MLS expansion hopefuls Tampa Bay Rowdies sold to MLB’s Tampa Bay Rays

October 3 – One of the best-known club names in US football, the Tampa Bay Rowdies, who boasted English legend Rodney Marsh and Brazil’s Mirandinha on their roster in the late 1970s, have been sold to the Tampa Bay Rays Major League Baseball team.

No financial terms were given for the sale of the Rowdies, who were bought by Bill Edwards in 2013 who invested significantly in the Al Lang Stadium and expressed an ambition to move towards the MLS. The Rowdies currently play in the USL Championship, having moved over from the NASL in 2017.

Edwards bought the club when they were on the verge of bankruptcy. They are currently battling for a place in the USL play-offs.

Last year a St. Petersburg referendum voted in favour of an improvement of the Al Lang Stadium which would cost up to $80 million and increase capacity from 7,500 to 18,000. Edwards was to provide the finance and the MLS was positive about the positioning of the Rowdies as one of the MLS expansion clubs.

The sale to the MLB team will bring the Rowdies into a sports investor group with considerably more leverage in the local market. Rays presidents Matthew Silverman and Brian Auld will become vice chairmen of the Rowdies, overseeing all aspects of the club alongside Rowdies VP & COO Lee Cohen.

“We are committed to continuing the upward trajectory that the Rowdies have been experiencing under Bill’s visionary leadership,” said Silverman. “The Tampa Bay Rowdies are a legendary soccer team, and we look forward to extending their legacy and prominence.”

The Rays have long had their own plans for a $1 billion replacement of their Tropicana stadium with the site of the Al Lang Stadium having been one of the venue options suggested 20 years ago. The Rays haven’t been able to progress those plans though the expanded sports group opens up a number of possibilities and perhaps the incentive to upgrade more ambitiously.

TAMPA BAY RAYS: THE SURPRISE OF THE 2018 MLB SEASON

It is now the fans turn to make things happen. The Rays are looking to build a new stadium in Tampa.

Ownership made an exciting move yesterday. Rays ownership purchased the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Now the why would they do that? The answer is simple. Now they can put two teams in the new stadium. They also want to take the current stadium the Rowdies play in and bring the Rays back to St. Petersburg for spring training. This would now have St. Petersburg and Tampa be a part of the Tampa Bay Rays moving forward.

Things are looking bright for the Tampa Bay Rays, and Rowdies and my article seems pretty wrong.

City says the stone has to go at St. Pete’s new Oak & Stone restaurant

The city of St. Petersburg wants Oak & Stone to remove the stone facade on the pillars near the restaurant's main entrance at 199 Central Ave, St. Petersburg. [SCOTT KEELER | Times]

ST. PETERSBURG — It will still be "Oak & Stone" but the stone will soon be gone.

The owners of a popular new restaurant in downtown St. Petersburg have agreed — reluctantly — to strip the stone veneer from three columns that the city says are currently incompatible with the rest of the building, a Hyatt Place hotel.

"We are disappointed to have to remove the beautiful stonework and part of our namesake from the exterior of our downtown St. Pete location," owners Brett Decklever and Joe Seidensticker said in a statement Friday. ‘‘We feel it is inviting and attractive and also part of our brand name."

The Hyatt, which opened a year ago at 25 2nd St. N, is built in a sleek modern style with white-stuccoed walls and large aluminum-trimmed windows. An area on the southwest corner of the building was set aside for Oak & Stone.

In March, an architect for the restaurant emailed the city’s urban design chief, Corey Malyszka, about adding stone veneer to the existing columns. Malyszka told him that wouldn’t be allowed because design regulations in the downtown area require any modifications to "complement or match the architectural style of the building."

Nonetheless, the restaurant opened in July with columns encased in chunks of stone to a height of about eight feet. After receiving a notice of violation, the restaurant applied for an after-the fact variance.

"We’re so proud to be part of the downtown St. Petersburg community," the owners’ statement said. "As a new community member, we’ve already hired 125 local staff." The restaurant also supports the Tampa Bay Rowdies and Academy Prep St. Pete, a middle school for low-income students.

St. Petersburg is the second location for Oak & Stone. The other is in Sarasota — and it will keep its stone columns.

The Rowdies news that made this super fan’s day

ST. PETERSBURG — The first question at Tuesday morning's press conference came from a woman draped in Rowdies green and gold. Would they keep the stadium a soccer field, Mary Karnstedt, 70, asked, a slight waiver in her voice, or would a pitcher's mound replace her beloved Rowdies?

She held a tissue close as she awaited the answer. The Rowdies aren't just an occasional hobby for Karnstedt. They're a family. She and her husband are season ticket holders. She remembers learning the Rowdies song — "they're a kick in the grass" — more than 40 years ago. She's crocheted scarves to award players when they score their first goal.

Edwards wore one during Monday's announcement. He wore another in New York City when pitching MLS to come to St. Petersburg.

So when the answer came quickly from Edwards — "The Rowdies will play at Al Lang" — the tears came quickly to Karnstedt.

"Oh, I am definitely so reassured," she told the Times. "The Rowdies are so family oriented. We all feel like we know them.

"We didn't want to lose Al Lang to a baseball team."

On the field

Rowdies players and coaches were also relieved after hearing the Rays would buy their club. The team is nearing the end of another long season and is fighting for a playoff spot. Head coach Neill Collins not only had to worry about the standings, but about the future of his club as well.

"You have to go into this with an open mind," Collins said. "Bill (Edwards) said it would be good for the club and you have to take him at his word. I think it's exciting times around here."

St. Petersburg is a soccer town?

The Rays said all kinds of nice things Tuesday about investing to make the soccer team more successful in downtown St. Petersburg while at the same time working to move the baseball team to Tampa because it can't make it there.

Team president Matt Silverman said it is not as contradictory and convoluted as it might seem.

"Each franchise needs to be able to stand on its own two feet,'' Silverman told the Times. "We believe that the Rowdies can excel at Al Lang in that venue with the number of games it plays and the cadence of its schedule.

"And we believe that the Rays have a great chance to thrive in Ybor City with the ballpark plan that we've presented there. The goal with Ybor has always been to put the Rays in the best chance to succeed and we're pursuing that plan, and it's full speed ahead on that as we work towards the year-end deadline.''

More events at Al Lang

Edwards will retain control of booking concerts at Al Lang which has been a relatively new and growing business, and Silverman said the Rays will seek to bring in other events, public, private, corporate. For example, he said there are requests they can't accommodate at the Trop that could work at Al Lang, such as corporate parties.

"Any opportunity we can get to bring people into downtown St. Pete, whether it's Tropicana Field or Al Lang Stadium is important to the city and it adds commerce and activity and vitality to the area,'' he said. "It's one of the great things that sports teams and venues can do for a city.''

https://www.tampabay.com/things-to-do/music/Rays-Rowdies-deal-Concerts-at-Al-Lang-Stadium-will-expand-in-2019_172310343

Rays-Rowdies deal: Concerts at Al Lang Stadium will expand in 2019

The concerts will continue at Al Lang Stadium. Even more of them, actually.

In announcing Tuesday that the Rays are purchasing the Rowdies from St. Petersburg business and entertainment magnate Bill Edwards, officials on both sides said Edwards will continue booking live music at the Rowdies’ city-owned home stadium, including an expanded slate of concerts in 2019 under the moniker "Al Lang Live."

