High-flying golf course development hits county turbulence

A full year after a high-power group sought the City of Miami’s only golf course beside Miami International Airport for a vast office, retail and hotel complex including a soccer stadium, the group finally got around to talking with the airport.

That was eight months after voters had OK’d talks about a lease of the city’s largest green space for a project due to be larger than landmark Brickell City Centre, on about eight times the land.

From day one even casual observers had asked how the planned mega-project’s constant traffic flows plus soccer crowds would slow drives to the airport. They’d asked about multiple office towers and at least one hotel right in flight paths. But apparently it never crossed the developers’ minds to call airport officials.

They finally did chat informally this month, but only after county Commissioner Rebeca Sosa filed a formal request to study every impact of the project on the airport, the county’s major economic engine. That, she told a commission committee last week, finally got developers to talk to Aviation Director Lester Sola.

It’s a year late, and the “very preliminary” talk, Mr. Sola said, was merely about where developers were looking to build beside the airport. “Prior to that we had no discussions either formal or informal on where this development if it were to take place would eventually be situated within the footprint of the golf course.”

That may be par for the course for the Mas brothers group and ex-soccer star David Beckham, who plans a team on the site if talks with Miami lead to a “yes” vote. They seemed to assume they have a right to the city’s only golf course in a no-bid deal at far below value.

Maybe they also assumed that the county, which gets no say in the golf course deal next door, would also be silent on the impact at our international airport.

Then came Ms. Sosa’s request, noting there’d been no study of the potential impact and saying “the county should oppose any development at Melreese which is harmful to MIA.”

That made clear that the county won’t sit silent. The committee strengthened the request to bar street closures to aid the Mas project, study impact on commercial development at the airport in its own $5 billion upgrade, and immediately get federal airport regulators involved. It passed 4-0.

Mr. Sola said that if the full commission votes yes – as it certainly should – he’ll try to finish the study in two months. A city vote, unfortunately, would come first, so the city wouldn’t know the total impact on our aviation gateway when it voted.

Ms. Sosa said the county should focus on impact not only on traffic and aviation, but also on commercial (the airport plans two office towers and a convention center right next door) and environmental impact, and “also the cost to MIA to mitigate any such impacts, because we shouldn’t pay for any impact.”

That might lead to big impact fees for Melreese development. So while the county can’t control the lease, it could be a thorn. Skies are hardly clear of county action.

As Ms. Sosa told the committee, “the airport is far too important for Miami-Dade County. We need to know if what is planned over there is going to affect not only traffic but the operations of the airport. We cannot allow something to disrupt the operations of the airport so people can decide to use other airports and to leave.”

Other impediments were noted. Mr. Sola said the planned buildings’ height and locations – now held under tight wraps – could run afoul of both county planning and zoning regulations and federal rules. The Federal Aviation Administration limits building heights in flight paths, depending how far they sit from runways. Federal rules allow no variances, he said, so when the Mas team unveils where to build what, it must clear Federal Aviation Administration rules too.

Even buildings the federal agency allows could impede the airport, Mr. Sola noted. Towers short enough to be legal could prevent MIA from using runways for major cargo and passenger flights even if smaller planes could still use them. That wouldn’t sit well in an airport handling over 45 million passengers a year.

All these points will be moot if just two city commissioners bar the Mas group from Miami’s golf course, and we’d hope that at least two would protect green space and avoid a giveaway. But county commissioners aren’t sure the city will secure its assets.

As Ms. Sosa summed it up last week, “We’re not talking about a stadium only. It’s a humongous thing that they want to do over there… We’re not experts, but you don’t have to be an expert to understand how something like this can affect the quality of life and the operations of the airport.”

Pray that the city also recognizes that.

Rays and St. Pete re-up talks about team's future

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (FOX 13) - Management with the Tampa Bay Rays met with the Mayor of St. Petersburg for the first time since the team floated the idea of playing home games in two cities.

Owner Stu Sternberg spoke with Mayor Rick Kriseman for about 90 minutes at the city's old police headquarters, in use until renovations at city hall are done.

"It was good to talk, it was nice to see the mayor and his crew and we had a nice conversation," Sternberg said afterward.

Sternberg did not ask for permission to negotiate with Montreal, even though he said afterward he was still very interested in the idea.

He said it was a good meeting and that he considered that in-and-of-itself an accomplishment. The reopening of talks has also put the other side of the bay back on notice.

Hillsborough's chance to negotiate expired in December, but Hillsborough's negotiators are hoping for another crack.

"We will see how things and the discussions go," Sternberg said.

The head of the Tampa side's business development effort, Ron Christaldi of Rays 2020, told FOX 13, "I believe all involved continue to think regionally."

