Justin Bieber Escapes From His Box And Scares The Hell Out Of David Beckham
Fresh off watching his Inter Miami franchise lose its inaugural match to LAFC at Banc of California Stadium back on March 1, the legend that is David Beckham made an appearance on Ellen to chat about his wife, kids, club ownership and the time he went trick-or-treating at Justin Bieber’s house.
Perhaps avoiding news of slow sales for his upcoming "Changes" tour, the 26-year-old Canadian musician was entombed in a box next to Beckham and Ellen DeGeneres the whole time!
Upon hearing that Beckham neglected to name his youngest child after him, Justin — who was presumably in the box mumbling “that yummy, yum, that yummy, yummy, yeah, you got that yummy, yum, that yummy, yum, that yummy, yummy” for the previous six minutes — was summoned from his eternal resting place and gave old Golden Balls the fright of his life.
Later on, Beckham talked about how he’s enjoying his role as part-owner of Inter Miami while also seeing the impact of his time spent in MLS.
“It was just about giving back,” Beckham said. “Yesterday when I was in the stadium for our first game it just really felt that this was the moment that I’d always wanted. I had young kids coming up to me, boys and girls, saying: ‘The reason why we play this game is because you came to America.’
“And that’s what I always wanted from coming to America. Obviously I wanted to win championships, but more importantly I wanted to provide something that most places that I’ve played in have — a real kind of legacy and a real opportunity for children to play this great game.”
Beckham also says that his feet have grown since his playing days, going from a size 9 and 3/4 to a size 11. This might sound strange, but Beckham is 44 now, and as we age, the tendons and ligaments that link the bones in our feet lose elasticity. Our feet then become longer and wider, and feet can grow as much as a half size every decade after the age of 40.
Beckham’s just ahead of the curve here, and he’s looking at clown-size feet by the age of 75.

Santa Clara County bans gatherings of 1,000-plus after first death
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The status of three San Jose Sharks hockey games, the NCAA women's basketball tournament at Stanford and one MLS game are in doubt after Santa Clara County announced a ban of all large gatherings of at least 1,000 people for the rest of the month in response to the coronavirus outbreak.
The announcement Monday came hours after the public health department announced the first death in the county from COVID-19. A woman in her 60s had been hospitalized for several weeks with the virus before dying. The ban will go into effect at midnight PT on March 11, and will last at least three weeks -- or until April 1.
Six more cases of the coronavirus were confirmed in Santa Clara County on Monday, bringing the total number of cases to 43.

Leagues close locker rooms over virus concerns
"Today's order and new recommendations will reduce the number of people who develop severe illness and will help prevent our healthcare system from becoming overwhelmed," said Dr. Sara Cody, Santa Clara County Health Officer. "This is critically important for anyone with healthcare needs, not just those most vulnerable to serious illness from COVID-19."
For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
The vast majority of people recover from the new virus. According to the World Health Organization, people with mild illness recover in about two weeks, while those with more severe illness may take three to six weeks to recover. In mainland China, where the virus first exploded, more than 80,000 people have been diagnosed and more than 58,000 have so far recovered.
The Sharks have home games scheduled for March 19 against Montreal, March 21 against Boston and March 29 against Arizona.
There are no events scheduled at the SAP Center until a minor league hockey game on March 17. The team said it will abide by the order and is determining how to proceed.
"We will be reviewing each scheduled event due to take place for the rest of the month and provide an update in the coming days," the team said in a statement. "We appreciate the understanding and patience of our fans, guests and partners during this unprecedented time."
The team could play the games without fans, find a neutral site or play the games on the road.
"I don't think it would make a huge difference but it would be kind of weird because it would be really, really, quiet," Sharks goalie Aaron Dell said this weekend about the prospect of playing games without fans. "But if that's what they have to do, that's what they have to do."
The Stanford women's basketball team is expected to host the opening weekend of the NCAA tournament from March 20-22. Stanford is scheduled to host games in several other sports this month and the school said Monday night that all events remain scheduled as of now.
The San Jose Earthquakes have one home game scheduled this month on March 21 against Sporting Kansas City. The team didn't immediately respond to comment about plans for that game.
SUBMIT YOUR NOMINATIONS FOR THE INAUGURAL CLASS OF ROWDIES LEGENDS FLAIR!!!
Mod News
Hello all,
Did a little bit of cleaning up around the place to reset for the new season. All of of the new crests around the league are in and the new roster is now loaded for flair selection.
A little bit into last year, someone suggested the idea of having some "Rowdies Legends" flair (sorry, can't remember who said it). In the selection screen you'll see that none other, but all-time scoring leader Georgi Hristov has already been added.
Georgi needs some company, so here's what we're going to do. This year we're going to nominate THREE former Rowdies into our inaugural "Rowdies Legends" class. Use this thread to nominate and make the case for your favorites below.
In a week or so, after we've had our nominations filled up, I'll start a voting thread. Top 3 vote getters make the 2020 class.
So, have at it. Which Rowdies legends would you make your case for?

