https://mlsmultiplex.com/2019/12/16/usl-championship-soccer-rapid-rise/

USL Championship soccer: The rapid rise

USL soccer’s saw a record 750 members, a new USL Championship team, and several stadium announcements. USL is rising, rapidly. Blink and you’ll miss it.

USL has expanded rapidly beyond the careful, calculated pace of MLS. Yet the faster-paced USL has made their expansion work as they mount their largest-ever winter summit in Florida where more than 750 members attended. They are not to be outdone by the debut of David Beckham’s Inter Miami in MLS this spring.

USL soccer has taken Miami FC from the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA) out of the shadow of Inter Miami in MLS and brought it intol the USL. Miami FC acquired Ottawa Fury FC and the new version of the team will compete in the USL Championship (Division 2) beginning March 2020.

Miami FC will play in the 20,000-seat Riccardo Silva Stadium in the heart of Miami. They established their move into the higher-level of competition in USL Championship by winning the Eastern Conference of NISA. They went 4-0-2 (W-L-D) in the six-game season, which is an impressive record.

But now their new venture will feature 17 games at home alone. It is a size and stature of competition that the team is not yet used to and will have to seriously prepare for this offseason.

Yet, for all the hard work that is required, it is also a terrific opportunity. Miami FC president and general manager Paul Dalglish said the move up in competition and large venue will enable the club to build on what already is an army of supporters. Top brass from Miami FC were front and center at the USL winter summit. The league is excited to welcome them.

Other topics were covered at the summit, from ticketing, communications, social media, merchandise to full team operations. This year’s summit even included a job fair to populate the growing soccer universe of the USL.

It is because of detailed and organized planning such as this annual summit that USL has been able to manage their rapidly growing complex of teams and divisions of competition, now numbering three: Championship, League One and League Two. In addition, there is an Academy.

Besides growing in teams and competition, USL is growing in stadium capacity and attendance expectations. Miami FC will play its first USL game in a 20,000-seat venue.

OKC Energy FC has just gotten voter approval for a $37 million, 10,000-seat stadium in Oklahoma, the announcement being made during the summit, while the Colorado Springs Switchbacks announced a stadium deal of their own. Their organization has broken ground on a new 8,000-seat multi-use stadium in the city’s downtown.

Jimmy’s Taco’s quietly debuts in Ybor City

When the owner of Dysfunctional Grace, my personal favorite shop in Ybor City, recommends a taco joint, I make a point to go. Welcome Jimmy’s Tacos to the historic neighborhood!

The popular food hub has popped up at markets all over Tampa Bay, including St. Pete Beach’s booming Corey Avenue Market. So, what’s makes Jimmy’s so special?

Start with the Oaxacadilla featuring Oaxaca Cheese in a flour quesadilla served with a side of sour cream or pico de gallo.

From there, the menu is short and sweet. I’m a big a proponent of shrimp tacos, and Jimmy’s offers arguably the best in the area. Indulge in grilled Gulf shrimp tacos on blue corn tortillas topped with mango salsa.

I’m a sucker for a good Cuban sandwich, and while I haven’t tried the one at Jimmy’s, the excellence of the rest of its menu gives me faith.  Jaimie’s Cuban is made with roasted pork, layered with ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and yellow mustard.

The new taco joint is located at 1604 N 17th Street. A ribbon cutting ceremony is set for January 3 from 11:30am-10pm.

Rays not giving up on 'incredible' sister-city plan

Team President Matt Silverman thinks this proposal is the way to "prop up" the franchise.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays sure don't seem to be giving up on the idea of playing home games in two cities in the same season.

While St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriesman shot down the team's hopes last week of having a split-city operation in place by 2024, the Rays still believe the plan is the best path forward for a franchise that's always been on the cutting edge.

Rays’ Stuart Sternberg: Aim is Montreal split plan for 2028

Principal owner says staying full time in Tampa Bay remains unlikely, so the focus remains on sharing games with Montreal.

Tampa Bay Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg talks with reporters during a briefing at the Winter Meetings in San Diego, California on December 10, 2019.

SAN DIEGO — Splitting future seasons in Montreal remains the most likely — and probably only — way to keep the Rays in the Tampa Bay area, principal owner Stuart Sternberg said Tuesday, calling the...

https://ballparkdigest.com/2019/12/11/rays-will-pursue-tampa-bay-montreal-split-in-2028/

Rays Will Pursue Tampa Bay/Montreal Split in 2028

Tampa Bay Rays owner Stuart Sternberg says his team will merely delay, but not scrap a planned Tampa Bay/Montreal split schedule until 2028, after the current Tropicana Field lease ends.

