Cross-Bay Ferry wraps up its season today, but looks to return in a big way

The service connecting Hillsborough and Pinellas could be back later this year on a seasonal basis before becoming a permanent fixture in 2022.

Downtown St. Petersburg disappears in the distance as the Cross-Bay Ferry heads to Tampa at the start of the 2018-19 season in October. With ridership on the rise, officials want the service to return for another season in the fall, and plans are afoot for permanent, year-round service that would start in 2022.

For the last time this season, the Cross-Bay Ferry sets sail between Tampa and St. Petersburg on Tuesday, boasting a substantial ridership increase from its pilot season in 2017.

Any plans to make...

Minnesota United FC Have Adopted Oasis Song 'Wonderwall' As Club's New Anthem

MLS fans have been branded 'cringeworthy' and 'embarrassing' for their unconventional chants in the past, but Minnesota United have turned that perception around with a proper anthem from the stands.

It turns out after every home win 'The Loons' supporters participate in singing Oasis' number one hit "Wonderwall" and well, it might just be the best thing to come out of Major League Soccer for years.

With scarves raised and smoke surrounding the recently opened Allianz Field, thousands came together to sing the classic tune in unison. "BECAUSE MAYBEEEEEE!"

We strongly suggest you give this one a watch, folks.

MLS expansion: Dark horses already building great soccer palaces

The Chattanooga Red Wolves, Louisville City FC, and Indianapolis Eleven are all making stadium plans ahead of an MLS expansion bid. Here is the rundown on all three.

Three USL fringe candidates for Major League Soccer expansion aren’t waiting to get a nod.  Instead, they’ll make USL the Upgraded Stadium League and simply hope that MLS takes notice.

The Chattanooga Red Wolves, Louisville City FC, and Indianapolis Eleven all have long-term hopes to field MLS expansion teams on their pitches. But right now, their stadiums hold them back. So, the three cities launched firm plans to build top-flight soccer-specific stadiums. And soon.

All the stadiums reside in new entertainment complexes. That’s the kind of thing that grabs MLS governors’ attention.

Here’s the rundown:

Chattanooga Red Wolves stadium   5,500 seats

Louisville City FC stadium   11,700 seats

Indy Eleven Park   20,000 seats

Chattanooga expanding naturally

In MLS expansion mania, there’s no darker dark horse than the Chattanooga Red Wolves. The team is focused on building USL League One competitiveness. They’ve also had to repeatedly explain themselves as a piece of that area’s complex soccer puzzle.

That’s because of the already established National Premier Soccer League entry – the Chattanooga Football Club. The complaints are sort of like this: Imagine if there were a longstanding community theatre in your town. And then a flashy troupe opened a local stage that featured the traveling Broadway productions. And then the new theatre built an even greater, multi-purpose entertainment complex. That’s what’s launched in Chattanooga. And nobody wants to stop it.

And don’t bet $1 out of your worst enemy’s wallet that MLS isn’t monitoring this with extreme interest.

Louisville moving ahead

Louisville City FC have been waving to the league for MLS expansion for a while. Like the others, they have no intention of merely planning for future growth. Instead, they’re growing now and taking the community with them.

Their new stadium in Louisville’s historic Butchertown has financing in place. FC President Brad Estes made one of six finalists for Executive of the Year, the 2019 TheStadiumBusiness award. This stadium complex project pushed his name forward. So he’s in the running for an award whose judges each year seek the most outstanding venue visionary in the world. The award is presented this June, Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester, UK.

Indianapolis getting there fast

Indy Eleven would appear as dark a horse as Chattanooga. But they have brought up the subject of MLS expansion to the league before.

MLS expansion watchers discounted the Indianapolis bid because the league has plenty of strong Midwest coverage from Columbus and Cincinnati. But the market says just the opposite.

The Columbus Crew were saved from relocation in a strong and dramatic fashion. Cincinnati athletes played and supporters sang and chanted their way in the league, with their momentum not slowing, and there seems to be more room to grow in the local market. All Indianapolis needed was a soccer-specific stadium project.

The Indiana governor has such a project on the desk for action right now. It’s among the most ambitious multipurpose stadium complexes proposed that could involve MLS.  This certainly moves Indianapolis up in the line for MLS expansion.

Sacramento is in for sure, even though that’s not official, so for Indianapolis to become automatic, Phoenix would have to stumble. The Arizona contenders haven’t gotten close to doing that yet.

In the meantime, all contenders, from the front of the pack to the fringe, have to keep making plans. MLS expansion enjoys drama and suspense before it happens.

There is no effort in Louisville to join MLS. Our club is concentrating on being the best where we are. That requires a new soccer only stadium.

Until promotion and relegation are brought to the States, the US soccer pyramid is a shaky house of cards. Until teams earn their way into the top division and control of the club remains locally, I would prefer Louisville City FC stayed right where it is.

We understand the need for one of the country’s most successful soccer clubs to appear to be working to “buy” its way into the MLS but that is simply not the case.

Absolutely zero chance for Chattanooga. Too small of a market sandwiched halfway between Nashville and Atlanta.

Only the Indianapolis plan meets MLS capacity requirements.

David Beckham's Inter Miami stadium rival bids to halt development

The latest legal dispute involving Inter Miami FC's attempt to build an arena on the site of Lockhart Stadium took an unexpected turn on Tuesday, with rival bidder FXE Futbol having to go to court to halt what it deemed to be demolition work that had begun at the venue.

Last month the Ft. Lauderdale City Commission selected Inter Miami's $60 million plan to tear down Lockhart Stadium, and replace it with a new 18,000-seat stadium, as well as a training facility and fields for the public. Inter Miami's plans -- put forward by an ownership group that includes David Beckham and MasTec chairman Jorge Mas -- include playing its first two seasons in Major League Soccer at the rebuilt venue, starting in 2020. Inter Miami and the city signed an interim agreement last week, with demolition scheduled to begin on May 6.