THE PROJECTIONS SAY WE’RE IN FOR A TIGHT RACE AT THE TOP AS CONTENDERS LOOK TO TOPPLE LOUISVILLE CITY FC
A compelling, multi-team race for the top spot in the 2019 Eastern Conference standings culminated in celebrations at Highmark Stadium, where Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC stood tallest following an impressive 8-0-3 finish to the season.
Unfortunately for the Hounds, and everyone else in the East’s postseason field, when the playoffs finally arrived, so did a predictable outcome as Louisville City – for the third consecutive season – reached the USL Championship Final.
LouCity’s quest to become the first side to claim three Championship titles came up short against Real Monarchs SLC, but Head Coach John Hackworth’s side is among the favorites once again as the club gets set to move into a new 11,700-seat Lynn Family Stadium in April. Familiar faces, including LIPAFC rival Indy Eleven and the Tampa Bay Rowdies should be leading challengers alongside the Hounds.
The wild card could be Championship newcomer Miami FC, however, which enters with its own history of success it will be looking to replicate in its new surroundings.
In field packed with talent and parity, we take a look at what to expect from the 2020 Eastern Conference.
New York Red Bulls II
Head Coach: John Wolyniec
Venue: MSU Soccer Park
FiveThirtyEight.com Playoff Odds: 43 percent
FiveThirtyEight.com Projection: 12th place, 41pts, -10 goal differential
MURRAY
The New York Red Bulls II put together another sterling regular season, but a late-season slide carried over into the playoffs where they were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals for the first time, breaking a streak of three consecutive trips to the Eastern Conference Final. As is usually the case, the offseason has brought changes for Head Coach John Wolyniec between a combination of players being signed to MLS deals – 2019 Championship All-League selections Jared Stroud and Chris Lema – and others moving on, including goalkeeper Evan Louro and Jordan Scarlett to the Tampa Bay Rowdies. These are the Red Bulls II, though, and while their projection might not be great this preseason, it’s likely they’ll find a way to keep their streak of playoff participation intact come the end of the season.
Player to Watch
Omar Sowe – Midfielder
When Omar Sowe signed professional terms with the Red Bulls II last August, according to the New Jersey Star-Ledger he became the first player from Harrison High School to join the professional ranks in more than four decades. After scoring two goals in six appearances down the stretch for New York last season, the 19-year-old Gambian-American will enter his first full season at the club looking to make a serious impact and continue a rapid upward trajectory within the club’s development system while also driving the side back toward the postseason for a sixth consecutive year.
Tampa Bay Rowdies
Head Coach: Neill Collins
Venue: Al Lang Stadium
FiveThirtyEight.com Playoff Odds: 93 percent
FiveThirtyEight.com Projection: 3rd place, 61pts, +23 goal differential
MURRAY
The Rowdies opened the 2019 season in tremendous fashion, going 13 games without defeat to sit on top of the Eastern Conference. As the season wore on, though, the cracks started to appear, especially in defense, where the side recorded only two shutouts in the second half of the season. After sliding to fifth place in the regular season and elimination from the playoffs by Louisville City FC, Tampa Bay will have an all-new look for 2020 with the arrival of defensive centerpiece Forrest Lasso to lead other newcomers including goalkeeper Evan Louro and defenders Aaron Guillen, Jordan Scarlett and Mustapha Dumbuya. With a hold of solid attacking pieces returning, including Championship All-League selection Sebastian Guenzatti, the Rowdies have the look of a title contender going into the new campaign.
Player to Watch
Sebastian Guenzatti – Forward
Stepping into a leading role for the first time since arriving in Tampa Bay in 2017, Guenzatti rewarded the faith of the Rowdies’ coaching staff with a career year. His 19 goals across the regular season and playoffs placed him tied for third in the Championship and earned Championship All-League Second Team honors. Now all eyes will be on the 28-year-old as he looks to produce an encore and provide enough of the goals the Rowdies will need to compete with the best in the Eastern Conference.
Rowdies Get The Big Apple Off Their Back, Best NYRB II In Opener
For the fourth straight season, the Tampa Bay Rowdies have started the USL Championship year off with a win.
This year’s 1-0 road victory against the New York Red Bulls II has a little extra meaning, though. The Rowdies had lost out in all three of their prior trips to face NYRB II. In fact, the club’s struggles on the road against New York-based teams in the modern era also extends to their days in the NASL, where they failed to post a win in six tries against the Cosmos.
Besides the fact that Tampa Bay and New York teams hating each other is well-honored tradition across several sports, the New York-based soccer teams also always seem to be at the top of their respective leagues So it may seem small in the grand scheme, but it’s not a insignificant thing for Neill Collins to be the first coach to lead the Rowdies to a road victory against a New York team in the modern era.
“I’d be lying if I wasn’t aware of that, because I was,” Collins said. “I’ve had so many frustrating trips to New York, as a player and as a coach. I didn’t mention it to the players beforehand because these players were hyped and ready to go and excited for the start to the season. They don’t need to know about what previous teams’ failures were. That’s not on them. But now they’ve come here and won. That’s a great start.”
Collins’ starting lineup featured seven of the club’s offseason signings, including former NYRB II members Jordan Scarlett and Evan Louro. Scarlett got the starting nod as one the three center backs after sitting much of the preseason with an injury. Scarlett didn’t miss a beat against his former side and neither did Louro, who stymied NYRB II with a point-blank save in the 73rd minute as the Rowdies tried to protect the narrow lead.
“I’m pleased for Evan and Jordan particularly to come back here and get a clean sheet because it’s not easy having to come straight back to a club you spent so long at,” Collins noted. “That psychologically can be tough and they both handled it really well.”
One of the club’s other new additions, forward Kyle Murphy, was forced to exit only 30 minutes into the match with a groin injury. Panamanian dynamo Juan Tejada came off the bench to replace Murphy as the second forward alongside Sebastian Guenzatti. As usual, Tejada was a menace to opposing defense, pressing and running down balls in NYRB II’s half at every chance. Eventually forward Lucky Mkosana came on late to close the match out.
“You don’t want to have to make a change as early as that. I think Kyle and Seba were linking up well. It’s a game that was meant for Kyle. His ability to hurt people in behind, but also the physical aspect he brings,” Collins said. “But to be able to bring on Juan Tejada and keep Lucky on the bench until late are great options to have… It’s something that we don’t want to have to do too often but the players adapted. We looked really fit. We didn’t have to take anyone off cause they weren’t fit. It was just tactical changes that we made from that point on.”
After a scoreless 56 minutes, returning Rowdie Leo Fernandes produced the winner through some smart play with midfielder Zach Steinberger. From the left flank, Fernandes passed to Zach Steinberger inside the box. While Steinberger drew in defenders and moved toward the endline, Fernandes continued his run and eventually drifted to find a window of space by the six-yard box. Steinberger cut his pass back to Fernandes, who fired a shot to the far post before the defenders could close him down.
Fernandes happened to do this in front of a large cheering section of family and friends that had camped out on top of the parking garage next to the field to watch the Long Island native take on NYRB II. The group predictably went wild in celebration.
“Yeah, my family travels well,” Fernandes joked. “I definitely wasn’t saving that goal to score in front of them. Just wanna score whenever I can. It was a big win, especially for the first game of the year, against this team. It means a lot. Zach played a good ball. As soon as I got it I just tried to turn to put it on target as quick as I can and aim for the other side of the post.”
Just five minutes after his goal Fernandes nearly doubled the lead when he placed a curling strike from outside the box directly into the far post. The rebound fell for Tejada to direct into the net, but he had been in an offside position when the shot was taken so the goal was waived off.
“The second half was a bit more quality, a bit more belief in ourselves in the final third. Once they got the goal the belief started through the team. From that point on we created more chances, looked good,” Collins said.
The Rowdies weathered the storm in the late stages as NYRB II piled on the pressure to find an equalizer. Scarlett and his center back partners Forrest Lasso and Aaron Guillen put in sturdy performances for much of the afternoon. Fernandes and right wing back Mustapha Dumbaya also pitched in at the back to keep NYRB II off the board.
“I think today it was about character,” Collins said. “Character is a big part of why we signed two or three of these guys. Their willingness to just gut it out, dig in, just defend that goal as if their life depended on it. That’s what we were looking to add, a little bit of that resilience. They definitely did that today but there’s definitely aspects as well I want us to improve. I’m sure every team across the league will be feeling that after the first game of the season.”