"The whole goal is to get eight or 10 a year, maybe 11," said Edwards, whose company Big3 Entertainment also programs the adjacent Mahaffey Theater. "This is the most perfect place, Al Lang, to have a concert."

Edwards’ management contract with the city has required him to book at least 10 nonsoccer events there throughout each year. This summer, he teamed up with promotions giant Live Nation on three outdoor concerts — Poison, 3 Doors Down and Counting Crows — that drew in total more than 15,000 fans to the soccer pitch at Al Lang. (A planned fourth, Lauryn Hill, was canceled due to production issues.)

Edwards said his group and Live Nation are already discussing possible Al Lang shows for 2019.

"They’re a huge company, and they have all the great acts," he said. "We are so happy to have them in our theater and in our ballpark."

While the Rays will now assume management of Al Lang, they have contracted Edwards to continue booking shows there. The goal is "to keep bringing thousands and thousands of people here throughout the calendar year," said Matt Silverman, the Rays’ president for baseball operations.

"I know he has big plans to grow the Al Lang Live concert series, and we’ll be there to assist him along the way," Silverman said. "Together we’re going to add a deeper slate of events and activities at Al Lang, and contribute even more to the vitality of downtown St. Pete."

The Rays have their own history with live music, hosting postgame concerts at Tropicana Field for more than a decade until this year. But Joe Jimenez, managing director of the Edwards Group, which encompasses Big3, doesn’t anticipate getting involved with reviving live music there. Midsize, boutique spaces like Al Lang have in recent years grown more enticing to national promoters, and it’s a venue size the Tampa Bay area has long lacked.

"This is the pocket: 4,000 to 7,000 (fans), intimate, up close, downtown, with this as a backdrop," said Jimenez said, gesturing to St. Petersburg’s sunny South Yacht Basin out the window. "The people that went to the shows, the reviews, were just incredible."

New pro-rel soccer league formulated in the US

A new proposed soccer league system incorporating promotion and relegation has been formulated in the United States.

The National Soccer League (NSL) is a proposed open system that will, according to a business plan acquired by SportBusiness, provide access and opportunity to every independent club beginning with local and state leagues administered by state associations all the way up to a professional national league.

Sources indicate to SportBusiness that the league system will look to engage existing clubs and leagues that are currently outside Major League Soccer, a single-entity league that is sanctioned as the top-tier division by the US Soccer Federation. The NSL does plan to be officially sanctioned by either the USSF or one of its affiliate associations.

Under the proposed rules to govern the structure, the individual leagues are owned by participating clubs for governance purposes and revenue distribution. The proposal indicates the NSL will bring revenue to the system of connected leagues through sponsorships, media rights, and other commercial partnerships.

The league system also plans to have a youth league, the NYSL. The NYSL plans to create regional youth leagues based on metro markets and population density to  minimize operating costs and travel.

Beckham wants AC Milan target in the MLS

Football icon David Beckham is reportedly in talks to sign Monaco star and AC Milan target Radamel Falcao to sign the Colombian at Inter Miami FC.

Falcao has rejuvenated his career at Monaco following failed loan spells at Manchester United and Chelsea. This season, the striker has appeared in 7 Ligue 1 games for Monaco and has already scored thrice.

The Sun in England state that Beckham wants Falcao at his new MLS franchise and the talks for a possible move have already started.

Falcao has been linked with a move to AC Milan as well over the past few months, but Beckham's new MLS franchise won't be in action till 2020 as that's when they will open their club. And that is months before Falcao's contract at Monaco expires.

Fellow MLS side Colombus Crew are also said to be interested in bringing Falcao to the US and he could be tempted to move to Miami because of the big Hispanic population in the city, say the Sun.

Baseball diamonds as soccer pitches

The United Soccer League is expanding its freshly-renamed USL Championship aggressively for 2019, and will add another baseball diamond to the stadiums used in Bethlehem Steel’s conference.

Seven new teams enter the league all together, with four of them east of the Mississippi. The east has three known departures, Toronto, Richmond, and Cincinnati, and none play home games on an infield with a pitcher’s mound. One fourth of the teams in the east used such as home fields this season.

Stadiums

The governing federation’s sanctioning criteria require Division Two teams to have stadia of 5,000 seats. Minor league baseball provides that.

New stadiums are slow and expensive to build, and that’s after real estate acquisition. USL’s announced Chicago franchise is building one and will enter the league in 2020. MLS’s most recent additions, Banc of California Stadium and Audi Field, further illustrate the time and money involved.

Owners moving more quickly and wanting revenues at speed must use stadia already built.

Baseball and professional soccer share the summer. So playing the beautiful game on active diamonds requires repeated, rapid conversions from skinned infields and mounds to flat pitches and back again.

Bethlehem Steel FC head coach Brendan Burke has already coached on the four 2018 examples below, and will do so on a fifth next season.

1. Penn FC’s FNB Field in Harrisburg, PA.

2. Louisville City FC’s Louisville Slugger Field.

3. Atlanta United 2’s The Proving Ground at Coolray Field in Gwinnett, GA.

4. Nashville SC’s First Tennessee Park.

5. Memphis 901 FC’s Auto Zone Park.

That would be 29% of his regular season away games next season, without allowing for the extra games needed to make a 34 game regular season work. Burke is on record that playing soccer on a baseball diamond “is not good for the game.”

Not good for the game: Water

Anyone who watched Nashville SC host Charleston Battery at First Tennessee Park in a downpour Saturday night September 22 agrees without reservation.

The temporary grass superimposed on the infield dirt drained more slowly than the permanent grass of the infield and the outfield.

The patches over the infield dirt, the pitcher’s mound, and the third-base line accumulated water. By the second half the water badly distorted passes along the ground. They threw rooster tails and sometimes slowed almost to a stop. And the water affected traction.

One goal mouth was two-thirds covered by the mess, as was much of the penalty area rectangle directly in front of goal and the irregular shape beyond to the outfield arc 30 and 40 yards away from the net. Every other converted diamond has one of its goal mouths affected in similar fashion.

The only thing missing In Nashville’s rain was churned, grassless, rutted mud and mirrors of standing water.

Eleven days earlier, F.C. Cincinnati fans were agreeing with Burke, too. At Louisville Slugger field in a comparable rainstorm, Corben Bone’s winning goal for the Blue and Orange was almost stopped short of the goal line by water saturating that temporary surface.

The puddle was just behind the keeper’s late dive and just in front of his goal. The initial rocket struck water, trickled softly to the post, and gently kissed across the line. Not good for the game indeed.

Not good for the game: Playing surface

When diamonds are dry or only moderately wet, Burke makes three criticisms.

1. Playing surfaces are not uniform by height. There are hazards at the lips of the infield dirt that bounce balls crossing them. And the different surface heights distort pass weighting.

2. The ball’s playing characteristics differ between varying types of surface, whether both are natural or one is artificial.

3. The traction provided by the two different surfaces is not equally secure.

Consider six-yard kicks. On such a field when taking one, the goal keeper always moves the ball to a place in the permanent grass. Uniformly, referees acknowledge the traction problem by allowing the adjustment they would otherwise always forbid had it been made on a uniform surface.

No minor-league club has the resources necessary to do what NYCFC does to make its temporary and permanent Yankee Stadium playing surfaces safely compatible.

But current conditions on eastern conference USL baseball diamonds seem hazardous, and are definitely game-altering.

