‘It’s crazy’: ICC founder Stephen Ross, stymied in soccer business effort, doesn’t mince words for US Soccer, MLS

Stephen Ross is agitated.

The wealthy real estate industrialist – he’s behind the sprawling $25 billion Hudson Yards development in Manhattan – perhaps is best known as owner of the Miami Dolphins and as the University of Michigan alum who has given his school nearly $400 million.

Ross’ portfolio also includes a soccer business intended to capitalize on the global passion for the sport. His New York City-based Relevent Sports Group LLC has staged the International Champions Cup since 2013, a barnstorming preseason exhibition tournament of mainly European powerhouse teams playing in American stadiums (with a few matches in Europe and Asia).

Relevent’s primary goal is to make money by growing soccer in the United States. That’s where Ross’ irritation comes in. He’s eager to discuss soccer in the U.S., what it could become, but also is blunt about what he perceives as unfair and unwise resistance to his efforts by the American soccer...

USL power ratings: Aug. 5, 2019 [OC]

Tampa remains No. 1 in the East's projected table, and the huge margin of victory over the weekend brings them back to No. 2 in the all-USL power ratings.

The huge beatdown this weekend was great. Glad to get one on our rivals like that! Especially with a solid group of rowdies fans in attendance.

Man, it was so much fun up there. I went for a while without seeing the Rowdies win on the road...you'd drive a long way and come home disappointed. This is so much sweeter...

1. Tampa Bay Rowdies – 71.99 projected points
2. New York Red Bulls II – 66.77 points

6. By contrast, the Eastern Conference-leading Tampa Bay Rowdies had remarkably little trouble in dismissing the Charleston Battery in a club-record seventh road win of the season after Lucky Mkosana’s two goals in the opening four minutes paved the way to a 5-0 win that kept the side just ahead of the New York Red Bulls II after New York’s 2-0 win against Saint Louis FC on Friday night.

12. As impressive as the Eleven have been in finding ways to win games and stay in touch with the Rowdies and Red Bulls II at the top of the standings, on Saturday night it was the resilience of their defense that really stood out. NCFC piled on 15 shots in the second half, including an unstoppable finish by Dre Fortune that leveled the score midway through, but through it all Indy was resolute and kept itself in with a chance. And, as we’ve seen numerous times this year, it’s becoming awfully good at taking those opportunities when they present themselves.

Saving NASCAR's Soul, One Race Track At A Time

But, as I think I heard Dick Trickle once say, “Nothing is that easy, son.” There is a far bigger development project on tap for the Fairgrounds, and it is focused on a sport with a much bigger buzz and higher ceiling right now. That sport is soccer.

Nashville SC, an expansion club, will join Major League Soccer next year and plans to play its home games at Nissan Stadium, the stadium of the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, until a 30,000-seat soccer stadium is built at the fairgrounds -- right next to the old racetrack.

SMI executives say it is possible to rebuild the racetrack next to the soccer stadium, and condos and stores that go along with it. Just last week, Jerry Caldwell (no relation), the executive vice president of Bristol Motor Speedway, issued this statement:

It Looks As If The MLS Has A Nashville Problem

Back to court.

Does Major League Soccer have another Miami problem on its hands in Nashville? That is a question that may take a while to answer because the groundbreaking for a Nashville Major League Soccer stadium has been delayed by a lawsuit filed by a group named Save Our Fairgrounds. Flea market vendors don’t want to see a soccer stadium built on the fairgrounds and went to court with a number of points including what the group thinks is a violation of the Nashville City Charter’s prohibition on giving away public land to a private enterprise. Save Our Fairgrounds lost its initial round in court but appealed to the Nashville Board of Appeals which threw the case back to a lower court. Nashville was granted an expansion MLS franchise in 2017 after about a quarter of a billion dollars was found to help build the stadium and the city designated Fairgrounds land to be used to house the venue. The stadium construction was supposed to have begun by June 30,2019. Nashville has not knocked down any buildings where the stadium is scheduled to be located nor has it issued any bonds to pay for stadium construction. The Nashville Soccer Club is scheduled to begin play in 2020 and will use the Tennessee Titans NFL facility until the opening of the stadium at the Fairgrounds.

The MLS has seen expansion pains before in Miami. Major League Soccer granted David Beckham a Miami expansion franchise in 2014 but Beckham’s various ownership groups had difficulty finding a suitable spot for a stadium. It appears Beckham is finally getting a Miami stadium in 2022 and Beckham’s expansion team will finally make its debut in 2020 in Fort Lauderdale spending two seasons in the city north of Miami. The MLS has had trouble with expansion plans and now there is a Nashville problem.

