa Bay Rays.
Private equity investor Stephen Bronfman leads a group working on bringing baseball back to Montreal and said Wednesday the city can embrace the sport again. He called the idea of one team in two cities groundbreaking.
Commissioner Rob Manfred said last week the Rays have "broad permission to explore what's available." Tampa Bay is averaging 14,546 fans a game, lowest in the American League and well below the MLB average of 27,360. Only the Miami Marlins draw smaller crowds, averaging 9,378.

This is about Tampa Bay keeping its hometown team and Montreal having one, too. I believe strongly in the sister-city concept. We’re asking for open minds.”

An agreement between the Rays and St. Petersburg for Tropicana Field runs through 2027. St. Petersburg’s mayor has shot down the two-city possibility.
“The City of St. Petersburg will not participate in the funding of a new stadium for a part-time team,” Mayor Rick Kriseman said.
WASHINGTON, DC (June 28, 2019) US Soccer Players - You probably didn’t see this coming, what with Sacramento standing by with the red carpet already rolled out for MLS to come calling and St Louis priming itself to be the next darling of the expansion parade. Even MLS commissioner Don Garber’s declarations that MLS won’t, in fact, stop at 28 might not have prepared anybody for the speed at which things are moving forward for a 30th team.
MLS has a backlog of three teams with Nashville, Austin, and Miami still in buildup mode. By the time the summer is over, that number could be five. The league has no problem handing out expansion franchises with previously awarded teams yet to make their competitive debut.
While the backlog probably won’t grow before Nashville and Miami join league play next season, a clear frontrunner has emerged for team 30. News that MLS planned to expand to at least 30 teams had cities lining up in recent months. Among the contending markets that have emerged, in addition to Detroit’s finalist bid from the last round of expansion, are Phoenix, Las Vegas, Indianapolis, and Raleigh.
Tampa and San Antonio have been in the mix in the past, but the status of their bid unclear. San Diego looks to be off the board, but it’s impossible to know if a new plan for that city might pop up.
The city with the inside track on number 30 per the reporting of Brian Straus at SI.com is Charlotte, North Carolina. Charlotte’s bid turns on a number of factors, not the least of which is the backing of Dave Tepper, owner of the Carolina Panthers. Upon taking control of the Panthers and Bank of America Stadium in 2017, Tepper immediately mentioned bringing MLS to Charlotte as part of his plan.
North Carolina FC Moves Into Fourth Place With 1-0 Win Over Nashville SC
– NCFC has now recorded wins against teams placed first (Tampa Bay Rowdies), second (New York Red Bulls II) and fourth (Nashville SC) in the Eastern Conference standings this season.
Indy Eleven draw Louisville, remain unbeaten at home
Lucas Oil Stadium remained a fortress for the Indy Eleven, as it played to a 1-1 draw Saturday against Louisville City FC.
The Eleven opened the game's scoring with Tyler Pasher's goal in the ninth minute. It was Pasher's fifth goal in the month, a league-best, and his seventh goal overall.
Louisville City FC equalized 10 minutes after the start of the second half on a Paolo DelPiccolo set piece.
The Eleven are undefeated at home over the last 17 games, winning 10 games and drawing seven. They also hold a 10-game undefeated streak overall and sit in second place in the USL Championship's Eastern Conference with 34 points. They are two points back of the Tampa Bay Rowdies for the top spot.
Fury FC undefeated streak ends with added-time loss against Rowdies

Ottawa Fury FC’s undefeated streak ended at 10 games on Saturday night, snapped by a 2-1 added-time defeat against the Tampa Bay Rowdies in Florida.
Sebastian Guenzatti’s goal in the second minute of additional time made the difference as the Rowdies improved their United Soccer League Championship record to 10-1-7. Fury FC dropped to 7-3-7, but remained sixth in the league standings.
Christiano François opened the scoring for Ottawa in the 22nd minute, but Juan Tejada provided the equalizer for Tampa Bay in the 36th.
Fury FC hadn’t lost in USL play since April 20 against Louisville FC.
Its next regular-season game is in New York against the Red Bulls II on July 5.

USL Review: Rowdies make moves; league eyes Baltimore expansion
The Tampa Bay Rowdies traded away a pair of players and got one that its familiar with in return. Also, reports say the USL is “strongly considering bringing a franchise to Baltimore.”

Rays’ Split-Season Propoal Raises Questions for Rowdies Fans (OC)
I'm going to save most of my comments for tomorrow night's show, but I'll just say this - we don't have to be at Al Lang forever, but if we're moving, it needs to be an upgrade, and it needs to be built with soccer in mind, not "how can we squeeze soccer into a baseball setting"
This is brilliantly said. Al Lang is amazing right now...any shift in that should only be for the better.

