Manfred’s Winter Of Discontent

This truly might be a winter of discontent for Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred. There are some issues that need to be addressed beginning with Major League Baseball having to deal with every day life issues including sexual assault and an umpire going on twitter giving an opinion on the state of political affairs. Then there are the business problems. The World Series and the Major League Baseball playoffs no longer generate the kind of interest in 2019 that previous generations gave to baseball’s crown jewel events. Making a game that probably had its roots in the 18th century appeal to young people in the 21st century has become a daunting challenge. Baseball appeals to AARP members not youngsters. The business problems include what to do with the Oakland and Tampa Bay franchises where local ownership has not been able to pry land and money from local politicians to build new stadiums. Oakland A’s ownership does have a plan to build a baseball park on land adjacent to the Oakland waterfront but there are lawsuits that have the ability to stall the project. Tampa Bay Rays owners are seemingly stuck in a contract to play in a domed stadium in St. Petersburg until 2027 and have struck out in an effort to get an Ybor City stadium, near Tampa, built.

The business challenges include getting a new minor league development contract in place for 2021 and there is a cloud hanging over those negotiations as Major League Baseball owners apparently want to cut as many as 42 minor league teams out of organized baseball. The owners and players have two years left on the present collective bargaining agreement. Major League Baseball does have loyal fans who watch the product on regional cable TV networks. Baseball is a local not a national product and record revenues still flow into the business.

Seattle’s rich soccer history has had many defining moments, but none quite like this

The history of professional soccer in Seattle was rich long before Major League Soccer arrived in the city and announced an expansion team, today’s Seattle Sounders FC, who played their inaugural season in 2009.

Decades before, in 1974, the Sounders of the North American Soccer League became the first iteration of Seattle’s beloved team. They played for two seasons at Memorial Stadium, often in front of sold-out crowds, before joining the city’s brand new NFL franchise as occupants of the Kingdome.

There, the NASL Sounders played in the freshly finished stadium’s inaugural sporting event, an exhibition against the New York Cosmos, drawing more than 58,128 fans. The support — which was at that point a national record for a soccer crowd — the city showed for the sport was evident.

It continued when the NASL Sounders played in a pair of championship games on the road in 1977 — in front 35,548 at nearby Civic Stadium in Portland — and 1982, though they lost to the Cosmos in both matches.

Joe Cole has likened Chelsea FC star Reece James to David Beckham after his cameo performance in Tuesday night’s 4-4 draw with Ajax.

The 19-year-old came off the bench to score Chelsea FC’s equaliser at Stamford Bridge after the Blues initially trailed 4-1 in the group-stage clash.

The Chelsea FC teenager’s crossing ability caused problems for nine-man Ajax in the final 20 minutes in west London.

James has now scored two goals in eight games in all competitions this season as the teenager looks make his mark under current Chelsea FC boss Frank Lampard.

Former Chelsea FC midfielder Cole lifted the lid on a training session that the BT Sport pundit shared with James.

“When I was playing in America [with Tampa Bay Rowdies], I came around to train with the kids [at Chelsea],” Cole told BT Sport.

“We were having shooting session and the kids’ shooting was erratic, but James was on the money, whipping crosses, it was like watching Beckham.”

David Beckham ‘wouldn’t have a clue’ what brand Beckham is worth — but this expert has the answer

Soccer star David Beckham has been associated with brands from to , with lucrative deals that benefit both him and the companies he represents.

But when asked about the value of “,” he told CNBC‘s Emily Tan that he has no idea what his worth might be.

“I wouldn‘t have a clue. But what I am proud of is that we‘ve made it into a successful business, and that obviously coming from being a sportsman and then ready to jump into the business side of things, that it‘s all about having the right people around you, the right friends, family (and the) right business partners,” he said.

“And that has helped me transition from being a football player to a businessman and that‘s something that I‘m excited about and very proud of. To put a price on it, I don‘t think I could. I‘ll leave that to someone else to decide.”

Roo Radar: Brighton were battered at Old Trafford. Mat Ryan stopped it from being a rugby score

Mat Ryan suffered a 3-1 defeat with his Brighton and Hove Albion at the hands of Manchester United, but the Australian gloveman received widespread praise for another impressive performance between the sticks.

Meanwhile Brad Smith became the first Australian to win the MLS in the United States, and Harry Kewell is being heavily linked to a Scottish coaching job that would see him take charge of a Socceroo star.

All this and more in this week’s edition of Roo Radar, where we track the performances of our Aussies around the world!

Smith and Seattle win

Brad Smith has become the first Australian player to hoist the MLS (Major League Soccer) Cup after his Seattle Sounders beat Toronto FC 3-1.

Smith started and played for 61 minutes before being substituted for the more attacking winger Victor Rodriguez – who then went on to score Seattle’s second goal fifteen minutes later.

Smith will now fly to Jordan to link up with the Socceroos before they face Jordan on Friday morning at 3.00am AEDT.

https://stockdailydish.com/heres-which-cities-are-reportedly-still-in-the-running-for-an-mls-expansion-team/

Here's which cities are reportedly still in the running for an MLS expansion team

No one could accuse Indy Eleven owner Ersal Ozdemir of lacking ambition. But his bid to join the expanding Major League Soccer is a big leap. Here are the pros and cons.

The Brickyard Battalion celebrates a goal by Indy Eleven forward Justin Braun in the first half of their NASL soccer match against Puerto Rico FC Saturday, April 1, 2017, afternoon at Carroll Stadium on the campus of IUPUI.

Indianapolis is no longer in the running for one of Major League Soccer‘s next two expansion teams.

When the MLS owners meeting takes place on December 14, Wahl said, it‘ll be Sacramento, Nashville or Cincinnati that nab the two spots.

The Indy Eleven is one of 12 minor-league franchises that has been pushing for an expansion spot since January. MLS evaluated bids based on many criteria, but there are two (and maybe only one) that really matter: MLS .

The Eleven, , had stated MLS goals when the franchise was first conceived in 2013. The stadium, though, continues to be a hurdle for them.

The Eleven play in IUPUI‘s Michael Carroll Stadium and had a proposed $82 million deal for a new stadium shot down by the state legislature in 2015.

“We have a lot of energy for building a soccer stadium here,” team president Jeff Belskus told . “We’ve proven Indianapolis has the fan base to support soccer. It will support pro soccer and it will support Major League Soccer … It’s so logical for us.”
