Rowdies Home Attendance Thread - Game 9 vs. Charleston Battery [6/15]

Attendance Thread

Game 9 is in the books...just a hair over 5k for this one. I'm not sure that the Doubleheader has a massive impact, but the $5 dollar Rays tickets could have capitalized on people's entertainment options (they had great attendance this weekend). The threat of rain could have had a slowing impact on sales, as well. It's not too far off from the types of numbers we were seeing in the middle of last season, though.

Next one up is in two weeks for Pride Night and early signs look like this will be a good one for us. It's an 8PM start (this one was apparently moved, as well), and I'm not 100% sure why. Perhaps because of the Rays? They have a 4:10PM start, so in theory you could doubleheader that one, too...

Datz cuts the ribbon on its new St. Pete restaurant [Video]

Roger and Suzanne Perry (center) cut the ribbon for Datz in downtown St. Petersburg.
Datz, an iconic south Tampa restaurant, has opened its first location in St. Petersburg.

Business and community leaders joined Suzanne and Roger Perry, co-founders and owners of the Datz Restaurant Group, in cutting the ribbon on the new restaurant, at 180 Central Ave., Monday morning.

Like its counterpart in south Tampa, the St. Pete Datz features what’s been described as edgy and inventive comfort food that plays well on Instagram and other social media.

“When I became mayor, one of my dreams quite frankly was to have Datz in this city because I had eaten there in Tampa and I was envious, I’ll admit it,” said Mayor Rick Kriseman. “This restaurant, the vibe, the food, everything fits with St. Petersburg.”

The 250-seat restaurant is on the ground level in the same building that houses the James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art. There are 90 employees on the payroll of the new location.

There are about 400 employees at the Perry’s Datz Restaurant Group, which also includes Dr. BBQ in St. Pete’s EDGE District; Roux, a southern Creole concept; and Dough, a bakery. The group also operates The Canyon, the café inside the James Museum.

Datz St. Petersburg been quietly open for about three or four days, but the Monday morning grand opening was the first chance most people had to stop in.

Chris Steinocher, president and CEO of the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce, said the Datz ribbon-cutting, like many others, was about celebrating entrepreneurship.

“It’s usually not just one entrepreneur, but a family, and this one is very much the same thing — a husband and wife who brought their own ideas and thoughts about what they want to do. They tried to retire and failed retirement completely, thankfully, but brought something pretty special to us,” Steinocher said. “When we see ribbon-cuttings we see the notion of a family bringing something better than was here before, always trying to make something newer and different, using their own creativity, their own art. This is an arts town, but we feel like food is art too, and you guys have brought some of the most beautiful and tasty art our way.”

Harvard Jolly was the architect and designer, and Boyd Construction Co. was the contractor on the project. John Witner at KW Realty helped secure the locations for Datz and Dr. BBQ, and Fifth Third Bank financed the Datz project.

‘The A-League needs more love’: Decision day looms for Australian professional soccer

With the clock winding down on the FFA and the A-League teams in their bid to reform Australian club soccer, SportsPro editor Michael Long marks out the lines on the commercial battleground.

Australia’s A-League is an adolescent in world soccer. Conceived just 14 years ago, it is a comparative youngster in the professional soccer family, a spotty teenager that has undoubtedly matured but which has yet to truly come of age.

Heading into its 15th year, the future of Australia’s elite club competition remains shrouded in uncertainty. Executives at Football Federation Australia (FFA), the organisers of the competition since its inception, are locked in talks with the league’s ten clubs and a host of other stakeholders in the game to determine a new operating model that is set to have far-reaching implications for professional soccer in the Oceanic nation.

With the clock ticking towards an end-of-June deadline for a decision to be made, SportsPro assesses the current situation and runs the rule over some of the options on the table.

How did it come to this?

As it stands, Australia’s professional leagues - including the men’s A-League, the women’s W-League, and the Y-League national youth competition - are owned and operated by the FFA, which grants franchise operating licenses for each competition and distributes central revenues according to its own formula. But the federation’s leadership knows change is required if the downward trends it is seeing in several key performance metrics are to be reversed.

Next year, the A-League will expand to 11 teams with the addition of Melbourne-based Western United. Macarthur FC, located in Western Sydney, will follow suit in 2020, while reports suggest the league could look to expand further, possibly up to 16 teams, in the coming years. Meanwhile the creation of a second division is also being explored, with a European-style system potentially incorporating promotion and relegation.

Major League Soccer’s Office Condos Score $43M Refi

JLL Capital Markets has arranged a $43-million loan on behalf of Witkoff Group to refinance two office condominiums totaling 64,211 square foot and serving as the New York headquarters of Major League Soccer (MLS). Deutsche Bank was the lender on the transaction.

A JLL team of Aaron Appel, Keith Kurland, Jonathan Schwartz, Adam Schwartz, Jackson Sastri and Michael Ianno negotiated the financing. “Witkoff has extensive knowledge of the office condominium market and has been involved in many notable acquisitions and projects in Midtown and throughout Manhattan,” said Appel.

Built in 1990, 420 Fifth is a 28-story, 605,515-square-foot office condominium occupying the entire block between West 37th and West 38th streets. Its 45 condo units are occupied by the Rockefeller Foundation, Marist College and Italian eyewear company Luxottica, among others.

MLS first took occupancy at 420 Fifth in May 2005, and has steadily renewed and expanded within the property.

Copa the lot!

Graham from Redcar bagged almost £5,000 on a £10 seven-fold which began in fairly straightforward fashion at the Copa America and concluded with victory for Chicago FC United, who evidently are a real team.

Redcar's leading overseas football expert correctly predicted that Colombia would shock Argentina, before demonstrating the full breadth of his knowledge with one draw, a win for Sampaio Correa FC and various other correct predictions on games the less shrewd among us would've assumed you can't even bet on.

The draw came between Tampa Bay Rowdies, whose reputation precedes them, and Charleston Battery, who showed their own Duracell-like qualities with an 88th-minute leveller. Bosch!

(Deputy) editor's note: Bosch, the German industrial company, also make batteries albeit without having managed to become metaphors for sexual longevity - that's why I wrote 'Bosch!' and not 'bosh!'
