An updated, tiered look at the MLS Expansion race

As we enter the midway point of the MLS season, and the middle of the calendar year, we’re supposedly less than six months away from a decision on MLS teams 25 and 26.

A few candidates have furthered their bids dramatically in recent months, such as the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Others have fallen off hard, with St. Louis and San Diego suffering big hits. Commissioner Don Garber has even visited a few of the candidate cities, bolstering the faith of supporters in Nashville and Cincinnati, while those in either of the North Carolina bids have been left wanting.

With so little time before MLS’ self-imposed decision deadline, the end of 2017, it’s worth taking a look at where each candidate stands in relation to the others. Here’s a look at the candidates bracketed into tiers of probability:

TIER 1- FRONTRUNNERS

TAMPA/ST. PETERSBURG

The bid fronted by the Tampa Bay Rowdies and owner Bill Edwards was always one to take seriously. Edwards has the political capital within the American soccer scene to make a major push, and he’s utilized those resources to make a big push for one of the two expansion slots up for grabs in 2017. The Rowdies made their intentions clear when they made the leap from the NASL to the MLS-partnered USL at the beginning of the year. That move has paid off on the field, with the team sitting in playoff position through 18 matches, and was likely a helpful factor off the field through increased relations with MLS.

With a successful team, a dedicated and proven ownership group, and a major U.S. market, the Rowdies were just a stadium plan away when their bid was announced. That bid received a major boost into the top tier when, on May 2, St. Petersburg voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum that allowed the city to enter negotiations with Edwards for a 25-year lease on Al Lang Stadium. Edwards plan is to spend roughly $80 million to renovate and expand the Rowdies current home to a capacity of 18,000. Just like that, the Rowdies finished the final pillar of their bid and now simply await a decision from the league, one that Edwards hopes is made in his favor.

SACRAMENTO

Much like the Rowdies bid, the Sacramento group comes backed by an existing USL team, the Republic, and their ownership group led by Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman. With a highly successful USL team, currently in playoff position, a strong ownership group, and a previously approved 20,000 seat stadium plan, the Republic were ready for MLS expansion before the process was even announced. The lone piece holding the bid back was a crucial one, however, as the group behind the MLS bid was apparently entirely unaffiliated with the Republic. The divisive nature of the two groups caused a great deal of anxiety in Sacramento, as it could have derailed an otherwise perfect bid.

That issue was resolved in early May as Sac Soccer & Entertainment Holdings, the group behind the MLS bid, announced the acquisition of the Republic and their official incorporation into the bid. The purchase brought major power to the ownership group, unifying Sac Soccer CEO Kevin Nagle, HP CEO Whitman, and San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York under a single banner. That’s a lot of firepower and all the more reason to keep Sacramento near the forefront of the expansion discussion.

Pulis: Match Against Tampa Bay About “More Than Points”

On Thursday night, Orlando City B will host the Tampa Bay Rowdies for their second matchup of the 2017 USL season. Everyone knows that there is bad blood between the two local rivals: the Lions will be playing for pride and for points when they take the pitch Thursday night.

“It’s a huge game. Obviously there is more at stake than points, it’s local pride,” Head Coach Anthony Pulis said in training this week. “We know how much this means to the supporters, the hardcore supporters who have been here since Day One.”

The rivalry between Tampa and Orlando has always been important, going back to the days before Orlando City joined MLS. Now, Tampa Bay is in a bid of their own for MLS expansion and that tension only makes both teams want to prove themselves more.

“I think there will definitely be a little bit of added spice to it. Obviously they’re trying to get their MLS expansion franchise and we’re already there,” Pulis said. “So, for sure, I’m imagining they’re going to bring down a few supporters themselves. Hopefully we can get a good crowd and I’m sure it will be a good game.”

