Most soccer fans in Broward will be wondering about the branding of the team, and whether this announcement could provide a much-desired return to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers to Lockhart Stadium.
Strikers return to Lockhart?
The last incarnation of the Strikers, which folded in 2017, had its intellectual property (including its name) put up for auction. Bill Edwards, the owner of the rival Tampa Bay Rowdies, bought the remnants of the club for $5,100 later that year. He never has announced plans for the property, but Edwards (whose club can also be found in the USL Championship) might be more inclined to bring the Strikers back with a league partner.
We are obviously many months away from getting a firm answer on whether the Lockhart redevelopment will take place and what role USL will play in that redevelopment. But the drama and intrigue involving Major League Soccer in Miami-Dade County may have just jumped the border.

The proposal to the City of Fort Lauderdale will be anchored by a best in class training facility, the Club’s youth academy, and a multi-purpose sports stadium
Miami, FL (Monday, January 28, 2019)- Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami “Inter Miami”, announced today that it has presented a proposal to the City of Fort Lauderdale for the design, construction and maintenance of a state-of the-art soccer training facility, a multi-purpose sport stadium and a sport centric community destination in the former Lockhart Stadium site.
“The vast history of soccer in South Florida has deep roots in Fort Lauderdale dating back to the original Strikers of the 70’s and 80’s, the Miami Fusion of the 90’s and early 2000’s as well as the recent clubs that have called Lockhart Stadium their home,” said Paul McDonough, Inter Miami’s Sporting Director. “It is a privilege to be able to present a sustainable proposal that honors that history and revitalizes the area. Our training facility will serve all of South Florida’s soccer community and provide amateur and professional athletes the opportunity to achieve their goals both on and off the field.”
The training facilities will serve as the training grounds for Inter Miami’s MLS team and will serve as the home to both its youth academy and anticipated USL team. The training site will feature several regulation soccer fields and a training complex with state-of-the-art amenities.
“The most important pillar of our legacy is our youth academy, where future players will have the opportunity to train alongside the professionals and aspire to one day represent our community in front of their hometown crowd,” added McDonough. “This proposal will establish our daily soccer operations in a centralized location that caters to youth players from all of South Florida, including Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.”
The Inter Miami youth academy will provide more than 120 local athletes with a fully funded opportunity to train and develop their soccer skills as they pursue professional or collegiate soccer careers. The academy’s teams will range from ages 12 to 19.
The proposed project contemplates a multi-purpose sports stadium capable of hosting professional national and international soccer matches, tournaments and exhibition games as well as youth soccer tournaments and high school sporting events, amongst others.
“With the Lockhart Stadium proposal, alongside Miami Freedom Park, we are poised to re-establish South Florida as the preeminent global soccer destination,” added McDonough.
Inter Miami’s proposal aligns with City of Fort Lauderdale’s desire to reactivate the former Lockhart Stadium site with a multi-use sports facility that would include a public park, public soccer fields and other community amenities. Rays Ybor Stadium Cancelled, What Next for the Rays and the Rowdies?
The Ybor Stadium plan is now off the table for the Rays. The owners claim they do not want to leave the area before 2027 (the end of their deal at Tropicana Field), but their options look increasingly limited. There are rumors that they would move the team to another city like Portland or Nashville.
How do we think this will impact the Rowdies? Obviously Al Lang won't be used by the Rays but I am concerned that our needs are going to be put aside as they put all of their resources into securing a future. If they move the team out of the state, would they even want to remain owners of the Rowdies?