Not good for the game: Pitch size

Coach Burke has not discussed the pitch-size limits imposed on play by a stadium built for a baseball club.

Peter Vermes’ feet have. Once on an early SKC visit to Yankee Stadium, pre-game television showed the Sporting KC head coach pacing off the touchline distance from midfield to the end line. Yankee Stadium is about 20 yards short and 10 yards narrow.

Temporary? Hopefully.

Other USL Championship owners may follow the example of Louisville City FC and take on the necessary time and expense to build soccer specific stadiums.

In the Nashville-Charleston downpour, the massive water-logged area in front of one goal was unfortunate.

Thank goodness that game’s injured were not harmed long-term.

There is an empty baseball stadium in Camden. A defunct minor league team. That stadium would be perfect to host a ‘minor’ league footy team. At least, it wouldn’t be a dual purpose stadium.

I have heard that the stadium will be removed from future dorms. Not that it will happen. And that place would be an awesome venue!

Atlantic City has an empty stadium as well, just waiting for a tenant that can draw more than the series of low level minor league baseball teams that have failed to draw there. And the old AC racetrack would provide enough room for a world class pitch. Not much farther than Chester with better parking. Just sayin.

Forgot about the Sandcastle. And the grass would grow really well on an old horse track. Pre fertilized!

From your front page on this article-“Not so much, not even with the oil billions in the Bronx.”

The Steinbrenners own the stadium, not City Football Group. Unless you were just being pithy and facts were secondary.

Rays purchase USL soccer team Tampa Bay Rowdies

The team announced Tuesday the purchase of the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the United Soccer League, who play their home games at Al Lang Stadium, the onetime waterfront spring training home of the Rays. Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays are getting into the soccer business.

The team announced Tuesday the purchase of the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the United Soccer League, who play their home games at Al Lang Stadium, the onetime waterfront spring training home of the Rays.

The sale price was not disclosed.

The USL said Rays team presidents Matthew Silverman and Brian Auld will become vice chairmen of the Rowdies. They will direct all aspects of the soccer club, along with Rowdies vice president and chief operating officer Lee Cohen.

“The sale is bittersweet,” said Bill Edwards, who had owned the Rowdies since December 2013 and invested millions in stadium improvements.

“When I purchased the Rowdies, they were on the brink of bankruptcy; today they are champions fighting for their rightful spot in the USL Playoffs,” Edwards added. “I saw the potential of the team and what it could mean for downtown St. Petersburg.”

Silverman said the Rays are “committed to continuing the winning trajectory that the Rowdies have been experiencing” under Edwards’ guidance.

Rays to buy Rowdies, Al Lang Stadium

ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - Ownership of the Tampa Bay Rays announced Tuesday they would buy the Rowdies and Al Lang Stadium, but many are still asking why a major league baseball team want to get into the soccer business.

He wouldn't give a price tag, but Rowdies owner Bill Edwards says the Rays will take over the Rowdies at the end of the season, along with a contract with the city of St. Pete to control Al Lang Stadium.

“The Rays are committed to our ballpark plan in Ybor and the Rowdies are committed to playing at Al Lang... each with unique cultures that we will nourish,” Tampa Bay Rays’ Matt Silverman said.

There's been a lot of speculation on the takeover, but it’s important to consider the history.

Back in 2008, the Rays proposed building a new baseball stadium at the Al Lang site.

Right now, the Rays are working to get funding to leave Tropicana Field for Ybor City, despite the fact that it would be much cheaper for them to stay in St. Pete, where there're more tax dollars than in Tampa.

The team and Edwards say there's no connection.

“There's no conspiracy... We made it clear [the Rowdies] had to play here for the next five years, at least and they will and they agreed to it,” Edwards said.

The Rowdies tried and failed to get into Major League Soccer last year. While fans still have questions, after Tuesday’s announcement, they hope this could take their Rowdies to the next level.

Tampa Bay Rays purchase USL Rowdies

The Tampa Bay Rays are getting in the soccer business.

The owners of the Major League Baseball team purchased the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Tuesday, outgoing Rowdies owner Bill Edwards announced. The Rowdies are currently a member of the second-tier United Soccer League but ultimately hope to move up to Major League Soccer.

The sale includes the Rowdies' home, Al Lang Stadium, in St. Petersburg, Fla.

"I am incredibly grateful to Bill for the tremendous investment he has made in the Rowdies and Al Lang Stadium, and the passion he brought to the Tampa Bay sports community and to the soccer community globally," Rowdies vice president and chief operating officer Lee Cohen said, according to MLSsoccer.com. "I have spent some time with (Rays president Matthew Silverman) and I look forward to continuing to build on the successes we have had over the last five years and ensuring a seamless transition for our amazing supporters and fans."

Edwards said in a statement, "The sale is bittersweet. When I purchased the Rowdies, they were on the brink of bankruptcy; today they are champions fighting for their rightful spot in the USL Playoffs. I saw the potential of the team, and what it could mean for downtown St. Petersburg. I invested my blood, sweat, tears and money, and built an amazing staff that I could not be more proud of."

The city of St. Petersburg previously approved a plan by the Rowdies to spend up to $80 million to boost capacity at Al Lang Stadium from 7,500 to 18,000 to help their chances of earning the right to move to MLS.

Rays president Matt Silverman told the Tampa Bay Times on Monday that the purchase of the Rowdies won't affect the baseball team's plans to build a new domed stadium in Tampa, Fla.

"We are committed to continuing the upward trajectory that the Rowdies have been experiencing under Bill's visionary leadership," Silverman told the newspaper. "The Tampa Bay Rowdies are a legendary soccer team, and we look forward to extending their legacy and prominence. We are eager to get to know Ralph's Mob and all the Rowdies fans, to growing soccer in St. Petersburg and throughout Tampa Bay, and of course, bringing home a championship, which could be imminent."

With three games remaining in the USL season, the Rowdies are 11-13-7 for 40 points, leaving them in 11th place in the Eastern Conference. They are four points out of eighth place, the last playoff position.

Top Rays executive: Rowdies purchase is an ‘exciting business opportunity’

Tampa Bay Rays' Matt Silverman addresses Tuesday's press conference next to Tampa Bay Rowdies' Bill Edwards.

After buying the Tampa Bay Rowdies, the Tampa Bay Rays will reinvest proceeds from Rowdies’ games back into the soccer club.

Matt Silverman, president of baseball operations for the Rays, declined to disclose the purchase price, but talked about the economics behind the deal after a Tuesday morning news conference confirming the sale, which was widely reported Monday.

“It’s an exciting business opportunity and it’s a community asset,” Silverman told St. Pete Catalyst. “Just like with the Rays, we’re going to pour back in the revenues to enhance the product and the fan experience and make it a great thing for our fans.”

Silverman said there are potential cost-savings as well as revenue enhancements.

“There’s some back offices synergies in terms of shared services and shared personnel,” he said. “The more exciting part is the way we can cross-promote and we can learn from each other’s organizations. You have two organizations that have been doing great work. Each have their own ideas and areas of expertise. I think when we combine those and we share those ideas, both organizations are going to come out stronger.”

The purchase will close after the Rowdies finish their current season. Their last game is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 14. Pending City Council approval, the Rays also will take over the existing contract with the City of St. Petersburg for management of Al Lang Stadium, where the Rowdies play their home games.

The agreement with the city continues through 2020, said Bill Edwards, the current Rowdies owner, but the Rays have agreed to keep the Rowdies in St. Petersburg for five years, Edwards said.