Rowdies Home Attendance Thread - Game 9 vs. FC Cincinnati [7/6] (self.TampaBayRowdies)

A decent showing for a typical mid-week game (6,269) - it was a great crowd and atmosphere until the heavens decided to open up on us. It was however lower than the typical July 4th-ish game for use which generally we would expect to sellout with the concert. Now Kool and the Gang doesn't have the same current relevance than Flo Rida, but still. Rays were also in town, hosting the Red Sox, so all things considered it probably wasn't a bad turnout. This was (because of timing) a big increase on Game 9 of last year (4,773) and these next few games allow us to catch up a bit to perhaps pull even with our season average of last year.

Note worth mentioning - the last three games have all been over 6,000.

Up next is Charleston Battery on July 22 in what will be a Rowdies Throwback Night. Looking forward to that one.

http://www.83degreesmedia.com/devnews/new-musuem-displays-western-art-071117.aspx

New James Museum transforms 100 block of Central Ave., Downtown St. Pete

A 105-ton stone mesa will frame the entrance to the Tom & Mary James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art Museum, St. Petersburg’s newest addition to its growing collection of arts and cultural organizations.

Located at the corner of 100 Central Avenue and First Avenue South in the heart of downtown, the James Museum represents the vision of Tom James, chairman emeritus of Raymond James Financial, and his wife Mary.

The James’ have donated $50 million to build the museum, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2017 with a grand opening in early 2018.

The museum will display a portion of the James’ vast collection of more than 3,000 pieces of western and wildlife art and sculpture, as well as Native American jewelry.  The couple began collecting western and wildlife art in the late 1950s and now have one of the largest private collections in Florida.

“When my wife Mary and I decided to share the best of our collection through the establishment of a museum, it made perfect sense to build that museum in the city that has been our home for over 50 years and so much a part of our family’s success,” says James.

“Anchored by the Dali Museum, St. Petersburg already has such a strong arts presence in downtown,” says James. “We wanted to augment the array of cultural attractions and further establish the city as a cultural destination, while providing educational and entertainment opportunities for the community.”

The final steel beam that will support the 219-foot foot tall stone mesa was lowered into place at the end of June during a “topping off” ceremony.  The event marked slightly more than the halfway point for construction of the 84,000-square foot museum, which when completed will be larger than The Dali Museum.

From parking garage to museum

The  location of the new James Museum will be a first for the city. Rather than taking shape as a free-standing entity,  the museum is being built within the bottom two floors of the SouthCore Parking Garage, a distinctive pink landmark in the 100 block of Central Avenue.  The new ONE 41-story luxury condo tower is under construction across the street.

Last year, St. Petersburg City Council approved a 50-year lease between the city and the museum. Parking for the museum and the public will continue to be available in the remainder of the eight-story public parking garage.

In a prepared statement, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman says he is enthusiastic about the city’s partnership with the museum, which will bring another significant landmark to the downtown core.

The Beck Group is overseeing construction of the museum, which will include a 30,000-square-feet gallery space, 6,000-square feet event space, 120-seat theater, indoor sculpture court, commercial catering kitchen, café and museum store.

St. Pete Design Group, a joint venture between Harvard Jolly Architecture, Architect Yann Weymouth and Wanemacher Jensen Architects, are designing the exterior and interior.

Weymouth designed The Dali Museum, now a major draw for visitors internationally to the city. The design for the new James Museum is expected to be just as distinctive architecturally. In addition to the 105-ton stone mesa on the front of the building, interior features include a two-story stone arroyo and waterfall.

Driving economic development

The museum’s construction presents significant development opportunities for the 100 block of Central Avenue.

Besides transforming a 30-year-old city parking garage into a museum, the team will be creating 35,000-square-feet of retail space on the east and west side of the garage -- prime street level property that is expected to transform this corner of downtown.

The Sembler Company is leasing ground floor retail units and Echelon Real Estate Services is leasing the Class A Office space located on the second floor.