D.C. United/Soccer

Promoter intends to drop sanctioning suit against USSF

A promoter intends to drop its lawsuit that asked a court to order the U.S. Soccer Federation to sanction international league matches in the United States.

The USSF in April denied an application by Relevent Sports, a company owned by Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, to have Ecuador’s Barcelona and Guayaquil clubs play on May 5 at Miami Gardens, Florida. The USSF cited an Oct. 26 announcement by FIFA that its ruling council “emphasized the sporting principle that official league matches must be played within the territory of the respective member association.”

Relevent sued in New York Supreme Court, and a lawyer for the USSF argued the court should not hear the dispute and it should be sent to arbitration. A decision by Justice W. Franc Perry was pending.

Marc Litt, a lawyer for Relevent, sent a letter to Perry on Monday stating “that our client has decided to discontinue this proceeding.”

Relevent also attempted to stage the first Spanish La Liga match in the U.S., between Barcelona and Girona, at Miami Gardens on Jan. 26. That effort fell through following opposition from the governing body of Spanish soccer, the Real Federacion Espanola de Futbol, and the players’ union, the Asociacion de Futbolistas Espanoles.

https://www.dispatch.com/sports/20190805/cincinnatis-crew-fans-feel-pull-from-fc-cincinnati

Cincinnati’s Crew fans feel pull from FC Cincinnati

Patrick Ward, a season-ticket holder for Crew games since the 1996 inaugural season, lives in Cincinnati. When FC Cincinnati came into existence, Ward, 55, felt obligated to stay strictly committed to the Crew, unlike others in the area.

“I’ve been there since the beginning and you get sort of a ‘I really want to see this through’ (feeling),” Ward said.

FC Cincinnati joined the United Soccer League in 2016 and was promoted to Major League Soccer beginning this season, giving the state its second club in the league. Ward is one of an estimated few hundred Crew fans in the Cincinnati area who had a choice to make about their allegiance when it became more convenient to go to FC Cincinnati games.

Some stayed with their original team or left for the shiny new toy, while most who were Crew fans before FC Cincinnati was founded now have dual allegiances. From whichever side these fans view Saturday’s first regular-season meeting of the Hell is Real rivalry, the proximity of another MLS club has had a major impact on the Crew’s ability to attract more fans from one of the state’s largest cities.

Savannah Kuchenmeister, 32, is one of the chief organizers for the Crew supporters’ group based in Cincinnati. She’s remained loyal to her original colors and never considered switching sides or liking both teams because of how much time she has put into her fandom, as well as the relationships she’s built during games at Mapfre Stadium.

Kuchenmeister has seen most people who started as Crew fans become fans of both teams for the convenience of having a team nearby. But she has also seen an increase in the number of people who come to events and watch parties.

“I would love to be able to drive 15 to 20 minutes to watch my team play, but I don’t have that luxury because I’m a Crew fan,” Kuchenmeister said. “Whether I’m for or against (FC Cincinnati), I like the attention for (the rivalry). It can only be positive.”

Mike Hudson, 37, lives about 4 miles from Cincinnati’s Nippert Stadium and has been a Crew fan since 2010 and a season-ticket holder since 2016. He has a 10-game plan for the Crew and full-season package for FC Cincinnati this season, but will be full-season ticket holder next year.

Listen to the Soccer Speakeasy podcast:

Getting in at the start of the organization with Cincinnati was appealing to him, while also maintaining his connection to history with the league’s first charter member. There’s certainly some pockets of vitriol within the derby, but the taunting often isn’t out of hatred for another club.

Hudson said there’s certainly a contingent that owns tickets to both teams, others who are hard-core FC Cincinnati fans and others who defend their Crew-only fandom because of precedent.

“I guess you can say it’s kind of split among the people that I know,” Hudson said.

Matt Long, 56, had been a Crew fan for five years before jumping ship for FC Cincinnati in 2016. He represents why a lot of fans either completely switch or buy tickets to both clubs. Once there was a team nearby, it just didn’t make sense for him to make the drive to Columbus and miss out on special events like a stadium reveal when he had another club close to home.

There’s also still a point of pride for Long and other FC Cincinnati fans who were vocal supporters of the Save The Crew movement. Former Crew investor/operator Anthony Precourt will have his Austin FC club in the league in 2021.

“I wish the Crew all the best 32 matches a year, and the other two matches I want to see us beat the tar out of them,” he said. “When we play Austin, I want us to destroy Austin because of what Precourt did to Columbus.”