Inter Miami's proposal was selected over that of FXE Futbol, whose plans involved renovating the facility as opposed to tearing it down. In response, FXE Futbol filed a lawsuit alleging that the City of Ft. Lauderdale City violated Florida state law as it relates to unsolicited offers for development of public land by a private entity by not getting "an architect, landscape architect, or an engineer licensed in this state" to review the proposals. State law also requires an "independent analysis" to demonstrate the public-private partnership's cost effectiveness.

FXE Futbol also accused Inter Miami of falsely stating to the City of Ft. Lauderdale that the FXE Futbol's proposal wasn't viable because of the "tremendous amount" of asbestos on the site, thus making a renovation unfeasible. FXE Futbol's managing partner J.P. Reynal was also concerned that "the subsequent signing of the interim agreement to demolish Lockhart would render our proposal impossible to deliver."

A hearing for the suit is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET on May 1, but on Tuesday workers began tearing down the light stanchions that ring the stadium. Ft. Lauderdale city manager Chris Lagerbloom denied that demolition work had begun on the site.

"Demolition is not occurring," Lagerbloom said in an email to ESPN. "The only work being performed on the City-owned property, as of today, is the removal of stadium lights in conjunction with aviation authorities and Florida Power and Light in accordance with the approved Interim Agreement."

David J. Winker, acting as counsel for FXE Futbol, went to court to put a halt to the work. In an email to ESPN, he said the work being done a day before the scheduled hearing marked "a new low" in the 25 years he had practiced law.

"Their defense was that they were only 'removing the lights in anticipation of demolition.' This is clearly not true as evidenced by the many pictures on social media.

"Caught red-handed and forced to stop, they have agreed they will not engage in any further demolition of Lockhart pending [Wednesday's] hearing."

Rowdies Home Attendance Thread - Game 5 vs. Charlotte Independence [4/27]

Attendance Thread

So this year totally has me puzzled. Ticketmaster sales looked weaker than some of the last few games on the site, but the stadium really filled out. I was thinking it was going to be sub 5k, but we ended up at 5,621 (which felt about right). Lots of people packing the party area and the new Bayshore food truck area. Weather was beautiful which definitely could have helped walkups.

Next up is the USOC game in a couple weeks...

What ticket do you need to get to have access to the Bayshore food area?

Any.... It's open to all.

I'm not sure about the mid-field food truck area though.

midfield is open as well, just have to have a ticket to get up into the seats.

J King's Corner- TBR v CLT (Week 8) 1-1

The Collins gamble has won the Rowdies big so far- I had my curiosities and reservations of Neill Collins being a head coach with an entirely new young squad to work with. That's a lot of unknowns to factor in with a coach in his first full year in the role. Cohen and Collins definitely found talented players over the offseason, and Collins has compounded that with sound tactics, fundamentals, and a group that is hungry and unselfish. If coaching is Collins' muse, I wager he has a long future in it and could work himself to higher levels. Collins has led the Rowdies to an undefeated streak amidst quality teams like St Louis and Louisville, several road games, and now in a 2-game week. I'd love to hear Collins talk sometime about how he sees and looks at the game and how he evaluates the performance of his players.

Morad's night to forget- Morad alongside Diakite has given me a lot of confidence in the Rowdies ability to keep opposing teams from getting good shots at McCarthy. Morad's defensive form has slipped depending on the competition but overall he's usually reliable and capable. He was neither of those against Charlotte. Charlotte had him in fits for all of the first half as it was really incredible Charlotte wasn't able to score on his defensive miscues. It may be fatigue that was a factor as Morad has played every minute so far. The faster he puts this match behind him, the better.

Guenzatti shines- Not only did Guenzatti score a really good goal, but I was also even more impressed by his overall contributions to the game as a ball handler in the offensive third. There was some Joe Cole to his game as he was patient, picking his moments, and placing thoughtful passes. I wager he might be a better fit as an attacking midfielder where he isn't under as much scrutiny to fire off more shots and chase down through balls. He's still not a lethal finisher and doesn't have breakout speed. But his ability to make quality passes and get good touches and keep possession was critical to the Rowdies attack against Charlotte. I'm coming around to why he's a really good quality player. At this point, I just think he isn't in his optimal position given his skill set.

Richards was a force- Usually, I don't try and highlight so many individual performances but I have to for Richards. Richards has been another guy I've given a lot of flack for his defensive lapses. He had a great game defensively against Charlotte. It could be a matchup advantage at the end of the day but nonetheless, Richards was fantastic.

Charlotte's flukey poacher's goal- It didn't take me long to see what happened on the Charlotte goal. The ball played in wasn't cleared by Allen who isn't a good defensive player and that allowed Charlotte to play it back across net where only Oduro was standing at the far post with Fernandes nearest to him leaving him unmarked walking away from the play expecting the ball to be cleared.

Time to find out what the Rowdies are made of- The Rowdies undefeated season has been aided by playing almost every team that has had a poor start to the season except for St Louis. Does this neglect their stellar performance? No. But it might be a wakeup call if either of the next two teams in Indy Eleven and Nashville wants to establish their place in the East as contenders. Both are top of the table teams with winning records. Both games are on the road. We've seen the Rowdies are willing to go scrap it out on the road. Now can they do it with a tiring roster and some injury concerns?

McCarthy makes insane saves- Weekly reminder that John McCarthy is special. We cannot take these one-on-one saves for granted. The Rowdies own the best goal difference in the USL because McCarthy has stopped some ridiculous shots.

Is Ekra injured? I feel like he would have been of use in this game...

I believe Ekra and Barry are both injured, and both are big assets to our offensive efforts so far. Hope they come back soon.

What was your opinion on Tejada out wide, instead of in the middle causing commotion? I thought he handled the ball well, service into the box was decent. He gets rid of the ball quickly when necessary. I'm a bit torn.

Our undefeated streak ends this week, I'm afraid. Indy and Nashville won't be so kind. I hope I'm wrong. Dropping these points at home (vs Loudon....Louisville....and now Charlotte, two of which are super-bottom of the table) is going to hurt us bad later.

