SUBMIT YOUR NOMINATIONS FOR THE INAUGURAL CLASS OF ROWDIES LEGENDS FLAIR!!!

Mod News

Hello all,

Did a little bit of cleaning up around the place to reset for the new season. All of of the new crests around the league are in and the new roster is now loaded for flair selection.

A little bit into last year, someone suggested the idea of having some "Rowdies Legends" flair (sorry, can't remember who said it). In the selection screen you'll see that none other, but all-time scoring leader Georgi Hristov has already been added.

Georgi needs some company, so here's what we're going to do. This year we're going to nominate THREE former Rowdies into our inaugural "Rowdies Legends" class. Use this thread to nominate and make the case for your favorites below.

In a week or so, after we've had our nominations filled up, I'll start a voting thread. Top 3 vote getters make the 2020 class.

So, have at it. Which Rowdies legends would you make your case for?

2020 Championship Preview – Eastern Conference

THE PROJECTIONS SAY WE’RE IN FOR A TIGHT RACE AT THE TOP AS CONTENDERS LOOK TO TOPPLE LOUISVILLE CITY FC
A compelling, multi-team race for the top spot in the 2019 Eastern Conference standings culminated in celebrations at Highmark Stadium, where Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC stood tallest following an impressive 8-0-3 finish to the season.

Unfortunately for the Hounds, and everyone else in the East’s postseason field, when the playoffs finally arrived, so did a predictable outcome as Louisville City – for the third consecutive season – reached the USL Championship Final.

LouCity’s quest to become the first side to claim three Championship titles came up short against Real Monarchs SLC, but Head Coach John Hackworth’s side is among the favorites once again as the club gets set to move into a new 11,700-seat Lynn Family Stadium in April. Familiar faces, including LIPAFC rival Indy Eleven and the Tampa Bay Rowdies should be leading challengers alongside the Hounds.

The wild card could be Championship newcomer Miami FC, however, which enters with its own history of success it will be looking to replicate in its new surroundings.

In field packed with talent and parity, we take a look at what to expect from the 2020 Eastern Conference.

New York Red Bulls II
Head Coach: John Wolyniec
Venue: MSU Soccer Park
FiveThirtyEight.com Playoff Odds: 43 percent
FiveThirtyEight.com Projection: 12th place, 41pts, -10 goal differential

MURRAY

The New York Red Bulls II put together another sterling regular season, but a late-season slide carried over into the playoffs where they were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals for the first time, breaking a streak of three consecutive trips to the Eastern Conference Final. As is usually the case, the offseason has brought changes for Head Coach John Wolyniec between a combination of players being signed to MLS deals – 2019 Championship All-League selections Jared Stroud and Chris Lema – and others moving on, including goalkeeper Evan Louro and Jordan Scarlett to the Tampa Bay Rowdies. These are the Red Bulls II, though, and while their projection might not be great this preseason, it’s likely they’ll find a way to keep their streak of playoff participation intact come the end of the season.

Player to Watch

Omar Sowe – Midfielder

When Omar Sowe signed professional terms with the Red Bulls II last August, according to the New Jersey Star-Ledger he became the first player from Harrison High School to join the professional ranks in more than four decades. After scoring two goals in six appearances down the stretch for New York last season, the 19-year-old Gambian-American will enter his first full season at the club looking to make a serious impact and continue a rapid upward trajectory within the club’s development system while also driving the side back toward the postseason for a sixth consecutive year.