Every Sports Mogul Needs David Beckham's Custom Tudor Watch
Welcome to (Inter) Miami, bienvenidos a (Inter) Miami
A 0-1 loss to Los Angeles FC won't deter David Beckham. Oh no. His big 'soccer' baby has been six years in the womb, and a disappointing debut doesn't necessarily mean a disappointing season ahead. They've got a very nice logo, for one. Qatar signed a comically vast £180 million sponsorship deal last month. And lest we forget that Beckham – a Golden Boot with menswear classics – is the ultimate BIG SPORTS mogul. He's got the watch to prove it.
At Inter Miami's last training session, the 44-year-old talked tactics and looked all concerned in a custom-built Tudor Pelagos. Long an ambassador for the outdoors-geared marque (which only saw a return to the market in 2013 following a hiatus), the piece itself is the sort of quieter dive piece that Tudor does so well: functional, robust, but not quite the gold-gilded arm cannon that really has no place splashing around in the deep end.
It should be on the side of a football pitch instead. That's because the Pelagos clocks in at a noticeable 42mm – large enough to pop below the cuff of a tracksuit or hoody – with a black dial, ceramic bezel and a final kiss of the fingers in an Inter Miami crest replacing the usual Tudor branding at 6 o'clock.
The entire design is often seen as a mark two of the Black Bay: another dive watch stablemate, just without the technical pedigree of the Pelagos. For inside, you've got an MT5612 calibre (a movement exclusive to Tudor) instead of a regular ETA movement, and a pretty special helium escape valve which is telling of the marque's dedication to making watches that are fit-for-purpose, in addition to peak physical fitness.
Because the Tudor Pelagos is as quietly handsome as you'll get. It's shiny, yes. But a degree subtler than big bougie gold watches thanks to its titanium construction. It's technical, too. But with a relatively uncluttered dial that swerves complexity (or, worse, being over-engineered). All that makes for the perfect sports mogul watch, the sort of canonised big leaguer that knows a thing or two about Swiss horology seeing as he's on his 104th fancy piece.
Granted, a win in the MLS is probably the best way to portray yourself as a co-owner wonder proper. But a custom Tudor watch is a kick in the right direction.