Rays - Rowdies Press Conference

Tampa Bay Rowdies owner Bill Edwards sits next to Rays owner Matt Silverman

The city agreement also requires the primary use of Al Lang be for soccer and the Rowdies, said Mayor Rick Kriseman.

The city benefitted financially from the Rowdies’ presence, Kriseman said.

“At 9 o’clock when the games are over, all the fans that have been at the game leave the stadium and they’re all around downtown. You see the yellow and green color everywhere downtown,” Kriseman said. “That’s dollars being spent in our restaurants, being spent in our shops and galleries. We love that. That’s what it’s all about.”

Big3 Entertainment Group, headed by Edwards, will continue the Al Lang concert series, Silverman said.

“Together we’re going to add a deeper slate of events and activities to Al Lang and contribute even more to the vitality of downtown St. Pete,” Silverman said.

During the news conference, Silverman emphasized the Rays’ commitment to St. Petersburg, even while the baseball club plans to build a new ballpark in Ybor City. He addressed that issue head on.

“Some obvious questions are being asked, especially what this might mean for our Ybor ballpark plans. The answer is simple. There is no connection. The Rays are committed to our ballpark plan in Ybor and we are committed to the Rowdies playing at Al Lang,” Silverman said.

The Rays and Rowdies will be operated as separate organizations, he said.

The Rays are not the only baseball organization to take an ownership stake in a soccer team.

In May, Tom Ricketts, the owner and chairman of the Chicago Cubs, acquired a majority position in a United Soccer League expansion team planned for Chicago. In January, the USL said it would bring an expansion team to Memphis, Tennessee for 2019, under the ownership of a group led by Peter Freund and Craig Unger, owners of the Memphis Redbirds, the AAA affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.

It’s a testament to the growing popularity of soccer, said Jake Edwards, president of the US, at the news conference.

Jake Edwards, Kriseman and Silverman all expressed gratitude to Edwards, who said the Rowdies were insolvent when he bought the team in 2013. Since then, he’s spent millions of dollars in stadium renovations, player and coaching personnel, youth soccer development and more.

Edwards said he’s had lots of offers to buy the team but he wanted to keep the team local. He said he knows Silverman well – the two are neighbors – and they’ve had a lot of conversations that convinced Edwards a sale to the Rays was the right course of action.

“I’ve done the things I was supposed to do,” Edwards said. “Mission accomplished. I’m out.”

Romano: Rays? Rowdies? Let the conspiracy theories begin!

As boring as it may be, the last explanation really probably is why they bought them.

But if you think about it, it does show the owners commitment to the TB area. If they were ready to jump ship out of TB, this doesn’t seem like it. At least thats what I get out of it.

Romano: Rays? Rowdies? Let the conspiracy theories begin!

Is this what a midlife crisis looks like for a baseball owner?

Instead of an expensive sports car or a hip new tattoo, you buy the keys to the waterfront stadium that was once the ballpark of your dreams?

Because this purchase of the Tampa Bay Rowdies by the Tampa Bay Rays ownership seems, if you’ll pardon the phrase, straight out of leftfield.

You’ve been trying to move your baseball team out of downtown St. Petersburg, and now you’ve bought a soccer team a few blocks away? You’re negotiating with Hillsborough County about the amount of money you can afford to put into a baseball stadium, and now you’re investing in a soccer team?

It’s almost as if they’re buying conspiracy theories in bulk now.

"This was so unexpected, I’m sure those thoughts are going to cross a lot of people’s minds,’’ said St. Petersburg City Council member Darden Rice. "I’m still putting the puzzle together myself.’’

So let’s take some of the theories one at a time:

Theory: This is an enticement to get the baseball stadium built in Ybor City. Reality: Probably not.

It’s true the Rowdies’ lease at Al Lang Stadium is up in 2020, and so the soccer team would be free to move to Tampa if the Ybor stadium opens as scheduled in 2023. But there would likely be logistical problems with the artificial turf, not to mention scheduling problems for sports that overlap.

RELATED: The Rays are buying the Rowdies. What does it mean for Tampa Bay?

Theory: Once the Rays leave for Ybor, they will bring spring training back to St. Pete at Al Lang. Reality: Farfetched.

Most everyone agrees Port Charlotte has not been a perfect spring training site, but Al Lang would require extensive renovation, and it does not fit the modern model of having an entire complex with multiple practice fields. Plus, the Port Charlotte lease still has close to a decade remaining.

Theory: The Ybor plan is going poorly, and the Rays are going to take another shot at building on the Al Lang site. Reality: Dream on.

The Ybor stadium still has massive financial hurdles that must be navigated, but that does not change the dynamics that killed the St. Pete waterfront plan proposed by the Rays in 2008. It would take a referendum to allow new construction on the Al Lang site, the stadium would have to be crammed in a small area, and there’s still the question of whether St. Pete can support Major League Baseball.

So where does that leave us?

With a much more boring explanation.

It’s possible this was a deal the Rays simply could not pass up. No one is talking publicly about the purchase price, but there are whispers the Rowdies were sold dirt cheap.

If that’s the case, the purchase makes more sense. The Rays have experience running a sports franchise, and already have infrastructure in place for marketing, ticketing, training staff and other departments. That would seemingly give them a better shot at turning a profit than Rowdies owner Bill Edwards.

Could it be that simple?

The story line isn’t as sexy, but yeah.

We are a little more than a month away from the 10th anniversary of what should have been a November referendum on a waterfront stadium at the Al Lang site. That idea crashed and burned so spectacularly that the Rays pulled the referendum months before the election.

They still don’t have their new baseball stadium, but they finally got a waterfront view.

Behind the deal: Rowdies owner Bill Edwards talks about how the Rays deal came together and what’s next for him

Text version for those without subscription: After the Tampa Bay Rays announced Monday that the team plans to buy the Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer club and gain control of Al Lang Stadium on the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront, Rowdies owner Bill Edwards talked extensively with the Tampa Bay Business Journal about how the deal came about.

Edwards, a real estate and entertainment investor, acquired the Rowdies in 2013. Edwards moved the Rowdies to the Tampa-based United Soccer League from the North American Soccer League in 2017. Since then, he’s invested $40 million into the team and the Rowdies have tripled revenue, he told sister news organization the Sports Business Journal in May, when it first reported the team was up for sale. SBJ cited “industry sources” which pegged the team’s value at more than $25 million, as expansion fees for the USL now eclipse $5 million. Those fees were less than $1 million five years ago. Other recent USL team sales are now into the eight figures, SBJ reported.

The Rowdies are making a playoff push this year. In 2017, the team finished with the third-best record in the USL’s Eastern Conference. Last year, the Rowdies set multiple club records, including averaging more than 5,663 fans per game.

What was important to you in this transaction? This is a solid deal. It’s the right thing for the organization. That much I know. When [the Rays] started talking to me, my first concern was, and I made this part and parcel to our agreement, that the Rowdies have to play in downtown for the next five years. It’s an ironic situation. I took over the Rowdies when someone encouraged me to do so because the Rays were leaving and that would mean no professional sports team in St. Pete and how terrible that would be for the community. I bought the Rowdies and we’re finishing our fifth season and the Rays are still here and will still be here for another five years at least, no matter what happens in Ybor City.