“When we selected the museum’s location, we had in mind that we should help build and beautify that part of downtown, encourage development of hotels and other amenities for residents and visitors and make the area more attractive and pedestrian friendly,”  Tom James said at an event last year announcing the launch of the new museum. “We could have given our collection to other museums or have sold it, but we thought what better opportunity to continue the development of our city.”

Rob Stone Talks Gold Cup’s Return to Tampa Bay and Rowdies MLS Bid

For the first time since 2011, Tampa Bay will play host to the U.S. Men’s national team in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. This Wednesday night at Raymond James Stadium, Coach Bruce Arena and the national team players will look to shake off the disappointment of Saturday’s 1-1 result against Panama on Saturday in Nashville with a Group Stage matchup against Martinique.

One of the faces of providing studio coverage of the match and the rest of the Gold Cup is Fox Sports’ Rob Stone, a lover of the Tampa Bay Rowdies and the Tampa Bay area in general. In the lead up to Wednesday’s match, The Unused Substitutes spoke with Stone about the importance of the market having a strong showing for the match and where he thinks the Rowdies stand in the competitive race to win one of the four Major League Soccer expansion slots that are up for grabs.

Below are some highlights of our conversation with Stone. The full interview will air on Tuesday night’s show on Radio St. Pete and will be available in podcast form shortly after that.

Rowdies’ Cohen Thrilled by Region’s ‘Rabid Fanbase’

Tampa Bay's VP & Chief Operating Officer excited for Gold Cup’s first visit to area since 2011

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Having been present from the time the Tampa Bay Rowdies kicked off their inaugural season in 2010, there are few who have seen the resurgence of soccer in Tampa Bay from the perspective of Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Lee Cohen.

As the CONCACAF Gold Cup returns to Tampa Bay for the first time since 2011 when the United States faces Martinique, and Panama squares off with Nicaragua at Raymond James Stadium on Wednesday, the difference is almost night and day.

I said to someone this is absolutely amazing to see the transformation of what in 2009 and 2010, people wrote it off as an afterthought from a soccer town, soccer community to where it is now,” Cohen said. “We have a rabid fanbase that’s just passionate about the sport and a community that’s grown behind it from the youth side – where the numbers are continuing to grow and grow and grow – to a viewership standpoint getting behind not just the Rowdies, but the sport in general. It’s really fun to go out and watch, but also be a part of on a day-to-day basis.”

Is Miami the worst place to celebrate the MLB All-Star game?

The Miami Marlins owner is an ode to everything that’s distasteful about US sports. He is the least palatable host for baseball’s showcase

Meanwhile, the NFL’s Miami Dolphins are on the up again. Team owner Stephen Ross paid for stadium upgrades himself and the Super Bowl is returning to Miami in 2020. The NBA’s Miami Heat are adored, and even second tier FC Miami are making waves, eliminating MLS’s Orlando and Atlanta en route to the US Open Cup quarter-finals. The team won the NASL Spring Championship with the league’s second highest average attendance.

In the competition for sports fans’ dollars, a Marlins game can be a tough sell.

And this is before David Beckham’s MLS team enters the fray. The former England skipper can thank Loria for the absolute nightmare of securing a stadium site, despite Beckham’s investors fronting every last cent.

Joining the USL ahead of the 2017 season, the Rowdies have quickly become one of the league’s marquee attractions with the likes of former England international Joe Cole and German international Marcel Schäfer in their ranks. The club sits third in the Eastern Conference after Thursday night’s 2-0 victory against FC Cincinnati, a game that drew more than 6,000 fans to Al Lang Stadium, and got national attention through its broadcast on ESPNU.

LA's Newest Soccer Club Makes Progress on $350 Million Stadium

One of the newest additions to the Los Angeles sporting landscape is making progress in building a stadium. No, it's not the Chargers or the Rams; it's a team playing football of a different sort.

The Los Angeles Football Club, which will become the 23rd team in Major League Soccer when it makes its debut in 2018, has been advancing construction on the Banc of California Stadium, which will be located in Exposition Park, since the project first broke ground in 2016.

