RIP Tampa Bay Mutiny

DannyTRadio

The Tampa Bay Rowdies were one of the most successful clubs in the old NASL in the 70s and 80s.  So naturally, when MLS started, Tampa Bay seemed like a prime candidate for a team.  However with the Mutiny, things didn't exactly work out.'

What happened and why did the Mutiny fail?  This is that story.

*At 4:28 in the video, I stated that the Mutiny lost 10 players to the dispersal draft.  This came from a quote from then president Nick Sakiewicz.  Although, I cannot find what players were taken.  I do know that three were taken in the expansion draft, Nelson Vargas, Cle Kooiman, and Scott Budnick.

Source of quote: https://www.brotherlygame.com/2014/2/5/5380052/the-forgotten-story-of-the-tampa-bay-mutiny

** On a Facebook post regarding this topic, a former intern, Glenn Maddock, shared the following info:

"You know we didn't know about the team name or branding, when we launched, that was sprung on us by Nike & MLS officials who did whatever Nike said in those days. Their idea was to appeal to kids into video games. It was a cyber mutant, like from a video game. Mutiny was a play on the Bucs name, but we nixed the mascots, because it was so stupid, and the staff almost mutinied when Nike showed us the new kits. Nobody in the local soccer community could understand why we weren't the Rowdies again. But MLS was scared of any links to the failed NASL, and wanted total fresh start. Proved big mistake, as we've seen now in Seattle, Vancouver, Portland, San Jose. Fans love legacy & history. Orlando learned from Mutiny mistakes, and did it right."

The Forgotten Story of the Tampa Bay Mutiny

With all of the fanfare from MLS around Orlando City joining the league and David Beckham's team in Miami, it bears remembering that before all of this, there was the Tampa Bay Mutiny.

#MLS2StPete - The Rowdies vs. The Mutiny

Jonathan Arnholz

On May 2, 2017, Tampa Bay took a step forward in its bid to join Major League Soccer when residents of St. Petersburg, FL voted overwhelmingly in favor of allowing the St. Pete government to negotiate with Tampa Bay Rowdies owner Bill Edwards on a lease extension vital to the team's plans to expand Al Lang Stadium should the region be awarded a slot in MLS' league expansion.

With the #MLS2StPete movement earning a major victory, many critics point to the failure of original MLS team Tampa Bay Mutiny (1996-2001) as a sign that Tampa Bay can't support a top-tier soccer team. This video analyzes the struggles the Mutiny faced and how the current Rowdies bid has turned those weaknesses into strengths.

Cigar Industry

Florida's Grown

The Sunshine State was once a major grower of cigar tobacco and the cigarmaking capital of America. Today, two companies are determined to restore the state’s cigar heritage

Cigar retailer turned tobacco farmer Jeff Borysiewicz has dreams of making Florida a tobacco state once again.

Driving through Clermont, Florida, on a crisp spring morning in his pickup truck, Jeff Borysiewicz steals another look at his phone and furrows his brow. He’s worried. It’s perhaps the third time he’s checked his mobile device since leaving his Corona Cigar Co. superstore on Sand Road in Orlando 30 minutes ago. Borysiewicz isn’t concerned about traffic. Rather, he’s uneasy over the 10 to 15 mile per hour easterly wind and overnight temperatures that dipped to almost 40 degrees Fahrenheit, cool for this time of year.

Thank you for opening my eyes to what's happening right under my smoke-filled nose. I was curious about the connection between JC Newman (I love the Quorum maduro, one of my go-tos), Drew Estate's FSG (a delicious cigar!) and the new object of my bro-mance--Jeff Borysiewicz. Can't wait to try "The American." Thanks for the timely report, with a tantalizing amount of history thrown in for us buffs.

Sundays With Mike: Defunct sports leagues

---The North American Soccer League: Remember when pro soccer was going to dominate U.S. professional sports? Yep, that was the prediction in 1968, when the NASL burst onto the scene. For a while, it gathered momentum--especially when Brazilian soccer superstar Pele' joined the New York Cosmos in 1975. But, interest in the league waned after Pele's retirement two years later. Burdened by over expansion in cities such as San Antonio, Memphis and Tulsa--Tulsa?--the NASL finally folded in 1984.

2020 Championship Preview – Eastern Conference

THE PROJECTIONS SAY WE’RE IN FOR A TIGHT RACE AT THE TOP AS CONTENDERS LOOK TO TOPPLE LOUISVILLE CITY FC

A compelling, multi-team race for the top spot in the 2019 Eastern Conference standings culminated in celebrations at Highmark Stadium, where Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC stood tallest following an impressive 8-0-3 finish to the season.

Unfortunately for the Hounds, and everyone else in the East’s postseason field, when the playoffs finally arrived, so did a predictable outcome as Louisville City – for the third consecutive season – reached the USL Championship Final.