Is Major League Baseball sabotaging the Tampa Bay market by continuing to push a St. Petersburg-Montreal home games in two cities plan? MLB is telling Tampa Bay area business leaders your market is not good enough for us and there could be a backlash because it is corporate support and not fans that is the economic engine that fuels teams in all sports. Tampa Bay Rays owner Stu Sternburg is convinced Montreal is a good part-time market but not full-time home for his team. St. Petersburg, Florida Mayor Rick Kriseman said that the team must play every home game scheduled in St. Petersburg through the 2027 season. The planned move of Rays’ summer home games to Montreal beginning in 2024 is on hold for now. The franchise is now scheduled to play out the last eight years of a 30-year lease in St. Petersburg. Major League Baseball wants to get back into the Montreal market. Sternberg is convinced that Montreal is a good part-time market despite the fact that the Canadian dollar has been hanging around 76 cents US for quite a while. MLB does business in American greenbacks.
Sternberg had an opportunity to change the terms of the St. Petersburg lease had he secured funding for a baseball park in Tampa. In 2018, Rays’ owners had plans to build a park in Ybor City. That fell through. What happens next is anybody’s guess other than the Rays will be financially challenged. Tampa Bay’s business community could have second thoughts about supporting the franchise whose owners are not convinced Tampa Bay is a good market. If the corporate community walks away, that would destroy the Rays business. MLB’s might be hoping its split home games threat will result in a getting stadium plan approved somewhere in the Tampa Bay market.

