USL power ratings: July 8, 2019

Welcome to the USL power ratings! Don’t forget to follow the site on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook for all the content on USL, US Soccer, and Nashville SC.

Table Power

This rating method combines points per game with the quality of opposition played (also measured in points per game). It’s blind to home/away splits as well as scoring margin. The goal is to project a final table based on the games already played.

USL East power rankings:

Tampa Bay Rowdies – 71.69 projected points
Indy Eleven – 70.95 points
New York Red Bulls II – 62.53 points
North Carolina FC – 58.90 points
Ottawa Fury (+1) – 57.90 points
Nashville SC (-1) – 55.46 points
Louisville City (+1) – 53.30 points
Pittsburgh Riverhounds (-1) – 52.14 points
Charleston Battery – 47.36 points
Saint Louis FC – 45.33 points
Loudoun United (+1) – 37.27 points
Charlotte Independence (+1) – 37.04 points
Bethlehem Steel (-2) – 36.09 points
Atlanta United 2 – 28.34 points
Memphis 901 (+2) – 28.16 points
Birmingham Legion (-1) – 26.87 points
Swope Park Rangers (-1) – 25.71 points
Hartford Athletic (-1) – 19.39 points

Tampa and Indy maintain their lead on the field, with Tampa holding onto the top spot over idle Indy (even though the Rowdies’ numbers dropped ever-so-slightly due to the out-of-town scoreboard and a softening of their own strength of schedule for playing Swope).

J King's Corner (Week 18) SPR v TBR 1-3

A goal sequence for the ages- If there was any takeaway from yesterday's Kansas City massacre, it was definitely in the sequence of events that led to the third goal. Malik Johnson's first goal as a Tampa Bay Rowdie. You couldn't script it any better. There have been times where technically skilled Rowdies players like Fernandes and Guenzatti will try flicks and backheels and stepovers among other moves, but the success rate isn't usually high. Well, Johnson and Guenzatti had other ideas. Johnson flicked the ball over his defender, Guenzatti hit the backheel pass, both passes were perfectly placed which is the hardest part. Johnson had a great touch off of Guenzatti's flick and he was able to get the defender coming towards him off balance and blast the ball between the keeper's legs. This is how you make it abundantly clear to your opponent you're better than them.

Pumping the fists and pumping the brakes- The good news for Rowdies fans in an easy defeat of Swope Park is that the Rowdies have established they are better than below average competition. The Swope Park Rangers are a prospect team of all youth players. The Rowdies are a combination of young veterans and prospects. We can pump our fists because the Collins era continues to be fruitful as he's proven his coaching style translates perfectly to USL competition. The next three competitors are a murderers row. Pittsburgh who plays Lilleyball which the Rowdies have struggled with defensive teams this season, St Louis who is one of the best teams in the league, and Baby Bulls who are known for their offensive assault. It's three good teams with three very different styles of play.

Running ramshod on the road- I've been workshopping some theories on why the Rowdies have made a complete turnaround from a petulantly awful road team in the past to have not lost a road game this season. There was a time when the Rowdies lost on the road to a lowly Richmond Kickers side. I think it was a loss. That or a draw. Nonetheless, I recall succinctly during the Campbell era that there was a lot of, let's hope to get one point on the road and win all our home games. The Rowdies simply looked different in road games. Uncomfortable and unwilling. The 2019 Rowdies play with a lot more ferocity and fervor on the road. At home, the Rowdies are usually afforded the same respect they always have been. Teams allow the Rowdies possession and try to slip out on counters to get their goals. On the road, the Rowdies play bully ball and win back possession when they lose it and keep home teams on their heels. They do this also to an extent at home. But with the increased energy and Collins preaching a run "10 miles (or whatever the number is) a game" mentality, the Rowdies are outworking teams on the road. Plus there's just a confidence on the ball no matter the playing surface. I still think the Rowdies struggle somewhat on turf versus grass but I don't think it's as pronounced as it was in years past.

Macklin debut- He was impressive. He had three saves that were high quality. The first coming off a hard hit volley that had the possibility of going off the top crossbar and in. Robinson parried that one nicely. The second one he came out showed lightning fast reaction time to get a hand on what looked to be a flicked cross to the back post. Robinson also saved a fairly poor penalty but a big-time save nonetheless. Nice to give McCarthy a day off and let the young kid get a start.