The privately-funded, 22,000-seat, soccer-specific stadium will cost $350 million, according to LAFC Brand and Community Coordinator Ben Goldman, and will include a "safe standing" section for the club's supporters' group.

Renderings of the completed stadium are as impressive as some of the club's star-studded ownership group, which includes the likes of actor Will Ferrell, former Unites States Women's National Team player Mia Hamm and former Lakers player and current President of Basketball Operations Earvin "Magic" Johnson.

Club owners hope construction will be complete in time for the team's inaugural MLS season in 2018.

Growler Cup: Matchday 17- Tampa Bay Rowdies vs. FC Cincinnati

After taking a point on the road in Orlando, FC Cincinnati heads south to face fellow MLS expansion candidate the Tampa Bay Rowdies. In the 1970’s- 1980’s the Rowdies were known for their star flair with players such as Rodney Marsh, Farrukh Quarishi and Oscar Fabbiani and this rendition is no different. The club is led by a 3 time FIFA World Cup veteran in English midfielder Joe Cole along with former German international Marcel Schäfer. Each and every game we do our best to predict the outcome of the FC Cincinnati match. Here’s how some of the staff here at CST feel things will transpire Thursday night vs. Tampa Bay.

Don CeSar Hotel - Review - St. Petersburg Beach, FL

TidyislandCPA

Published on Nov 3, 2016

Loews Don CeSar Hotel is located at 3400 Gulf Blvd, St Pete Beach, FL 33706 US. Locals call the Don CeSar Florida's "Pink Palace." The Don CeSar was built in 1928 in a distinctive Mediterranean architectural-style. Staff at the Don CeSar are well-trained, attentive, and friendly. The pristine and white sugar-sand beach is the real star of the resort. There are two large pools, a spa, game-room, and both indoor and outdoor restaurants and bars. Tropical landscaping adorns the property. Rooms, more than 270, are nicely appointed, and many have balconies overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. Try a beach cabana, absolutely decadent, to enjoy the full Don Cesar experience. Parking is limited, though. Visit https://www.loewshotels.com/don-cesar/. Reservations: 844-421-0719.

Vinoy Renaissance Hotel - Review - St. Petersburg, FL

TidyislandCPA

Published on Oct 4, 2016

The Vinoy Renaissance Hotel overlooks both Tampa Bay and a scenic marina. The Vinoy, a historic boutique hotel, is located at 501 5th Avenue NE in St. Petersburg, Florida. The staff are well-trained, attentive, and friendly. The Vinoy was lovingly restored to the high standards of when it was originally built in the 1925. Close to the Salvador Dali Museum, Central Shopping District and a charming park, the Vinoy has a lot to offer. The golf course, however, is off-site. The Vinoy attracts both business conference travelers and tourists. Try Marchand's Bar and Grill, with a stunning interior, and a dreamy Gatsbyesque veranda bar for liquid refreshments. The hotel grounds and landscaping are top-notch. The Vinoy Renaissance Hotel is about 20 minutes from St. Petersburg Beach and about 40 minutes from the beaches of Anna Maria Island. Parking is limited, but the valet service is okay. Visit https://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/tpasr-the-vinoy-renaissance-st-petersburg-resort-and-golf-club/ Telephone : 727-894-1000.

Renaissance Vinoy Resort & Golf Club in St. Petersburg, Florida Review

Cailin O'Neil

Published on Aug 20, 2013

The Renaissance Vinoy Resort & Golf Club is located in St. Petersburg, Florida. While staying there I had a standard room with a King sized bed in the Guest Tower. My room has two balconies and overlooked the harbour and downtown area. The hotel was opened in 1925 and has a lot of old charm mixed with modern touches. There are various locations on the property to eat with my favourite being the verandah bar off of the lobby along with the lounge chair waiter service poolside. They have a small spa which is rumoured to be getting a large expansion in the next few years. If you are visiting South West Florida you should definitely check out the Renaissance Vinoy Resort & Golf Club in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. www.marriott.com/tpasr

Real Madrid soccer team to open a restaurant in downtown Miami

Spanish soccer giant Real Madrid is kicking off its first U.S. restaurant in downtown Miami.