After the meeting, the mayor didn't appear on camera. He has the power to allow the team to negotiate with either Montreal or Hillsborough County.

Kriseman's office said, "The meeting went well, to be continued."

It is unclear as to when their next meeting will be.

Question on Tailgating the Games

Hello all! I'm hoping some of you fine fellow soccer-enthusiasts can help me on this one. I recently moved to the area and was excited to get a group of people together to tailgate the game this past Saturday. We loaded up the car with the canopy and chairs and grill but when we got the stadium the parking attendant said that all spaces were reserved for VIP and season ticket holders? We were turned away and had to park down the street and walk our gear up to the stadium and then back again before the game. I've never once been to a sporting event where there was no parking available day of, so this caught us quite off guard. I love tailgating, and am definitely interested in attending more games, so how does one get their hands on one of these coveted lot spots? Do I seriously have to purchase a season ticket package if I want the tailgate experience?

I purchased a parking pass for the front. It worked out to the same $$$ as parking garage. I would call a Rowdies sales person to ask.

Did you purchase it day of or ahead of time? If ahead of time, was it on the Rowdies website? Or did you have to call?

Ahead of time. I’ll try and find my contact info.

This is our plight unfortunately. The lot is reserved for season ticket holders only and therefor usually remains mostly empty. I have tried to purchase a parking pass without the season ticket recently through my ticket rep and was denied.

Rowdies Home Attendance Thread - Game 11 vs. St. Louis FC [7/20]

Attendance Thread

Rough one with the weather. You'd kind of hope for throwback night to be a big draw, but this one hurt the season average...

Yeah me and a group of 15 or so were tailgating the game. We tried to rough it out in the weather but by the end of it we were soaked and left. Heard it was a great match though.

Might I ask how you acquired the parking pass to tailgate in the lot? My friends and I attempted to this weekend but were turned away by the parking attendant because they were reserved for season ticket holders/VIP? She said we weren't able to purchase a pass on site. I'd like to come and tailgate more games, but I'm not sure how to make that happen.

I called sales rep and purchased like 10+ tickets and asked how I could buy a parking pass and they just put my name on a list. So maybe try calling the box office and tell them you and some friends want to tailgate.

This was my first time at Al Lang. Despite the weather, it was really really fun. My one year old was having a blast waving at other fans and watching the drummer.

With a full crowd and nicer weather it is one of the best sports experiences you can have in the area!

*the best

Leagues Cup: Lampson leads LA; Fire out

There’s no shame in Liga MX being a superior league to Major League Soccer, but it would be nice to get more showings of strength from the rapidly improving top flight for Canada and the United States.

The Leagues Cup provided that chance for four teams of MLS, who could make a statement with three quick victories over the next two months. In at least one of Tuesday’s cases, a side’s backups and reserves gave its club the chance to take it more seriously in the semifinals.

They know they can hang with them.

Heck, they’re pretty darn sure they can beat them.

The trick now is to do it in the opposition’s backyard — the home dome of BC Place.

A draw, too, would do.

Yup, any type of draw but a scoreless one would guarantee Cavalry FC a triumphant victory in the third round of the Canadian Championship over the vaunted Vancouver Whitecaps, a Major League Soccer side that should — by any standard — beat back and take down Calgary’s Canadian Premier League squad, no questions asked.

But the stars of Cavalry aren’t playing that game.

Rays, St. Pete mayor to meet for first time since team’s 2-city proposal

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) – The Tampa Bay Rays owner and St. Peterburg’s mayor are expected to discuss the team’s future in their first meeting since the team’s controversial two-city plan has been on the table.

The Rays want to split their season between Tampa Bay and Montreal, but there’s been push back locally.

Both sides are scheduled to meet Tuesday afternoon.

There’s been tension for quite some time over what will happen to Tropicana Field and whether the city will allow the team to explore the idea of being a part-time team.

“This is not a page out of a playbook to gain leverage,” said team owner Stu Sternberg during a press conference last month. “We are focused on this plan. We are focused on how the Rays can thrive here in Tampa Bay. This is about Tampa Bay keeping its hometown team and Montreal having one as well.”

Sternberg said he’s trying to get creative and believes the split-city proposal is the best way to save baseball in Tampa Bay.

Low attendance has been an issue over the years. Sternberg said a large number of fans only come to one or two games a year.

Last month the Rays offered $5 tickets to five home games, but only two games sold out.

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman said this split-city plan is no home run.

“Ultimately such a decision is up to me and I have no intention of bringing this idea to our City Council to consider,” said Kriseman during a press conference last month.

Kriseman wants the Rays to stay in Tampa Bay, but not like this.

The mayor said the city will not help fund a new stadium for a part-time team.

