NYCFC stadium announcement could come this year, says Yankees president

Could some long-awaited news on a new home for New York City FC finally be drawing closer?

That was the suggestion made by New York Yankees president Randy Levine in an appearance on Bloomberg TV on Monday.

The iconic Major League Baseball team owns a minority ownership stake in NYCFC as well as Yankee Stadium, the Cityzens' current home, and Levine brought up the MLS team's hunt for a soccer-specific home when asked about the Yankees' trip to England this summer to play two games against the Boston Red Sox at London Stadium.

"We partnered with City Football Group, which owns Manchester City Football Club and many others. We own New York City Football Club together," said Levin. "It’s a great partnership, they’re fabulous people. We are building New York City Football Club, this is our fifth year. We are in active negotiations to get a new stadium here in New York. We hope to have an announcement this year. So it's been great. As we’re going over to London, they have been fabulous offering all their resources to us."

Levine's words follow a brief mention of the stadium pursuit by NYCFC's director of football operations Claudio Reyna earlier this month in remarks reported by SBIsoccer.com, where Reyna said "we feel good and we feel close" in regards to the search for a permanent home.

Fort Lauderdale commissioners listen to proposals to redevelop disused soccer stadium

Fort Lauderdale commissioners listen to proposals to redevelop disused soccer stadium

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) - The Fort Lauderdale City Commission listened to two proposals to redevelop the disused Lockhart Stadium.

Commissioners heard the two proposals at a meeting at city hall, at 100 N Andrews Ave., Monday.

FXE Futbol is proposing a $100 million makeover of the 60-year-old stadium, at 1350 NW 55th St.

Their renovation would include a renovation of the stadium, over 30 acres of community space, a Topgolf facility, youth and championship-level fields and a United Soccer League Division 2 team.

David Beckham and other members of his Inter Miami CF ownership group spoke at the abandoned structure last week to detail their plans for the stadium.

Beckham’s group wishes to build a $60 million, 18,000 seat stadium, which would see the current stadium razed, and they would bring in a Major League Soccer team that would spend two years in Fort Lauderdale for their games as well as community facilities, and then, it would turn into a training facility.

“Our commitment is also to South Florida because we also feel that, you know, we’re not coming here for just two years, and we’re gonna desert this,” Beckham said last Thursday.

John Paul Reynal, FXE Futbol’s Managing Partner, attended Monday’s commission meeting.

Reynal said, “I think that the city of Fort Lauderdale deserves a professional soccer team for the next 50 years, and the Beckham folks have been very honest about the fact they want to come here and play for two years while they get their stadium built in Miami, so what we’re saying is, you know, we’re telling the city and folks here in Fort Lauderdale that, ‘Do you want a two-year MLS experience, or do you want to have a 50-year professional soccer experience?”

“Our home base of our training facility will be there for as long as we’re there,” Inter Miami CF spokesperson Paul McDonough said. “Fifty years, 48 years, 50 years. We said the MLS team will play here for two years at least, and then we’ll see where it goes.”

Residents who attended the meeting had questions about the two proposals.

“I don’t want to see anybody make a promise and pull the rug from underneath,” one resident said.

“I really am concerned about public land for public use,” another resident said. “The most soccer fields possible for the use of our youth and adults.”

Commissioners are expected to decide which proposal to negotiate with on Tuesday.

Clearwater woman breaks parking garage gate to free Rowdies fans stuck for hours

The Tampa Bay Rowdies issued an apology to spectators and fans Monday night after hundreds of people were held up for hours trying to leave Saturday night's home opener in downtown St. Pete.

A Clearwater woman says the delay even forced her to break down a gate at the McNulty parking garage off 2nd Street to help trapped cars escape. Kathryn Socash, 63, was eventually arrested for disorderly conduct.

Some of the fans "held hostage" for hours in the McNulty parking garage took to social media to document the delay and vent their frustrations. Some posts described spending more time trying to leave the garage than spectators spent at the game.

Saturday night was Socash's first, and likely last, time attending a Rowdies game.

"I will not park in that parking garage again," she said Monday night. "And I will think twice about going back to one of those games again."

Socash and her family were among the hundreds "held hostage" trying to leave Saturday night's game. After two hours went by and their car had only moved from level five to level four, Socash decided to do something about it.

"I got out of the car," she recalled. "I said 'I am going to go down and see what's going on, this is ridiculous.'"

When Socash got to the ground floor she discovered there was only one parking attendant working, taking money and letting cars out one by one. She also noticed an unmanned exit, blocked only by a flimsy wooden gate that warned "$50 fine for breaking gate."

