St. Pete mayor suggests timetable for Trop site decision

Mayor Rick Kriseman is likely to pull the trigger on a specific redevelopment plan for Tropicana Field in about a year.

The mayor expects to know by then whether the Trop site will be redeveloped with a baseball stadium or without one.

He’s not only waiting for a signal from the Tampa Bay Rays, who play their home games at the Trop, but also keeping a close eye on the economy.

“I believe at some point in the next couple of years, the market will slow down. I don’t think we’ll see a recession like we just went through, but we want to catch this as the rise is still happening. We don’t want try to catch it on the downside of the wave,” Kriseman said Wednesday, at the quarterly leadership lunch for the St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership.

“Look for something to happen sometime in the next year or so, one way or the other,” he said.

Plans have been in flux for about six months, since the Rays scrapped a plan for a stadium in Ybor City.  At that time, Kriseman said Trop site redevelopment plans would move forward whether or not the Rays wanted to keep playing at the location.

That’s still true, he told the Downtown Partnership.

“We’re got 86 acres — or 70 if the stadium is still there — that we want to redevelop. We think it’s an incredible opportunity to redevelop. We’ve done a master plan with a stadium and without a stadium on it. We’re looking for a little bit of heads up from the team as to whether we should be talking to a potential master developer about redeveloping it with a stadium or without the stadium, but we want to get moving on it soon,” he said.

He said he continues to have discussions with Rays owner Stu Sternberg and presidents Matt Silverman and Brian Auld about the future of the franchise.

“I’ve tried to make it clear to those guys that St. Petersburg is ready to be a partner. We still believe that this is the best city and that is the best location long-term for the team,” Kriseman said.

While attendance and corporate support for the team haven’t been as strong as they should have been historically, Kriseman said there’s lots of reasons to be positive about the future.

“Between the growth that’s happening in St. Pete and in Tampa, between the transportation changes that are on the books and being planned right now, from the Howard Frankland to the Gandy interchange, from premium transit from Wesley Chapel to high-speed rail from Orlando to downtown Tampa – and the Ferry – some of the impediments that have made it difficult for people to get over I think are going to go away, and that’s why I’m bullish and optimistic about the future of the franchise here in St. Pete,” Kriseman said.

Both scenarios for redevelopment include significant office space, a major focus for the city, because it wants to have enough places for existing and new businesses. Land and construction costs have limited office development in recent years, although falling vacancy rates and rising rents are starting to make office construction look more feasible, developers have said.

United Insurance Holding Corp. (Nasdaq: UIHC), which is building a new headquarters downtown, will add some office space, along with parking, and most of the development plans submitted for the old St. Petersburg Police headquarters building have some office component as well.

The Downtown Partnership is doing its own work on creating more office space downtown, said Jason Mathis, CEO.

“We’re working on a major research project right now that we think will lay the groundwork and build the case for private sector investment in office space,” Mathis said. The city’s economic development team, along with officials from Pinellas County and University of South Florida St. Petersburg, are working with private sector leaders on the research project, which Mathis hopes to complete in September.

MLS’s 30th franchise. The MLS decided in 2017 to increase the size of the league from 24 teams to 28 franchises. Despite having problems finding cities, the league added Austin, Cincinnati and Nashville. The league then decided that it didn’t have to stop at 28 teams, why not add two more? There is a thought that Sacramento and St. Louis will get the 28th and 29th teams.  But the question for MLS Commissioner Don Garber is why the sudden interest in Las Vegas when there is not much suggesting that a new stadium is in the future other than a six month negotiating window between possible owners and the city for land usage that could include a stadium.

The MLS also has Indianapolis in the mix for that sixth franchise. The Indy 11 soccer franchise currently is a member of the second tier United Soccer League but ownership has a desire to move up to the Major League Soccer level. The franchise ownership applied to join the MLS during the league’s hunt to add four teams but was passed over. But now there is a commitment by Indiana legislators to put $112 million into a new soccer facility, the Indianapolis bid has been strengthened. Investors in Las Vegas, Detroit, Indianapolis, Phoenix and Charlotte are pursuing an MLS franchise. The MLS is not making much money yet but investors want to join the lodge.

A South Florida county has said no to soccer legend David Beckham.

Beckham’s fledgling soccer franchise Inter Miami CF is in the market for more space in addition to its plans to replace Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale for one of its teams and to build a stadium in Miami for a second team.

Broward commissioners rebuffed a last-minute attempt by the franchise to land a contract for the county’s Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill. The park has a cricket stadium that can double as a soccer venue and also has practice fields.

Club officials said their most pressing need is a site for its 150-member youth academy, which is supposed to start training in August and start playing games in September. The academy has six groupings, from under-12 to age 19. The franchise could also use extra room for its two professional teams until the Fort Lauderdale and Miami complexes are completed.