Some fans are worried about whether the team will actually be able to survive if this idea becomes reality.

“We’re already struggling to sink roots here cause a lot of people come from all over the places, so it’s hard to have an allegiance with the team. But how are you going to build that if it’s divided between two different cities,” said fan Ryan Hansard.

Tuesday’s meeting is scheduled for two hours at the temporary City Hall site in St. Petersburg.

Rays meet with St. Petersburg Mayor to talk about future

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) – Rays principal owner Stu Sternberg met Tuesday with St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman to talk about the future of the team.

Neither man would say anything about the meeting after it was over, but it’s widely believed they discussed Sternberg’s plan to move the Tampa Bay Rays to Montreal for part of the season.

For fans like Katie Sproul, that’s not good news. “If they left all together that would just be terrible, what would they do with Tropicana Field?” said Sproul.

Sproul attended the very first home opener for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays March 31, 1998 against the Detroit Tigers. She has a photo of her father holding her up at the game.

“I was just a few weeks old of opening day,” said Sproul. She and her father have been to many Rays games since then. “The Rays have definitely been a big part of our life and our upbringing here in St. Pete,” said Sproul.

For business owners in the area, the Rays can bring in extra revenue during the season.

“When the Rays do play here at Tropicana field. There is tons of foot traffic. We see a little increase in numbers,” said Jeff Connelly with the Grass Roots Kava House, but for him it would not be the end of the world if the team left.

“I don’t think so at all. I believe that business is business and I feel that anyone that knows St. Pete and anybody that knows the district, people that want to visit, they will just come anyway,” said Connelly.

On his way out of the meeting, Sternberg said he plans to have more discussions with the mayor, but he did not say when that might be.

The Interest By Money People In Getting An MLS Expansion Franchise Is Mind Boggling

They like expansion money apparently.

The Major League Soccer All-Star Game is a week away but there will be plenty of action leading up to the event as investors line up in an attempt to get into the league. Apparently, there are a bunch of well-heeled individuals who are ready to spend money to buy a Major League Soccer expansion franchise and park it in Las Vegas or Raleigh or Detroit or Charlotte or Indianapolis or Phoenix. All are vying for the MLS’s 30th franchise. The wooing of MLS owners is ongoing.  The MLS decided in 2017 to increase the size of the league from 24 teams to 28 franchises. Despite having problems finding cities, the league added Austin, Cincinnati and Nashville. The league then decided that it didn’t have to stop at 28 teams, why not add two more? There is a thought that Sacramento and St. Louis will get the 28th and 29th teams.  But the question for MLS Commissioner Don Garber is why the sudden interest in Las Vegas or Charlotte or Phoenix or Detroit or Indianapolis when those cities didn’t make the 2017 expansion cut? The answer seems to be money as investors in those cities are ready to spend it on joining the MLS.

Indianapolis, flush with state money for a stadium, is in the mix for that sixth franchise. The Indy 11 soccer franchise currently is a member of the second tier United Soccer League. The Indy 11 franchise ownership group, without state money for a stadium in 2017, applied to join the MLS during the league’s hunt to add four teams but was passed over. The league may not stop at 30 teams, with all of the big moneyed people around, the MLS could go to 32 teams. All of this interest in the MLS seems a bit strange in contrast to Garber saying the league has to change its business model and become a seller’s league.

St. Pete mayor to meet face to face with Rays owner Stuart Sternberg

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The mayor of St. Petersburg is set to meet face to face with the Tampa Bay Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg.

It’s been more than a month since the principal owner of the Tampa Bay Rays Stuart Sternberg announced plans to explore splitting games between Montreal and St. Petersburg.

In the days that followed last month’s announcement, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman has remained firm on his position that the Rays play all of their games in St. Petersburg or there is nothing to negotiation.

Despite holding news conferences and taking to social media, the mayor has not formally met face to face with Sternberg to discuss options.

Fans attending the Rays game Monday night hope the mayor doesn’t give in to any pressure.

“There’s no chance the Rays can be supported in two markets,” Zak Davis said. “Nobody is going to build two stadiums. I’m curious to hear what comes out of it. I don’t know that we’ll find a unilateral decision tomorrow. I think more talks are going to continue.”

The meeting is expected to take place at 3 p.m. Fans are anxious to find out if the team will ask for permission to pursue the Montreal idea.

A spokesman for Kriseman told ABC Action News the Montreal proposal is likely to be among an array of issues they will discussed.

The NBA's Elite Are Turning Towards Soccer As A New Way Of Investing Their Cash

LEBRON WAS THE FIRST PLAYER TO ESTABLISH A FINANCIAL LINK BETWEEN THE TWO SPORTS, BUT HE'S NOT THE LAST.