"Honestly, I've never done anything like this in my life," Socash said. "I decided it was worth it to break the gate."

Breaking the gate allowed for some cars to escape. It also quickly landed Socash in handcuffs, as St. Pete police and garage management made their way to the chaos.

Socash was arrested for disorderly conduct and spent the rest of the weekend in the Pinellas County jail.

Socash says the fault should lie with the parking garage, which she claims wasn't adequately prepared to handle the post-game crowds, but she's the one who had to pay the price.

"I have never had anything happen to me like what happened Saturday," she said. "The whole situation was absolutely disgusting."

McNulty garage management did not return calls for comment as of Monday night.

The Rowdies are offering complimentary tickets to those who were stuck in the garage and can provide a parking receipt.

The Tampa Bay Rowdies are aware of parking difficulties before and after Saturday night's 2019 home opener, particularly at the McNulty Garage on 2nd St. S. The McNulty Garage is privately managed, and the Rowdies are working diligently with the operator of that facility to ensure Saturday night's issues are addressed properly for the benefit of our fans.

While Saturday's issues were outside of our control, the Rowdies apologize to those who had problems at the McNulty Garage. Affected fans can bring their home opener ticket and parking receipt to the box office at Al Lang Stadium to receive two complimentary tickets to a match of their choice in March or April.

MLS relegation: Major League Soccer row continues with Fifa president Gianni Infantino called to spark shakeup

The Fifa president was presented with a letter asking to bring the United States in line with the rest of the world

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has been dragged into the debate over introducing promotion and relegation to football in the USA.

Infantino was presented with a letter this weekend calling for FIFA to bring the US into line with the rest of the football world, by enforcing its Article 9 on the US Soccer Federation.

This represents the latest exertion of pressure on the USSF to introduce an “open system” in American football. The USSF is currently facing multiple legal challenges, including one at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, from football clubs hoping to open up the current closed hierarchy in the sport in the US.

This letter was written to USSF president Carlos Cordeiro, signed by hundreds of football clubs across the US who are hoping for reform.

The letter blames the unhealthy state of football in the US on the league structure, which has Major League Soccer perched at the top, accessible only to those who buy their way in: “The failure rate of clubs and leagues across the US soccer landscape vastly exceeds any other country in the world,” the letter says.

“Dozens of team owners from multiple leagues have seen their investments go to waste and hundreds if not thousands of players have seen their potential unrealised. In global soccer terms this situation is unique and, the evidence suggests, is a function of the exceptional nature of our closed model.”

Clubs and leagues across the US have continued to sign the letter over the weekend to register their opposition to the “closed model” of the USSF. “More than 20 new clubs have signed on to the letter in the last 48 hours and we expect that number to continue to rise,” organiser Dan Workman told The Independent.

“It has been a grassroots effort and we’ve seen support come from different areas and levels of the country. The interest level is high in the grassroots, but the Federation have shown little interest in organising a pyramid.”

This letter follows the launch last year of a high-profile legal challenge to the USSF’s closed system, also brought by two clubs from outside MLS.

Kingston Stockade play in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), effectively the fourth tier in the US, and were set up by FourSquare founder Dennis Crowley.

Miami FC play in NASL and are owned by Riccardo Silva, the Italian investor who set up sports rights company MP & Silva with Leeds United chairman Andrea Radrizzani.

Between them, Kingston Stockade and Miami FC brought a case to CAS, calling on FIFA to impose their own Article 9 on American football. Something they have been clearly unwilling to do in the past.

That case is due to be heard in May. This weekend’s letter has broadly the same goal as the CAS case, to push FIFA into pressuring USSF to open up the American game.

“Ultimately, you can’t ask the USSF politely to do this,” Crowley told The Independent last year about the CAS case. “They’re not interested. What we’re trying to do with the CAS filing is to say ‘listen, USSF has to play by Fifa’s rules.’

People have been trying to do this for years, and USSF has not been forced to respond. The thinking is that the CAS filing forces the issue, forces them to articulate their position, and hopefully forces them to make some changes here. The USSF has to acknowledge that this is part of Fifa’s rules.”

US third-tier side Richmond Kickers announce Charles Boateng signing from WAFA

American USL League One side Richmond Kickers have announced the signing of midfielder Charles Boateng on loan from Ghana Premier League side WAFA for the 2019 season.

The deal is pending approval from the United States Soccer Federation and the USL League One.

''Charles is a player that will be an unknown to many in the Richmond soccer community, but I bet he will not be one they forget,'' Kickers head coach David Bulow said.