I still don’t think these tactics take us out of the playoffs. I think we are still a top 5 team we are still just lacking in the forward midfield and getting the ball into the box, which I’m sure is being worked on. The boys play hard.

https://www.reddit.com/r/TampaBayRowdies/comments/bipjxb/three_things_rowdies_1_1_charlotte/

Three Things: Rowdies 1 - 1 Charlotte

So this was the first game of the season that I was able to attend after being a regular last season. A few things I took away:

Switching of fields was too slow and too predictable. Way too much SLOW side to side along the back. I’m all for possession but there needs to be purpose. An occasional big diagonal back to the side it come from was there for the taking.

Wing play. More of it please. Too often the ball went inside and things became too condensed until possession was lost. Use the width. Stretch the field.

There’s no way to nicely say this and forgive me if it was just an off night but there were a few players that simply weren’t up to par, especially in the back. #4 was caught in possession too much, lacked any arial prowess and looked a liability all game. #44 looked absolutely terrified to touch the ball with his left. Although he’s an imposing figure his lack of technical ability on the ball leaves a lot to be desired.

'Evergreen' Dominic Oduro salvages point for Charlotte Independence against Tampa Bay Rowdies

Ghana striker Dominic Oduro rescued a point for Charlotte Independence as they held USL Championship leaders Tampa Bay Rowdies to a 1-1 stalemate.

Independence went into the match with the aim of picking their second win of the season after recording five losses, one draw and one win in seven games.

The North Carolina-based side were handed an early lead when Dominic Oduro scored on the 11th minute with a smart finish.

The lead did not last, however, as Tampa Bay pulled parity six minutes later through Sebastián Guenzatti.

However, the Independence defense locked down for the second half. Behind an eight-save performance from 18-year-old goalkeeper Curtis Anderson, the Independence kept a clean second half.

The goal was Oduro's third since joining as a free agent in the winter transfer window.

He lasted 65 minutes while his namesake picked a booking but enjoyed entire duration of the game for Tampa Bay Rowdies. Kwadwo Poku also warmed the bench for Tampa Bay.

The Charlotte Independence will next play Saturday, May 4th versus Hartford Athletic at Dillon Stadium.

https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/8929456/giorgio-chinaglia-ny-cosmos-pele/

LONG JOHN Italian legend Giorgio Chinaglia made fascist salute, carried a gun, clashed with Pele and punched team-mates, The hot-headed striker played alongside the Brazilian for the NY Cosmos, but the pair never saw eye-to-eye with Pele often stealing his limelight

A brooding Italian, with fast feet and even faster tongue, Giorgio Chinaglia, nicknamed 'Long John' because of his resemblance to John Charles, was one of the most prolific strikers in football in the 1970s.

As the top scorer in Serie A in 1973/74, Chinaglia propelled Lazio to their first ever Scudetto and also gained international recognition, winning 14 caps for Italy, scoring four goals.

Giorgio Chinaglia was a legend for both Lazio and the NY Cosmos

He was also the star striker of the New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League (NASL), helping the fabled side to four NASL Soccer Bowls.

But as anyone who ever met him will testify, he wasn’t exactly the easiest guy to get on with.

“Giorgio is a brilliant player,” his Cosmos teammate Franz Beckenbauer once said, “but he has no career as a diplomat…”

A TOUGH START

Though he was born in Tuscany, Italy, he moved to Cardiff in 1955, aged eight.

His father Mario had left their homeland to find work in Wales in the steel industry but his entire family would have to live in just one room.

Giorgio is a brilliant player, but he has no career as a diplomat."

Franz Beckenbauer

In fact, the Chinaglias were so poor that young Giorgio has to resort to stealing the milk left on people’s doorsteps each morning on his way to school.

It was only when he was spotted scoring a hat-trick for Cardiff Schools at the age of 13 did he finally attract attention from Swansea Town (now Swansea City), signing his first contract.

A TEARAWAY

Chinaglia grew up in Cardiff and didn't return to Italy till he was 19

Chinaglia rose to fame with Lazio, becoming Serie A top scorer in 1973-74 and helping them win the title

At Lazio, Chinaglia scored 98 goals in 209 games between 1969-76

As one of a small group of foreign boys at his school, Chinaglia was often the target for some of the local lads.

“Back then there were fights in the schoolyard at least twice a week — the Welsh boys against the foreigners,” he explains.

And then he had a scrap with one of the teachers. Parents were summoned, the cane was duly applied and a threat of expulsion hung over him.

And then the PE teacher intervened, begging the head to reconsider.

“He said, ‘You can’t do that. He’s the best player we’ve got’.”

ITALIAN RETURN

When Swansea released Chinaglia in his late teens, the player and his family moved back to Italy when he was 19.

But that meant Giorgio would have to do compulsory military service.

Luckily, his prowess on the pitch saved his bacon and he was placed in a special regiment for footballers where all he had to do was train all day and then play the odd game.

It’s something Chinaglia credits with getting his faltering career back on track.

When Chinaglia passed away in 2012, Lazio's tifosi fondly remembered him in the stands

Chinaglia's bruising centre forward style was learned in Cardiff, where he played school football
“Otherwise, I'd probably still be in Wales,” he said, “slogging it out in the mud and drinking ale.”

ARMED AND DANGEROUS

Having helped Lazio to their first Scudetto in 1974, Chinaglia’s place in the club’s annals was assured but for Roma fans he was the devil incarnate.

Lazio were known to be Benito Mussolini's favourite team, and have a long association with fascism.

Chinaglia publicly expressed his support for the fascist party led by one of Mussolini's former henchmen.

He made even more enemies when he gave a Nazi salute to the notoriously far-right Lazio ultras after scoring the winner in the Rome derby.

This made him the target of death threats from terrorist groups, common on both sides of the political spectrum in Italy in the 1970s.

He took to carrying a gun.

Goalkeeper Felice Pulici later stated that “we all carried guns, in holsters”.

When they were bored, they used to shoot at birds from their hotel rooms.