“Much more soccer, I haven’t played basketball since I retired," were the words of Steve Nash in a Sports Illustrated interview back in 2016. Nash, who made himself a legend of the Phoenix Suns and established himself as one of the all-time great point guards in a glittering 20-year career, was honest in divulging the way his priorities had shifted since leaving the sport.

"I love the game and still am working with the Warriors [as a consultant] and find a great deal of reward and enjoyment out of that. But I’m playing no basketball and playing soccer semi-regularly. If you add up my love of Spurs and Mallorca and the Whitecaps, I probably watch more soccer than I do basketball these days as well."

One of these clubs may sound familiar to most with even a basic knowledge of the beautiful game. But why would Nash, one of the highest-paid players in the history of the league, be troubling himself watching obscure streams of second-division Spanish football?

The answer is simple: he had just added himself to the list of NBA legends who, on the advice of their managers, had decided to put some of their hard-earned capital behind the fortunes of a team. It's a list that's grown since Nash purchased his ownership stakes in both the MLS's Vancouver Whitecaps and Spanish side Mallorca, and it now seems that taking an ownership stake in a successful soccer club is becoming an in-vogue way for highly-paid athletes to make safe investments in their future.

The highest-profile example of this comes in arguable GOAT LeBron James, who many are periodically reminded actually owns a 2% stake in Liverpool FC. He's been an on-and-off vocal supporter of the club since he took a piece of the pie back in 2011, and there's no doubt that the investment has paid massive dividends.

Liverpool was struggling both financially and performance-wise at the time LeBron took a stake. Shortly after, Fenway Sports Group took over, and since then the club's fortunes have shifted dramatically. A near-title winning season in 2013 set the stage for the appointment of Jurgen Klopp, who's led the Reds not only back to near the top of the premier league table, but their first European cup since 2005.

Liverpool's value has skyrocketed as a result, and they're now among the top financial powers in global football once more — a status they haven't enjoyed since the 1980s. According to reporting from ESPN’s Darren Rovell (per Business Insider), LeBron's stake has grown from $US6.5 million to approximately $US32 million in the space of less than a decade.

Now, it seems that other NBA stars (as well as those who manage their finances) are taking notice, particularly with the growth and growth of the MLS and NWSL as major beacons for sporting franchises in America. The US's World Cup glory on the female side of the game has made women's football a more lucrative financial prospect than ever, while the MLS continues to go from strength to strength, adding new clubs with financial backing from the likes of David Beckham (who owns part of incoming team Inter Miami), Riot Games founder Brandon Beck (managing owner of the new LA FC), boxer Oscar De La Hoya (Houston Dynamo), and Drew Carey (Seattle Sounders).

James Harden, one of the NBA's highest-paid players right now, has added his name to the same list, buying a 5% stake in the ownership group that owns both the Houston Dynamo and its female counterpart, the Houston Dash — two talismanic team sfrom the city where his own Rockets play in the NBA. The deal was set up by True Capital Management, Harden's wealth management company.

“It was time,” Harden said in a recorded message to the fans. “I’m invested, this is my city and I’m here, I’m here to stay. I know I need to bring a championship in basketball and I will, that’s coming very, very soon, but I just had to show my appreciation and let you guys know that I’m a part of the city and I’m here forever, so I’m a part of the Dynamo, we’re going to take this thing to another level.”

The deal is “another opportunity to expand my brand globally, over these last four or five years I became very passionate about soccer so it made perfect sense,” he told Fox local news on Saturday.

It makes perfect sense financially, as well. MLS teams are, for cities like Columbus and Salt Lake, the biggest sporting organisations around, making the stadiums and assets that come with a Major Soccer Franchise prime pieces of property for any investor. Houston is also in the midst of a slump right now, sitting outside the MLS playoff spots and having not won any major MLS silverware since 2007. If they can turn their fortunes around like Liverpool though, Harden's investment could prove very lucrative very quickly.

This is only set to improve as the USA gears up to host the 2026 World Cup. The MLS have even announced that the expansion fee for new teams has been raised to $200 million USD, such is the value of a new franchise.

American Craftsman Museum

June 28 at 3:21 PM ·

Have you heard the news?

The Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement opens to the public on Tuesday, December 10!

The only major museum in the nation dedicated to this important movement in the history of American decorative arts (c. 1900 – 1930), the $90 million, 5-story, 137,000-square-foot building is the culmination of a six-year collaboration between founder, collector, and benefactor Rudy Ciccarello and award-winning architect Alberto Alfonso, of Alfonso Architects.