The Read Madrid Cafe, a 12,000-square-foot restaurant, will open at 340 SE Third St. in the new Met Square tower in early 2018, according to The Miami Herald.

The move is part of an expansion of the organization’s branded eateries, where fans can watch live soccer matches on large screens while drinking and dining. The first restaurant to open outside Spain was in Dubai in 2014.

The two-story Miami restaurant will feature a bar, a VIP lounge and a store selling Real Madrid memorabilia. The soccer team is known for its high-profile players including Cristiano Ronaldo.

David Beckham, who has been working on building a soccer team and stadium in Miami’s Overtown, was also a star player for Real Madrid.

Once completed, the Met Square complex will reportedly have 43 stories and feature a Silverspot Cinema, restaurants, retail outlets and luxury residential units, according to the website for the developer, MDM Development Group. Met Square was the former home of one of Miami’s first hotels, the Royal Palm Hotel, which railroad magnate Henry Flagler opened in 1897.

Met Square is the final leg of the $1 billion Metropolitan Miami project by the MDM Development Group, which already includes a residential tower, Whole Foods market, Wells Fargo Center, the JW Marriott Marquis Miami and Hotel Beaux Arts Miami in downtown Miami. The tower is expected to open in the second quarter of 2018.

“Real Madrid Cafe is consistent with the developers’ vision of bringing first to market elevated dining and experiential entertainment,” said Lyle Stern, president of Koniver Stern Group, in a release. Stern’s group represented MDM in the leasing deal with the restaurant.

Also in Miami, soccer power Real Madrid will be facing its rival FC Barcelona at Hard Rock Stadium on July 29. “El Clasico Miami,” part of the 2017 International Champions Cup, will mark the first meeting between the Spanish rivals in the United States. Other events, including a meet-and-greet, also are planned as part of the festivities.

http://www.tampabay.com/things-to-do/food/dining/st-pete-restaurant-staple-z-grille-is-closed-for-good/2329209

St. Pete restaurant staple Z Grille is closed for good

ST. PETERSBURG — Zack Gross has joked about closing before, as part of his ongoing April Fool's pranks. But Sunday afternoon, it was for real. Z Grille, one of downtown St. Petersburg's earliest and most long-standing ambitious independent restaurants, has closed.

He didn't want fanfare, he didn't want a throng of diners coming to pay their respects. Nonetheless, ex-employees found their way to the bottom floor of Signature Place on Saturday and Sunday, as did a who's who of Tampa Bay chefs and restaurant folks. David Benstock of Il Ritorno, Greg and Michelle Baker of the Refinery and Fodder & Shine, Brad Dixon of Bern's Steak House, Jason Ruhe of Brick and Mortar, Chris Fernandez of the Red Mesa group — they all came to clink glasses with Gross and his wife-partner Jennifer, and maybe grab a last plate of Dr. Pepper ribs or deviled eggs.

Z Grille's space at Second Street and First Avenue South has been for sale since September, without a buyer emerging for either the Z Grille concept or the space. Even in the face of financial uncertainty (the Grosses have a lease until 2029), they have decided to call it quits, putting their house on the market with the intention of relocating to Upland, Calif., near Los Angeles.

"We decided we couldn't make it work any longer under the current circumstances. We could have stayed open and struggled more. I'm burned out," Gross said. "My relationships are more important than that place."

So, what happened? While new big-ticket projects like Doc Ford's at St. Petersburg's Pier are being discussed and Mayor Rick Kriseman speaks of studies showing room for more growth in the dining sector, one of downtown's iconic restaurants couldn't make it. The reasons are complicated.