So I finished listening to the press conference.
It is rather galling to hear someone at the press conference refer to local baseball fans as being "selfish" for wanting to have a MLB team "all to themselves", which is insulting and absurd and makes me want to [redacted] the person who said that.
The only selfish people here are billionaires who expect taxpayers to pay for their stadiums arguing "civic pride" when it is convenient for them, on the one hand, and then turning around and saying "but we can do whatever we want because this is a private business" on the other hand, when THAT is convenient for them.
I also find it amusing how the Rays/Sternberg's Narrative keeps changing.
With the Ybor City stadium they weren't going to use ETFE because growing grass (IN FLORIDA!!!) would be too expensive, so they were going to use a different kind of clear plastic roof, and artificial turf.
But now that they are pitching a split-city, two-stadium proposal, suddenly roofless stadiums with natural grass are a must-have!
They will literally say whatever is convenient for them in the moment and don't expect anyone to call them out on it.
This is why I don't believe Sternberg's absolute declaration that this proposal is neither 1.) a first step to moving the team to Montreal, nor 2.) a negotiating ploy to get a new TBA stadium deal one.
When they tell you it isn't 1.) or 2.), it almost certainly IS either 1.) or 2.) or both, because the chances of BOTH city's governments, and BOTH city's tax payers, and MLB, and the players union, all agreeing to this deal seems to me to be astronomically unlikely (but what do I know, I'm not even a baseball fan).
Also I've read Mike Pendleton's and Jake Nutting's linked article, and agree in general with it.
The biggest concerns for me are the continued uncertainty that this places the Rowdies long term future in.
I don't think it is likely that the Rays will move to the Al Lang site, given the difficulties they experienced last time - they would need voter approval, and this latest stunt that the Rays have pulled is (I believe) burning a lot of bridges in the TBA for them, and ruining whatever goodwill they have left with St. Pete voters, not to mention that the Al Lang site is too small and would need to be expanded into the harbor - all very expensive and time consuming, and the Rays are pitching this half-season stadium as being a cheaper and quicker option.
I don't like the idea of sharing a facility with the Rays, either. Even with only half a MLB season, there would be scheduling conflicts, and making the field suitable for soccer would not be easy. To make it work would actually require the Rays spending a lot more on a properly designed multi-sport facility, and I just don't see them spending that kind of extra money, if they are really serious with what they claim their plans are.
Basically I don't believe anything I'm hearing from the Rays right now about this proposal, but time will tell whether I am right or not.
I just want this fiasco to be over with, and quickly, no matter what happens, so we can get a better idea of the Rowdies long term situation.
Rays’ Split-Season Proposal Raises Questions For Rowdies Fans
What do we know? Well, not much…or at least not what we most want to know.
With the Rays/Montreal press conference now in the rear-view mirror, more questions were raised than were answered.
Loosely we know this much: Rays and Rowdies Owners Stuart Sternberg and company believe 81 home games of baseball is unsustainable here. They don’t see much optimism in a full season future in St. Petersburg or even across the bridge in Tampa. They see a split season with Montreal as the only way to keep regular season baseball here in the Bay area to some degree. And there are a lot of details they haven’t quite worked out.
The Rowdies weren’t specifically named by any of the Rays brass in Tuesday’s press conference, but there were some bits of information directly from Sternberg himself in this potential framework that would certainly impact the Rowdies’ future.
According to Sternberg, there is no path forward for full-season MLB in Tampa Bay. A hypothetical split season would start here in Spring and last for 35 games with June to October being played entirely in Montreal.
Sternberg stated early into the Q&A portion of the press conference that their preferred direction is a new 30,000 seat outdoor stadium (no dome) that would host both baseball and soccer, optimally opening in 2024.
When asked about the idea of a refurbished or expanded Al Lang stadium being a part of this split-season proposal, Sternberg said it is an “absolute possibility,” as is a new stadium on the Tropicana Field site or elsewhere in Tampa Bay (Again, it seems as if they’ve barely started to dig into many of the details of this project.)