How did the deal come together? Rays President Matt Silverman has been on the ground in this town and with the Rays 13-plus years. I have gotten to know him. I’ve never met [Rays Principal Owner] Stu Sternberg, but I saw Matt at lot at panels and speeches and events, and the relationship developed. He’s a nice guy and a St. Pete citizen and he doesn’t live far from me.

I’m surprised that you never met Stu. Why not? I never met Stu because he delegates to people like Matt. The Rays looked at the Rowdies prior to me buying them. They have been looking at the Rowdies for years. If anything, it’s a good investment. The Rowdies are a historical team that is still playing pro soccer and the history goes back to 1975. [The Rays] saw the same thing I did. I believe in what they have to say to me and this is great for the Rowdies. I have accomplished my mission and have had five years of it. It’s a great team and has great fans. To me, if we ever gave the team up, we wanted it to give it to someone locally to take care of it and I believe that they will. We’ve talked about this quite a while off and on. It didn’t surprise me that they looked at it. It took a while for us to assure them what a good team they were getting into. It’s another winning team.

What is the Rays’ motivation? They own other businesses within this community that people don’t know about. They are involved in other things. Matt [Silverman, Rays co-president], has been here 13 years and believes in the community and the Rowdies. He drove the train down the tracks and made this happen. Another local group made offers but Matt was in first and he fulfilled the requirements. He’s been here longer than the other group and I’ve had time to get to know him. He is a solid guy and means what he says. I trust him and that trust is the most important part of what made this happen.

Talk about Al Lang Stadium control. For the Rowdies, all they are doing is taking an existing [management] agreement and transferring it and they are not asking for anything longer. It’s up to the Rays and the Rowdies and to Matt to discuss later. All we have is the use agreement and we want to hand it off to them as part of the transition — and it expires in 2020 and then it’s up to them to get an extension and they may want to build or expand. I have two different stadium expansion plans but it will be up to the Rays and the city to decide on that.

What does this mean for a continued effort at a possible MLS berth? I never gave up on the expansion. But the United Soccer League [where the Rowdies play ] is the largest soccer league on the planet and they are on solid ground and there’s nothing wrong with being in that league. It has great competition and the amount of teams, they are killing it. It has great players and competition so I commend them on that. I have not gone back to MLS to say, gee what do you think? We finally got in a league that we like and the fans seem to like and we’re playing a good game of soccer on the field.

How is the city reacting? I think the mayor is happy and council will like it. I didn’t have to give up the stadium to give up the Rowdies. I can lease and sublease. Big Three Entertainment has the contract to run Al Lang Stadium with the city and they do short terms contracts on the waterfront, four to five years, and they keep getting renewed. It’s the same with the Mahaffey Theater next door, and we’re in our seventh year there. Big Three is the operator. Big Three allows the Rowdies to play in the stadium and as part of the deal, Big Three will transfer rights of the use the stadium from the Rowdies to play in as part of the transaction. The Rays are good stewards. I’m a good steward. We felt that’s the clean way to do it.

What was your exit strategy for the Rowdies? It was hopefully soon. During all this, I went through open heart surgery. This is my six days a week job. It’s the only job I have after work six days, and my goal was always to fix it. I buy things and I fix things. I sell, build and clean them up and make them profitable. It’s what I do for a living. Five years was going to be my max. It took two years for people to believe I was going to stay and that I wasn’t going to go broke. Thankfully we didn’t. Thank god our sponsors and fans grew and everyone supported this team.

Are the Rowdies profitable? This year was our first year to go break even. We have been feeding this thing for a while. You have to have resolve if you take on something like this and you have to take the licks along the way. We have a phenomenal team of people we grew and that’s the reason why we are successful.

What about those people? Will they all still have jobs? There may be economies of scale between what I do and what they do. We’ll take good care of employees that don’t make it. That means providing a good compensation package if they don’t make it. The team employs roughly 100, and on game days about 250 to 300.

Can you share any financial details about the transaction? No. I think that we both agreed to a very fair transaction. I value it much higher than a lot of people and I think we came out with a good transaction. I think [we both] got a good deal.

Does the deal have any impact on another run at the MLS? I’m not sure they are going in that direction. We’re talking to the USL and I’m happy with those conversations. I don’t know if it matters if you are MLS or USL. I don’t think it will make a difference in the soccer world if you have a great team. We developed the Tampa Bay United Academy which now has 3,200 children playing soccer from U-9 to U-17. We’ve been building youth leagues and that will be huge. I’m sure the new management will keep building the youth leagues and I’m sure their philosophy and ours are identical.

What’s next for you? This has taken about 85 to 90 percent of my time, which is 75 percent too much. I have projects on the drawing board I need to get to get to. I have land to develop. I have a shopping center I need to work on and want to expand possibly. There is a lot the city needs to get accomplish.

Bill Edwards: Rowdies will stay in St. Petersburg ‘for at least five years’ under deal with Rays

ST. PETERSBURG — Tampa Bay's baseball team will soon be the proud owner of Tampa Bay's soccer team. In a Tuesday morning press conference at the Mahaffey Theater, Bill Edwards announced the sale of the Rowdies to the Rays after five years of ownership.

"I'm announcing that I am selling the Tampa Bay Rowdies to the Tampa Bay Rays,'' Edwards said. "Why? I wanted to keep it local. I wanted to keep it in town. I've heard a lot of stories about this, but this is a great situation for the city of St. Petersburg. I've done the things I'm supposed to do. Mission accomplished, and I'm out.''

The deal won't become official until Oct. 11, at the earliest. That is the next time the St. Petersburg City Council could approve the deal, a necessary step since the sale includes reauthorization of the Rowdies' lease to play at Al Lang Stadium.

While terms of the deal were not disclosed, Edwards said that the current agreement stipulates that only the Rowdies can play at Al Lang for the duration of the current contract, which runs through Nov. 30, 2020. He also said his agreement with the Rays has a clause that the Rowdies play at Al Lang for at least the next five years.

"I've heard a lot of conspiracies,'' Edwards said. "There's nothing going on. Our agreement is to keep the Rowdies in town for at least five years.''

Rays team president Matt Silverman said the five-year commitment was not an issue and reiterated the Rowdies deal is "unrelated" to plans to build a new baseball stadium in Ybor City they hope to open in 2023.

"It was not a contentious point at all,'' he told the Tampa Bay Times after the event. "In fact, we were in complete agreement that for the foreseeable future the Rowdies should be playing at Al Lang, and we hope that their run at Al Lang continues beyond that.''

With the lease expiring in two years, the Rays will have to work out a new deal with the city to fulfill the five-year promise.

Silverman and St. Petersburg mayor Rick Kriseman said there was no talk of playing baseball there again or re-opening the previously failed idea of building a baseball stadium on that site, which could require public approval.

"Al Lang is a soccer venue now, and it's a great one, and Bill has invested a lot of money into making it a soccer venue,'' Silverman said. "We think it should continue that way for the foreseeable future.''

Edwards, 73, will no longer own the Rowdies, but his company, Big 3 Entertainment, will continue to produce concerts at Al Lang. He will also remain manager of the Mahaffey Theater and will continue to own and operate the downtown Sundial shopping district.

The teams will maintain separate front offices, but the deal will provide the opportunity to combine some operations, some mundanely administrative, such as payroll and HR; some exploratory, such as athletic training, recovery and injury prevention; and some from the business side, such as selling sponsorship packages for both teams and possibly ticket deals. And with input on the schedule for both teams, they could not only limit conflicts but create an event such as a doubleheader day.

