Are the lower divisions playing a losing game?

By J Hutcherson (Sep 12, 2017) US Soccer Players - The immediate question is which lower divisions? In England, the lower divisions are chasing a Premier League dream. Even the nice and cuddly clubs dedicated to their local communities and in no position to chase expensive by their standards moves. They're all looking at the pyramid and wondering "what if?". None of them are going to happily self relegate rather than take the Premier League's money. There's no such thing as "thanks but no thanks" in that competitive environment.

In Scotland, the lower divisions are a problem with clubs needing to meet minimums for the topflight. The Scottish Premier League doesn't hold the promise of ridiculous riches. Whether or not playing for 2nd or 3rd in a league dominated by one club now and two clubs historically holds much allure is an open question.

Meanwhile, across the North Sea there are Dutch clubs that have turned down promotion from amateur to the professional level. That became such a trend that the Dutch leagues restructured the third division and made promotion mandatory. It's worth pointing out that their topflight has one club playing in a stadium with a listed capacity of 4500 and another at 8k. Those wouldn't be out of place in the fourth division.

In North America, the only promotion from the lower divisions to MLS is economic. Teams from the NASL and USL chase that dream, needing acceptance as an expansion franchise and writing a significant check. In Mexico, winning promotion takes multiple years and occasionally ends up with the promoted team getting bought out by the relegated team.

Kickers midfielder played key role in victory against Orlando City B

TAMPA, Fla. – Richmond Kickers midfielder Sunny Jane has been voted the USL Player of the Week for Week 25 of the 2017 season. Jane recorded a goal and also set up the game-winner, as the Kickers handed Orlando City B a 2-0 defeat last Thursday at Orlando City Stadium to break OCB’s 12-game undefeated streak.

Jane received 32 percent of the poll conducted by a national panel of independent media representing every USL market. Tampa Bay Rowdies forward Georgi Hristov finished second with 26 percent of the poll.

SOCCER DEAL A PIPE DREAM: Last year the Miami-Dade County Commission voted to direct 25% of all profits from the sale of county-owned property to the affordable housing trust fund. At its last meeting, Commissioner Xavier Suárez asked if the $9 million property the county is to sell to Miami Beckham United to construct the Major League Soccer stadium would go to the fund. The Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department owns the 2.79-acre property and it falls under its trust agreement, the budget department said. If the sale is completed, the most recent legislation from July “directs the proceeds of the sale to be deposited in WASD’s [fund],” and it would not benefit the affordable housing trust.

Derek Smethurst

The South African-born forward played professionally in England with Chelsea and Millwall in the late 1960s and early ‘70s. He came to the United States to play in the NASL in 1975. Smethurst would become the Tampa Bay Rowdies all-time leading scorer with 57 goals in 65 games. His scoring grabbed the attention of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs signed Smethurst without even a tryout. Smethurst was ultimately cut after preseason, never playing in an NFL game. Smethurst would play for the San Diego Sockers and Seattle Sounders. He retired in 1987 as a member of the Rowdies.

Count the Atlanta United FC soccer club among those opening their doors to displaced Floridians.

On Saturday, the Major League Soccer franchise took in the USF men's soccer team, whose return home following Friday night's 2-0 loss at Creighton in Omaha, Neb., was thwarted by the frightening trajectory of Hurricane Irma.

USF spokesperson Erin Bean said the Atlanta club gave the Bulls use of its practice facility, helped them find lodging at a nearby hotel, and is assisting with meals. The Bulls also are expected to attend Atlanta United FC's home match Sunday against FC Dallas at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

"Since beginning play at Yankee Stadium in 1971, the New York Cosmos have won a record total of 8 professional soccer championships and brought some of the biggest stars in international soccer to the USA including Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, Giorgio Chinaglia, Carlos Alberto, and more recently, Raul and Marcos Senna. Investing millions of dollars to build upon the rich history of America's most iconic soccer brand was my way of giving back to the game that has given so much to me.

I invested in the New York Cosmos eight months ago with the expectation that the United States Soccer Federation would allow us to play at the division 2 level ong enough for me to work with the NASL's leadership to strengthen and grow our league. I am, therefore, shocked by the USSF's withdrawal of Division 2 sanctioning beyond the 2017 season. That decision is, in my view, completely arbitrary and unfair, particularly since the NASL is making progress in developing and implementing plans to grow the league and enhance its stability.

I want to assure the Cosmos' loyal fans, players, employees and sponsors, as well as the many others with a stake in the team's continued success, that the Cosmos plan to play quality soccer during the remainder of the 2017 season and that I will do everything within my power to reverse the USSF's decision."

When Atlanta and their NFL franchise announced that they will be breaking ground to a new stadium, they wanted to shoot for the stars and redefine the benchmark. After nine years of planning and constructing the new stadium, Atlanta last night debuted their first big game at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. While it's a magnificent piece of architecture, one feature in particular catches the photographer's eye more than others. Let's take a look!

The architecture firm, HOK, was given the challenge by the client to innovate on the highest level of every aspect of the stadium that seats 71,000. They found inspiration by the Romans on how sunlight passes through the oculus on the roof of the Pantheon. The aperture-like roof is made up of eight triangular ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) “leaves". The semi-transparent roof open and closes like a camera using 16 tracks; the roof takes eight minutes to open and close. As you can see, the roof mimics a lens' aperture from going 'wide-open' to a closed aperture.