''He’s a player with a lot of interest from MLS and USL Championship clubs, but due to some external factors, he has landed with the Richmond Kickers, and I couldn’t be more excited to work with such an exciting young prospect.''

Boateng was WAFA's top scorer for the first half of the 2017/2018 season.

He was a member of the Ghana U20 team which failed to qualify for the 2017 African Youth Championship.

A fashionable rugby shirt? Isn’t that a juxtaposition?

For his latest 24 Hours Wearing column, Jonathan Heaf, inspired by the Guinness Six Nations tournament, tries to tap into rugby's passion by kicking off his week in a Gucci rugby shirt. Style red card or converted for the win?

I mean, I’d have to think very hard before I’d wear a high-fashion rugby shirt such as this to an away match, say, to support England at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. What might be the correct sporting attire for a swift Negroni at the Connaught Bar in London might not be the right thing to wear while facing 80,000 native Welshman on their home turf. Still, you could say the same about skinny white jeans, couldn't you? Or David Beckham's (awesome) new pink-coloured kit for his Inter Miami CF football team. The solution? Wear the damn fashion shirt and support the team from the safety of your sofa. Final score? Hypebeasts 1, Basic Sporting Bros 0.

J King's Player Form Project Week 2- TBR v PGH

Player Impact Notes

Steinberger, Ekra, and Barry all shine in the positive impact department. Richards had a great game after a mum first week. Oduro was the only player in the negative as his plays tend to have a high variance of outcomes, but it's been his passing that's been his biggest weakness. Allen failed to make much of a mark on the game in general. Fernandes struggled in the first half but had a wicked second half that really showcased his potential as a wing playmaker and fearsome dribbler.

Stat Update

The Rowdies are the only team in the league with zero goals allowed.

The Rowdies are third to last in shot attempts with 13. The two teams below them have only played one game.

The Rowdies are second to last in passing accuracy at 65%. The only team below them are Baby Bulls at 64%

McCarthy has faced one shot. He has three catches.

Ekra has won 9 fouls and conceded only 2.

Oduro and Guenzatti have conceded 5 fouls.

Oduro has 5 interceptions.

Morad leads passing in the attacking half with 70%. Guenzatti is second with 66%. Tejada at 64%.

Fernandes has 3 key passes and 6 crosses completing 1 of them.

IMPRESSIVE STAT: Morad has completed 11 of his 18 long passes. Morad leads the team in pass accuracy with 82%.

Fernandes and Barry passing percentage is just below 60%.

This week will be a really good test, St. Louis gutted out a couple solid wins...

Rowdies Home Attendance Thread - Game 1 vs. Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC [3/16]

Attendance Thread

Well...Game 1 of the Rays era is in the books and per usual it was a sellout. Lots of nice surprises in the stadium as they definitely freshened up the place. It felt pretty full to me after the 20-30 minute mark (heard there were issues with parking). They definitely worked to sell it out. There was that $5 ticket flash sale, a discount for first responders and military - quite a few promotions. We announced 7,234 this year which is slightly down (-1.8%) versus the 7,368 for the opener in 2018. Will be interesting to see how this holds up as the season winds on. The good news? This is a professional ticketing operation with a far greater reach and that should help us out. The bad news? That organization has a bigger priority in selling tickets to the Rays. I believe we do have our own dedicated staff for ticket sales, but there will be a few games where they will be selling in competition to each other.

All in all a great start, great improvements, a great crowd, and a really great win.

Thanks for this.

My only worry is the need for a flash sale a week before the opening game. The negative stigma surrounding the Rays ownership group might hurt us. Tough to tell this early on but def something to keep an eye on.

Overall, the crowd def looked full around 30 minutes in. The game was excellent and the Mob sang the entire time. Glad to have my Rowdies back!

The flash sale concerned me, as well. I can't be certain of this, but I think we're a "late buying" type of event and that might have freaked out Rays brass – prompting the flash sale. There were lots of people looking for tickets on Saturday. We had people that kept coming up to us in the Mob booth that were looking for them.

From everything I hear internally, the Rays group has been really great and more professional overall. From a fan perspective, they dropped prices on concessions (biggest one I noticed was water going from $5 to $3), freshened up the stadium, and created a much cooler package for STH. I hope people give them credit where credit is due.

I was honestly shocked about the water thing. I grabbed 2 from a “beer girl” and she told $6. I assumed she meant each, as they were $5 each for the Invitational matches. I appreciate the good things the organization is doing. The ticketing process seems to be a bit of a mess right now. Ticketmaster didn’t have single game student tickets available for the opener. I usually bring my kid to home matches, so I hope that gets squared away. Parking pass hasn’t shown up yet, but they have my name on a list for Lot A, so I can’t REALLY complain.