After thousands of hours spent in concept and design and four years under construction, the museum is nearly complete and can only be described as architecturally striking. The building is accentuated with brilliant Brazilian granite panels and Arts and Crafts-era tile murals that create a bold architectural presence. Once inside, visitors will find themselves in the expansive Grand Atrium, soaring five stories high. Lit from above by Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired stained-glass skylights and framed by a 67-foot historic tile mural, the first floor is home to the Museum store, Café, Ambrosia Restaurant, and a research library. The rest of the museum has more than 40,000 square feet of permanent gallery space and 10,000 additional square feet dedicated to changing exhibitions. The permanent galleries are the repositories for the world-class collection of art objects from the Two Red Roses Foundation, started by Ciccarello in 1997. The collection of more than 2,000 objects includes rare and one-of-a-kind examples of furniture, pottery, metalwork, tiles, lighting, color wood blocks, photography, jewelry, and fine art created in the early years of the twentieth century. In addition to gallery space, there is an auditorium, a large event and banquet hall, a graphic studio, and education studio.

We can not wait to welcome guests from near and far to enjoy this new museum!

City of Charlotte gets Ally for MLS expansion bid

Bank also sponsors the International Champions Cup pre-season soccer tournament.

The city of Charlotte in North Carolina has received a boost in its hopes of securing its own Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise after securing a deal with Ally Financial, which will see the bank holding company become the new team’s sponsor if it joins the league.

As well as getting front-of-shirt branding on the proposed club’s kit, Ally plans to leverage its partnership with the city’s bid team to highlight its commitment to the community, specifically around economic mobility, employee engagement and financial literacy.

Arsenal and Fiorentina brought the International Champions Cup back to Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium over the weekend, but it was U.S. Women’s National Team World Cup hero Megan Rapinoe who stole the show.

Tournament promoter Relevent Sports Group brought in Rapinoe to build excitement for the game as well as a companion fan festival earlier in the day at Romare Bearden Park. Rapinoe came on stage at the fan festival and struck her signature, arms-open after-goal celebratory pose — a pose that became iconic as Rapinoe scored the most goals in the World Cup this summer while leading Team USA to its second straight championship.

“Stuff like this is incredible,” she said. “To be able to bring some of the best teams in the world here, to see the interest that we have in a city like this, that doesn’t have an MLS team.” Rapinoe paused, then said, “yet,” eliciting roars, before adding, “But I hear it’s in the works …”

The NFL Carolina Panthers are trying to win an expansion Major League Soccer team for Charlotte, a subject that came up again when Rapinoe met with reporters after leading a skills clinic for a group of children at the fan festival.

“I feel like this city is quickly becoming one of the premier sports cities in our country and to be able to bring something new and exciting like the MLS to Charlotte would be pretty dope,” Rapinoe said.

Relevent’s fan festival, House of Soccer, filled much of Romare Bearden Park despite hot temperatures. This was the first time the fan festival has been to Charlotte, and Rapinoe’s star power increased interest.

The 18 – Phoenix Flexes Attacking Prowess

STERLING SECOND HALF EQUALED WIN-STREAK RECORD, BUT RENO, FRESNO REMAIN HOT ON HEELS

7. Rising FC might be the hottest team in the league right now, but the team with the most points? That’s still the Tampa Bay Rowdies, who got a full club effort to first get their game against Saint Louis FC played on Saturday night and then put in a statement performance with a 4-1 victory that saw Sebastian Guenzatti score twice alongside finishes by Leo Fernandes and Caleb Richards.

8. As impressive as the performance on the field was, the MVPs of the night were probably the Rowdies ground staff, whose preparation that included tarps covering the field while a torrential storm blew through St. Petersburg on Saturday night helped allow the game to be played. Once the rain started to slow 90 minutes before the rescheduled kickoff, an ideal playing surface was revealed, quite the impressive job given the standing water in the streets surrounding the stadium.

9. “The ground staff did an unbelievable job,” said Rowdies Head Coach Neill Collins. “Honestly, these players are out in the field giving the staff something to be proud of, but they will be the first to admit we’ve got fantastic people behind the scenes, and thankfully for the first time in my period here they’re getting to reap the benefits in terms of the team on the field. It was a whole club effort today to get the game on, and then to go and put the performance on.”

10. While they were taking victory, the Rowdies also got a welcome favor from one of their former players as Brandon Allen came back to haunt another of his former clubs with his first two goals for Memphis 901 FC that earned the hosts a 2-2 draw with the New York Red Bulls II at AutoZone Park. The result saw the gap between the Rowdies and the Red Bulls II rise to five points, putting a dent in New York’s hopes of pulling level at the top of the Eastern Conference when it hosts the Rowdies at MSU Soccer Park this Friday night. The Red Bulls II are 2-0-0 all-time at home against the Rowdies, scoring nine goals across those two victories. With the hosts looking to close the gap at the top it’s going to make for a fascinating start to next weekend’s action.