"I do think there will be many different opportunities for the organizations to learn from each other,'' Silverman said. "Hopefully, we'll be able to expand both fan bases by bringing them together.''

For now, Rays and Rowdies fans will continue to share St. Petersburg. Kriseman, decked out in a Rays cap and a Rowdies scarf, said he was encouraged by the merger.

"To me, the message it sends is that the Rays recognize what's happening in downtown St. Pete and have made an investment in a franchise that was already drawing well and continues to draw well (average attendance, 5,754) and is bringing a lot of energy and excitement to the community,'' he said.

Currently, the Rowdies play in the United Soccer League. They are 11-13-7 and four points out of playoff contention with three matches left in the season. They play at Atlanta tonight and must win out to even have a chance at the playoffs.

Edwards previously explored the possibility of moving the Rowdies to Major League Soccer, the highest-level professional soccer league in the United States. MLS did not select Tampa/St. Petersburg in its latest round of expansion.

"There is a rich history of professional soccer and the Rowdies in Tampa–St. Petersburg," MLS spokesperson Dan Courtemanche said in a statement, "and we congratulate both Bill Edwards and the Tampa Bay Rays on building on that history through this sale."

Silverman said a jump to MLS is not a top priority.

"It's not something that we categorically rule out, but it's not a part of our plans,'' he said. "We're very happy with the Rowdies' standing in the United Soccer League. We think it's a great fit for the team and the venue we play in. We made this decision that we are going to be in the USL for a long time.''

The Rays are buying the Rowdies. What does it mean for Tampa Bay? [Updated Info]

(Follow link for full article.)

https://www.tampabay.com/sports/rowdies/2018/10/01/tampa-bay-rays-to-purchase-rowdies-soccer-club/

The Rays are buying the Rowdies. What does it mean for Tampa Bay?

ST. PETERSBURG — The Rays struck a surprising and curious deal to buy the Rowdies they say was made only to get into the soccer business and has no connection to the effort to find new home for their baseball team.

The deal includes at least short-term control of downtown waterfront Al Lang Stadium. The Rays tried a decade ago to get a new baseball stadium built there and never fully let go of the idea — which is why there was immediate speculation there was more to the Rays-Rowdies deal than just control of a soccer team.

JOHN ROMANO: Rays? Rowdies? Let the conspiracy theories begin!

Most pointedly, were the Rays seeking an alternative St. Petersburg stadium site to their proposed new home in Ybor City, where talks have been ongoing to bridge the funding gap in completing that $892 million deal to build a Tampa ballpark?

Another possibility: Were the Rays considering moving their spring training base back to St. Petersburg from Port Charlotte, or perhaps moving in a minor-league team?

Rays president Brian Auld told St. Petersburg officials it was none of the above. This was just an opportunity to buy the soccer team from businessman Bill Edwards and grow their overall business.

"It's got nothing to do with what's going on in Ybor City, it's got nothing to do with spring training," City Council member Charlie Gerdes said Auld told him. "It's purely a business decision that makes a lot of sense when you look at the relationship the teams have …

"They love downtown St. Pete and are a sports business and they think it's a very smart business decision. He did say (it) … has nothing to do with short-term or immediate plans

An artist’s rendering of the Tampa Bay Rays proposed new ballpark in Ybor City. [Courtesy of Tampa Bay Rays]

One of the leaders of the group trying to make the Ybor City stadium a reality said he wasn't worried that about the Rays' intentions.

"I can understand why it could be perceived that way," said Ron Christaldi of Tampa Bay Rays 2020. "But Ybor City is the best by far. The site is much better than where the soccer team plays. That's not a knock on St. Pete. It's just a much better location."

Christaldi said the Rowdies purchase was actually a good sign the Rays want to make the Ybor deal work. He said team officials reiterated to him Monday that a Ybor stadium was their "highest and only focus" after word of the soccer deal got out.

"My initial reaction was that it underscores and reinforces (principal owner) Stu Sternberg and the Rays' commitment to the community,'' Christaldi said. "If they were leaving, they likely wouldn't buy another professional sports team in the market. It's kind of doubling-down on their commitment."

But another St. Petersburg City Council member, Darden Rice, said she came to a different conclusion after speaking to Edwards.

"I would think Hillsborough voters might find it odd that the Rays have the money to buy a soccer team, but not come to the table with money for a stadium," Rice said. "To me, that says the deal in Hillsborough must be dead."

Neither Rays nor Rowdies officials said much about the deal on Monday and scheduled a news conference for 10 a.m. Thursday. The price tag of the deal was not disclosed. Edwards has been looking to sell for a while, and told Rice he has had several offers for the soccer team.

The deal won't become official until Oct. 11 at the earliest. That is the earliest the City Council could approve the deal, a necessary step since the sale includes reauthorization of the Rowdies' lease to play at Al Lang. The longtime home to spring baseball was reconfigured a few years ago to better accommodate soccer, and the lease runs through Nov. 30, 2020.

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman, who was briefed last week on the agreement, said in statement that it was good deal for all sides:

"Mr. Edwards deserves much appreciation for remaking the Tampa Bay Rowdies and investing in Al Lang Stadium and our community. Similarly, the Tampa Bay Rays' leadership has remade their baseball organization and placed considerable emphasis on community engagement. I am confident that this is a positive development for all parties, the great fans of both teams, and the City of St. Petersburg."

Gerdes said Auld told him the Rays were interested in buying the Rowdies last year, when Edwards expressed interest in selling the team. The Rays looked into that option again and decided it made sense from a business standpoint, citing, for example, the potential to package sponsorships together for both teams.

Rice said Edwards told her "the soccer team has been extraordinarily time consuming" and he wanted to move on to other ventures, though he would maintain promotional rights for concerts held at Al Lang.

The Rowdies currently play in the United Soccer League. The Rays plan to continue playing at that level initially, but could eventually explore securing a franchise with the more prominent Major League Soccer group.

Edwards attempted such a move last year, but the league passed over St. Petersburg when it awarded expansion teams (were the Rays to land an MLS franchise, that would raise the question of whether the soccer team could also be bound for the new Ybor stadium.)

Last year St. Petersburg voters approved a referendum that would have allowed Edwards to expand and upgrade Al Lang for MLS play and negotiate a 25-year lease for the stadium. City Council member Amy Foster said the stadium could be altered to accommodate baseball, but any substantial change to the footprint would require new approval from voters.

The Rays are planning to play at least four more seasons at Tropicana Field, assuming all goes right for the new Ybor stadium and it is ready by 2023. The team has a Dec. 31 deadline to let St. Petersburg officials know if they will use a pre-negotiated deal for an early departure from the Trop, where they are signed through 2027.

The Rays have not formally ruled out building a new stadium in St. Petersburg — the city has offered the Trop site and its lucrative redevelopment fees — if the Ybor deal falls through. But the team has indicated that Major League Baseball officials prefer Tampa because it's much closer to the population center of the bay area region.

The Rays will also get the Rowdies’ stadium contract for Al Lang Stadium, and the story has stoked interest in Major League Soccer potentially coming to Tampa and the Rays building a new stadium.