Right-back Sergio Petrelli even shout out a light above his bed because he he couldn't be bothered to get up and turn it off.

During one team trip to the cinema, a Roma supporter recognised Chinaglia and began insulting him. Giorgio didn’t respond.

Then, when the lights were dimmed, the Roma fan found himself punched twice in the face, unaware as to who has just assaulted him.

NATIONAL SERVICE

Though he missed out on a place in Italy’s 1970 World Cup squad, Chinaglia did make the cut four years later when he was selected by national boss Ferruccio Valcareggi for the finals in West Germany.

But it didn’t work out quite as planned.

During the Azzurri’s opening game against Haiti, Chinaglia was substituted in favour of Pietro Anastasi and he wasn’t happy.

However, for the Italian national team Chinaglia regularly found favour and earned only 14 caps

At the 1974 World Cup, Chinaglia was unhappy at being subbed and kicked a dressing room door down

As he left the pitch, he swore right down the lens of a TV camera before storming away and booting down the dressing room door.

As for Italy, they were knocked out in the first round.

AMERICAN DREAM

When news emerged of Chinaglia’s transfer to the New York Cosmos, the Italian communities in the Bronx and Brooklyn staged a ‘Giorgio Chinaglia Night’ at a hotel on the banks of the Hudson River.

Hundreds of guests gathered and collected cash in black bin bags to give directly to Chinaglia.

“I have to tell you,” he said. “[There were’] A lot of people wished me well, let’s put it this way.”

WHISKY IN HIS LOCKER

Take Chinaglia’s locker in the Cosmos’ locker room.

While most players just stuffed a towel or two and their personal belongings in there, Chinaglia’s was like a roped-off VIP area.

There was a pristine chrome hairdryer, a wide range of high-end lotions and potions, a personalised silk robe, handmade slippers, some cigarettes, a Dunhill lighter, a bottle of Chivas Regal whisky and a crystal glass.

Chinaglia moved to the NY Cosmos in 1976 and became an instant success

Chinaglia was the NASL leading scorer four seasons in a row

The NY Cosmos won the NASL Soccer Bowl four times with Chinaglia upfront

'PELE PLAYED WITH ME'

When they were teammates at the New York Cosmos, Chinaglia and Pele’s relationship was frosty at best, primarily because the Brazilian World Cup winner always stole the Italian’s spotlight.

Rows were commonplace and countless truces brokered.

Once, when an interviewer asked Chinaglia if it was true that he had once played with Pele, he simply responded: “No, Pele played with me.”

MORE BUST-UPS

During one heated training session with the Cosmos, the young English winger Steve Hunt grew tired of Chinaglia’s less than energetic attempts to participate, calling him ‘lazy’.

No, Pele played with me."

Giorgio Chinaglia's Response When Asked If He Had Played With The Brazilian

“Next thing you know he’s put a right-hander on my chin,” recalls Hunt.

“So obviously I went back for him, there was a big melee… but I must say from then on we sat down and talked about that and we got on great.”

CHINA CRISIS

In 1977, Chinaglia and the New York Cosmos ventured to the Far East, becoming the first professional football team to play in the People’s Republic of China.

Pele played alongside Chinaglia, and the Italian hated being in the Brazilian's shadow

Although they often smiled for the cameras, behind the scenes Chinaglia and Pele didn't get on
While most of the Cosmos squad embraced the experience, Chinaglia was less than impressed with the country, especially the cuisine.

So rather than enjoy sea slug soup of jellyfish, Chinaglia took matters into his own hands, taking endless cans of ravioli and cannelloni with him instead.

ANGRY IN RETIREMENT

After his playing days came to an end in New York, Chinaglia returned to Italy to take over as the president of his beloved Lazio. But controversy was never far away.

In one game against Udinese at the Stadio Olimpico, for example, Chinaglia was apoplectic at the performance of the referee Gino Menicucci and took to attacking him with an umbrella at the end of the match.

An eight-month ban followed.

BUT HE COULD SCORE

In 213 regular season games for the New York Cosmos in the NASL, Chinaglia scored 193 goals while in 43 play-off games he scored a further 50.

LATEST FOOTBALL FEATURES

In 1980, meanwhile, He bagged seven goals in an 8-1 win over Tusla Roughnecks.

“I just wanted to score goals. I didn’t care who played beside me really.

"I never did, that’s why sometimes I wasn’t liked. But I don’t care about that.”

Chinaglia scored a remarkable 193 goals in 213 games for the NY Cosmos before retiring in 1983

Franz Beckenbauer once said of Chinaglia, "Giorgio is a brilliant player, but he has no career as a diplomat"

Later, Chinaglia returned to Italy to become president of Lazio when he hung up his boots

New York’s New Pro Rugby Team Lands a French Star

The lure of the United States can be big, even for established international sports stars.

Pelé came to the North American Soccer League in the 1970s and was followed by a who’s-who of veterans. Major League Soccer has brought over big names like David Beckham, Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the twilight of their careers. Ichiro Suzuki and Shohei Ohtani joined Major League Baseball in their prime.

Now the fledgling Major League Rugby seems to be heading down a similar path with the arrival of a foreign superstar: Mathieu Bastareaud, a 30-year-old French stalwart, will join Rugby United New York, which is playing its first season. Bastareaud plans to play stateside next year for one season on loan before returning to his club team in France, Toulon.

Major League Rugby entered the crowded North American sports landscape last year, with the New York team joining before the second season. The league, now with eight teams in the U.S. and one in Canada, plays under the rules of rugby union, the 15-a-side variant of the game that is most familiar to American college players and viewers of the quadrennial World Cup.

New York’s first season has been a success on the pitch so far. The team is 8-3 and on course for a playoff berth.

Needless to say, New York did not approach Toulon demanding to acquire one of their marquee players. “Bastareaud’s agent reached out to us,” said James English, R.U.N.Y.’s general manager. “Bastareaud is a big fan of New York. He loves the city; he wants to be part of this.”

