Inter Miami: All You Need To Know About David Beckham's MLS Team

FOOTBALL NEWS

David Beckham's Inter Miami CF will make their official entry into the MLS next season. A number of stars have been linked with a move to Beckham's Inter Miami.

Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC are going to be the official newcomers in Major League Soccer (MLS) next season. However, David Beckham-backed Inter Miami have been the one grabbing headlines in recent weeks. And with good reason. Here's all you need to know about the new entrants to the MLS - Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami, commonly known as Inter Miami.

Inter Miami's MLS preparations in full swing

With a reported £750million stadium in the works, Inter Miami's preparations for the upcoming MLS season are in full swing. Miami Fusion's demise paved the way for a new Miami franchise to rise from the ashes, and David Beckham grabbed the opportunity with both hands. In the year 2012, the MLS signalled their intent to have an MLS team in Miami. FC Barcelona did take a gander at dipping their feet in the MLS. The concept of a 'Miami Barcelona', however, did not come to fruition. Interestingly, when David Beckham signed for LA Galaxy in 2007, the MLS included an option to buy an MLS expansion team in his contract, thanks to Beckham's worldwide presence. A reported fee of $25m was the sum required to buy an extension team in the MLS in Beckham's contract. With football in America gathering momentum, $25m was seen as a steal for an MLS team, which prompted David Beckham to exercise the clause in his contract in February 2014.

Freddy Adu signed his first professional contract on this day in 2004

The hype around Freddy Adu was incredible.

The American was 14 years old when he burst onto the scene, being selected by D.C. United with the first overall pick in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft.

Dubbed ‘the next Pele’, Adu was seen as the future of United States football.

He appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated was coveted by Nike, who signed him to a multi-year deal worth $1 million shortly after he joined D.C. United.

And he initially lived up to the hype, becoming the youngest scorer in MLS history when he netted against the MetroStars.

Sir Alex's assessment of Adu after trial

What fans said about Adu and Messi in 2005

Five wonderkids on Football Manager 2020

Adu was nominated for the FIFPRO Young Player of the Year award in 2005 and a trial with Manchester United followed in 2006.

But Adu’s career soon unravelled and he quickly descended into becoming a journeyman.

The attacker was traded to Real Salt Lake in December 2006 but he lasted less than a year there, joining Portuguese side Benfica the following July.

Adu was never a regular at Benfica, though. He was sent out on loan four times, having spells at AS Monaco, Belenenses, Aris and Caykur Rizespor.

Come 2011, Adu’s career was stalling. He was 22 years old and was heading back to MLS, joining the Philadelphia Union in what MLS’ website labelled a ‘blockbuster signing’.

Except it wasn’t. The Ghanian-born forward joined Brazilian side Bahia in 2013.

Bahia released Adu after just seven months and four appearances, with reports of ‘technical deficiencies’ being cited for his early departure.

Spells with Serbian outfit Jagodina and Finnish club KuPS - and their development team KuFu-98 - followed. Talk about a nomadic career.

Then, in July 2015, a 26-year-old Adu returned to the United States. He signed for Tampa Bay Rowdies of the North American Soccer League.

"Now things will become more difficult. Coaches will look at you. The crowd will ask for more. You'll get a good contract and do commercials, and the people will start to press."—Pele on Freddy Adu, 2004

On this day 16 years ago, Adu signed his first professional contract.

Adu failed to score in 12 appearances for the Rowdies and wasn’t seen again until he joined Las Vegas Lights in March 2018.

The forward scored his first goal in three years when he netted for Las Vegas when he netted in a 4-1 win against Colorado Springs Switchbacks.

But Las Vegas released Adu at the end of the 2018 season and he’s been without a club since.

That’s 14 different clubs in total.

He’s played in the United States, Portugal, France, Greece, Turkey, Brazil, Serbia and Finland.

He’s had unsuccessful trials with Blackpool in England, Stabaek in Norway, AZ Alkmaar in Holland and MLS side Portland Timbers.