This obviously leaves Rowdies fans with a lot to wonder. Could the Rowdies possibly leave Downtown St. Petersburg? What would a multi-purpose baseball/soccer stadium look like? How would the sightlines be? Will we have to go back to playing on a sodded over pitch? Is that 30,000 capacity is just for USL Championship play? Have they even begun to start the legwork of reigniting the failed MLS2StPete bid?
To that first question on the Rowdies possibly leaving Downtown St. Pete. Bill Edwards’ parting gift to fans on his way out was the provision in the sale that the Rays commit to keeping the Rowdies in St Pete at Al Lang for five years even thought the club’s use agreement to manage the city-owned venue is set to expire at the end of 2020. (Rays President and Rowdies Vice-Chairman Brian Auld told The Unused Substitutes in a recent interview that they plan on renewing the agreement in the near future.) That would mean they’re obligated to keep the club where it is through the 2023 season. Of course, Sternberg did mention their aim to have their new shared stadium up and running in 2024. Read into that what you will.
Let’s try to look a little on the brighter side of the situation. While all of this is an understandably tough pill to swallow for Rays faithful, it might not all be worst case scenario for the Rowdies.
The Rays moving from an 81 game home schedule to a 35 game home schedule would open up a ton of inventory for the Rowdies. There would only be a slight overlap of seasons from April to May, before the Rays head up north. Provided ownership hasn’t burned bridges along the way, soccer and baseball could occupy the stadium for a majority of the year and complement each other instead of competing with each other for dates and the wallets of fans.
From a stadium perspective, if the Rowdies are going to continue to grow, something was going to have to give when it came to Al Lang anyway. The Rowdies have less capacity than every single team in front of them in the USL Championship attendance rankings (except Phoenix). There is only one suite to sell to any corporate entities looking to attend. Even in minor-league sports, suites are a huge driver for local sponsorships. A brand new multi-purpose stadium (with a reported price tag of $500M-$600M) would surpass the cost of all soccer-centric venues built here in the US to date, but comes with a lot of complications. On the plus side, new additions like a standing supporters section or canopies could be built, and perhaps smart engineering could remedy sightlines for both sports.
The pitch itself would present the biggest challenge, one that makes most bristle at the mere suggestion. Louisville City is currently constructing a new stadium to get out of its current baseball venue. Las Vegas Lights FC is already looking to get out of its former baseball stadium, even after retrofitting it to be more soccer friendly. There are a litany of examples of baseball and soccer struggling to coexist in the same venue. You’d be hard-pressed to think of a situation where it works in a sustainable way, and no one wants to be stuck in a NYCFC/Yankee stadium situation longterm. If Sternberg and his staff truly believe it can work, they need to make the case that they’ve thought it through and why it would be a positive for Rowdies fans, who have come to think of Al Lang as their home after the significant overhaul in the Edwards era.
After today’s press conference, we still know too little to be outright concerned, but we have just enough to be anxious. None of this would signal an end to the Rowdies. By most accounts the ownership transition to this point has been more good than bad. The speculation that the Rays purchased the Rowdies just to get a second bite at Al Lang was rampant when the sale was announced, but just about every move since then has indicated the Rays view the Rowdies as their own valuable asset, with their own unique potential. Today, though, the Rowdies and their fans have been thrown straight into this Rays quagmire. More than anything it’s just a profound bummer after years of progress and steady growth to be mired in someone else’s drama.
It doesn’t help that no one seemed overly concerned about what it all means for Rowdies fans today. With a host of new stadium possibilities, and the suggestion of a shared stadium confirmed as a possiblity, potential local moves in the conversation, and not a whisper of the team’s name at the podium today, Rowdies fans would sleep a whole lot better if we knew someone was thinking about our future.
Whatever happens in the long term will impact up in some way. If the Rays were to leave or split with Montreal that would have an impact. If a new stadium is built in Tampa, that could have an impact. If there is a multi-purpose stadium proposed (and it came to fruition) that would definitely have an impact.
At any rate, this presser isn't about us, but it could be about us, so here's a place to vent, freak out, or say whatever you want...

