NCFC's Malik will announce $1.9B plan for multi-use soccer complex next week

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina Football Club's multi-year drive to build a multi-use soccer facility in hopes of landing a Major League Soccer expansion franchise will get a boost next Tuesday morning when the club unveils plans for a 20,000 seat stadium in downtown Raleigh.

Steve Malik, the owner and chairman of the NCFC, told WRAL TechWire that he is partnering with Raleigh developer John Kane for a project that Malik said will cost $1.9 billion.

The stadium will be the hub of a sports/entertainment and mixed use development, Malik said.

Full details of the project, including the specific location, renderings and other information will be disclosed at Tuesday's announcement, Malik said.

North Carolina FC to unveil $1.9bn stadium complex as part of MLS bid

North Carolina FC will step up its aggressive bid to land a Major League Soccer expansion spot next week by unveiling plans for a new $1.9bn stadium complex in downtown Raleigh.

Steve Malik, owner and chairman of the United Soccer League Championship team, is partnering with local developer John Kane to build a 20,000-seat multipurpose stadium and accompanying mixed-use development facility.

Full details will be unveiled at a press conference on June 25.

“Having an urban stadium with great highway access and with entertainment options surrounding it will strengthen our bid,” Malik told WRAL TechWire.

In April, MLS unveiled plans to boost its long-term expansion target from a prior goal of 28 teams to 30. It is widely assumed that Sacramento and St Louis will gain the next two expansion places, paying an increased entry fee of $200m, to join confirmed forthcoming league entries of Miami, Nashville, and Austin in the next two years.

This would leave just one spot open as things stand, with North Carolina FC competing with the likes of Phoenix, Las Vegas, Detroit and Charlotte. The timetable of entry and expansion fee for the 30th team are yet to be determined.

North Carolina FC and sister team North Carolina Courage of the National Women’s Soccer League currently play at the 10,000-seater WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.

North Carolina FC and Kane Realty set to reveal plans for new downtown sports complex

North Carolina FC owner discusses new Southeast Raleigh stadium proposal

Steve Malik, owner of the soccer team North Carolina FC, and developer John Kane say they have a new site in downtown Southeast Raleigh for a soccer stadium, that aims to eventually land a franchise in Major League Soccer.

RALEIGH

North Carolina Football Club and N.C. Courage owner Steve Malik will join with Raleigh developer John Kane next Tuesday to reveal their plans for a sports and entertainment complex south of downtown Raleigh.

Malik and Kane have long sought to put a stadium in downtown Raleigh, and previously the two had identified state-owned land on the corner of Salisbury and Peace streets.

But, earlier this year, the group moved on to a new part of town for the potential stadium — this time along the South Saunders Street corridor, The News & Observer previously reported.

Inter Miami CF denies owner David Beckham has sold ownership stake to Jorge, José Mas

Inter Miami CF co-owners Jorge Mas, left, and David Beckham appear at a press conference called Thursday. Via CBS4.

AS USA reported Tuesday afternoon that Inter Miami CF owner David Beckham sold his stake in the club to partners Jorge and José Mas, agreeing to remain a “global face” for the club. Club representatives and the City of Miami went into overdrive to categorically deny the report.

Cristian Rivas, writing for AS and based out of Mexico City, indicated that the reported-on agreement would have no tangible impact on the operation of the club. However, the club and the city that the club will eventually call home pushed back on the assessment..

“Mr. Rivas. Please remove this from your cover and twitter account. It’s totally untrue. Thank you,” Rene Pedrosa tweeted. Pedrosa is the communications director for City of Miami mayor Francis Suarez.

“There is no truth to this report. David is a proud owner of the team,” a club representative told WPLG-10 ABC sports director Will Manso.

David Beckham has been a vital part of the Miami MLS project since its inception in 2014. As part of his agreement to come to Major League Soccer in 2007, Beckham was given the right to form an expansion club for the price of $25 million. With expansion fees now exceeding $200 million, Beckham is likely to see a significant return on investment if and when he does decide to sell.

Inter Miami refutes report claiming Beckham selling MLS club shares

After all the delays, obstacles, and promise, David Beckham may not wind up overseeing a minute of Inter Miami CF.

Yes, really.