The Rowdies began as an NASL club in 1975, playing in several leagues before folding in 1993. The club was reborn in 2008, and purchased by Edwards in 2013. This past season was its second in the USL. From RowdiesSoccer.com:

“We are committed to continuing the upward trajectory that the Rowdies have been experiencing under Bill’s visionary leadership,” said Tampa Bay Rays President Matt Silverman. “The Tampa Bay Rowdies are a legendary soccer team, and we look forward to extending their legacy and prominence. We are eager to get to know Ralph’s Mob and all the Rowdies fans, to growing soccer in St. Petersburg and throughout Tampa Bay, and of course, bringing home a championship, which could be imminent!”

https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2018/10/01/reports-potential-ownership-change-mls-hopefuls-tampa-bay-rowdies

Reports: Potential ownership change for MLS hopefuls Tampa Bay Rowdies

USL side and MLS expansion hopefuls the Tampa Bay Rowdies are being purchased by Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays, according to multiple media reports and a statement from the mayor of St. Petersburg, Florida, where the team plays.

The Rowdies have not commented on the reports, but have scheduled a press conference for Tuesday morning.

The news appears to add multiple layers of intrigue to the Rowdies’ prospects of future MLS entry, a campaign the club have dubbed #MLS2StPete.

Last year St. Petersburg voters approved a referendum solidifying the Rowdies’ Al Lang Stadium (pictured above) as the future home of a potential MLS expansion team, with current Rowdies owner Bill Edwards having proposed to fund the expansion fee and an $80 million renovation of the historic waterfront stadium into a striking 18,000-capacity soccer venue, a development welcomed by MLS executives.

Edwards “deserves much appreciation for remaking the Tampa Bay Rowdies and investing in Al Lang Stadium and our community,” said St. Pete mayor Rick Kriseman in a public statement.

“Similarly, the Tampa Bay Rays' leadership has remade their baseball organization and placed considerable emphasis on community engagement. I am confident that this is a positive development for all parties, the great fans of both teams, and the City of St. Petersburg."

The Rays are also based in St. Petersburg, which sits across Tampa Bay from the city of Tampa proper, and are seeking a new ballpark to replace Tropicana Field, the domed stadium near Al Lang that they’ve called home their entire existence.

The team has proposed a new domed venue in Tampa’s Ybor City neighborhood, but with a price tag approaching $1 billion, it’s unclear who and how the new park would be funded. A decade ago the Rays sought unsuccessfully to advance a proposal for a new baseball stadium on the site of Al Lang, which was originally a baseball facility used primarily as an MLB spring training site in the latter half of the 20th century.

A Rays official told the Tampa Bay Times on Monday the purchase would have no effect on their Ybor City plans.

MLB’s Tampa Bay Rays Purchase the Tampa Bay Rowdies

FORMER ROWDIES OWNER BILL EDWARDS TO BE HONORED AT OCT. 6 ROWDIES HOME GAME

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Rowdies of the USL Championship today announced the Tampa Bay Rays Major League Baseball team has purchased the storied professional soccer club from former owner Bill Edwards. Per league practice, financial terms of the sale were not disclosed.

“As the USL Championship continues to expand and firmly root itself in the American professional soccer landscape, it continues to draw growing interest from experienced and sophisticated investors like the Tampa Bay Rays organization,” said United Soccer League CEO Alec Papadakis. “I am excited to welcome the Rays into the league’s ownership group, the third Major League Baseball ownership group to join the USL. I am also incredibly grateful for the long-term contributions of former Rowdies owner Bill Edwards. Bill was a model owner and played a major role not only in the successful resurgence of his club but in the overall growth of the league.”

As part of the deal, current Rays Presidents Matthew Silverman and Brian Auld will become Vice Chairmen of the Tampa Bay Rowdies, overseeing all aspects of the club going forward in concert with Rowdies VP & COO Lee Cohen.

“I am thrilled to join a successful and forward-looking organization as the USL and believe there is a very bright future ahead for the beloved Rowdies,” said Silverman. “This community is a hotbed for soccer- from the strong youth participation to the thousands who pack Al Lang Stadium each week clad in green, yellow and white. I look forward to working with our supporters and community partners to build upon the success of the club and grow the Rowdies brand into one of the most vibrant in all of professional soccer.”

Edwards accomplished much during his tenure as owner of the Rowdies, returning the iconic club to its former prestige within the Tampa Bay community. Edwards purchased the club in 2013 and invested millions of dollars into Al Lang Stadium, converting it into one of the most unique and picturesque venues in the sport. Edwards will be recognized during a special tribute at the Rowdies’ final home game on Oct. 6 at Al Lang Stadium.

2 Tampa Bay natives on roster for USMNT game at Raymond James

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) - Two Tampa Bay natives are coming home next week and suiting up for the United States Men's National Soccer Team.

The United States takes on Colombia next Thursday at Raymond James Stadium. The game is part of the team's Kickoff Series and is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.

U.S. Soccer released the roster for the game on Monday. Twenty-four players made the cut, including two from the Tampa Bay area: Julian Green and Ben Sweat.

Green is a 23-year-old midfielder with 12 USMNT caps under his belt. The Tampa native appeared in the 2014 FIFA World Cup for the USMNT and scored the United States' only goal in their losing Round of 16 match against Belgium.

Green currently plays for Greuther Fürth in Germany's second division of professional football, 2. Bundesliga. He previously played for Bayern Munich.

This roster marks the first time Sweat has been called up to the men's national team. The 27-year-old Palm Harbor native is a product of Chargers SC, a U.S. Soccer Development Academy club.

Sweat is a left back who played four years at the University of South Florida. After college, Sweat was taken by Columbus Crew in the 2014 Major League Soccer SuperDraft. He went on to play for the Crew's USL affiliate club and even spent two seasons with the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Sweat currently plays for the Major League Soccer team New York City FC.

USL Race for the Playoffs – Sept. Oct. 3-7

WESTERN CONFERENCE TAKES SPOTLIGHT FOR KEY MIDWEEK CONTESTS IN BATTLE FOR POSITION

The race for the playoffs in the Eastern Conference continues to remain a close-run thing with five teams separated by three points from sixth place through 10th place in the standings, and that group could be joined by the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Wednesday night to add to the tension. The big spotlight in Wednesday’s action, however, falls on the Western Conference where two teams have the chance to clinch their spot as others fight for a chance at homefield advantage in the conference quarterfinals.

THREE KEY GAMES
Wednesday, Oct. 3 – ATL UTD 2 vs. Tampa Bay Rowdies
After last week’s loss to Indy Eleven it’s make-or-break time for the Rowdies in their two games this week, but both on paper look winnable starting with a trip to Coolray Field to face ATL UTD 2. Atlanta has lost four in a row, a sequence that began with a 1-0 defeat to the Rowdies at Al Lang Stadium on September 15. The Rowdies are four points out of the playoff positions to start the week, but also play host to the Charlotte Independence on Saturday night which means a victory here could set up one final push for a place in the postseason.

Next Game: 10/3 at ATL UTD 2, 7 p.m. ET; 10/6 vs. Charlotte Independence, 7:30 p.m. ET
The Rowdies will have been happy to see the draw between Nashville SC and the New York Red Bulls II, but now have to make hay this week in their two games against ATL UTD 2 and the Charlotte Independence. Victories in both those games, and defeats for the Red Bulls II in North Carolina and Bethlehem Steel FC against Indy Eleven would be highly beneficial and potentially set up a winner-take-all contest for the final spot in the postseason with Steel FC on the final day of the season.

