The 15 most memorable games in Timbers-Sounders rivalry history

Timbers beat Sounders in playoffs in inaugural season (August 12, 1975)

After compiling a 16-6 regular season record in their inaugural season in 1975, the Timbers went on to face the Sounders in the first round of the North American Soccer League playoffs. An incredible 31,000 fans crowded into Civic Stadium to watch the game. Portland and Seattle remained locked at 1-1 at the end of regulation, which sent the game to overtime. That's when Portland's Tony Betts headed in his iconic sudden-death, game-winning goal to give the Timbers a 2-1 victory. Portland went on to earn a spot in the Soccer Bowl before falling to the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

Lusitanos to Pioneers: Ludlow’s Enduring Passion

Youngsters begin arriving for practice at Lusitano Stadium in late afternoon. It’s spring and the weather’s starting to warm – the days are getting longer. Later, the lights go on and the Western Mass Pioneers take the field to get ready for their 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup opener against the Elm City Express on May 9.

A statue of Mozambique-born Eusebio da Silva Ferreira – the famed Black Pearl of Portuguese soccer who was known the world over as, simply, Eusebio – greets visitors at the stadium’s front gate. On the right is a barn-like concession area, also housing the Gremio Lusitano Wall of Fame with trophies reaching to the ceiling. Many check in with Western Mass general manager Greg Kolodziey, who played for the Lusitanos before the team became the Pioneers in 1998.

Soccer players have been coming here since 1922, when members of Gremio Lusitano, a culture and recreation club, lined out a dirt field on Winsor Street, across from the clubhouse. The club team competed against the Thistles, a local Scottish squad, and opposition from other New England mill towns. Soon, Gremio Lusitano FC was developing players for the U.S. National Team, advancing deep in both the U.S. Amateur Cup and National Challenge Cup, as the U.S. Open Cup used to be known (they are four-time quarterfinalists), and contending in the revamped American Soccer League.

In the 1940s and ‘50s, the stadium – then named Franklin Field, probably after nearby Franklin Street – attracted capacity crowds for matches, including several against top European teams like Everton FC. A crowd of 4,500 watched on when Lusitano played to a 3-3 draw with Jönköping FC of Sweden in 1951. At the time, Ludlow’s population was listed at just more than 8,000.

Whether fronted by the Gremio Lusitano teams of old or the current Western Mass Pioneers of PDL, Ludlow, Massachusetts, and its waves of Portuguese immigrants, have had a near century-long love affair with soccer. And it’s still going strong ahead of the 2018 U.S. Open Cup.

After the American Soccer League (ASL) folded its New England division in the 1950s, Gremio Lusitano’s team played in local leagues likes the Massachusetts & New Hampshire State Soccer Association, Connecticut Soccer League and the Luso-American Soccer Association. The club played host to friendlies with Sporting CP and other Portuguese clubs such as GD Chaves, SC Olhanense and CD Santa Clara, the visitors attracted by Lusitano Stadium, which the club calls the only soccer-specific stadium in New England.

During the 1970s, former Benfica superstar Eusebio arrived in Ludlow along with Humberto Coehlo and Antonio Simoes, all playing in the old North American Soccer League (NASL), for a friendly match against the Connecticut Bicentennials. Eusebio returned to Ludlow for a tribute in the early ‘90s. In 2016, two years after Eusebio’s death, Gillette Stadium had removed a statue of him – another copy stands in front of Estadio da Luz in Lisbon – and Gremio Lusitano came to the rescue.

Pereira, who set a Ludlow High School record with 50 goals in a season, might have been the first to follow a path from this club to the Ivy League to pro soccer (the latest would be New York City midfielder Thomas McNamara). “I was born in Portugal and came here when I was 12,” said Pereira, 64, who played at Brown University, then in the NASL and for the U.S. national team. “Fortunately, it was a very good soccer town and that made it easier for me to make friends. Ludlow is a good town to come to if you’re a soccer player.”

Rick Kriseman and St. Pete EDC head to San Francisco on first business development mission

ST. PETERSBURG — For its first-ever business development trip, the Greater St. Petersburg Area Economic Development Corp. headed to San Francisco, the tech-business world’s pricey capital, with a pitch about another bay area where sticker shock is not so big an issue.

"San Francisco is a very, very cool place, but oftentimes it’s hard to live there because of the sheer size of it and the cost," said EDC president J.P. DuBuque, who booked the trip after talking with local San Francisco ex-pats about why they moved from there to here.

DuBuque and Mayor Rick Kriseman had a total of 11 meetings with seven companies from Wednesday to Friday morning of last week. Some are looking at expanding operations outside of California. One is thinking about a wholesale move.

"Our goal was to make sure that we were on their radar and to see if we could give them enough information to get them interested in looking into a little deeper at the possibility of us being that east coast hub for them," Kriseman said.

No names are being released, but the companies they visited occupy various corners of the tech landscape — software development, fintech and technology manufacture — from Sausalito on the north to San Jose on the south. They’re growing, with annual sales in the $10 million to $50 million range. Some are or have been on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private firms.

"Talent was the primary thing they were talking about," DuBuque said Monday. Some were thinking about new offices for engineers, others for sales and administrative services jobs. Several mentioned a need to expand data analytics operations.

That was encouraging, Kriseman said, because data analytics has been targeted by the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce’s "Grow Smarter" strategy and has become a fast-growing employment sector for the city. Of about 3,000 net new jobs created in St. Petersburg from 2016 to 2017, nearly half were at data analytics companies.

Seven San Francisco tech companies on the hook for St. Pete

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman and St. Pete Economic Development Corp. CEO J.P. DuBuque have returned from San Francisco, after going on a business development mission last week to woo seven companies to the city.

The companies, which the EDC would not name because they are official job creation prospects, would bring to St. Pete anywhere from 10 to 100 jobs each and are technology-based firms.

“Some of them are hot. As in, we need to do something yesterday,” DuBuque said. “Others are asking to plan a visit.”

If the EDC is successful in attracting any of the businesses, DuBuque said it could be anywhere from three months to more than a year to see it happen.

The seven prospects would likely all be eligible for tax rebates under the state’s Qualified Target Industry program, but that depends on how many jobs a company creates, the average wage for employees and whether the industry meets an area’s job targets.

MLS, MLB, the NHL, and the expansion game

US Soccer Players - MLS has had the expansion game mostly to itself since their decision to revamp the league by doubling the number of teams. The expansion era is happening in isolation, save for the NHL adding Las Vegas this season. It's been a long time since the other North American pro sports teams decided expansion was nice to talk about in theory, but not their immediate goal.

City holding Major League Soccer open meetings to get input

Major League Soccer is looking to come to town but the big question is what do Austinites think? The city is holding a few open meetings to see what people want.

McKalla Place in northwest Austin is where the stadium could be built if a MLS team comes. The location was finally settled on after months of debate on where to build the stadium.

Ever since the announcement was made back in October that Austin could be getting the team there has been a lot of mixed feelings.

The people of Austin are invited to participate in open discussions about the chance of the stadium being built on publicly owned land.