English said that Bastareaud found the French League “quite taxing.” “They call that league a meat grinder,” he added, “because the season is so long.” So a year’s sabbatical in New York had some real appeal.

“It’s a new adventure,” Bastareaud told Canal Plus Sport. “It was the best compromise for me of family, life experience and playing rugby.”

The announcement made front-page news in France, where Bastareaud is a mainstay, compiling 54 appearances for the national team. The French sports newspaper L’Equipe’s headline read “Big Basta à Big Apple.”

At 260 pounds, Bastareaud is large for a rugby center, a position that requires quite a bit of running and kicking, not just slamming into opponents.

“He’s quite an all-around player,” English said. “You can be fooled into thinking that he’s one-dimensional. He’s got a high skill level, either kicking or with ball in hand.”

English sees many benefits from acquiring a player of the caliber of Bastareaud.

“He’s a real leader,” English said. “He’s got a huge amount of experience. Having people who have played at that level is great to help the players surround him. He’s very physical; he’s an imposing figure. He’s about going forward. People tend to follow.”

Top French League players earn significantly more than players in the new American league. English declined to talk about financial arrangements, but emphasized that Bastareaud would remain a Toulon player for the duration of the loan. L’Equipe reported that he would make half of what he is making in France, but he told the paper, “that’s part of the adventure.”

Bastareaud plans to play for France in the World Cup in Japan through November, then report to New York for the 2020 season in the new year. He will remain in New York through the season, which ends in July. The team plays in a minor league baseball park on Coney Island.

Toulon is in 10th place in the Top 14, France’s top rugby division. The team was French champion in 2014 and European champion in 2015, with Bastareaud scoring a try in the final.

“Mathieu Bastareaud is a guy apart,” Toulon Coach Patrice Collazo told Agence France-Presse. “He has made history at this club and has given a lot. He needs to see something else and breathe a little bit. He’s going to discover New York.”

English emphasized that the acquisition of the veteran star was not a ticket-selling sideshow.

“This is not just a free ride for a guy coming to the end of his career,” he said. “It’s not an easy place to live. New York is a hustle. We’re a start-up, there’s a lot that goes with that.

“This is predominantly an on-field decision. He’s very much in his prime as a player.”

IN-DEPTHCanadian Premier League: Canada’s soccer startup kicks off

Pacific FC host Halifax Wanderers in the second ever Canadian Premier League match (Manuel Veth/Pro Soccer USA)

VICTORIA, BC — On Saturday Canadian soccer history was made when the Hamilton Forge hosted York 9 for the opening game of the Canadian Premier League. The 1-1 draw between the two teams was the first ever match to take place in Canada’s first-ever coast-to-coast soccer league.

Then on Sunday attention moved out west, from Ontario to British Columbia. On Vancouver Island, Pacific FC hosted Halifax Wanderers FC for the first-ever cross country matchup in the league and became the first team to win a game, 1-0.

Canada’s CPL kicks off first season with a local look and a passionate commitment

April 29 – The world’s newest tier 1 national league kicked off at the weekend with the Canadian Premier League (CPL) officially opening its inaugural season in Hamilton with a 1-1 draw between Forge FC and York 9 FC.

The seven-team CPL will run until October with each team playing 28 games and operating a Spring and Fall season format that will climax with the two winners of the season ‘halves’ playing off for the title.

It is a major step forward for Canadian football in terms of developing a local and governable top tier, professional leagues structure. Currently Canada’s top teams play in the MLS in the US – Montreal Impact, Toronto FC and Vancouver.

The CPL teams will face the MLS teams in the Canadian Championship for Canada’s spot in the Concacaf Champions League, while one CPL team is guaranteed to play in the Concacaf League against clubs from Central America and the Caribbean for a further spot in the Champions League.

Talk about matchmaking: 2017 U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens and soccer player Jozy Altidore are engaged.

Both tweeted the news Monday, posting a photo and brief message.

Hers said: ''Forever yes.'' His said: ''Forever starts now.''

In addition to winning a Grand Slam title 1+ years ago, Stephens was the 2018 French Open runner-up and was a member of the 2017 championship U.S Fed Cup team.

The 26-year-old American currently is ranked No. 8.

The 29-year-old Altidore has scored 41 goals in 110 international appearances since his U.S. national team debut in 2007. He has not played for the Americans since October 2017, when a loss at Trinidad and Tobago prevented them from qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

Altidore has been with Toronto FC in Major League Soccer since 2015.

Twitter Expands Live-Streaming Video Lineup, Sets Content Deals With Viacom, ESPN, Live Nation, Univision, and More

Twitter is continuing to bulk up on live video — but its strategy is less of a volume play than an attempt to build deeper connections with targeted audiences on the social platform through partnerships with media companies and sports leagues.

Twitter announced a series of new and expanded deals at its Digital Content NewFronts presentation Monday in New York, its third appearance in the IAB-managed digital marketing series.

In addition to new initiatives with previous partners including the NFL, ESPN, Viacom, Major League Soccer, Live Nation, and Activision Blizzard, Twitter unveiled a deal with Univision Communications to bring more premium sports, news and entertainment content to the social network’s U.S. Hispanic users. In addition, Twitter is adding content from the Wall Street Journal and Time magazine.

Canadian Premier League is here - but will enough people care?

HAMILTON, ONTARIO - While fans were filing out of Hamilton's blustery Tim Hortons Field on Saturday, Toronto FC and the Portland Timbers kicked off just over 65 kilometers away.

"It didn't even cross our minds, truthfully," commissioner David Clanachan told theScore of the timing of the Canadian Premier League's inaugural match between Forge FC and York9 FC.

Speculation was rife that the clash with Major League Soccer at BMO Field was a deliberate act of defiance by the CPL. Instead, if Clanachan is to be believed, it was a convenient accident.

So, rather than board a pricey train to downtown Toronto over the weekend, 17,611 soccer fans descended on an industrial wedge of Hamilton with few attractions aside from a reptile zoo in a strip mall. A hoard of journalists ditched their usual TFC beat to chase what was a more compelling story: Could this new league, with its exhaustive travel and inferior on-pitch quality to what many viewers are used to, actually survive? Is the CPL a viable alternative to MLS?