LouCity’s quest to become the first side to claim three Championship titles came up short against Real Monarchs SLC, but Head Coach John Hackworth’s side is among the favorites once again as the club gets set to move into a new 11,700-seat Lynn Family Stadium in April. Familiar faces, including LIPAFC rival Indy Eleven and the Tampa Bay Rowdies should be leading challengers alongside the Hounds.

The wild card could be Championship newcomer Miami FC, however, which enters with its own history of success it will be looking to replicate in its new surroundings.

In field packed with talent and parity, we take a look at what to expect from the 2020 Eastern Conference.

Tampa Bay Rowdies
Head Coach: Neill Collins
Venue: Al Lang Stadium
FiveThirtyEight.com Playoff Odds: 93 percent
FiveThirtyEight.com Projection: 3rd place, 61pts, +23 goal differential

MURRAY

The Rowdies opened the 2019 season in tremendous fashion, going 13 games without defeat to sit on top of the Eastern Conference. As the season wore on, though, the cracks started to appear, especially in defense, where the side recorded only two shutouts in the second half of the season. After sliding to fifth place in the regular season and elimination from the playoffs by Louisville City FC, Tampa Bay will have an all-new look for 2020 with the arrival of defensive centerpiece Forrest Lasso to lead other newcomers including goalkeeper Evan Louro and defenders Aaron Guillen, Jordan Scarlett and Mustapha Dumbuya. With a hold of solid attacking pieces returning, including Championship All-League selection Sebastian Guenzatti, the Rowdies have the look of a title contender going into the new campaign.

Player to Watch

Sebastian Guenzatti – Forward

Stepping into a leading role for the first time since arriving in Tampa Bay in 2017, Guenzatti rewarded the faith of the Rowdies’ coaching staff with a career year. His 19 goals across the regular season and playoffs placed him tied for third in the Championship and earned Championship All-League Second Team honors. Now all eyes will be on the 28-year-old as he looks to produce an encore and provide enough of the goals the Rowdies will need to compete with the best in the Eastern Conference.

Lawrenson was asked about the future of Tottenham Hotspur striker Troy Parrott, with the Irish media unsurprisingly interested in the teenager’s situation at Spurs.

10 Goalkeepers to Watch in the 2020 Championship Season

WHICH SHOT-STOPPERS SHOULD HAVE YOUR ATTENTION THROUGHOUT THE NEW CAMPAIGN?

Tampa Bay Rowdies

Evan Louro

After 11 years as part of the New York Red Bulls organization, having joined the club’s academy in 2008, Evan Louro brought his stellar resume to the Rowdies this offseason, where he should take over from the departed John McCarthy – departed for Inter Miami FC – as the club’s new start. The numbers Louro put up in the Red Bulls II’s high-pressure system might not jump off the page – he recorded a 63.1 save percentage and a 1.65 goals-against average in 79 appearances in the Championship – but one thing the 24-year-old consistently showed was the ability to make key stops when they matter. The Rowdies experienced that up close in a six-save performance that allowed New York to eliminate them from the 2018 USL Championship Playoffs, and in Louro’s 3-1-1 overall record against Tampa Bay in his career. A stronger defensive structure in front of him should allow Louro’s numbers to rise, while his presence could allow Tampa Bay to make a serious title run.

BROWARD COUNTY

Inter Miami Will Not Make Fort Lauderdale Their Permanent Home: MLS Commissioner

The proposed stadium inside Miami’s Freedom Park has been the source of battles between politicians and leaders in both the city of Miami and Miami-Dade County

Inter Miami CF will play their first home game of their inaugural 2020 season in just under two weeks – but it won’t be in the city they are named for, but instead inside of a stadium in Fort Lauderdale originally intended to be the site of their training program and teams.

According to the commissioner of the league they play in, fans shouldn’t get used to that.

Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber told the Miami Herald on Sunday that plans remain in place for the team to eventually play their games at a permanent home on the current site of the Melreese Country Club near Miami International Airport.

California Man Gets More Than 5 Years in Prison for Harassing Parkland Victims
“They’re going to play [in Fort Lauderdale] as long as they have to, but they are not going to stay in Fort Lauderdale,” Garber said before the team’s inaugural game against Los Angeles FC.  “There will come a time where we’re going to have to push the envelope and get that deal finalized.”

The proposed stadium inside Miami’s Freedom Park has been the source of battles between politicians and leaders in both the city of Miami and Miami-Dade County – with a potential opening in the 2022 season still up in the air.

“The training environment is state of the art, absolutely awe-inspiring,” Garber said when describing the facility located at the former site of Lockhart Stadium and Fort Lauderdale Stadium. “They need to move out of there, get their academy programs and USL teams playing there and they need to get downtown.”

Inter Miami will play their first game in South Florida on March 14th when they host the Los Angeles Galaxy – one of the former teams that current Inter Miami owner David Beckham played for during his legendary soccer career.