Once, he flew to Poland to sign a contract, only to discover he’d been brought in without the manager’s consent.

Adu is 30 now and doesn't appear to have much to offer.

A case of too much too soon, or simply misjudged talent?

Whatever the case, Adu’s career has been a tragic tale.

Panthers owner David Tepper on MLS expansion, new NFL stadium

Panthers owner David Tepper speaks to the large crowd gathered in downtown Rock Hill for a pep rally earlier this year when the new team HQ was announced.

Bank of America Stadium

Charlotte, NC

Sports

Major League Soccer, L.L.C.

New York, NY

David Tepper wants a Major League Soccer team sooner rather than later, and he’s concerned that if Charlotte doesn’t land the next expansion team, there may not be another chance for him or the city.

That was one of several topics covered by the Carolina Panthers owner during a 50-minute session with local media on Monday at Bank of America Stadium. And it was an interview that came with strings attached: Tepper spoke with bluntness and candor at times, but a prerequisite for reporters attending was that the owner would not be directly quoted.

With that stipulation noted, here is an overview of what’s on Tepper’s mind a little more than halfway through his second NFL season — and on the cusp of adding an MLS team for what’s expected to be an entry fee of $300 million-plus:

•Tepper believes it’s unlikely Charlotte will ever have a Major League Baseball team. For that reason, he believes MLS can fill the void of top-level sports entertainment in the summer. MLS has awarded 29 teams and has said it will not go beyond 30 clubs, though industry experts have speculated the league might go as high as 32. Either way, Tepper said, the supply of expansion slots is rapidly dwindling.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber said this month Charlotte and Tepper are at the “front of the line” to land the next expansion team. The Charlotte Business Journal has reported a deal depends, in part, upon city government kicking in $100 million for improvements at BofA Stadium, a 75,000-capacity football venue that would need new locker rooms, soccer-specific field entry and other upgrades.

Tepper didn’t go into any specifics on cost of an expansion MLS team or what he’s seeking from local government. He instead pointed to what he characterized as important benefits to the city’s image and tourism appeal.

BUSINESS PULSE POLL

Do you support investing tax dollars in a refurbished stadium for the Carolina Panthers, possible MLS team?

Having a stadium in uptown creates opportunities similar, in some ways, to what has happened in Atlanta, home of a three-year-old MLS team that is now the league’s most valuable and popular franchise. Arthur Blank, owner of the NFL Falcons, established a model similar to what Tepper hopes to emulate: Buying an MLS team, putting it in an NFL stadium and reaping the benefits of a sport known for its millennial-friendly audience and surging interest among sponsors.

To illustrate the business benefits of adding major league sports, Tepper mentioned that during a meeting with MLS, he brought Honeywell CEO Darius Adamczyk. The CEO’s attendance and interest demonstrates how much businesses value the appeal pro teams can have for recruiting and retaining employees.

•BofA Stadium, opened in 1996, is becoming more expensive to maintain and, in some ways, is obsolete because of features it lacks, such as open concourses allowing fans to stand and watch games from bars and other group areas.

Tepper again said uptown Charlotte is the best place for the Panthers to play now and in the future and made a cryptic remark regarding a site large enough for a stadium owned by Charlotte Pipe and Foundry across Morehead Street. BofA Stadium can last another five years or so, but the Panthers owner has begun to speak publicly about building a retractable-roof domed stadium within a decade. He joked several times about giving the team’s current home away, citing the expenses of keeping it running after decades of use.

While he called the stadium well-preserved and well-landscaped, Tepper said it’s important to begin preparing the community and local government leaders for what he envisions as a joint investment by the Panthers and taxpayers. Asked by a reporter about his $12 billion personal fortune and his status as the NFL’s wealthiest owner, Tepper brushed it away, focusing on mutual benefits afforded by the presence of pro sports.