MONTCLAIR, N.J. — A familiar name to Cosmos fans sent the Red Bulls II to its first loss of the USL Championship season on Saturday.
Leo Fernandes, who was the North American Soccer League young player of the year when he played with the Cosmos in 2015, scored in the 59th minute to lead the Tampa Bay Rowdies to a 1-0 win over Red Bulls II at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday.
Fernandes converted a Zach Steinberger pass in the season opener for both sides before 1,002 spectators.
Joseph Fala, Wallis Lapsley, Samad Bounthong and Mandela Egbo made their NYRB II debuts.
Roy Boateng made his first career start before departing for Preston Kilwein in the 22nd minute.
In his first professional start in goal , Lapsley made two saves.

Ball kids to wear gloves, not touch towels at Indian Wells
Tennis players at the BNP Paribas Open that starts next week will have to manage their own towels on court and ball kids will wear gloves while working matches at the combined men's and women's tournament in the Southern California desert.
The measures were announced Friday by tournament organizers, who are offering fans uneasy about the coronavirus a refund for this year's event or a credit for next year. The event runs March 11-22.
Major League Soccer celebrates its 25th season. Two expansion teams join the league as it kicks off its 2020 season (Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC), bringing the number of clubs to 26. MLS will also add a pair of teams in each of the next two years (Austin and Charlotte in 2021, St. Louis and Sacramento in 2022) increasing the total number of MLS franchises to 30 by 2022 – three times the number it fielded 2002-2004. America’s top pro soccer league is growing rapidly. Larry Berg, lead owner of LAFC, the league’s most valuable team (at $700 million per the Los Angeles Times), suggested the league could surpass both MLB and the NHL, in terms of popularity, within the next decade. MLS has been an undeniable success in cities like Atlanta, Portland, and L.A., but the league continues to lack relevance amongst fans in legacy markets like Houston, Dallas, and Denver. MLS Commissioner Don Garber says that turning around struggling clubs in major markets is among his top goals for 2020, along with continuing to grow the fan base, driving new commercial revenue, and positioning the league to cash in on its next media deal.
Coronavirus and sports: NBA, baseball, MLS considering restrictions
MLB added that it has not made changes to media access procedures yet, though it confirmed it was discussing “additional measures" with other leagues. MLS is expected to have some limits on access this weekend, but no NHL or NBA teams are working under a league mandate to change pregame or postgame procedures. However, some NHL clubs did not have postgame locker room access Saturday.