The Tampa Bay Rowdies (11-13-7, 40pts) open a two-game week by visiting ATL UTD 2 (5-17-8, 23pts) with Tampa Bay likely needing to take victory in both contests to keep its chances at a place in the USL Cup Playoffs moving forward. The Rowdies had a three-game winning streak snapped last Wednesday night in a 2-0 loss to Indy Eleven that put the side four points out of the playoff positions with three games to play. A matching victory to the 1-0 result at Al Lang Stadium against Atlanta that began ATL UTD 2’s current four-game losing streak on Sept. 15 would be an ideal result for the visitors to take back to the Sunshine State.

Tampa Bay Rowdies vs. Charlotte Independence
Al Lang Stadium, St. Petersburg, Florida | 7:30 p.m. ET
The Tampa Bay Rowdies and Charlotte Independence return to action for the second time in Week 30 both hoping their playoff hopes remain alive after their midweek outings, with Tampa Bay looking to send off Owner Bill Edwards with a victory in its final home game of the season following the club’s purchase by the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday. The Rowdies and Independence played to a 2-2 draw when they met on June 27 but given the situation for both in the playoff race nothing less than three points will do in the penultimate game of the regular season for both.

Tampa Bay Rays acquire soccer club

The deal ends Bill Edwards’ five-year run as owner of the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

ST. PETERSBURG — The Tampa Bay Rays have agreed to buy the Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer club from St. Petersburg businessman Bill Edwards, effective Oct. 11, for an undisclosed sum.

The deal will also cede control of Al Lang Stadium, the Rowdies’ downtown St. Pete waterfront home, to the Rays — who a decade ago made an unsuccessful push to build a new baseball stadium on the site. A key condition of the sale, however, requires the Rays to keep the Rowdies at Al Lang for at least the next five years.

The Rays play their home games at Tropicana Field in St. Pete but intend to build a new stadium in Tampa’s Ybor City historic district, despite questions about how the $892 million project will be funded.

Edwards, according to a statement issued by St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman, “deserves much appreciation for remaking the Tampa Bay Rowdies and investing in Al Lang Stadium and our community. Similarly, the Tampa Bay Rays' leadership has remade their baseball organization and placed considerable emphasis on community engagement. I am confident that this is a positive development for all parties, the great fans of both teams, and the City of St. Petersburg.”

During his five-year tenure as owner, Edwards, 73, made significant improvements to the stadium, adding more than 1,000 seats, among other changes. He also moved the team from the struggling North American Soccer League (NASL) to the fast-growing United Soccer League (USL), while simultaneously submitting a bid for the Rowdies to join the upper-echelon Major League Soccer (MLS).

Edwards also founded Al Lang Live, a summer concert series featuring the likes of Poison, Counting Crows, Soul Asylum and 3 Doors Down, in an effort to bolster economic activity in downtown St. Pete during the slow summer months. At a press conference announcing the deal, Edwards said that his Big 3 Entertainment company would continue the Al Lang Live series and continue to manage the Mahaffey Theater, which is adjacent to Al Lang Stadium.

"We've come a long way," Edwards says. "I'm very proud, but I've done what I came to do. Mission accomplished, and I'm out."

In a statement, Edwards adds, "The sale is bittersweet. When I purchased the Rowdies, they were on the brink of bankruptcy; today they are champions fighting for their rightful spot in the USL playoffs. I saw the potential of the team, and what it could mean for downtown St. Petersburg. I invested my blood, sweat, tears and money, and built an amazing staff that I could not be more proud of. The Rowdies have made great strides, truly becoming a key fixture in the community. I am grateful to the staff and players who have worked so hard, as well as the many sponsors who have stuck with us over the past five years; and I am especially grateful to the fans! We have the best soccer fans in the world, and I don't want them to worry. The team is in great hands. I wouldn't have it any other way."

Edwards, at the press conference, said that the majority of the 250 people who work at Al Lang Stadium will continue to be employed after the deal with the Rays goes through.

The Tampa Bay Rays are buying the Tampa Bay Rowdies, control of Al Lang Stadium

The Rowdies play on the same waterfront site the Rays tried to build a new stadium on in 2008.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Tampa Bay Rays are purchasing the Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer club, as well as the team's control of Al Lang Stadium on the St. Petersburg waterfront.

St. Pete City Councilman Charlie Gerdes confirmed meeting with Rays president Brian Auld Monday afternoon.

He said Auld told council members the plan to purchase the Rowdies was a business decision independent of the Rays search for a new stadium site.

The Rays indicated they share many of the same sponsors with the Rowdies and the decision to purchase just made sense.

TIMELINE: 10 years of the Rays' Stadium Saga

This news is both sudden and unexpected and will stir endless rumors about the future of both teams.

The Tampa Bay Rays announced in February their preference for a stadium in Tampa's Ybor City over St. Petersburg. But funding appears tough to come by in cash-strapped Hillsborough County.

The Rays unveiled their plans for an $892 million stadium in Ybor City in July but refused to close the door on a new St. Petersburg stadium. The Rowdies currently play on the site of the Rays' failed 2008 stadium bid on the waterfront.

JULY: Don't yet count out St. Pete for possible new MLB stadium

10Investigates has reported how St. Petersburg and Pinellas County can likely offer the Rays significantly more construction money than Hillsborough County.

Calls to the Rays and Rowdies have not yet been returned, but the Rowdies had alerted media last week to a Tuesday morning press conference on an undisclosed topic.

"Mr. Edwards deserves much appreciation for remaking the Tampa Bay Rowdies and investing in Al Lang Stadium and our community," St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman said Monday. "Similarly, the Tampa Bay Rays' leadership has remade their baseball organization and placed considerable emphasis on community engagement. I am confident that this is a positive development for all parties, the great fans of both teams, and the City of St. Petersburg."

HILLSBOROUGH COMMISSION CANDIDATES: Where they stand on a new Rays stadium

Neither Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn nor Hillsborough Commissioner Ken Hagan was available Monday morning either.

Tampa Bay Rays expected to buy the Rowdies, Al Lang Stadium

ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - Multiple sources who have spoken with Rays president Brian Auld confirm to Fox 13 that the team will announce on Tuesday that they are buying the Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer team, along with their home field of Al Lang Stadium.

Speculation runs the gamut: Could they use it for a new stadium for themselves? For spring training? To leverage Hillsborough taxpayers into paying more for an Ybor site? Could they even sell the property to help fund a new stadium?

But St. Petersburg city councilors who were briefed by the Rays are taking the purchase at face value

"The ownership had a great interest in soccer," said councilor Gina Driscoll, whose district encompasses the stadium land. "A lot of owners out there own different sports teams, that it is a great way for them to diversify."

This is all coming as the team is now three months away from its deadline to finish its search in Hillsborough. The team needs to piece together $900 million for the Ybor site. Ron Christaldi is leading the effort to raise corporate commitments to show both the team and public officials investments in the Ybor site wouldn't go to waste.

"We have literally raised millions of dollars of new corporate funding for the Rays over time. We are very excited and remain very bullish on everything," he said. (We have) solid commitments."

Christaldi said the purchase of Al Lang and the Rowdies should comfort Rays fans, in that it represents a doubling down by the team, on the entire community.

"It lessens the likelihood that some out of state city is going to approach them and wow them off their feet and take them away," said Christaldi. "I am not aware of any of those discussions, but this seems to further eliminate those prospects."

Christaldi also said Auld told him the Rays are committed to keeping the Rowdies at Al Lang. The top member of the County Commission dealing with the Ybor plan, Ken Hagan, did not immediately respond to our request for comment on Tuesday's news conference.
