Why MLS is more of a gamble for bookmakers than savvy bettors

If you sat down and wrote a list of commonly parroted refrains about Major League Soccer, “you’d have to be crazy to bet on MLS” may well be at the top of the heap.

MLS, after all, is a league known for its parity. Its teams exist within a fairly strict salary cap that, for the most part, maintains a consistent competitive balance within the league. Offseason roster mechanisms — high draft picks, re-entry draft spots and the like — make things easier for bottom-dwelling clubs, and more than a handful of lower-table teams have righted the ship and qualified for the playoffs the following year. There would seem to be very few safe bets in Major League Soccer.

Yet those who bet on the league regularly — and even the linemakers themselves — paint a different picture. They’ll tell you that Major League Soccer, with its myriad roster mechanisms, scheduling issues and other complexities, is ripe territory for an educated bettor, especially one who follows the...

Sounders Sports

Sounders from pre-MLS era always hoped for what is ‘biggest event in Seattle soccer history’

Jimmy Robertson of the Seattle Sounders parades a team flag before fans after the Sounders defeated the Los Angeles Aztecs in the Kingdome in 1977. The 1-0 win put the Sounders the North American Soccer League final in Portland. (Greg Gilbert / The Seattle Times)

“What are you doing with those turkeys?”

That was the question former Sounders coach Alan Hinton used to get when he went back to England. None of his compatriots could figure out why he was coaching a team in a league that lacked any international cachet.

Hinton was a former national-team player for one of the world’s great soccer powers, and now he was managing a squad in the North American Soccer League. Why?

Because he saw a day like Sunday coming.

“This was my hope. That’s why I came here in many ways,” said Hinton, who coached the Sounders from 1980-82 in the NASL and in 1994 in the United Soccer Leagues first division. “This is the biggest event in Seattle soccer history.”

Sunday’s MLS Cup between Seattle and Toronto FC is more than just an opportunity for the Sounders to capture their second championship. It is the apex of 45 years of history. Hinton may have envisioned a day such as this, but few others could have — even if they played on or grew up cheering for the team.

Former goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann is among those floored by the evolution of the Sounders. He played for the USL version of the club from 1994-96, and the MLS iteration from 2012-14 but never experienced the atmosphere expected Sunday.

Once it was clear Seattle was hosting, CenturyLink Field sold out almost instantly. Tickets on seatgeek.com are going for thousands of dollars. Hahnemann wants to be ticked about the price surge, but can’t help but label it “awesome.”

“To be honest, I’m slightly jealous,” Hahnemann said. “I didn’t think this was remotely possible.”

The NASL version of the Sounders were founded in 1974 and lasted till 1983. The USL version formed in 1994 and ran through 2008, the year before the Sounders joined MLS.

Sounders executive and Edmonds native Chris Henderson never got to wear the uniform of the team that employs him, but he rarely missed a chance to cheer as a kid.

Long before any of his 79 appearances for the U.S. national team, Henderson would root for players such as Tommy Hutchison and Steve Buttle at the Kingdome with his family. He said he always felt connected with the players as a kid and recalls being wowed by their British accents.

But for the team he grew up watching to evolve into what it is now has him teeming with pride.

“To be able to have the next version of the Sounders, keeping the name alive, the fans picked the name — to keep it the same and keep the tradition, it just brings me back to ‘we have this history in this city,'” Henderson said. “My parents were big fans of the game, I’m a fan of the game, my kids are fans. It’s generational. To be able to now have probably the biggest game in Seattle soccer history and pack the stadium in minutes, it just shows how important this club is to the city.”

Seattle has hosted soccer matches featuring the U.S. men’s and women’s national teams. Lionel Messi was here with Argentina for the Copa America Centenario in 2016. But the MLS Cup is something the Emerald City can call its own — something that’s been four-plus decades in the making.

Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer might embody the team more so than anybody who’s ever lived. The Seattle native played for the NASL Sounders the early 1980s and again for the USL Sounders in 1994. He coached the USL Sounders for six years before coming on as an assistant for the MLS team, and took over the MLS Sounders the year they won the MLS Cup in 2016. Schmetzer has even been an assistant coach for the Tacoma Stars and the Seattle SeaDogs.