‘We learned a lot’: Major League Rugby commissioner Dean Howes sees success where others failed

In a World Cup year, the global ambitions of rugby union are under renewed scrutiny. Now in its second season, Major League Rugby is the most coherent effort to date at an American domestic league and with deals banked with CBS Sports Network and ESPN+, commissioner Dean Howes believes its long-term prospects are healthy.

This is a testing year for the expansionist ambitions of rugby union. The 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan is the first outside an established nation, with the performances of the hosts, among others, providing a useful barometer of the game’s burgeoning global maturity.

But one of the biggest tests for a sport still only a quarter of a century as a professional discipline has been putting together viable domestic competitions - particularly outside its very biggest markets. Major League Rugby (MLR) played its first season in 2018, with an initial seven teams playing to modest but consistent crowds averaging in the low thousands. 2,901 fans made the trip to the Tolero Stadium in San Diego last July to watch the Seattle Seawolves take the inaugural title, beating Glendale Raptors 23-19.

For MLR commissioner Dean Howes, these are only the seeds of what the league can grow into in due course.

“Its potential to me is why we’re doing this,” he says. “Rugby is played on every continent. Rugby is an international sport. I don’t know that it lives up to its full potential even internationally compared to some other sports but it has great potential to.

“It is a wonderful sport to watch inside the stadia. It’s constant action. It is just a great spectator sport and not all sports are.”

Howes is speaking to SportsPro from the US with MLR's second season - that has seen the league expand to nine teams - already underway. The 2019 edition has seen Rugby United New York and Toronto Arrows joining founding members from Austin, Houston, Glendale, New Orleans, San Diego, Seattle and Utah. The annual salary cap, according to ESPN, is believed to be US$350,000 per team, compared with the UK£7 million (US$9.06 million) spent by clubs in England’s Gallagher Premiership.

https://mlsmultiplex.com/2019/04/27/mls-expansion-new-team-spots-added/

MLS expansion: Some new team spots have been added

MLS expansion plans have risen to total 30 teams. That’s with Sacramento Republic FC in the lead and a surprise return contender officially in the mix.

As Major League Soccer’s expansion plans officially sink in, leading contender Sacramento Republic FC were preparing to meet another contender on April 27, Phoenix Rising FC.

But Phoenix Rising FC, at best, is the third contender in line. Sandwiched in between Phoenix and Sacramento is an MLS expansion contender that really is a phoenix bird rising from the ashes.

It’s St. Louis. That’s the area that a couple of years ago that staged a confusing battery of pro-MLS-expansion votes. The most important part of the measure got voted down because voters in St. Louis proper, who believed the stadium and games would mainly benefit the soccer-crazed suburbs. And the suburbanites wouldn’t have to pay the taxes.

That all happened back in April 2017. Like the other major MLS expansion contenders, their USL team, St. Louis FC, remains a respectable draw in the league, but their bid, still alive, shocked MLS expansion observers.

But there it was in print, in an official MLS press release. After the recent MLS Board of Governors met in Los Angeles, the Commissioner’s office was ordered to advance discussions with both Sacramento and Los Angeles.

Both those groups will get calls to present final soccer-specific stadium plans to the MLS Expansion Committee. They will have to detail corporate commitment, ownership group members, the economics of funding, fan and player development plans and community programs.

The 28th and 29th teams will be announced by the July 31 All-Star game. Expansion fees will be $200 million. Detroit at one time was talked up as a strong MLS expansion contender. They have a healthy soccer culture. Like the other top contenders, they are a top-20 media market. What Detroit is missing is a plan for a soccer-specific stadium. They plan to use the existing NFL venue.

Of all the official and speculative MLS expansion candidates, only the Detroit group wants a pass on the stadium issue. Soccer-specific stadium plans exist for Phoenix and other groups hot for MLS membership. Those other contenders include Raleigh, North Carolina, Charlotte, South Carolina, Tampa, San Diego, Indianapolis, and Las Vegas. Maybe one or two more.

Sacramento is already far ahead of the competition in stadium plans. And everything else. They’re next. But on the stadium front, Phoenix has a fascinating proposition for outdoor soccer featuring advanced cooling options.

Yet, St. Louis somehow jumped back in line for MLS expansion and got the league Board of Governors’ attention. They’ve got something figured out. Stay tuned to find out how they’ll join Sacramento in U.S. top-tier soccer.

Magic City Soccer is offering a great hat! It looks great and helps keep our site running! Photo by Matthew Bunch.

We at Magic City Soccer love soccer in Miami-Dade County. We also love sweet swag with allusions to our hometown. That’s why we’ve created t-shirts and now a signature hat with our “Neon Nights” design for our supporters to rock. It’s very Miami, and it’s a hell of a lot cooler than an NPR totebag.

This lovely snapback will only put you back $30 (think of it as a donation to a worthy cause). If you’re interested in purchasing a hat, e-mail us at MagicCitySoccer.MCS@gmail.com and we’ll provide you more information. As always, thank you for your support and thanks for reading and listening!

Great show tonight! They celebrated their 200th episode with a live broadcast from The Shamrock in Sarasota. It was a send off for Dan who we’ll miss, and the FNG, Stephen Cundiff did a phenomenal job right out of the gate. The show is live on Radio St. Pete Wednesday nights and available through your favorite podcast aggregator. #fuckorlando

Thanks guys! The show wouldn't exist without what Dan brought to it & I hate to see him go (though I'm proud of what he's going to do) but I'm also super excited to bring Stephen in and see where this goes from here! We'll be live at Shamrock again next week after the game!

Would ya'll be interested in a mutual podcast collaboration? :) I do the Great Things Tampa Bay podcast and am also on Radio St Pete, and have a strong distaste for Orlando.

Dan and Matt had a great formula...great run to do 200 shows...

