The State of the 2019 Rowdies Roster

The Tampa Bay Rowdies were quiet for much of the offseason, but that has changed in recent weeks. With still a few weeks left to go until the club kicks off its 2019 USL Championship seasson, 22 players have been confirmed for the roster ater a flurry of signing announcements.

Preseason action started a couple weeks ago with closed door matches, but things will pick up in earnest this weekend and supporters will get their first look at the new squad as the Suncoast Invitational comes to Al Lang once again. With all the changes happening for the Rowdies on the field as Neill Collins exerts his influence in his first offseason as head coach, The Unused Substitutes takes a look at who’s returning, who the new faces are and what they have to offer.

Bill Edwards, affiliates sue longtime friend, adviser alleging he divulged trade secrets to New York developer

This is behind a paywall, but here are a couple relevant nuggets...

Bill Edwards and his conglomerate of St. Petersburg retail and entertainment companies are suing longtime employee and adviser Joseph C. Jimenez, saying he used Edwards’ group's information to help competitors gain an advantage on potential commercial real estate deals and other developments.

Edwards, along with Big 3 Entertainment LLC and Loan Ranger Acquisitions, filed suit against Jimenez on Feb. 13 in Pinellas County Circuit Court.

The lawsuit says Jimenez signed a confidentiality and non-compete agreement with Big 3 on May 20, 2010, which also included The Edwards Group and Loan Ranger.

Jimenez’s disclosure of confidential information, trade secrets and efforts on behalf of competitors put The Edwards Group companies at a competitive disadvantage in pursuing their development business, causing loss of profits and opportunities, the lawsuit alleges.

Court documents allege that in 2016, Jimenez began conspiring with the Red Apple Group, a St. Petersburg firm led by New York billionaire developer John Catsimatidis, who owns a 2-acre block of Central Avenue. Catsimatidis paid $16.5 million for the block, which can accommodate a mixed-use development of up to 800,000 square feet. Plans are already underway for a 50-story mixed-use tower on the property.

The article goes on to talk about how Jimenez worked with Red Apple Group to help them work towards the eventual development of that property (which is the bulk of the article), but then drops this random nugget:

Jimenez also kept Catsimatidis up-to-date on discussions related to the potential development of Tropicana Field at the same time talks were underway about the possibility of the Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer team, which is owned by Edwards, relocating to that site as part of the team’s efforts to become a Major League Soccer team, the lawsuit alleges. Jimenez at the time had actively been working on the Rowdies deal and had confidential information about the plan.

Further context, the 400 block is Red Apple’s first dip in the St. Pete waters – certainly a competitor to Edwards buying and selling properties downtown.

Bit of a conflict with Edwards own statement about not being interested in the Trop site in this Tampa Bay Times piece in August 2017...

Business lessons from a lawsuit Bill Edwards filed against a former employee

Here’s one big takeaway from a lawsuit that’s bound to rattle the development community in St. Petersburg —  emails can be retrieved even after they are deleted.

Deleted emails are the basis for the complaint filed by developer Bill Edwards and several companies he owns against Joe Jimenez, a former employee and long-time friend of Edwards.

The complaint, filed Feb. 13 in Pinellas County Circuit Court, accuses Jimenez of engaging in “corporate espionage” and providing confidential information to competitors, primarily Red Apple Group, the New York-based company that plans a $250 million to $300 million development in the 400 block of Central Avenue in downtown St. Petersburg.

A message left on Jimenez’ phone requesting comment was not immediately returned.

Lawsuits contain allegations that have not yet been proven in court.

Jimenez worked for Edwards’ companies in executive positions from May 2010 until Jan. 11 of this year, when he left the company. He was hired as executive director for hospitality and entertainment at Big 3 Entertainment, the company that has a contract with the city of St. Petersburg to operate the Mahaffey Theater. He later was appointed vice president of The Bill Edwards Group, a real estate development firm.

After Jimenez resigned, the companies retrieved emails he had deleted, the lawsuit said.

Based on those emails, allegations in the lawsuit include:

Jimenez introduced Red Apple Group owner John Catsimatidis to local decision-makers, including city officials, developers, entrepreneurs and investors.

Jimenez was involved in an effort to sell the Tradewinds Island Grande Resort in St. Pete Beach to Catsimatidis; that deal did not take place.

Jimenez helped Catsimatidis in his successful bid for the property at 400 Central Ave., “stealing the opportunity” from Edwards and causing Jimenez to “neglect his work” for Edwards’ companies.

Those, and other situations detailed in the lawsuit, caused financial harm to Edwards’ companies, the suit contends. [See the full complaint here: Big 3 Entertainment, et al. versus Joseph Jimenez]

The suit accuses Jimenez of breach of fiduciary duty, breach of a non-compete agreement and violations of Florida’s Uniform Trade Secrets Act. It asks for $20,000 in damages for each breach.