So seeing MLS’s marquee event come to his hometown? It’s not going to get much better.

“I skipped school when the Sonics had their parade. I was there for the Seahawks celebrating them with them. Being a Seattle guy, I’m really proud of what the organization has accomplished,” Schmetzer said. “This history has a long tradition of being a successful franchise. And this right now is a pretty high point for all of us that put in the work back in the 70s, 80s, the lean years in the early 2000s. … This is all a culmination for the people who stayed here.”

After Sunday’s match, folks will either refer to the Sounders as two-time MLS champions or two-time MLS runners-up. But nobody will call them are turkeys.

Ottawa's Soccer Team Was Just Cancelled But Fans Want Them To Switch Leagues

No more footy for the Fury.

It's not a good day for soccer fans in the nation's capital. Ottawa Fury FC is over and the team won't be playing anymore. The news has left fans frustrated, sad and wanting more.

Ottawa Fury FC, the city's professional soccer team, is no more. The team folded on November 8 and announced they will not be playing in the upcoming 2020 season.

According to Global News, the team's president, John Pugh, is claiming that the reason behind the team's end has nothing to do with skill and everything to do with league politics.

The Fury's participation in its league was dependent on the approval from three governing soccer associations. And the team ran out of time to get those approvals.

"Despite best efforts, the club was unable to obtain required sanctioning from its governing bodies to participate in the USL in 2020," the club said in a tweet.

The Fury started off by playing in the North American Soccer League (NASL) for two years from 2014 to 2016. Then in 2017, the team moved to the USL.

But now the team isn't playing anywhere.

Fans were pretty disappointed by the news. And many tweeted at the Fury Twitter account, trying to get the team to join the Canadian Premier League.

That league is only for Canadian teams unlike the NASL and USL which Ottawa Fury competed in that are for Canadian and American teams.

Currently, there are seven teams in that league, two from Ontario, two from Alberta, one from B.C., one from Manitoba and one from Nova Scotia.

But fans will have to wait at least a year for the team to join the Canadian Premier League, and even then, it's not guaranteed.

While some are trying to show support for the team and encourage the league switch, some fans are disappointed with the way the club is handling the situation.

One person said, "you knew for a year you weren’t going to be sanctioned for the USL again. It’s insane that you’re trying to frame this as some kind of surprise."

And some fans are just sad that the team and its 2020 season have been cancelled.

One person tweeted, "it’s a damn shame what’s happened to Ottawa Fury FC. I hate to see fans lose their team, and Fury had some of the most dedicated fans in the city."

So while the team won't be competing in 2020, there has been no definitive statement on whether or not the team will ever get back together and play in either a new league or the same league.

Community input sought on future of Sheehan-Basquil Park

SNHU soccer player Mike Goncalves was goal keeper during the opening of the mini soccer pitch at Sheehan-Basquil Park in Manchester in August.

MANCHESTER -- When the city’s first soccer mini-pitch facility was unveiled at Sheehan-Basquil Park over the summer, former Parks and Recreation Director Don Pinard said the facility was “just the beginning” of additional yet-to-be-finalized improvements at the site.

New Parks and Recreation Director Mark Gomez has a message for residents of Manchester’s East Side -- the future is now.

Residents interested in helping to shape the future of Sheehan-Basquil Park, off Maple and Auburn streets, are encouraged to attend a community-input meeting planned for Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Beech Street School. Attendees will learn about potential options being considered for the area.

“This is an effort to really engage the community in developing a vision for the future of Sheehan-Basquil Park, Phase 2 of the renovation,” said Gomez. “With two other parks -- as well as Gill Stadium and JFK Arena -- all in the immediate vicinity, it's likely this vision will also shape future decisions made at nearby recreational areas.”

The mini-pitch is built on the site of the former Adam Curtis Skate Park, built by Southern New Hampshire University in partnership with Major League Soccer, MLS Works and the U.S. Soccer Foundation. In 2018, the Parks, Recreation and Cemeteries Division of the city’s Department of Public Works was offered a non-matching grant from U.S. Soccer and SNHU in the amount of $160,000 to cover construction of two 50-by-100-foot asphalt soccer areas in Manchester.