BECK LIFE Inside the Beckhams Miami holiday with celeb mates, karaoke and days at the pool

DAVID and Victoria Beckham have treated their children to an incredible holiday in Miami complete with pool parties, A-list celeb pals and karaoke.

The retired footballer and the Spice Girl turned fashion designer splashed out on an epic trip to the city where David is planning on launching his own football team next year.

he family getting a taste of what Miami has to offer can only be a good thing with David's plans to open his own football club in the area progressing fast ready for the 2020 season.

Called Inter Miami, Beckham is one of six co-owners with Simon Fueller, Bolivian billionaire Marcelo Claure, Japanese banking chief Masayoshi Son and businessmen Jorge and Jose Mas making up the others.

Her father David has been dividing his time between London and Miami as he launches his Inter Miami soccer expansion team.

Now the footballer and his glamorous wife look to be setting up a permanent abode Stateside as they were seen apartment hunting in the city on Tuesday.

David has been busy working in the U.S as Inter Miami will join the MLS as an expansion team for the 2020 season, with Beckham front and centre as one of the owners, and the public face of the team .

As part of his deal to sign for LA Galaxy back in 2007, Beckham negotiated an option to own an MLS franchise for a discounted fee of $25million once his playing days finished.

The wheels were finally set in motion in 2013 when he confirmed he would set up shop in Florida, under the rather unwieldy working title of 'Miami Beckham United.' However, the name of Inter Miami was later settled upon - with the club in its current guise officially founded on January 28, 2018.

Beckham is one of six owners of Inter Miami - other investors are Simon Fuller, who formerly managed the Spice Girls (featuring Beckham's wife Victoria); Bolivian billionaire Marcelo Claure; Florida businessmen Jorge and Jose Mas; and Japanese banking chief executive Masayoshi Son.

While the family headed to Miami earlier this week for the school summer holidays, the Beckhams' eldest son Brooklyn remained in London.

The aspiring photographer, 20, has been working alongside renowned photographer Rankin at his studio in West London.

David and Victoria have been eyeing up $45 million apartment in Zaha Hadid's famous phallic shaped building, 1000 museum, in Miami.

Rowdies Home Attendance Thread - Game 11 vs. St. Louis FC [7/20]

Major League Soccer is talking about expansion again. So where does that leave Indianapolis?

MLS is looking to expand from 27 to 30 teams, and on Monday released a statement that its expansion committee met with the St. Louis ownership group and representatives from Charlotte's bid in the league's New York City offices, with plans to meet with Sacramento officials, too.

The statement concluded: "The ownership groups from Charlotte, Las Vegas, Sacramento, St. Louis and other potential expansion markets are scheduled to attend MLS All-Star week festivities later this month in Orlando."

Where Panthers' push to bring MLS to Charlotte stands

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Carolina Panthers made their pitch to Major League Soccer on Monday and soon they will do it all over again. Nothing was decided, but Panthers executives are prepping for round two as part of the MLS All-Star Game later this month.

Panthers owner David Tepper and team President Tom Glick led a small group to MLS headquarters in New York as part of a ramped-up campaign to put a team in Bank of America Stadium. MLS said in April that it would select two expansion cities by July 31. After that, one more expansion spot — the league’s 30th — will be named at an as yet undetermined time and for an undetermined amount.

Farigrounds lawsuit against Metro moves forward

A lawsuit against Metro Government over the Nashville farigrounds is moving forward.

An appellate judge ruled on Thursday that a lawsuit against Metro filed by "Save Our Fairgrounds" should move forward in the legal process

Save Our Fairgrounds is suing Metro over 10 acres of land that Metro is giving up as part of its Major League Soccer stadium package deal. According to the lawsuit, the city has a charter which states a fair has to be held at the fairgrounds every year. Save Our Fairgrounds said that MLS stadium package plan doesn't include this stipulation.

When first brought to court, a judge sided with Metro. However, Save Our Fairgrounds has renewed hope after an appeals court said that there is evidence to back up the group's claims.

Inadvertently, this will further delay construction of an MLS stadium. The lawsuit is moving forward and will be seen by a panel of judges.

MLS stadium lawsuit headed back to trial court

Nashville's Major League Soccer stadium has hit a snag under the latest development in the legal battle surrounding the project.

A Tennessee appeals court on Thursday sent the case back to a trial court to review possible violations of Nashville's Metro charter.

Judge J. Steven Stafford says the lower court failed to consider several legal provisions in deciding whether the city violated its charter while approving leases related to the soccer stadium.