•Seat-license holders will be embraced in some fashion if and when a new stadium is developed, but what that means specifically has yet to be determined. Fans paid one-time fees to secure the same seat location on a permanent basis when BofA Stadium was built, but the seat license agreements are specific to that stadium.

•Sometimes losing is winning. During a discussion of changes made since Tepper bought the Panthers, he portrayed rapid, ambitious changes on the business side as don’t-waste-a-crisis response. He did not speak to the sexual and racial harassment investigation that drove predecessor Jerry Richardson out of the NFL, but he offered examples of a rebuilt administration that includes much greater diversity in executive roles. In addition, he noted that of the six business division leaders who met with him during his first executive meeting as Panthers owner, five have been replaced.

Tepper hired a new team president (Tom Glick), dumped the former team counsel, created a chief marketing role for the first time in franchise history and added employees in various departments to carry out a more ambitious approach. Because the organization’s business side was so unsettled, Tepper said he was able to make a series of drastic changes in a short amount of time.

Among other initiatives, the Panthers have created pregame and postgame fan hospitality and entertainment options, ramped up sponsorship prices, expanded revenue and relationships with corporate partners including Lowe’s Cos. Inc. and Atrium Health, built an indoor practice facility and completed a $160 million incentives agreement with South Carolina to move the team’s offices and training headquarters to Rock Hill in 2022.

•On the latter point, Tepper said the team will decide by February whether it will stay at Wofford College in Spartanburg until the $200 million Rock Hill headquarters opens. He praised the college for hosting summer training camp from the start of the franchise but also hinted at the possibility of moving camp to Charlotte until the Rock Hill complex opens. Dorms at the nearby Johnson & Wales University campus in uptown could be an option for housing players, Tepper said.

•On the subject of injured quarterback Cam Newton, whose foot injury limited him to two games in 2019, Tepper said no decision can be made on his future with the franchise until his long-term health can be assessed. Newton is due $21 million next season in the final year of his contract.

Over and over during his discussion Monday afternoon with reporters, the Panthers owner emphasized the importance of having a healthy, productive quarterback as an essential ingredient for success in the NFL. Referring to the team’s history of mediocrity — three games below .500 since entering the league in 1995 and never posting consecutive winning seasons — Tepper insisted his team will become a consistent contender on the field. The problem, he said, is that becoming a consistent winner takes time and that is especially frustrating for fans who have already lived through 25 years of mostly so-so teams.

•Attendance is a concern, but there are extenuating circumstances. Thousands of empty seats could be seen during Carolina’s 29-3 loss to Atlanta on Sunday in Charlotte, though paid attendance was reported by the team as 73,000. Even so, the Panthers began experimenting with an expanded ticket discount program this month, reflecting some of the challenges inherent in selling fans on a team that has lost its star quarterback, failed to reach the playoffs last season and lacked much in the way of marquee opponents (visitors in 2019 included Tennessee and Jacksonville).

The Panthers owner said Carolina, like others across the NFL, have had problems with expanded mobile ticketing programs, another factor the team attributes to lower attendance. Despite those circumstances, Tepper said he does not think the team needs to consider reducing capacity.

November 18 – The World Leagues Forum (WLF), set up four years ago to represent professional football leagues from across the world, has named Liga MX president Enrique Bonilla (pictured) as its new chairman, the first non-European to hold the post.

The head of Mexico’s top flight succeeds Bundesliga boss Christian Seifert after being appointed during the WLF’s annual meeting in Marrakesh on Friday. Seifert will remain as a vice-chairman together with Don Garber, commissioner of North America’s Major League Soccer.

“This is an opportunity to help develop and improve our beloved sport and to position the leagues in the football landscape,” said Bonilla.

The annual meeting reiterated the need to regulate agents and also discussed the new format of the Club World Cup, which in 2021 will be held in China. Leagues will make proposals to FIFA on the competition’s redistribution model so the competitive balance is not jeopardised.