A second mini-pitch is expected to be built in the near future on the Queen City’s West Side, near the Parkside Middle and Gossler Park Elementary schools.

According to Gomez, the city currently has about $600,000 set aside for work at Sheehan-Basquil Park.

The mini-pitch "was the first step in adding new elements to the park,” said Gomez. “Nothing has been definitively ruled in or out at this point. We want to get neighborhood and stakeholder feedback first.”

Those unable to attend the neighborhood meeting are encouraged to complete an online survey that includes ideas for the park. The survey can be found in English at surveymonkey.com/r/ManchesterSBP, and in Spanish at surveymonkey.com/r/SBPManchester.

“One idea that has garnered significant support in our early discussions with community members and elected officials is installation of a splash pad,” said Gomez. “The splash pad at Rock Rimmon Park has been a big hit, so we're looking to add one on the east side somewhere. Other things we've heard are a desire to address the loss of the former skateboard park and to provide ongoing support of the baseball leagues that use the four existing fields. We also want to make sure that any changes adequately consider safety and accessibility.”

Gomez said officials hope to settle on a design in the next few months, then begin the bid process. It's likely that some new features will be installed in 2020, while others will be completed in 2021, Gomez said.

No Australian had played in the Major League Soccer’s decider, let alone hoisted the trophy of the USA’s top tier.

Not Tim Cahill, not David Carney, or the three other Aussies who took their talents stateside before Smith.

And on the back of a career-best campaign, Smith could soon become the third Australian in the Premier League.

MLS Expansion: The increasingly unbalanaced schedule problem

This week, MLS commissioner Don Garber revealed that the 30th team would be unveiled in the coming months. While expansion of the league shows the growth of the sport, a tipping point is being reached, especially when it comes to the unbalanced schedule.

There are few sports growing as fast in a specific location as football in North America. Rapidly catching up the big three — Baseball, basketball and football — it is estimated that soccer will rival the most followed sports in America and Canada.

While many soccer fans graduate to the Premier League and Bundesliga, higher-achieving European leagues that are the pinnacle of the club game, Major League Soccer still has played a major part in the explosive growth of the game. And it will continue to do.

A crucial aspect of the growth of MLS  has been the expansion into new markets. Some of the league’s largest and most successful teams have been founded in the past decade or so, including Los Angeles FC, Atlanta United and Seattle Sounders. The expansion has, predominantly, been prosperous for the league.

MLS Multiplex

Want your voice heard? Join the MLS Multiplex team!

Write for us!

And so, naturally, when a certain process is deemed to be successful, the league are not going to stop now. This season, FC Cincinnati were welcomed into the league as the 24th team. In 2020, both Nashville SC and Inter Miami will start play as the 25th and 26th teams. In 2021, Austin FC will commence play, before St. Louis and Sacramento will host teams in 2022, taking the league to 29 teams.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber has already said that there will be a 30th team, and in his State of the League address this week, he revealed that Charlotte are at the front of the queue:

“There are three markets we’re looking at, that our expansion committee is engaged with: Charlotte, Las Vegas and Phoenix. It’s fair to say Charlotte has done a lot of work to move their bid to the front of the line. It starts with David Tepper, passionate about our sport and very passionate about Charlotte. There are a lot of things happening in Charlotte that are similar to things that are happening in Atlanta. I think the Carolinas are great states for soccer, you know that from a women’s soccer perspective and a youth soccer perspective. Should we be able to move forward and end up with a team in Charlotte, I’m confident they would be successful.”

Moving the league to 26 and more teams may seem like a smart decision. And financially, it probably is. The market for these teams exists, as proven by MLS Cup selling out the entire of CenturyLink Field in 30 minutes. But can the schedule contain them?

The Seattle Sounders are MLS Cup Champs. Time to gear up.
Houston Dynamo: Tab Ramos assures the right coaching staff now in place

Seattle Sounders: Brian Schmetzer deserves credit

While in other American sports, an unbalanced schedule based on conferences and divisions is normal, in global soccer, one of the great aspects of the sport is that, in a league competition, every team must play every team an equal number of times, usually twice, one game at home and another away.

