David Beckham MLS team update: Major League Soccer expert reveals latest on Miami franchise

Alexi Lalas has given an update on David Beckham’s Major League Soccer team which was officially founded in the opening weeks of this year.

Miami will host the expansion franchise, which still is without a name despite the ownership group using both ‘Miami Vice’ and ‘Miami Current’ in presentations for city officials and potential investors.

Beckham received an option to purchase an expansion team for a reduced price when he joined the LA Galaxy in 2007

England legend Beckham leads the franchise with his business partner Simon Fuller and Bolivian businessman Marcelo Claure. There has been further investment since initial talks, with Masayoshi Son and brothers Jorge and Jose Mas added to the ownership group in December 2017.

The ownership group were officially awarded the expansion team on January 29, with plans to launch the team in the 2020 season.

However, there has been little news since the January unveiling, and former MLS player and current pundit Lalas has explained just what is going on with the Miami franchise.

Speaking to the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Lalas said: “The saga continues down in Miami. David is such a smart human being when it comes to the brand of Beckham. This has been a saga that has been going on for a number of years in Miami, but they are letting it play out.

“Major League Soccer and the Major League Soccer owners want David Beckham to succeed and they want to have him as part of that group.

“And Miami has always been a target in terms of a city.

“Getting in right in Miami though… that has proven much, much harder than I think he and many others realised.

“There has been movement - they finally announced it’s going to be the expansion team - and they are trying to get that stadium. That’s what is key.

“Because he got this sweetheart deal because of who he was and very good management, they are going to hold his feet to the fire and hope they get the best possible stadium.

“Because whatever type of business you are in, it’s all about location, location, location.

Beckham and his investment group bought the land pictured above to build a 25,000 seater stadium for the Miami franchise

“You’ve got to have a good stadium situation down there, and until they have it they are going to wait and wait and wait until they can say: ‘this is where the stadium is going to be and this is why we are going to do it’.

“They can’t afford to mess it up in that market.”

Stadium Lease Snapshot: Bridgeview and the Chicago Fire, and the Best/Worst Sports Lease in the United States

There are other things in this lease, but I think everyone gets the idea. It also may (I stress may) explain this latest news about a USL team starting in Chicago. Given the airtight nature of this lease, short of a catastrophic event, the only way to get the Fire out of Bridgeview, AND get a MLS team in Chicago proper, is to come to an agreement with Bridgeview. In light of the financial issues that are ongoing in Bridgeview, it is certainly possible; nothing prevents the parties from mutually terminating/amending the agreement. If the price is right.

Branding the Canadian Premier League: Kits (juneof86.com)

As a side note: The Rowdies really have one of the most iconic color/style combinations of American soccer.

Their kits would be a great addition to MLS.

Very true

I dig it.

Every highlight of theirs I've seen, I've always known who they were by their kits. A distinct color scheme is always good, and they nailed it.

Branding the CPL: kits

With the York9 FC launch set for Thursday, let’s conclude our three part discussion of branding for the Canadian Premier League by focusing on kits.

The difficulty when evaluating kits is that so much of their appeal is subjective. The quality of a logo in particular, or even a name, feels much more objective than what makes a great shirt design or overall look. One person’s classic may be dull to another. What might be a dated monstrosity in some eyes may be retro cool to others.

The Tampa Bay Mutiny had garish kits out of the gate, but given a couple of years to lock in on what was good about their colour scheme, they managed to look pretty good in some Gremio knock-offs. Ripping off another club’s kit is pretty lame, but the colour combination was nice even if the stripes were derivative.