Eye on the back line- As I said, these next three matches are crucial in the battle for first place as Indy is still two games behind the Rowdies. The Rowdies have given up 1 goal in the last 5 matches but two of those were pretty soft penalties. The Johnson one I understand but the Morad one was really soft. The Rowdies defensive trio has been excellent but they are prone to crafty and pacy wingers who will catch them out of position.

Court, in mortgage fee lawsuit, sides with prominent area businessman

A company run by Bill Edwards faced claims that it overcharged borrowers.

ST. PETERSBURG — Mortgage Investors Corp., a company chaired by St. Petersburg businessman Bill Edwards, the former owner of the Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer club, has been exonerated in a long-running federal lawsuit that stemmed from its involvement in a loan-refinancing program for veterans.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Georgia ruled July 1 that the claims made in the lawsuit — Bibby v. Mortgage Investors Corp., first filed in 2006 — lacked merit.

MIC faced allegations, made by two mortgage brokers and the U.S. Department of Justice, that it violated the False Claims Act during its participation in the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Interest Rate Reduction Refinancing Loan (IRRRL) program.

Under Edwards’ leadership, MIC originated hundreds of thousands of mortgage loans to veterans worth some $25 billion. The unfounded accusations, according to a statement, included charging borrowers illegal fees and then covering up the overcharges via falsified paperwork.

9. Rangers Fall to Rowdies

The Swope Park Rangers fell 3-1 to the first-place Tampa Bay Rowdies on Sunday afternoon at Children’s Mercy Park. SPR forward Ethan Vanacore-Decker scored for the second time in as many games, slotting home midway through the second half, but Tampa Bay had already built a 3-0 cushion amidst stifling temperatures in the midsummer Kansas City sunshine.

https://www.retail-insight-network.com/comment/celebrity-endorsed-drinks-2019/

Is celebrity booze a winning mix?

Celebrity booze is becoming big business. There has always been good money in an endorsement from a star, but recent years have seen direct ownership of brands by celebs growing rapidly. As the audience of these influencers grows via platforms such as Instagram and Twitter, brands associated with it will see a huge marketing advantage compared to traditional brands, and without the bulk of the marketing costs incurred by a traditional campaign.

Celebrity endorsed drinks

Iron Maiden was among the pioneers of direct ownership, with their “Trooper” ale being a success with both beer critics and drinkers alike, as well as having strong crossover appeal to Iron Maiden fans who were not previously ale drinkers. While relatively modest by the standards of later celebrity launches, the beer saw a significant boost in popularity due to the prominent use of the band’s name and images.

The success of The Trooper alerted both brands and celebrities to a significant opportunity. This can clearly be seen in the influx which followed: Jay-Z bought Armand de Brignac, David Beckham became associated with Haig Whiskey, UFC star Connor McGregor launched Proper 12 Whisky, P-Diddy became a partner in Ciroc Vodka. The list is far too extensive to fully cover here and shows no sign of relenting; it was also recently announced that Sex and the City star Sara Jessica Parker plans to launch her own line of wines, an area Donald Trump has already explored with his range of Trump Wine.

However, one aspect to note on these launches is that the vast majority sit in the mass-luxury market segment. That is, not so mainstream that they’re not Instagram fodder, but not so expensive as to be unattainable for the majority of consumers.

Product pricing is key

So does this mean that stars are worried their appeal only stretches to a certain budget? The answer is somewhat yes. While consumers are keen to experiment with new brands, and this is only strengthened when a global star such as David Beckham is involved, price sensitivity will increase past a certain point. Take a £40 blended whisky owned by a major star, this is going to attract attention and is affordable enough to stimulate impulse purchases, whilst a £160 Scotch whisky, on the other hand, is a very different proposition, with this price range being seen as something to work towards and to research pre-purchase.

Celebrity spirits have mass appeal, but newly launched brands must pick their price point carefully. Competition with established super premium brands is a tough proposition, and celebrity appeal will only take you so far. Mass-luxury is the key target for these celebrity brands, and the aspired to by all, affordable by most will only increase the Instagram-ready nature of these spirits.