March 6, 2020 - The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg doesn't expect any disruptions to the March 13-March 15 race activities, but organizers are taking extra precautions due to concerns about coronavirus. Organizers are asking everyone associated with the event to follow basic hygiene precautions as recommended by the CDC, such as frequent hand-washing, use of hand sanitizer and covering coughs and sneezes appropriately. Organizers said they have added additional hand sanitizer and hand soap washing units placed throughout the event site to assist with these hygiene precautions, and are implementing increased cleaning measures including disinfecting handrails and surfaces numerous times throughout the day. Race organizers also said they are actively monitoring health agency alerts and are working with the City of St. Petersburg. Mayor Rick Kriseman told the St. Pete Catalyst earlier this week that the city is doing everything it can to be prepared.

Six big questions for the USL East: Top-heaviness, Miami’s chances, more
This is the second in a two-part series previewing the upcoming USL season. We covered the Western Conference here.
For most of the modern USL era (2011-present), the East has reigned supreme — boasting seven of the last nine champions. In 2020, with a larger roster of MLS affiliates and some of the strongest independent clubs, the East continues to be an intriguing mix.
Still, we have some questions before the new season gets underway.
Are the conference’s top teams even better than last year?
Of the six best teams in all of USL last season, you could make the case that five of them were in the East. With Nashville SC off to MLS, the conference still has three teams worthy of carrying the “favorite” moniker — and a fourth who should never be written off entirely.

BOLD FC NOTCHES HOME WIN AGAINST NEW MEXICO; TAMPA BAY, COLORADO SPRINGS WIN ON ROAD
NEW YORK RED BULLS II (0), TAMPA BAY ROWDIES (1)
MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Rowdies claimed their first points at MSU Soccer Park in the club’s history as Leo Fernandes’ second-half goal earned the victory against the Red Bulls II.
Tampa Bay’s Sebastian Guenzatti missed out on a chance to give the visitors the lead midway through the first half on a breakaway, but the Rowdies took the lead in the 57th minute as Zach Steinberger’s cutback from the left byline found Fernandes, who poked home a finish from the top of the six-yard area.
The Rowdies thought they had doubled their lead in the 62nd minute when Juan Tejada put home the rebound off a shot by Fernandes that rang off the right post, only for the offside flag to be raised. The Red Bulls II then carved out a big chance as Jared Stroud found space on the left and delivered a back-post cross for Sebastian Elney that was turned away by Louro, while Tampa Bay’s Aaron Guillen also failed to capitalize on a breakaway late on that could have put the game away. Fernandes’ goal proved enough, however, as the Rowdies’ defense earned a road shutout to start the season.

Netflix’s New Historical Drama Charts The Origins Of The Beautiful Game
'THE ENGLISH GAME' IS FROM THE CREATOR OF 'DOWNTON ABBEY.'
In terms of historical dramas, Downton Abbey is one of the most critically acclaimed English-language TV shows of all time. The multiple award-winning series was created by Julian Fellowes, and his latest project — The English Game — is set to be released through Netflix on Friday, March 20 (the same day as the Ultras movie).
The six-part drama will chart the origins of football in Northern England in the mid-1800s with Edward Holcroft (the Kingsman franchise) playing Arthur Kinnaird (player turned president of the FA for 33 years) and Kevin Guthrie (Sunshine on Leith) playing the role of Fergus Suter (the first professional footballer).
“There’s a certain passing of the baton from Kinnaird, who’s slightly towards the end of his career, to a boy (Suter) that he sees is going to take the game where it needs to go,” Holcroft explained. “Kinnaird sees the vision. He says to his players and friends, ‘You don’t see this. This is where the game has to go — the passing game. It’s beautiful. They need to play it, and we need to help them.’ It’s that recognition in one another, I think, that makes them so special.”
Amidst the backdrop of social changes in Britain and changes on the pitch, Fellowes is hoping to capture how those involved in the creation of the sport reached across the class divide to establish football as the world’s most popular game.
“He did really change the game, Fergus Suter,” Fellowes said. “He brought the passing game down into England, but before, football was much nearer to rugby. And they played quite violently.