But because of the size of the league and the travel that is involved in an American league, there has not been an even, balanced scheduled in MLS since 2011. This was as a consequence of expansion to 19 teams. With the league growing from that point on, there has not been the opportunity to even out the fixtures, not without introducing promotion and relegation.

This is a problem. Put plainly, MLS is not fair. The playoffs, while tremendously exciting, are an inherently luck-induced way of determining a champion, while the Supporters’ Shield prize has only been lessened in calibre with every year that the schedule remains uneven.

Some may argue that it is okay to sacrifice fairness for drama. And if you see sports as a vehicle for entertainment, there is a valid argument to be made here. However, I believe – and the majority of the general soccer community believes — that professional sport should be a fair competition to see who is the best competitor, team or individual. And that involves structuring the competition in a balanced, fair manner.

NEXT: Seattle Sounders: 3 reasons why they won MLS Cup

MLS expansion is a good thing, in theory. But in practice, there are problems, one of the main ones being an unbalanced schedule. And without promotion and relegation, which seems like a non-starter of a solution, it is very difficult to align the two. And that is something that Garber and MLS must consider in the future.

https://ilovetheburg.com/ed-allen-owner-of-central-melt-launching-2-ghost-kitchen-concepts/

Ed Allen, owner of Central Melt, launching 2 ‘ghost kitchen’ concepts

Ed Allen is a St. Pete staple. For years, Allen helped serve some of the best damn Cuban cuisine in the region at Bodega in the EDGE District  — and doubled as a salsa instructor if you hung out at the foodie hub late enough. Just a few years ago Allen left Bodega to open his own restaurant on the 600 Block, Central Melt. It’s a small space next to State Theatre, but that doesn’t stop him from serving the masses.

His grilled cheese sandwiches are thick, melty, and goddamn flavorful. Don’t get me started on the seasoned French fries. They’re tied for the best in the ‘Burg, along with Zaytoon (still open during construction BTW). Allen isn’t content with just one concept, though, and has designs on expanding. In this instance, expansion doesn’t mean a whole new brick and mortar location.

Introducing the ghost kitchen, or virtual restaurant. The concept has grown in popularity in areas like New Jersey and New York. What is a ghost kitchen? It’s a virtual restaurant focused solely on delivery via phone or online ordering. Allen has partnered with Uber Eats to launch two new ventures: Eddie’s Empanadas and Wingin’ It.

Beef and Cheese empanadas

A new virtual food expansion

Both concepts will operate with similar hours to Central Melt. Beginning November 13, you’ll be able to order from Eddie’s Empanadas through the app. I tried the beef and cheese option during my visit and WOW is it savory. The empanada itself is extraordinarily crispy. Mine came fresh from the fryer. The meat inside was tender and juicy.

Yea, it was hot as heck outside, but in spite of the weather this treat was exactly what I needed.

All of the fillings are made from scratch by Allen, in addition to the selection sauces available. The mango habanero is straight fire.

Here’s a quick list of empanadas available for order (vegetarian/vegan options available):

BBQ Pork & Cheese
Mojo Pork
Spinach & Sweet Potato
Spinach, Sweet Potato & Cheese
Beef
Beef & Cheese

You can also order a side of crispy Tostones. If you know this blogger, then you know I will take ALL of the Tostones, all of the time, every day. The TL;DR here is that they are good.

Photo of a beef empanada

Changes happening on the 600 Block

While it exists primarily through Uber Eats, I’m sure Allen would oblige if you happen to pop in with a serious empanada craving.

What spurred this restaurant owner to experiment with the ghost kitchen concept?

Following the closure of The Local 662, Fubar, and the State Theatre, foot traffic started to die down. Allen adjusted his hours at Central Melt to fit with the market, but found he had more down time at the restaurant and wanted to find a new way to reach customers.

For Allen, ghost kitchens or virtual restaurants could be the future of the industry, especially as rents continue to rise along the Burg’s Central Avenue sprawl. All the food for Eddie’s Empanadas and Wingin’ It will be made in the Central Melt Kitchen.

The empanada and wing concepts respectively allow Allen to expand and experiment, without over complicating the menu, or interfering with his Central Melt process.

Support local, folks. You can keep up with everything happening at Central Melt by following the restaurant on Facebook and Instagram.

Central Melt, 685 Central Avenue.