Some may be location: Gross, who was a James Beard semifinalist in 2009, points to two nearby closed restaurants, Station House and the Rowdies Den (which will reopen soon as Ford's Garage), as impediments to foot traffic. Then add in residual scaffolding at Signature Place from improperly installed stucco, and Gross suspects would-be diners didn't know his restaurant was open. It's not Beach Drive, it's not the booming Central Avenue corridor in the EDGE District or Grand Central. Maybe Z Grille was in no man's land.

Gross thinks what really doomed Z Grille was saturation.

"It's true. I'm doing way less money than I was doing before. You've got 20 different options now. There's another 300-seat restaurant going in at the new (Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement), and the Hyatt Place will have restaurants, too," Gross said.

Then, in his characteristic blunt style, he added: "There's a ton of mediocre things going in and a tremendous amount of money had by people with no real skills. It's like I'm the f---ing (Tampa Bay) Rays. I can't compete with these people."

Still, in the world of restaurants, Z Grille has had a long run. It opened in its original Central Avenue location in 2005. Gross relocated to Signature Place in 2008, and took a more upscale approach. It wasn't quite fine dining, but it wasn't a casual stop-in place, either. In 2015, Gross shifted the menu from shock-and-awe, put-an-egg-on-it indulgences to healthier food. The next year, he shifted again, this time to more affordable options.

It has outlived several dozen of the more than 100 restaurants crowding the area between Eighth Street N east to Tampa Bay, and between Second Avenue S and Fourth Avenue N.

Here's a sampling of the defunct: A slew of restaurants at what is now Sundial (Bambu, Grill 121, etc.), Buona Vita, Diner 437, The Garden, Green Chili Indian Bistro, Hammerheads, L'Olivier, Patanegra, Paddy Burkes, St. Pete Brasserie, Yummy Mama, Zapata's. And the future of other enormous projects like Hofbrauhaus St. Petersburg seem wobbly.

On Sunday afternoon, Z Grille joined the list. After selling out of food, the Grosses turned out the lights and put a sign on the door: "On vacation."

BREAKING: Food celebrity possibly captured in Bigfoot-esque downtown St. Pete photo

Could this spiky-haired enigma be Guy Fieri on his way to Buya?

Not an hour ago, we at CL were texted a candid, far-away photo of what appears to be Food Network show host, restauranteur, Donkey Sauce creator, refrigerator racing stripe enthusiast and insanely polarizing pop-cultural figure Guy Fieri getting out of his trademark red Mustang Camaro on downtown St. Pete's Central Avenue.

Is it him?

It sure looks like him. AND, super-hip EDGE District ramen-and-Japanese-whisky destination Buya announced via its Facebook page that the restaurant would be closed for lunch today — and Sunday! — "due to a private event."

Related? Almost certainly. What's going on?

We'd hate to speculate, but could the visored upscale-greasy-spoon aficionado be in town to film a little more coverage of the Bay area's burgeoning food scene?

Maybe he just likes ramen.

And hell, maybe it's not even him.

(It's totally him. Didn't you see the license plate?)

Tampa ranks higher than LA, New York and San Francisco for art buying, report shows

Jun 27, 2017, 6:55am EDT

Tampa is the fourth biggest art buying city in the United States, according to a new report from marketplace Artfinder.

Artfinder examined art buying habits across the country and found that 789 artworks were bought per million Tampa area inhabitants in 2016, more than buyers in New York, Los Angeles or San Francisco, according to a release.

Tallahassee is ranked the top city, with 1,303 artworks bought.

“We are now seeing a new generation and a new kind of art buyer emerging, our audience are typically younger than those who buy from galleries, and they don’t necessarily classify themselves as ‘collectors’ – they’re not buying for investment, they’re buying because they want something handmade by a real person on their wall, something no-one else has got,” said Jonas Almgren, Artfinder’s CEO, in the release.