Having a club in Cincinnati doesn’t necessarily mean fans like Ward can’t enjoy both clubs.

“Now that there’s a team near where I live, I can watch and follow that team,” Ward said. “But I get to be a part of a rivalry.”

GdS: Gattuso wanted as head coach by former Milan midfielder

According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Gattuso has already rejected an offer from Ligue 1 club Nantes who are looking to replace Vahid Halilhodzic.

Meanwhile, former Milan midfielder and England captain David Beckham reportedly the former Italy midfielder to manage his side Inter Miami in the Major League Soccer (MLS) next season.

Gattuso has a choice whether to accept that role or wait for something closer to home.

Zenga to Nantes, Gattuso to Miami?

As Nantes move for Walter Zenga after being rejected by Gennaro Gattuso, the former Milan boss could link back up with David Beckham at Inter Miami.

Gattuso was offered the role at Nantes, but Gazzetta dello Sport reports he passed up the opportunity.

The newspaper adds the French club are now in negotiations with Zenga, who is currently out of work after leaving Serie B side Venezia in March.

The ex-Inter goalkeeper is much travelled as a Coach, working in the US, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and England as well as his native Italy.

Gattuso, meanwhile, could now be destined for a reunion with Beckham at Inter Miami, who will debut in MLS next year.

That is because, as per La Gazzetta, the Englishman wants his former midfield partner to manage his newly-founded club.

A longer, shifted runway at Albert Whitted is worth studying | Editorial

St. Petersburg is a changed city. A master plan for Albert Whitted should let the airport plot a future that dovetails with the city’s evolution.

By shifting Albert Whitted’s main runway to the east, the protection zone could be moved onto airport property and off of USF St. Petersburg. That could allow buildings now just one or two stories tall to be replaced by three- to 10-story buildings. This rendering shows how a shifted -- and longer -- runway might look if it extended out into Tampa Bay. (Rendering via GAI Consultants)

https://www.reddit.com/r/TampaBayRowdies/comments/clx3jm/rowdies_dont_seem_to_be_the_subject_of_much/

Rowdies don't seem to be the subject of much discussion outside of this sub.

For the life of me I don't understand how our utter domination and form is not the talk of the general USL sub to some degree. No one seems to be talking about us or our players. Just seems strange. Not even haters.

honestly, I kinda like it that way. Let everyone else talk about dollar beer nights, deep open cup runs, inevitable MLS assimilation, llamas, etc. and we'll just hang out over here on the waterfront winning game after game

*sip

While that’s going on; I went to international mall yesterday and the amount of Bucs marketing is ridiculous and the season hasn’t started yet.

The official Rowdies online store has been down all season. They need to sort that out as I'm sure alot of fans would use it with the success of the team this season...

Hey, RumblesUbambaa, just a quick heads-up:
alot is actually spelled a lot. You can remember it by it is one lot, 'a lot'.
Have a nice day!

The online store isn’t a problem (I feel bad for the international fans though) it’s just getting the name out in the public like the ads at international mall.

As an international fan myself it is a problem and there are also plenty of fans who live outside of Florida who would use the store. However they do now have a few items on sale and are included in a promotional video at the Tampa airport so some effort has been made.

Thank you. It absolutely matters to those of us who live outside Florida. It’s a big problem. We want to support this club financially. This is our biggest way to do that. And frankly it’s embarrassing when my cousin in New York who I converted to a Rowdies fan this year calls the team store to order something because the online store is nonexistent and they tell him they’re not taking orders over the phone. I’ve asked about the online store a couple times and it doesn’t seem like anyone has any idea when it will be up. Hopefully they’ve made progress since I last asked.

There is a 'supporters summit' apparently being held in the locker room of Al Lang coming up soon. It will be brought up, along with other issues as well.

Hopefully the answer is better than “we don’t know. it’s out of our hands. It’s been contracted out to a third party.” That’s basically what I got.

I empathize with your situation. One would think with the Rays ownership coming in the merchandising would get more professional, not regress...

Well, their preseason does start this week and regular season kicks off in a month. It makes sense.

I would at least like to see something in return; we are in the playoffs spot (knocking on wood furiously) while the other team continues to fumble it year after year.

I hear you. Personally, I think I’d rather see more targeted digital advertising. More bang for your buck, IMO.

