The MLS Cup Final drew more fans to Mercedes-Benz Stadium than the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is supposed to be the biggest sporting event on the planet, but a remarkable fact doing the rounds on social media suggests it wasn’t even the biggest in the last few months!

As pointed out by a number of people on Twitter, the NFL’s showpiece game has failed to outdraw the Major League Soccer Cup final back in December at the same stadium.

The official attendance for the Super Bowl has been documented as 70,081 people at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

A few months ago, 73,019 football fans of a different kind flocked to the same venue to watch Atlanta United beat Portland Timbers 2-0 in the Cup final.

Some cheeky fans were also quick to point out that United actually scored more points (they led 1-0 at HT) in their first half than the Los Angeles Rams did against the New England Patriots (they trailed 3-0 at the half).

Obviously seating configuration, exorbitant ticket prices and other things contribute to these numbers, but regardless its a remarkable win for soccer in America!

Miami’s pursuit of an MLS soccer stadium for Beckham team faces a new lawsuit

Two lawsuits filed by a Miami attorney aim to derail the effort to redevelop a city-owned golf course into a stadium and commercial complex for David Beckham’s planned Major League Soccer team.

One suit, filed late Tuesday, raises questions about whether the city correctly described the land that would be leased for construction of the complex. The allegations could throw another legal wrench in the gears of those who want to quickly craft a lease and seek approval from Miami commissioners — gears that had already been jammed by an earlier ethics complaint.

Another suit, filed last week and reported by the Daily Business Review, focuses on issues related to laws requiring Beckham and all his associates and lobbyists to disclose the ownership of the corporation they are representing — issues that came to light as a result of an ethics complaint filed by Miami attorney David Winker.

HARTFORD ATHLETIC ADDS FIVE PLAYERS

Hartford – Hartford Athletic announced the signing of Kyle Curinga (Clearwater, FL), Jonathan Brown (Bridgend, Wales), Tyler David (Lakeville, MN), Jacob Lissek (Highlands Ranch, CO), and Mike Novotny (St. Charles, IL) for the Club’s inaugural USL Championship season in 2019, pending league and federation approval.

Curinga, Brown, and David bring significant USL Championship experience to Hartford. Curinga, a defender, played with Real Monarchs in 2017 and with Tampa Bay Rowdies in 2018. Jonathan Brown played 37 matches with OKC Energy FC in 2017 and 2018 after playing for 9 years in England. Tyler David played two seasons with St. Louis FC, making 50 appearances.

Lissek and Novotny add depth at goalkeeper as the Club announced last week the signing of Denmark’s Frederik Due. “I love the level of competition we’ve created in goal,” said Nielsen. “I expect Jacob, Mike, and Frederik to push each other every day in practice and help make each other better goalkeepers.”

Kyle Curinga is a defender from Clearwater, Florida, who spent last season with the Tampa Bay Rowdies. The 25-year-old started his career in Finland where he played for 3 years. Curinga returned to America