Haven't watched the stream yet, but based on what is reported, I have a hard time believing that Sternberg or MLB thinks this is a real possibility. No one is going to pay for a new stadium that will only host half of the MLB home games and share with another city, nor are two cities going to both agree to this. This is either a foot out the door prior to moving to Montreal, or a negotiating tactic towards getting a new stadium in the TBA. Either way it means more uncertainty which doesn't help the Rowdies.
Best case scenario: Rays move to Hillsborough and Rowdies get magnificent MLS type facility at old Trop site. Worst case scenario: Stu screws Rays and Rowdies fans by messing up Al Lang and they Rays end up in Montreal.

MLB Expansion: Examining 6 Possible Locations To Add Teams
If you squint hard enough and look out over the horizon, somewhere out there you’ll see Major League Baseball with 32 teams.
The league, which last expanded in 1998, has some tidying up to do, but for Commissioner Rob Manfred, he envisions a team in the Pacific and Eastern time zones. “Baseball is a growth industry,” Manfred said. “Eventually, we’d like to get to 32 teams.”
There are some good reasons for Manfred’s view on growth. MLB now sees gross revenues in excess of $10 billion, and with two new clubs the owners would likely garner $2 billion or more in expansion fees, not to mention new media rights revenues. With expansion would come regional realignment, and by then the universal DH would either be added or already implemented, given the union’s desire to bring the designated hitter to the National League.
As noted, baseball has some tidying up to do. For going on two decades, MLB has wanted the Oakland Athletics and Tampa Bay Rays to wrap up new ballparks, where the expectation is attendance and revenues would increase. And while the specter of relocation is always hanging over the two franchises, Manfred has made it clear to me and others that the focus is on keeping the A’s and Rays in their markets. Until then, expansion is on the league’s mind, but not at the forefront. “While we encourage markets to look into positioning themselves for the possible opportunity to host an MLB club, we aren’t discussing expansion at this time,” Manfred said.
Still, the conversation continues to percolate. In July 2018, Manfred said on FS1’s First Things First, “Portland, Las Vegas, Charlotte, Nashville in the United States, certainly Montreal, maybe Vancouver, in Canada” could be potential expansion markets. “We think there’s places in Mexico we could go over the long haul.”
While the MLB Players Association could nix Mexico over travel concerns in the near term, it’s worth looking at the other markets to see where they are at in terms of making a run at expansion. In doing so, we’ll look at some metrics MLB has used in the past, namely when the Montreal Expos were up for relocation.
Those metrics are the combined statistical area (CSA) population that looks at not just the market but its surrounding cities; the designated market area (DMA), which Nielsen uses to measure the television universe in the market; some top businesses that could factor for sponsorships, suite sales, or blocks of season tickets; what major professional sports teams are already in the market, which can dilute everything from attendance to sponsorships; what other MLB team or teams claim that market as part of their broadcast territory, or would be impacted by the size of an expansion club that radiates out, and finally; does the market have one or more individuals leading the charge to bring MLB to their market?
Some aspects to note: Nielsen DMA does not measure Canada so the projected television household projections are unavailable. For population ranking, Montreal and Vancouver have been compared with the 2017 U.S. Census estimate CSA ranking.
Also, while every market examined has at least one current MLB club that claims it as part of their broadcast territory, Manfred has made it clear that unlike what occurred in 2005 with the Expos’ relocation to Washington, D.C., and the creation of regional sports network MASN to indemnify the Baltimore Orioles over TV territory encroachment, such action will not take place with expansion.
“We will follow the (MLB) Constitution And By-Laws, which has nothing regarding broadcast territories within it,” Manfred said. “The owners will vote based on that.”
Still, it’s clear that how an expansion market chews up broadcast territory could affect how owners vote. For any market to be approved it requires 75 percent of the league’s owners to vote in favor.

During today's press conference, Stuart Sternberg answered a reporter's question regarding the potential use of Al Lang Stadium as a possible location for a new 25,000 seat open air stadium. As Tampa Bay Rowdies supporters groups, we strongly reject this proposed change. We invest our time, money and effort into supporting the Rowdies and we seem to be an afterthought in this whole matter. The Rowdies brand has been around since the fall of 1974 and was the first professional sports team in the bay area. The new ownership group took over only a few months ago and now we find ourselves inserted into this quagmire unwillingly. We believe that the community is with us and the proof is in the overwhelming support the Tampa Bay Rowdies received during the last voter referendum (87% approval in 2018). It was a statement about what the citizens of St. Petersburg feel is in the best interest of the city. History also shows us that in 2008, a previous proposal to build a 30,000 seat open-air baseball stadium at the Al Lang site failed. We reject the concept of a shared venue based on the incompatibility of field size and seating compromises that must be taken to accomodate both.
The Tampa Bay Rowdies are currently in first place in the USL Championship and have seen attendance growth for 6 of the past 8 seasons. The growth of soccer in the US is on the climb and we feel that re-purposing Al Lang Stadium would do a great disservice to the citizens of St. Petersburg and fans of the Tampa Bay Rowdies around the region.

RE: Tampa Bay Rays stadium search
During today's press conference, Stuart Sternberg answered a reporter's question regarding the potential use of Al Lang Stadium as a possible location for a new 25,000 seat open air stadium. As Tampa Bay Rowdies supporters groups, we strongly reject this proposed change. We invest our time, money and effort into supporting the Rowdies and we seem to be an afterthought in this whole matter. The Rowdies brand has been around since the fall of 1974 and was the first professional sports team in the bay area. The new ownership group took over only a few months ago and now we find ourselves inserted into this quagmire unwillingly. We believe that the community is with us and the proof is in the overwhelming support the Tampa Bay Rowdies received during the last voter referendum (87% approval in 2018). It was a statement about what the citizens of St. Petersburg feel is in the best interest of the city. History also shows us that in 2008, a previous proposal to build a 30,000 seat open-air baseball stadium at the Al Lang site failed. We reject the concept of a shared venue based on the incompatibility of field size and seating compromises that must be taken to accomodate both.
The Tampa Bay Rowdies are currently in first place in the USL Championship and have seen attendance growth for 6 of the past 8 seasons. The growth of soccer in the US is on the climb and we feel that re-purposing Al Lang Stadium would do a great disservice to the citizens of St. Petersburg and fans of the Tampa Bay Rowdies around the region.