Austin, Texas, lives in the minds of many Bay Area residents as an emerging metropolitan paradise. With its growing tech industry and lively arts scene, Austin seems to offer all the trappings of big city living without the hefty price tag.

But, of course, locals from the Lone Star State are not too happy with Austin's status as the next trendy place to live, especially not the city's soccer team, apparently.

STLFC plays at Tampa Bay: St. Louis FC, which has gone 0-4-4 in league play since late April, will take on the league-leading Tampa Bay Rowdies (11-1-7) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Fla. STLFC is 5-5-6 and has not won a United Soccer League Championship match since April 27. In the last week, the local squad added a pair of midfielders, acquiring Masta Kachar (four goals, three assists) from Real Monarchs Salt Lake City and Collin Fernandez from Phoenix Rising. As a member of the MLS’ Chicago Fire, Fernandez played in three games on loan with STLFC in 2016. (Joe Lyons)

Trains, Blames, and the Collins-mobile- Finally got a chance to watch the broadcast again for the Pittsburgh match and it had a little bit of everything. First, the Rowdies were playing on a turf stadium which is also known as public enemy no 1. Secondly, Highmark stadium is a small stadium, smaller than Al Lang considerably it seems enough to completely congest the game. Pittsburgh has been on the uptick dispatching Red Bulls 2, Birmingham, and Bethlehem all at home. And worst of all, Pittsburgh plays Lilleyball. When Pittsburgh is met with equal or greater talent, they cocoon into a defensive shell and play an extremely boring brand of soccer. The first half was classic Lilleyball, but luckily there was a hot mic right next to Neill Collins for the entire game, and it was wonderful.

Motion to have hot mic audio of Collins for every broadcast- For FCC purposes I doubt this is sustainable knowing Collins frustrations can lead to expletives on occasion, but Collins was no doubt the star of the broadcast for most of the match. Most of Collins ire went to berating the fourth official about the head ref, Collins then went on to berate the head ref directly, Collins yelled at his team of course, and not even the ball boys/girls were safe from Collins. In Collins defense, there was noticeably more poor calls in this game than in previous Rowdies games I've watched. The only seminal moment was the penalty which was a really weak call, but other than that most of the fouls were ticky tac nonsense or obvious no calls. I wouldn't say it was a horrendous ref because I've watched prime Guido games, but it certainly wasn't good.

Dramatic lineup shift- Collins likes certain consistency in his defensive lineup while making interesting changes in his midfield and offensive approach. I was surprised to see Leon Taylor get a start and I didn't think he did well live, but upon going back and watching the tape I thought he had a decent game. He still needs to make a goal-scoring impact to have true value and earn more minutes. Tejada struggled without being able to get any space on a condensed field which made it hard for Guenzatti to play the ball through the middle. A lot of the play went through Fernandes and I think he struggled the most dealing with the turf and dribbling his way into turnovers. Also starting two defensive midfielders in Oduro and Doherty seemed like a tactical decision to keep the game level going into the second half where Collins could then unleash his offensive weapons on a tired Pittsburgh defense. Doherty is still very raw in his game and abilities but Oduro quietly had himself a pretty good game. This draw was a gangbusters win for Collins in the coaching department as his gamble to bring in the firepower late led to a goal. The goal was a direct result of two subs connecting with each other, Poku to Mkosana.

Throwback team- Pittsburgh reads to me like a team similar to the Rowdies teams of the past few years, without the Cole and Schafer factor. What Pittsburgh can hang there hat on is having an identity and a good coach. But Pitt seems like a dominant home team and a poor road team due to their lack of offensive weapons. Pitt plays like a team that needs a majority of the offensive possession in order to score, and it's harder to do on a playing surface that you're not used to. That was the past Rowdies Achilles heel.

Luck?- No. Not Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck. We're talking Lucky Mkosana, who was an absolute steal for the Rowdies in the Antione Hoppenot trade. With Hoppenot being more of a playmaker than a scorer, the Rowdies do need a true striker option up front. Don't let Guenzatti and Tejada's goal-scoring numbers sway you immediately. Without an elite veteran scorer coming off the bench in Mkosana, the Rowdies are probably walking out of Pittsburgh with an L. Don't get me wrong, Guenzatti and Tejada have been having high-quality seasons finishing their chances. But Mkosana offers a more physical and crafty option when either of the two or both are struggling to get chances in the box.

Marquis matches on deck- The Rowdies host St Louis FC followed by a road trip to face the archnemesis Baby Bulls. I wouldn't be surprised if one of these two teams delivers the Rowdies their second loss of the season but this season has been about the Rowdies resilience and soaring above all expectation so who knows.