Beckham is bringing a Major League Soccer team to South Florida starting next year, along with a United Soccer League, League One team that will act as a farm club for the MLS team. The United team’s home will be at the new Lockhart Stadium, but the MLS team will also need to play there until the Miami stadium is built.

The organization offered to have 20 United games a year at the Lauderhill park in the first two years of a contract, while its MLS team is using the Lockhart site, then to hold eight United games and four MLS pre-season games at the park in future years, when the Miami stadium is done.

Except for Vice Mayor Dale Holness, Broward commissioners Tuesday didn’t even want to consider the proposal.

They chose instead to sign an agreement with the group recommended by county staff after a lengthy and open selection process: US Champions Soccer Academy (PSG Academy Florida), which is affiliated with FC Miami City, a United Soccer League, League Two team.

U.S. Champions will pay the county at least $1.085 million over the initial five-year contract, plus a portion of its concession revenues. It will also make $936,500 in improvements, including two lighted synthetic turf soccer fields, by 2025. The group’s sporting director is Wagneau Eloi, the former head coach of the Haitian national team and a professional player in France.

Vice Mayor Dale Holness said he wasn’t trying to have Inter Miami selected over US Champions, which runs its own academy.

The US Champions academy is fee-based, while the Inter Miami academy does not charge, he said. It is run in conjunction with the MLS and academy members are selected through try-outs.

“I think that both entities could co-exist at the park,” Holness said.

They still might.

The US Champions contract says the county has the right for two years “to schedule and book soccer games in the stadium and practice sessions on fields 3 and 4 that involve the USL team affiliated with the Inter Miami Major League Soccer team.”

Inter Miami said it doesn’t expect any delays in constructing the Lockhart Stadium replacement.

"With Lockhart scheduled to be completed in early 2020, we are currently having open conversations with many parks to serve as an interim facility for our academy, which begins training this August,” said Paul McDonough, Inter Miami’s sports director.

The new Lockhart may be able to handle both the United and MLS team schedules until a Miami stadium is built, but McDonough said it would be better to have an alternate site for the United games.

McDonough also anticipates interest from more MLS clubs to come to South Florida for pre-season training, which starts in January, so he said additional space would come in handy.

The US Champions soccer contract comes as the county tries to get more use out of its Lauderhill stadium and fields. A separate group has a contract to schedule cricket games and tournaments there.

Manchester United legend David Beckham has been on the lookout for a new striker for his MLS Miami franchise and according to the latest reports, he has shortlisted Serie A giants Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi for the role.

The Argentine international is reportedly going through a tough time at his current club due to a host of reasons. It was in February that Icardi’s wife and agent Wanda Nara made derogatory comments targeting Inter Milan’s management and that did not sit well with the club. It led to the star being dropped from the first team for nearly three months before the problem was resolved with Wanda apologising.

Icardi also had a fallout with former manager Luciano Spalletti, who then benched him for a few other games in the 2018-19 season.

As the data continues to build up and the trends become more apparent, here is by my list the Rowdies top three in terms of total value contributed to the team this season.

Fernandes (60)

Diakite (56)

Tinari (54)

No other players on the team are in the 40's while there are a couple in the 30's including Morad, Guenzatti, and Steinberger.

Poku has the highest average offensive value, given it's only been a couple games he's played in, but he's been really good with his passing and touches. Aside from Poku though, the top offensive value has been seen in Steinberger, Tinari, and Fernandes. Both Fernandes (+32 pass) and Tinari (+30 pass) post really high effective passing numbers. Guenzatti has the third highest positive in passing at +21.

Of Fernandes 60 total points, 42 have come in the second half which is one of the bigger half to half differences of anyone on the team. Morad has 22 of his 30 points coming in the first half.

Nice to hear Neal preach the truth. Now what to do about it.

Definitely saw an uptick with Tejada injected into the match. Still, others need to step up, take a shot or work it into the box and create opportunities through chaos. Fernandes is greatly missed.

One item of contention. I didn't hear Collins mention sloppiness. We gave the Battery several chances on goal through silly and sloppy passes to no one in particular. Giving them open looks at the goal. This easily could've been another loss.

Silly Question

Hey sorry if this is a silly question but Battery fan here and was listening to the ESPN+ broadcast of our match earlier tonight. First time I’ve listened to the Rowdies television guys, great job far better than ours! Where is Ryan Davis from? I swear I hear the Caribbean listening to his accent but I can’t find anything online about it. He’s a great color commentator! Thanks!

Went to my first Rowdies game today...

...and I loved it! I definitely want to go back. I did the Rays-Rowdies combo today and it was great. I kept tabs on you guys when you jabronis played in the NASL (RIP) but the NASL lived fast and died young. My Armada is now a U-20 team. PRFC evaporated and I don’t even know what the eff league the Cosmos play in. So I’m gonna follow you guys. How can I watch the games? Facebook live?