J King's Corner- ATL2 v TBR (Week 7) 1-4

Killer Instinct- Last night's match was an era-defining win for the Rowdies on a few measures. First of all, this reserve Atlanta side was a few levels above the team we lost to last year. This reserve team had confidence and quality and it showed for stretches of the game. Taking the points on the road was never a foregone conclusion here. That being said, this year's Rowdies team doesn't resemble the Jekyll and Hyde combination that home stands and road trips resorted to. Gone are the days are struggling to claw out 0-0 or 1-1 draws on the road. This Rowdies team showed killer instinct in the second half to put Atlanta to pasture. This win is the moment that should assure the fans that the Rowdies mean business this season and playing for a top half seed in the playoffs should be the expectation.

Roster Depth- While many of Collins' lineups have remained consistent with five guys playing every minute of the season so far, Collins has also flexed roster depth calling on Najem, Tejada, and Doherty to give him quality minutes. It has to be comforting for Collins to know he can get the same energy out of Tejada whether he's starting or coming off the bench. He's a no brainer lock to play in every match you need him for. More on him in a moment. To see Collins have a lineup that's so adjustable and fluid speaks to the concepts and philosophies he's been instilling in this team during training. He can move have Morad and Richards switch sides if he needs more defensive depth when bringing Kone on. Collins can also swing Tejada wide and add an extra attacker up top like Hoppenot. His middle can be defensively oriented or attack oriented because he can move guys in and out like Doherty and Steinberger. As the season goes along I'll be very curious to see how Collins manages minutes as legs get weary.

Fernandes is heating up- I've been back and forth on Fernandes for some time now. He's had matches where he shines and matches where he's outmatched and neutralized. One thing seems to be for certain about Fernandes this season, he's the primary offense creator. Tinari does a fair bit of creating but I think it's hard to argue that Fernandes has been the go-to option on the left wing. He's a very boom or bust player but when he's on, Fernandes is DEALING. With 2 more assists and a goal tonight, Fernandes should continue to create chances.

This f*cking guy- There's one thing I imagine every defender that matches up against Tejada says to their back line, "I can't stand this f*cking guy." Tejada has this Rocky Balboa mentality where he keeps getting punished by defenders twice his size and he gets right back up and battles them again and again. He chases guys around and keeps his arms active. He has to be terribly frustrating for opposing defenders who usually aren't being nicked at constantly. He reminds me of NBA player Patrick Beverly who is known as a defensive point guard. Tejada still has some growth to do in his technical ability. He's by no means a slouch passing or dribbling, but he'll need to mature and develop so that he's not only bothering defenders, but beating them by being crafty and elusive. Can't imagine what's going through that kid's mind after tonight. Scoring his first professional goal. He earned it.

Get this guy some rocket boosters- I mean seriously, Guenzatti had himself a fine match tonight because as always he plays hard, makes sensible passes, and plays well in the high press. But there were two moments in the game where Guenzatti is taking runs into the box and is getting tackled off the ball without a shot on goal or chance being created. He's far too slow on these through balls because defenders are catching him every damn time. Just give him a jetpack. Problem solved. Criticisms aside he had a great chance created on what became the Najem shot own goal. Tinari doing the dummy fake was cheeky as f****ck.

Diakite is human- Diakite was beaten a couple of times tonight. Most notably when he and Morad gave up the only Atlanta goal. There were other occasions where he would push up crazy far. There was one play where Diakite made a tackle in the far right corner of offensive third and then played in a perfect cross that Guenzatti whiffed at. But it was crazy to see the defense get by Diakite on a few occasions because it was a reminder this guy is human. He still did Diakite stuff like his dribbling footwork that's unbelievable.

We asked for offense, and so it was given- We now know what the Rowdies are capable of. If the Rowdies are assuring 1-2 goals a game, their defense has shown they're likely to only give up 1 at the most. It's a good place to be at this point in the season. This is awesome.

Great write up!

This was a solid win for the Rowdies! Mid-week, on the road and from an early deficit. Something they haven't been able to do consistently for years.

Those 3 points really gave us boost! As one of the last 3 undefeated squads things are looking solid for Tampa Bay!

Watched the full game on espn+ and was stoked on our overall performance. The goal given up was pretty awful, but great to see them answer back and not take the foot off the gas.

That high press will burn the Rowdies from time to time when teams can time their runs. To be fair it took a perfect through ball to spring their offense.

My monitor must have been blurry.. I saw a backline that gets completely eliminated with a well placed through ball from nothing. Twice, almost 3 times. I saw a frontline that, while putting in work, is completely bereft of ideas or awareness of what's around them. Leeo can get balls in the box. Thank God for that. I didn't see a midfield... Lateral or backward passing when it goes there, but usually everyone booting it forward when they have the time to play a pass, skipping it entirely. I saw horrible defensive lapses made by a disjointed Atlanta side that if we wouldn't have capitalized on, it would have been embarrassing. Both goals almost missed. Najem from 3 yards? I saw a scoreline highly glossed from a flurry of goals at the end as Atlanta seemingly gave up. We are undefeated. Great. Top of the table but teams have games in hand on us...Just get in the playoffs, we know anything before doesn't mean dick anyway (ask the Lightning). We agree on Tejada. He's a dynamo and deserves the plaudits he's been getting. Staying optimistic, and it's a good wave to ride with away wins. But damnit, it just doesn't seem to get any easier watching this team...

Lol usually I’m the cynic. You sure you weren’t watching a Hartford game? The Rowdies played well for most of the match. It was by no means flawless but remember you had two backup midfielders in Najem and Doherty who aren’t offensive creators.

Couple of minor changes to the document this week in the totals tab. Offensive and Defensive value make their debuts as I wanted a metric to track where certain players are receiving a majority of their points. The metric is simple. Defensive value takes points earned on defense and is divided by a player's per 90. Offensive value takes into account passing, shooting, and dribbling and divides the total by the per 90. This should better reflect which players are making positive and negative plays on each side of the ball.