Locally, St. Petersburg's reputation as an arts destination is growing, as the number of museums increases. Tom James, chairman emeritus of Raymond James Financial Inc., and his wife, Mary, plan to open a museum later this year in downtown St. Pete. The couple have personally invested more than $50 million in the Tom & Mary James Museum of Western + Wildlife Art.

Artfinder discovered regional differences in the art that customers are buying — people in big cities prefer abstract, non-figurative works; those outside of cities prefer animals, flowers and plants and landscapes, sea and sky. Artfinder sells original art from 10,000 artists in 113 countries, according to the release.

See below for a breakdown of the results.

Top 10 U.S. cities (on customers per 1 million inhabitants):

    Tallahassee (1,303)
    New Haven, Connecticut (953)
    Anaheim, California (842)

    Raleigh, North Carolina (770)

Lolita’s Wine Market Now Pouring in Downtown St. Pete

June 27, 2017

Last year, when husband and wife Alex and Kelly Rodriguez adopted Lola, a Golden Retriever/Louisiana Catahoula Hound mix from Golden Retriever Rescue of Mid-Florida (GRRMF), they had no idea it would drive them and friend CF Hawkins to open a wine bar.  You see, Lola is sassy and has a penchant for trouble.  “When Lola is bad, we call her ‘Lolita’ and when she is bad, she causes us to drink. So, in order to afford to drink good wine, we had to open a wine market.  So here’s to Lola!” says Kelly with a grin.

Lolita’s Wine Market quietly launched last week at 16 18th Street South in the Grand Central District of St. Pete.  The space is a cozy 974 square feet — just enough room for around 25-30 people.  And the vibe is comfortable and laid-back.  “We want people to feel like they are coming to somebody’s house, not necessarily to a restaurant that they have to get dressed up for.  We like to describe it as a wine shop meets coffee shop concept,” says Kelly.

Lolita’s specializes in wines from all over the globe, not just American or regional wines.  The focus will be on boutique wines and interesting blends and varietals.  Kelly, who is developing the wine program, said she wants to take a good-better-best approach by offering a little bit of everything — everyday drinking wines, mid-tier wines and some pinnacle wines.

Guy Fieri in Tampa buying fireworks? Eating ramen in St. Pete? Food Network star spotted across Tampa Bay

Perhaps you've heard that celebrity chef, Food Network host and hair icon Guy Fieri was all up in St. Petersburg last week.

He was filming Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, but apparently his Tampa Bay encounters went beyond the one he had with a steaming bowl of Buya's ramen.

Phantom Fireworks on Gandy Boulevard in South Tampa posted some photos on their Facebook page after Fieri stopped in to buy fireworks there — around $2,000 worth of them, a store manager later estimated.

America’s biggest and best upcoming sports stadiums

There’s nothing more American than sports, so just in time for America’s birthday, here’s a look at some of the biggest stadium projects in the works—from the world’s most expensive stadium to a celebrity-backed soccer field.

Banc of California Stadium (Los Angeles Football Club)

The 22,000-seat and $250 million stadium for the LAFC is now under construction. Designed by Gensler in a “European-style” arrangement with steeply-raked and sweeping seating areas, the open-air stadium is meant to bring viewers in a closer relationship to the field and players.

David Beckham’s Major League Soccer stadium

Soccer star David Beckham is making moves with a Populous-designed, 25-000 seat stadium. What’s catching attention, however, is not the celebrity attachment: it’s that there won’t be parking. Instead, fans are expected to use Metromover, Metrorail, water taxis, ridesharing, and plain-old walking to get to the stadium.

The Portland Timbers’ stadium expansion

Allied Works Architecture (AWA) has unveiled designs for a $50 million expansion to the 91-year-old soccer stadium in Portland, Oregon’s Providence Park, home to the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns soccer teams. The stadium expansion, according to information on the AWA website, is conceptually inspired by William Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London and will aim to add roughly 4,000 seats to the existing stadium complex.