That depends so much on digital cookies and data gathering though it doesn’t work if no one is looking up the name in the first place without seeing the name in person.

there are Rowdies shirts at Walmarts now! :-D

I seen the pictures online just not in person yet lol. Still good to know :)

I’ve noticed this too. My feeling is the Rowdies have been dominant in terms of results, but not so much in terms of performances. Apart from a few exceptions, they haven’t blown many teams away. They’ve just gotten the job done. There is a handful of teams who have scored more goals than the Rowdies. After starting with a ton of clean sheets, they failed to secure one for two months and have now been surpassed by Phoenix in that category. They also don’t have one player standing out like Phoenix does with Asante in the Golden Boot race. The team is the star.

Asante is sick. Kid is what, 5 foot 2?! Or something crazy like that

J King's Corner (Week 22) CHS v TBR 0-5

Rowdies on a Roll- I could barely believe my eyes when I flipped on the Rowdies game last night and the ball was already in the back of the net. Before I could catch my bearings Mkosana was #2. I don't think the loss last week was a huge set back for the team, but rather a reminder that there are two eastern teams that are going to be hell to face in the playoffs. Baby Bulls and Indy Eleven. Most other teams look like they're fighting for survival, fighting for draws when they clash with the Rowdies.

Out of Batteries- Charleston has typically given the Rowdies fits in the past by playing physical and being a nuisance in the midfield. For whatever reason, the Battery's defense was abysmal. When the Battery had possession deep in Rowdies territory they had moments where they strung together some passes and put crosses into the box but absolutely nothing was really on or dangerous for them. There was a solid 20 minutes in the first half where it seemed like they might recover but then their keeper lets the Johnson corner slip right through his hands and that was all she wrote.

Has Poku reclaimed elite staus- I know this is USL competition for Poku but just last year he was struggling to dribble the ball. One offseason and a team and culture change and all of the sudden he's arguably in MLS form playing against USL competition. Poku's passing through the middle of the park is sublime. The Rowdies tweeted out one of his classy moments where he touched a ball out past one defender, sped right around another and played a through ball on the money to Guenzatti's feet. I've been watching Poku play like this in all of his minutes this season. One of the big changes was that Poku was moved back in central midfield where last season he was an attacking midfielder. At his current ability he could play either role well but he's a better fit further back where he can dribble past one or two defenders and play passes forward that stretch the defense.

Poku is arguably the best player in the best form on the Rowdies. A lot of offensive burden was on playing the ball through Fernandes, and that still happens a fair bit, but the addition of Johnson on the other wing now opens up two wings for the Rowdies to play through. Poku is the conduit in the middle.

Tinari back, Steinberger has a night- The centre mid spot becomes congested again with a healthy Tinari ready to go. Steinberger struggled against Baby Bulls and was back in form with a goal and two assists in Charleston. The second assist was more ceremony than it was Steinberger playing a pass to Lucky. His first assist came from good defense and a pretty simple feed but still, he put the pass right where it needed to be. His goal was also fairly simple as Johnson put a ball right at his feet in the box and Steinberger put a quality strike on it. Nonetheless, it was a high energy night for Steinberger who, like Guenzatti, is one of the better work rate guys on the defensive end. If Tinari is healthy I'd expect to seem him back in the centre attacking mid role before long but Steinberger remains a good option especially against mid-table teams.

Laundry is done- Finally a clean sheet is back in the Rowdies favor after the defense had a quiet night which was exactly what was needed with no Diakite. Doherty especially can be a quiet presence in defensive midfield which is pretty amazing since he's an 18-year old. He doesn't force anything. Kone was also quiet while Morad had a good bounce-back game and Richards gets better every week.

McCarthy- Any update on him. Injury report? Adam Schefter got anything?

Player Value update- Oh yeah, I still track player value every game and I have the data for the last two weeks, I just need to add it all. Planning to do that in the middle of this week. Work has been crazy. The Baby Bulls game might be the first team negative game, it'll be close.

RB ACADEMY

John Tolkin: Is the future now?

“We know that he’s got some special talents, and there was a reason why he he’s with us,” said Wolyniec ahead of a match with the first place Tampa Bay Rowdies. “And there’s a reason why he ends up on the field. He’s got abilities, and now it’s just kind of measuring those abilities and where they are right now, and how they fit in with us.”

Tolkin earned another start right away in a big time matchup against the Tampa Bay Rowdies. The Rowdies entered the match in first place, and soundly defeated NYRBII at home earlier this season. Despite Wolyniec stating before the match that he is not a guy that’s gonna show up on the stat sheet every week, Tolkin did just that. Reading a Mathias Jorgenson run perfectly, he slipped in a perfectly measured pass, recording his 3rd assist in 4 games.