Doing the video analysis was a b#tch and a half this week with the volt jerseys. I'm glad most of the fanbase think they're awful. It's hard enough to tell if you're watching Tinari or Guenzatti from two zip codes over, it's even more difficult when the jersey's blind your eyes. I had to look at shoe colors to distinguish players. Rant aside.

Fernandes was the top performer of the match totaling a season-high 9 points. He comes off a solid 5 last week. Steinberger holds the lead for the highest game total with 11 against Pittsburgh.

Good passing performances from Guenzatti and Fernandes.

Good defensive game from Doherty.

Diakite's first negative defensive performance.

Tinari, Diakite, Tejada, and Steinberger are in the 5 avg value club.

Guenzatti, Hoppenot, Tinari, and Steinberger are all above 2 avg offensive value.

Stat updates:

John McCarthy has saved 20 of 23 shots. For comparison. Cody Mizell who leads the league in saves has saved 27 of 38 shots.

Diakite leads the league in clearances with 58. The next guy behind him is 12 back.

Fernandes is 3rd in the league in crosses with 47 (Rowdies website has him with 30). Fernandes is also tied for 2nd in assists with 4. He's 11th in chances created with 15.

Oduro, Tinari, and Morad are all above 80% pass accuracy. How Oduro has achieved this feat with his amount of turnovers is beyond me.

https://www.gamingpost.ca/canadian-sports-science-news/fury-asks-for-usl-ruling/

The Fury Turns To Arbitration In USL Issue

Ottawa Fury FC has no intention of abiding by the decision of CONCACAF to disallow it from playing in the USL. Fury is currently the only remaining Canadian team in the United Soccer League’s top tier, and opting to play in the USL means that the team will not be participating in the Canadian Premier League. The CONCACAF’s decision is in fact based on just that: to ensure that the Canadian Premier League takes centre stage in 2019.

Ottawa Fury FC has now said that it will be turning to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for assistance. The CAS is an independent body that facilitates the settlement of disputes in sports, and is located in Switzerland. Its main order of business is sports arbitration and mediation. Whilst the Fury’s decision to approach the CAS may seem slightly over the top, the team has said that the CONCACAF’s refusal to sanction its participation in the USL is now having the effect of it not being able to sign players or sell tickets just four weeks ahead of its upcoming training camp.

More than just a competitive sport decision, the refusal to sanction is now erring on the side of affecting business. According to Fury parent company president Mark Goudie, the team’s decision to approach the CAS is nothing more than just business, seeing that every action is now officially on the clock.

Why Last Year Was Different

The fact that last year saw no similar issues when both Toronto as well as Ottawa played in the USL without any of the governing bodies having had as much as batted an eyelid, speaks volumes more about the contributing factors in terms of the CONCACAF’s decision. Because last year, of course, there wasn’t yet any new Canadian Premier League.

It’s nothing personal on the part of the Fury either. It’s made no secret of the fact that it does support the new Canadian Premier League. And reasonably speaking, it would normally have been well within its rights of choosing where and when it wanted to compete. The fact that it said that it wanted to remain part of the USL instead, at least for now, appears to be what has managed to really irk and ruffle the feathers of the CONCACAF.

Purely A Business Decision

Tried and tested; sticking to what you know. There appears to be no more behind the Fury’s insistence to remain in the USL than just that. The franchise’s reasoning that it should at least be permitted to choose its fate in terms of the immediate future doesn’t appear to be an unreasonable request.

At least the CAS’s decision can be expected to be handed down without too much of a time delay. And that, says Goudie, is after all what the CAS is there for.

David Beckham on how whisky took over from football

David Beckham flashes that famous disarming smile as he greets me and takes a seat.

It’s around 3pm on a gloomy Wednesday afternoon and the clouds overhead look like they may burst at any minute. It feels like we’re in London, but we aren’t.

We’re seated next to an exquisite pond by the koi terrace at the Saxon hotel in Sandhurst, Johannesburg.

“It’s warm for us here,” he laughs, when I mention this must feel like home. It’s been raining all day in London, he adds, then explains how he makes a habit of following the weather even when he’s out of town.

Beckham is in South Africa on a promotional run for Haig Club, the whisky brand he’s been affiliated with since its inception in 2014.

I ask him if he ever imagined he’d be in this position.

“I think I had many ambitions when I was growing up and being involved with a beverage brand was not one of them because my dream was always to be a professional footballer.

“That’s all I cared about and for many years. Thankfully, I was able to do it professionally. But it wasn’t until later in my career that we started discussions with Diageo. We talked about the possibilities and I said that once I had finish playing we could go into a partnership.”

Having played professionally for just over two decades, finding a way to fill the void of retirement was not easy. But his work with Haig Club has gone a long way towards keeping him busy.

“To be honest, I was always gonna miss it,” he says. “I was doing something I loved for years, doing it professionally for 22 years and playing in the teams and countries I’ve played in.

“But I think I’ve replaced part of that with the team in my office. I have a great team that works really well with me, that does great, innovative stuff. We’ve enjoyed the last few years and I think being successful, working hard are what I enjoy now.”

Many purists insist the best way to enjoy a good whisky is neat or with water. Beckham shares his favourite ways of enjoying the Haig Club Clubman that is perched in the bucket of ice on the table in front of us.

“It’s a difficult question because since we started this partnership I’ve travelled to so many different places where so many mixologists or barmen have made cocktails and different ways of drinking Haig. It’s great to see, but it’s also confusing because I’m a creature of habit; so when I find something I like, I stick to it.

“Three ways, I’d say: on the rocks, neat, and I actually like the new one with orange and tonic.”

The bottle itself is a beautiful part of the whisky. Ever the perfectionist, he played an integral role in its design. “You’ll get to know that when I’m involved in something, I’m really involved in it,” he says.

“I don’t just say take my name and go and use it. When I’m involved in a project and I believe in a partnership, I’m there from day one - to the point where I might annoy everyone at Diageo.

“I was involved with the discussions of the liquid, the family, the history, the colour of the bottle, the colour of the cap, how big the words go on the bottle - I’ve been involved in every process we’ve done from day one.”