The Rays received permission from Major League Baseball to pursue a split season and approached St. Petersburg city officials about changes to the Tropicana Field lease allowing for the change. Earlier this month St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman halted talks for a split season between Montreal and Tampa under the current setup, saying that the team needs to adhere to its current Tropicana Field lease.

According to Sternberg, the process for planning a split schedule — and two new ballparks in both markets — will still take place, just without the contracted schedule needed for a 2024 debut of the plan. So that means a resumption of the search for a new Tampa Bay ballpark site in the next 12-24 months, as well as proceeding with the current plan for a Montreal ballpark. Both ballparks, it would appear, would be open-air ballparks, as there would be no need to shelter Montreal fans from cold weather in April or May and Tampa Bay fans from hot weather in July and August. This would, in theory, lower the price of both facilities. From the Tampa Bay Times:

But staying full time in the Tampa Bay area, in Pinellas or Hillsborough, remains the least likely solution given their failed previous attempts.

“I’m open to any conversation,” Sternberg said. “They’d have to show me why it would work. We did work previously, we spent years on it. Some of the really solid business leaders, earnestly, and in a caring fashion, tried to make it work. But if there’s a genie in a bottle somewhere that wants to show me why it would work — I just can’t envision it. You never say never, but I can’t envision it. It’s less than highly unlikely.”

And if they were to consider it, he said a Hillsborough site would “no doubt” be the choice over St. Petersburg, but Hillsborough options “don’t see to be viable enough” either. “It doesn’t get over the bar for full season,” he said. “Is it more (attractive) than St. Pete? Yes, because St. Pete is not happening.”

Cynics will say that planning for a split season is at least partially a negotiating ploy in an attempt to get a deal for new full-season ballpark in Tampa Bay. But, the planning will move forward, and it could very well be that a mayoral change in St. Pete would also change things. Moving the Rays full-time to Montreal is not on the table yet — Sternberg thinks there are better markets interested in MLB, but has not talked with investors in cities like Portland, Las Vegas or Nashville — and it sounds like the whole situation is still in flux.

John Romano | The Rays may be allowed to talk to Tampa again before the end of the Tropicana Field lease. It’s up to Mayor Jane Castor to convince them a full-time stadium can work in Hillsborough.

She has the jersey, she may soon have St. Pete's permission, now all Mayor Jane Castor needs is a plan to woo the Rays to play in a full-time stadium in downtown Tampa.

Popular city sandwiches you should try when traveling

3. Tampa, FL or Miami, FL: Cuban sandwich

The Cuban is a savory sandwich that begs you to take another bite. There are two versions of the sandwich (hence, the debate over its origin). Typically, it’s made with roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard in between two slices of Cuban bread. The sandwich is then pressed down where the ingredients come together and melt in perfect harmony. This variation hails from Miami while Tampa’s version includes a layer of salami as well as the aforementioned fixings.

Like other sandwiches on this list, many say that the Cuban was born to feed hungry workers in the factories and mills in the late 1800s. While the debate between Miami and Tampa still lives on today, generally, it’s noted that Ybor City in Tampa was where the Cuban came into being.

So, where does one go to try this much-debated sandwich? Top restaurant picks include La Segunda Central Bakery and Columbia Restaurant, both located in Ybor City.

The 28-year-old has used that experience to help guide players, adding another veteran position in a Dallas locker room full of young, homegrown players.

Miami FC moves to USL Championship, returns to FIU Riccardo Silva Stadium. Here’s why.

(Follow link for full article.)

https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/mls/article238277143.html

SOCCER

Miami FC moves to USL Championship, returns to FIU Riccardo Silva Stadium. Here’s why.

FIU renamed it's stadium, Riccardo Silva Stadium, after the President and co-owner of Miami FC soccer team. The field will be shared by the FIU Panthers football team and the Miami FC soccer team. The field and stadium were upgraded to help with t BY CHARLES TRAINOR JR.

Miami FC officials confirmed the team is moving up to the USL Championship division for the 2020 season, and will return to FIU’s Riccardo Silva Stadium, named after its owner, where the team enjoyed success on and off the field in 2016 and 2017.

The USL Championship division is the second-tier U.S. professional league, behind Major League Soccer.

With Miami FC’s new affiliation, South Florida will have three teams starting in March 2020. Inter Miami will play in MLS, Miami FC in USL Championship, and Inter Miami will enter a team in USL League One, which is the third-tier league.

Miami FC was able to enter USL by acquiring the franchise rights of Ottawa Fury FC, which disbanded. The club has won nine trophies since its establishment in 2015. It played its first two seasons in the North American Soccer League (NASL), won the Spring Season and Fall Season Championships in 2017 and set several league records.

Miami FC advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2017 U.S. Open Cup, beating MLS teams Orlando City and Atlanta United along the way.