A separate motion asks for a temporary injunction that would keep Jimenez from working for any competitor within 75 miles of St. Petersburg and from divulging confidential information and trade secrets.

A hearing date has not yet been set.

Clayton County’s forgotten soccer history

JONESBORO — Atlanta reached the pinnacle of North American soccer last November when Atlanta United won the 2018 MLS cup.

Behind the star power of Josef Martinez, Atlanta has become a soccer town, setting attendance records at Mercedes Benz Stadium and building a whole nation of soccer fanatics. However, it was not the first championship for an Atlanta soccer team, the 1968 Atlanta Chiefs won the North American Soccer League Championship with a win over the San Diego Toros.

But it’s a little-known fact, those same Chiefs made their home in Clayton County for the 1970 season, when they set up shop at our own Tara Stadium.

By the end of the 1969 season, the Chiefs, who were owned by the Atlanta Braves and played their home games at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium went looking for a new home because of the high cost to operate. Originally, it was thought that Dekalb Memorial Stadium would be the logical choice and both parties began negotiations.

In the end, DeKalb County told the Chiefs no, and the team’s leadership, led by Braves Executive Dick Cecil, found a willing host in Clayton County. At a press conference on February 5, 1970 with Cecil and Clayton County school superintendent J.E. Edmonds, the announcement was made. Cecil was quoted at the time, “Contrary to what you may have heard, the Chiefs aren’t gone with the wind, they’re moving to Tara,” in a play on the theme of the movie.

The 1970 team was coached by Vic Rouse from Swansea, Wales. Rouse was a goal-keeper on the original 1967 and was promoted to head coach for that season. The 1970 team led the league with 53 goals scored and featured three first-team NASL All-Stars in Uriel da Veiga, Dave Metchick and Art Welch. They competed in the Southern Division against that also included the Washington Darts and Dallas Tornado.

The first NASL game ever played at Tara was on April 11, 1970 against the St. Louis Stars in front of 5,317 fans. The account of the game in the Atlanta Constitution added, “The ones who got lost in the far reaches of Clayton County were still filing in at halftime. The Chiefs took a 2-0 lead early behind a penalty kick by Mike Ash and then a header by Graham Newton on a corner kick. The lead was short-lived, and the Chiefs eventually lost 4-2.

Big name international soccer players called Tara home that season, including Henry Largie who played for the Jamaican National Team and Nick Papadakis who played on Canada’s team. The team purposefully with a heavy international flavor.

Their overall record ended up 11-8-5 and the second-best record in the league but failed to qualify for the playoffs. They also two hosted two international games at Tara Stadium, Coventry City from England which drew a crowd of 6,773 and Hapoel Petah Tikva from Israel. Several players from this team were on the Israeli National Team that had just finished in the top 16 of the 1970 World Cup in Mexico City.

In the end, it didn’t quite work out, the fans stopped making the drive to Tara and attendance dropped to an all-time low of 3,002 per game. The team moved back to Atlanta for the 1971 season and once again finished as league runner up, but after the 1973, the franchise was dissolved. For one exciting season, Clayton County was exposed to a professional sport that was still a bit ahead of its time in the south.

MLS is getting rid of long-sleeve jerseys but nobody will say why

As a string of MLS jerseys were unveiled last week, another piece of kit-related news leaked out from two MLS-related Twitter accounts.

Now, long sleeves aren’t for everybody, but some players are so devoted to long-sleeve jerseys that they’re willing to wear them under pretty much any conditions.

David Beckham did it throughout those long Southern California summers, and during a sweltering World Cup in East Asia—and now the Galaxy are building a statue of him, presumably wearing long sleeves. Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Gerard Pique are three more prominent players who seem to prefer long sleeves. Among current MLS players, Ilie Sanchez and Greg Garza tend to favor the look. And some fans evidently share their devotion.

There was no public announcement from MLS or from Adidas, the league’s kit supplier, and so, in the name of journalism, I took it upon myself to find out what is happening with long-sleeve jerseys in Major League...

Politicized Sports Remind Us That Nothing Is Sacred

All this takes us to Major League Soccer, the youngest of the major American sports leagues, in terms of both how long it has been around and the average age of its fan base.

MLS has by far and away the highest percentage of millennials making up its fan base, compared to other leagues. One thing we know about Millennials is they are much more likely than other generations to be political activists, and they have been bringing their political activism with them on game day.

The MLS crowd, which leans left, have in the last few years started to bring political signage to games. When this started, the media lauded this development as a spontaneous and positive effort to fight for universal values, such as antifascism.