I did t like this line up at all. We needed some type of Attacking midfield and as soon as Steinberger and poku were on we had better movement.

I think the lineup was a deliberate response to knowing that the Rowdies struggle on turf mightily (see Indy Eleven match for further evidence) and that the Riverhounds mostly play possession ball and lock down defensively. The lineup was geared to survive for a while and then try and pounce late. I think the one sensible change for the starting lineup may've been having Poku or Steinberger in for Doherty but I think Collins is continuing to try and get his young loanee minutes so this was the best opportunity to put a defensive midfielder in to get some quality minutes. The Rowdies also have crucial matches against St Louis and Baby Bulls coming up.

Norwich City Extend Partnership with Visit Tampa Bay

(Follow link for full article.)

https://www.canaries.co.uk/News/2019/july/visit-tampa-bay-partnership-extended-with-norwich-city/

Norwich City extend partnership with Visit Tampa Bay to a third year

Norwich City is delighted to announce the renewal of its award-winning partnership with Visit Tampa Bay, the Club’s Official Destination Partner.

The announcement comes as the Canaries host the Club’s inaugural Tampa-based soccer camp – the Yellow and Green Dream – in collaboration with partner club, the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

“The relationship with Visit Tampa Bay has grown into something far more than we ever imagined it would be. The proactive and pioneering nature of their business provided Norwich City with a catalyst to set in motion plans to internationalise the Club, plans that very conceivably wouldn’t have happened anywhere near as quickly had this partnership not been so successful”, commented Sam Jeffery, Head of Commercial Operations.

“We have a number of synergies with Visit Tampa Bay as an organisation, and we believe our relationship is leading the way in how international sponsorships should work.

“Our warm weather winter training camp in Tampa, in November 2018, was a first of its kind in football, particularly at Championship level, and the links fostered from that have grown to the extent that we launch our soccer camps, in partnership with the Tampa Bay Rowdies and Visit Tampa Bay this week.

Our long-term goal is that soccer fans in Tampa Bay take Norwich City to their heart and we become the go-to option as a supporter of UK football, outside of the top 6 teams. This would never have been possible without our partnership with Visit Tampa Bay, and the ongoing support of Santiago, Patrick and all the great team there.”

Santiago C. Corrada, President and CEO of Visit Tampa Bay stated: "We are very excited to partner with Norwich City for a third consecutive year, especially now that Premier League football will once again grace Carrow Road.  Our partnership continues to grow. From last year's warm weather break which spurred the team to a great second half of the season leading to the Championship title to the growth of the Yellow and Green Dream, we are delighted to continue our association with the club."

"With more non-stop flights from Gatwick and new seasonal flights through Amsterdam on Delta/KLM, it's easier than ever for Canaries to experience Tampa Bay’s thrills, Cuban culture, year-round activities, fantastic food and waterfront sunsets.  We look forward to a great season and welcoming more fans to Unlock Tampa Bay.  On The Ball, City!” added Santiago.

FINCINNATI

FC Cincinnati's stadium redesign will be wrapped in 513 glowing fins

An array of fins will now ensconce FC Cincinnati’s soccer field, to be called the West End Stadium, after a total redesign from stadia specialists Populous that replaces the ETFE pillow facade previously proposed for the project.

A total of 513 fins—a total of 5.4 miles—will be used to wrap stadium‘s facade, angled incrementally to create an undulating wave formation on the exterior (513 also happens to be Cincinnati’s telephone code number). Each fin will be approximately two-to-three inches wide and 18 inches deep, situated in a way to provide a view into the stadium when viewed head-on and a more solid appearance when viewed down the length of the building’s façade.

Watch: Can UK students work out these MLS mascots? – Who Are Ya?

Planet Football

18th July 2019

The second episode of Who Are Ya? is here – and this time it’s a lot harder as we test UK students’ knowledge of mascots from Major League Soccer.

We eased the contestants in on episode one when we asked them to name some famous Premier League footballers from the 90s, but they were completely out of their comfort zone this time as we challenged them to name six mascots from MLS.

In all honesty, we’d have been amazed had anyone managed to do that with a few of them, but could they at least work out what the mascot was? And could they work out which team each mascot represents?

Find out by watching below or on YouTube, then like, comment, subscribe, and set yourself a reminder for the next two episodes coming on July 25 and August 1 – 90s football TV shows and the Premier League’s first-ever shirt sponsors.

MLS stadium lawsuit headed back to trial court

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Nashville's Major League Soccer stadium has hit a snag under the latest development in the legal battle surrounding the project.

"The Court of Appeals expressly did not address the merits of the case," Jon Cooper, law director for Metro Nashville, wrote in an email to The Associated Press on Friday.