In 2018, after the NASL didn’t have enough teams to continue, Miami FC moved to the lower-profile National Premier Soccer League, moved its games to smaller venues and won back-to-back championships. This season, they played in the inaugural NISA Showcase and won the East Coast title.

The move to USL Championship and FIU Riccardo Silva Stadium will raise the profile of the team and offer a league that is more financially stable. Miami FC is coached by Miami native and former Miami Fusion player Nelson Vargas, who took over for Paul Dalglish, son of the legendary Scottish player Kenny Dalglish, who was promoted to team president and general manager.

“We could not be more excited to join the USL Championship in 2020, playing regular professional soccer in the heart of Miami at Riccardo Silva Stadium,” said Dalglish. “The decision to join USL gives us two key things. First, it gives us a stable platform to further expand our academy program and community work, meaning accessible, inclusive fun-filled family events that bring together Miami’s soccer community.

“Second, it means we’ll be playing 17 homes games at Riccardo Silva Stadium in Miami, providing a fantastic experience for the army of loyal fans that have stood by us. We can’t wait to get started and begin teh campaign to add to our trophy haul.”

Dalglish was the former coach and GM with Ottawa. Under his leadership, Miami FC has won 29 of its past 33 matches and is unbeaten in the last 20.

Ottawa Fury FC sells USL Championship franchise rights to Miami FC

Ottawa Fury FC, which suspended operations last month, has sold its USL Championship franchise rights to Miami FC.

The Miami club, owned by Riccardo Silva, is managed by former Ottawa coach and general manager Paul Dalglish.

“We had a USL franchise that was not permitted to play in the USL Championship league because it was based in Canada,” Fury FC president John Pugh said in a statement. “After we announced our cessation of operations, discussions took place about our USL franchise rights and things progressed very quickly from there.”

Unable to get the sanctioning needed to play in the USL Championship in 2020, the Ottawa club suspended operations in November.

CONCACAF has balked at giving the Ottawa club the green light to continue play in the U.S. league given the arrival of the Canadian Premier League.

Miami will play the 2020 USL Championship (Division 2) season at the 20,000-capacity Riccardo Silva Stadium.

The club began play in the North American Soccer League (NASL) in the 2016 season before shifting to the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) and National Independent Soccer Association (NISA).

"Slow Feet Don't Eat": The Motto that Motivates Fafá Picault

Picault is a well-traveled man. His career began at the age of 16 after he joined Serie A side Cagliari, where he spent six seasons. He then played in the NASL afterwards on the Tampa bay Rowdies and Fort Lauderdale Strikers. In 2015, he jumped around from Czech side, Sparta Prague, and FC St. Pauli in Germany’s second division. Two years later, he joined MLS and the Union.

"Slow feet don't eat," as Fafa Picault likes to say in his suave, confident tone. It's the bravado he sharpened growing up in New York City and Miami.

He's spent his time in the United States as a kid split between those East Coast cities, before departing for Italy to join Cagliari's academy, then returning to feature for the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Fort Lauderdale Strikers and, for the last three seasons, the Philadelphia Union.

https://www.bizjournals.com/tampabay/news/2019/12/12/tampa-coffee-roaster-buddy-brew-is-taking-over-the.html

Tampa coffee roaster Buddy Brew is taking over the old Klikfit space in South Tampa

Dave and Susan Ward, co-owners of Buddy Brew.

Tampa coffee roaster Buddy Brew plans to transform a vacant storefront on Bay to Bay Boulevard.

The former home of Klikfit at 3302 W. Bay to Bay Blvd. will be split between the coffee shop and Chill Brothers Ice Cream, a scoop shop that recently opened its first location in Ybor City, according to city building permits.

Buddy Brew will occupy two-thirds of the building, with Chill Brothers taking up the rest of the space, permits show. Klikfit, an exercise studio, shuttered around mid-year.

"We are super fired up," said Dave Ward, who owns Buddy Brew with his wife, Susan. "I don’t think I’ve been as excited about a location as this one. We just think that part of town is so underserved from a coffee perspective."

A Chill Bros. representative was not immediately available for comment Thursday.

EWI Construction Inc. is the general contractor on the project. Tampa's SoHo Capital, a partner in The Heights development, has owned the 3,100-square-foot building since 2016, according to Hillsborough County property records.

Building permits peg the initial buildout costs for Buddy Brew at $197,000, though Ward said that's only a fraction of the total startup investment, which he declined to disclose. Chill Bros.' costs are listed at $165,000.

It is Buddy Brew's third location in South Tampa; the coffee company also has storefronts on Kennedy Boulevard and in Hyde Park Village. It also has a coffee bar inside the Oxford Exchange, as well as locations in downtown Tampa, Sarasota and inside Tampa International Airport.