Of course, who a fascist is exactly is sometimes in the eye of the bolder, and the anti-fascist signage could have been construed as a not so subtle dig at the current resident of the White House.

Predictably, the political signage gambit got out of hand at MLS games, forcing some teams to develop a political signage policy to limit or ban what kind of signage could be brought into games after flags supporting the radical group Antifa started showing up at games. Rumors persist that Antifa had targeted MLS games as a propaganda opportunity.

Is it just me or is it not a sad state of affairs that politics and sports are becoming synonymous?

Sports used to be a place that all people, no matter their race, age, wealth, religion, or political affiliation could come together as one and root root root for the home team. Excessive politics in places that don’t require politics have become a type of cultural poison that are turning Americans against each other for no particular reason. I long for the day that the only difference that matters again at a sporting event is the final score.

UConn, Premier League soccer games eyed for Hartford's Dillon Stadium

Owners of the Hartford Athletic say they are working to bring UConn and English Premier League soccer games to historic Dillon Stadium in 2019.

Hartford Sports Group (HSG) CEO and Chairman Bruce Mandell on Friday said the franchise is in negotiations with UConn to host the school's entire 2019 slate of men's and women's soccer games as it completes building a new home soccer stadium in Storrs.

Mandell also said the Athletic, the newest member of the expanded United Soccer League (USL), has been contacted by teams in the Premier League to play exhibition games vs. Hartford's new club at the roughly 5,500-seat Dillon Stadium in 2019.

The Premier League has several globally popular soccer players and teams, including Chelsea F.C., Manchester City F.C., Liverpool F.C. and Manchester United F.C.

"We have Premier League teams looking to play us this summer, it's never been done in Hartford," said Mandell of negotiations with teams in the top English soccer league. "There have been multiple teams engaging us to play an exhibition game."

The UConn and Premier League pursuits are part of a growing list of ambitious projects HSG, an investor group that includes co-partners Joseph Calafiore Jr. and Scott Schooley, is exploring to maximize use of the soon-to-be renovated Dillon Stadium.

In November, Mandell told Hartford Business Journal that HSG spent extra money to upgrade Dillon's artificial turf field in hopes it would field both professional rugby and lacrosse teams.

HSG has drawn inquiries from several rugby and lacrosse leagues, but he declined to specify which leagues are in play.

UConn has not yet released its 2019 schedule for men's and women's soccer, but their seasons typically begin in mid-August.

The school tore down Joseph J. Morrone Stadium last year, and is currently building a new venue for the 2020 season. The project is being supported by an $8 million donation pledged by former UConn soccer player Tony Rizza.

But even after UConn completes its new stadium, Mandell says the school is still looking play select soccer games at Dillon, similar to how the UConn basketball teams play in downtown's XL Center.

"We are building a relationship with UConn where they would be able to use the stadium," Mandell said. "This is going to be a mecca and a cathedral for the community of Hartford, Greater Hartford and the state of Connecticut."

A UConn spokesman on Friday confirmed the school has had discussions with HSG about playing its soccer games at Dillon Stadium, but no agreement is in place.

Adidas apparel deal

In addition to new potential opportunities for Dillon, the Athletic on Thursday announced it struck a multiyear deal with Adidas, which will become the team's official on-field apparel provider. The deal is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, Mandell said, though he declined to specify terms.

The Athletic will soon unveil game uniforms for its 34-game schedule running from March to October. Its home opener at Dillon is scheduled for May 4.

Renovations at Dillon are still on pace to be completed for the home opener, Mandell says. But the team has set plans to play games at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford if the Dillon renovations are further delayed.

The Athletic-Adidas apparel deal is not exclusive to the team's retail merchandise, which will be sold by specialty retailer TeamSports at its locations in Farmington, Glastonbury and West Springfield, Mass.

Indy Eleven owner makes soccer stadium pitch to lawmakers

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-- The man who brought professional soccer to Indianapolis wants to keep professional soccer in Indianapolis and today asked state lawmakers to approve a funding formula for a $150 million 20,000 seat stadium.

Indy Eleven Owner Ersal Ozdemir told a state senate committee that if it would give the Capitol Improvement Board (CIB) the go ahead to build the stadium, he would construct a $400 million mixed use development right next door and the tax money raised by that project could pay off the CIB’s construction bonds.

“We need to have a permanent home. We are drawing 10,000 now. We strongly believe we would get over 15,000 easily,” Ozdemir said. “Without a permanent home its impossible to have a global organization and for us to have any chance to move up to the next level we have to have a soccer stadium.”

The Indy Eleven currently plays in the United Soccer League (USL) with dreams of moving up to Major League Soccer (MLS) status.