A report from Cristian Rivas of AS says the Manchester United legend is selling his shares of his expansion club, which is set to begin play in 2020 (from US.AS.com).

Beckham’s MLS contract allowed him the option of starting a club at the end of his playing career, and he opted for South Beach.

But the English midfielder watched as stadium sites, lawsuits, and myriad issues got in the way of his project, which led to questions of “Will this ever happen?” and multiple public announcements.

It wasn’t all negative, as speculators salivated over the megastars expected to play for “Beckham United.”

According to the report, current IMCF partners Jorge and Jose Mas Santos will purchase Beckham’s shares. Nutty. If true, this report would be a face palm for the executives of Major League Soccer, who backed Becks at every turn (though maybe they knew, too).

And if it happens, maybe this was always Beckham’s plan. It would’ve been foolish for the entrepreneur to turn down the rights to his own team, and staying behind the brand this long certainly aided in the group’s growth.

But how will players and fans react in a market which has certainly had its problems growing, and has been rivaled by a number of upstart teams?

Perhaps it’s all foolhardly speculation, and a reporter was given bad information. Let’s hope so, for the good of Miami having a successful team.

Making use of its legitimate right of reply, Inter Miami FC requests the publication of the following statement:

3 Reasons Why Freddy Adu Must Be Included In The USMNT 2020 Olympic Squad

ONE OF THE THREE OVERAGE SPOTS SHOULD GO TO THE 30-YEAR-OLD, AND THAT’S DAMN-SKIPPY.

For the last decade, Freddy Adu has been quixotically rediscovering his love for the game and declaring himself a much more learned and focused footballer. The problem is, over the course of the last five years, he’s only played 34 professional games, basically the same amount that Harry Kane plays in a week.

But he was learning to love the game again with Aris; he was retooling with the Tampa Bay Rowdies; he was just one of the guys with the Las Vegas Lights; he’s taking it back to the grassroots level with a U-14 team in Baltimore. Once he gets his mind right, so the story goes ad infinitum, he’ll be sucking down that Sierra Mist alongside Pelé once again.

What about not only watching, but entirely enjoying a U-20 World Cup? That curled free kick against Guatemala for his first USMNT goal?? That two-year omission from the side before gloriously returning and heavily influencing the 2011 Gold Cup?! That ridiculous assist for the Tampa Bay Rowdies four years ago?!?!

3 Reasons Why Freddy Adu Should Play At The 2020 Olympics

#1. It’ll make people give a shit.

#2. He’ll be a mentor like Michael Bradley but people will actually respect him.

#3. He’s the ultimate 85th-minute super sub.

Story Stuart of Story Brooke Café Kicks Off New Venture Next to St. Pete Brewing Co.

We spoke to Story on the phone last night as she took a break from painting the walls of her new venture.

Coming in July, the heart of the Central Arts District will soon have a brand new craft coffee bar and dessert lounge—Beans & Barlour. (Bar / Parlour - Get it? Alcohol-infused ice cream - Yay!)

The new restaurant concept will be located at 538 1st Ave North directly next door to St Pete Brewing Company. With a grand opening planned for early July, Beans & Barlour will kick off the rapid development of 1st Ave’s 500 block with other new establishments such as Inoculum Ale Works expected to open later this summer.

Beans & Barlour will introduce alcohol infused ice cream to the Tampa Bay area with signature house-made flavors crafted after classic desserts and cocktails such as tiramisu with amaretto mascarpone ice cream layered with warm espresso soaked ladyfingers or an Irish Car Bomb float featuring St Pete Brewing Company’s Imperial Stout poured over a whiskey and Irish cream infused ice cream.

Patrons of Stuart’s previous establishment, Story Brooke Craft Coffee Bar, will find many of their favorite signature creations on the new menu such as the crème brûlée cappuccino and a fresh new twist on her infamous waffles.

Beans & Barlour will be open from 7:30am to 10pm on weeknights and 8:30am to 12am on weekends. In addition to inventive coffees and desserts, the food menu will reflect on a partnership with St Pete Brewing Company to include a variety of shareable dishes such as a beer cheese fondue and other small plates.

To stay up to date on future news and announcements related to Beans & Barlour, they can be found on Facebook and Instagram. Watch this space for more info on menu items coming soon.