Tampa Bay Rowdies

Head Coach: Neill Collins
Venue: Al Lang Stadium
FiveThirtyEight.com Playoff Odds: 93 percent
FiveThirtyEight.com Projection: 3rd place, 61pts, +23 goal differential

MURRAY

The Rowdies opened the 2019 season in tremendous fashion, going 13 games without defeat to sit on top of the Eastern Conference. As the season wore on, though, the cracks started to appear, especially in defense, where the side recorded only two shutouts in the second half of the season. After sliding to fifth place in the regular season and elimination from the playoffs by Louisville City FC, Tampa Bay will have an all-new look for 2020 with the arrival of defensive centerpiece Forrest Lasso to lead other newcomers including goalkeeper Evan Louro and defenders Aaron Guillen, Jordan Scarlett and Mustapha Dumbuya. With a hold of solid attacking pieces returning, including Championship All-League selection Sebastian Guenzatti, the Rowdies have the look of a title contender going into the new campaign.

Player to Watch

Sebastian Guenzatti – Forward

Stepping into a leading role for the first time since arriving in Tampa Bay in 2017, Guenzatti rewarded the faith of the Rowdies’ coaching staff with a career year. His 19 goals across the regular season and playoffs placed him tied for third in the Championship and earned Championship All-League Second Team honors. Now all eyes will be on the 28-year-old as he looks to produce an encore and provide enough of the goals the Rowdies will need to compete with the best in the Eastern Conference.

Rowdies Get The Big Apple Off Their Back, Best NYRB II In Opener

For the fourth straight season, the Tampa Bay Rowdies have started the USL Championship year off with a win.

This year’s 1-0 road victory against the New York Red Bulls II has a little extra meaning, though. The Rowdies had lost out in all three of their prior trips to face NYRB II. In fact, the club’s struggles on the road against New York-based teams in the modern era also extends to their days in the NASL, where they failed to post a win in six tries against the Cosmos.

Besides the fact that Tampa Bay and New York teams hating each other is well-honored tradition across several sports, the New York-based soccer teams also always seem to be at the top of their respective leagues So it may seem small in the grand scheme, but it’s not a insignificant thing for Neill Collins to be the first coach to lead the Rowdies to a road victory against a New York team in the modern era.

“I’d be lying if I wasn’t aware of that, because I was,” Collins said. “I’ve had so many frustrating trips to New York, as a player and as a coach. I didn’t mention it to the players beforehand because these players were hyped and ready to go and excited for the start to the season. They don’t need to know about what previous teams’ failures were. That’s not on them. But now they’ve come here and won. That’s a great start.”

Collins’ starting lineup featured seven of the club’s offseason signings, including former NYRB II members Jordan Scarlett and Evan Louro. Scarlett got the starting nod as one the three center backs after sitting much of the preseason with an injury. Scarlett didn’t miss a beat against his former side and neither did Louro, who stymied NYRB II with a point-blank save in the 73rd minute as the Rowdies tried to protect the narrow lead.

“I’m pleased for Evan and Jordan particularly to come back here and get a clean sheet because it’s not easy having to come straight back to a club you spent so long at,” Collins noted. “That psychologically can be tough and they both handled it really well.”

One of the club’s other new additions, forward Kyle Murphy, was forced to exit only 30 minutes into the match with a groin injury. Panamanian dynamo Juan Tejada came off the bench to replace Murphy as the second forward alongside Sebastian Guenzatti. As usual, Tejada was a menace to opposing defense, pressing and running down balls in NYRB II’s half at every chance. Eventually forward Lucky Mkosana came on late to close the match out.

“You don’t want to have to make a change as early as that. I think Kyle and Seba were linking up well. It’s a game that was meant for Kyle. His ability to hurt people in behind, but also the physical aspect he brings,” Collins said. “But to be able to bring on Juan Tejada and keep Lucky on the bench until late are great options to have… It’s something that we don’t want to have to do too often but the players adapted. We looked really fit. We didn’t have to take anyone off cause they weren’t fit. It was just tactical changes that we made from that point on.”

After a scoreless 56 minutes, returning Rowdie Leo Fernandes produced the winner through some smart play with midfielder Zach Steinberger. From the left flank, Fernandes passed to Zach Steinberger inside the box. While Steinberger drew in defenders and moved toward the endline, Fernandes continued his run and eventually drifted to find a window of space by the six-yard box. Steinberger cut his pass back to Fernandes, who fired a shot to the far post before the defenders could close him down.

Fernandes happened to do this in front of a large cheering section of family and friends that had camped out on top of the parking garage next to the field to watch the Long Island native take on NYRB II. The group predictably went wild in celebration.

“Yeah, my family travels well,” Fernandes joked. “I definitely wasn’t saving that goal to score in front of them. Just wanna score whenever I can. It was a big win, especially for the first game of the year, against this team. It means a lot. Zach played a good ball. As soon as I got it I just tried to turn to put it on target as quick as I can and aim for the other side of the post.”

Just five minutes after his goal Fernandes nearly doubled the lead when he placed a curling strike from outside the box directly into the far post. The rebound fell for Tejada to direct into the net, but he had been in an offside position when the shot was taken so the goal was waived off.

“The second half was a bit more quality, a bit more belief in ourselves in the final third. Once they got the goal the belief started through the team. From that point on we created more chances, looked good,” Collins said.

The Rowdies weathered the storm in the late stages as NYRB II piled on the pressure to find an equalizer. Scarlett and his center back partners Forrest Lasso and Aaron Guillen put in sturdy performances for much of the afternoon. Fernandes and right wing back Mustapha Dumbaya also pitched in at the back to keep NYRB II off the board.

“I think today it was about character,” Collins said. “Character is a big part of why we signed two or three of these guys. Their willingness to just gut it out, dig in, just defend that goal as if their life depended on it. That’s what we were looking to add, a little bit of that resilience. They definitely did that today but there’s definitely aspects as well I want us to improve. I’m sure every team across the league will be feeling that after the first game of the season.”

Every Sports Mogul Needs David Beckham's Custom Tudor Watch

Welcome to (Inter) Miami, bienvenidos a (Inter) Miami

A 0-1 loss to Los Angeles FC won't deter David Beckham. Oh no. His big 'soccer' baby has been six years in the womb, and a disappointing debut doesn't necessarily mean a disappointing season ahead. They've got a very nice logo, for one. Qatar signed a comically vast £180 million sponsorship deal last month. And lest we forget that Beckham – a Golden Boot with menswear classics – is the ultimate BIG SPORTS mogul. He's got the watch to prove it.

At Inter Miami's last training session, the 44-year-old talked tactics and looked all concerned in a custom-built Tudor Pelagos. Long an ambassador for the outdoors-geared marque (which only saw a return to the market in 2013 following a hiatus), the piece itself is the sort of quieter dive piece that Tudor does so well: functional, robust, but not quite the gold-gilded arm cannon that really has no place splashing around in the deep end.

It should be on the side of a football pitch instead. That's because the Pelagos clocks in at a noticeable 42mm – large enough to pop below the cuff of a tracksuit or hoody – with a black dial, ceramic bezel and a final kiss of the fingers in an Inter Miami crest replacing the usual Tudor branding at 6 o'clock.

The entire design is often seen as a mark two of the Black Bay: another dive watch stablemate, just without the technical pedigree of the Pelagos. For inside, you've got an MT5612 calibre (a movement exclusive to Tudor) instead of a regular ETA movement, and a pretty special helium escape valve which is telling of the marque's dedication to making watches that are fit-for-purpose, in addition to peak physical fitness.

Because the Tudor Pelagos is as quietly handsome as you'll get. It's shiny, yes. But a degree subtler than big bougie gold watches thanks to its titanium construction. It's technical, too. But with a relatively uncluttered dial that swerves complexity (or, worse, being over-engineered). All that makes for the perfect sports mogul watch, the sort of canonised big leaguer that knows a thing or two about Swiss horology seeing as he's on his 104th fancy piece.

Granted, a win in the MLS is probably the best way to portray yourself as a co-owner wonder proper. But a custom Tudor watch is a kick in the right direction.