Stadium looked great, the supporters section was LOUD!!

Concessions were rough from what I heard from my wife – hopefully they get all of that stuff sorted out.

They ran out of pizza and burgers at one of them and they had to get hotdogs from another concession which were lukewarm at best.

Go in person for student tickets; easier process. Just make sure you have your kid’s school id.

Calculations: Thoughts on attendance raised in Sell-Out post.

The issue of whether or not our first home match was actually sold out, was raised in another thread. But I thought it merited its own discussion.

I don't doubt Saturdays Sell-Out, but this is the first Rays-era match and I was away on business. Here are my thoughts on the matter itself. In the past, I could look through the stands and easily ballpark what the announced attendance would be. Personally speaking, they were always very consistent. But again, I had to miss this one. On the other hand, judging attendance from the broadcasts is nearly impossible for many reasons.

It takes a good 20 minutes into the match for everyone to get seated after the field entrance activities.

Standing areas: agenerally not ticked (never seen it), so occupied they get occupied by seat holders and GA patrons. This includes "The Hill", the area west of the Mid-field seats, *possibly the garden to the east of said stands (but they are probably part of a coporate mid-field seat package?), and now the new food truck area along Bayshore.

Those F*ing camera angles, always show our worst side.

Corporate packages in the midfield. Seat liscenses bring in good money, but not the ardent fans that stick around watching the match instead of schmoozing in the corporate tent. Ergo.... Empty seats may already be sold, but not visibly occupied. Same thing in the main stands. Groups buy a block of reserved seats which can't be double sold.

In the end, I always look forward to Dueces numbers! (Keep it going Mob brother!) It's hard to judge a venue geared towards families. Yet the Rowdies clearly draw a good crowd so all we're really talking about is semantics!

COYR!

Tickets were sold out, that much is certain. The reported number is 7,234. I gotta say, from what I remember at least...it didn't really look like that in the stands, but I could be wrong.

I was late to the game because of parking garages filling up and I saw a few people in Rowdies gear trying to find a space too.

Felt pretty full to me...I took this pic around the 35-40 min mark from what I remember. We noticed quite a few people standing at the Bayshore food truck area (which is actually a killer idea...buy a cheap seat and hang out at the field level, midfield).

View is great for a 5$ ticket

Not many stayed I counted maybe 15 that actually stayed to watch the match there and some 5 or 7 that sat at the tables to eat and left when they finished

Kane, North Carolina F.C. pitching new site for downtown sports stadium

RALEIGH

Prolific Raleigh developer John Kane and North Carolina Football Club owner Steve Malik are now pitching an alternative location for a downtown sports stadium in Raleigh.

Malik, in an interview with Spectrum News, said that he and Kane have 40 acres south of downtown “under control” for a potentially massive redevelopment, which could bring a Major League Soccer stadium, hotels and other amenities to a part of town that is starting to see a wave of investment.

North Carolina FC initially bid for an MLS franchise in late 2016 and is currently competing against cities like Sacramento, St. Louis, Charlotte and Detroit for a team. MLS currently has 24 teams, but it is expanding to 28 teams, with Miami and Nashville already promised spots. Many people believe the league could have more than 30 teams one day.

Save Lockhart Stadium For Future Generations

We have created this petition to ask you to sign on and support FXE Futbol's proposal to enhance the cultural and sports life of Fort Lauderdale with the renovation of historic Lockhart Stadium, a high level level pro soccer team that truly represents our community with over 30 acres of park space as well as new entertainment, dining and retail options. This plan is a spectacular solution for revitalizing Fort Lauderdale’s Uptown area with a much-needed infusion of economic activity there.

The city commission now has two proposals that aim to redevelop the area, one from FXE Futbol and the other from the Miami-based MLS effort Inter Miami CF (aka Miami Beckham United). The Beckham plan would have offices for their Miami MLS team, a modular stadium to host their farm team, the first two MLS seasons for their main team, and private fields for their team practices and an academy they want to run.

As residents of the greater Fort Lauderdale community, hardcore supporters of our previous pro club the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, and creators of our non-profit supporter-run amateur club Himmarshee FC, we have an immense sense of pride in our community and our sporting history and tradition at Lockhart Stadium. That is why we're supporting the FXE Futbol proposal, which will give us back our stadium and give us a team of our own again!

So please sign on and support this petition to let our elected officials know what we think is best for the future of the Fort Lauderdale community.

FXE Futbol's proposal will - click here to review

Fully Renovate Historic Lockhart Stadium
Bring a USL Championship (Division 2) team to Fort Lauderdale
Bring 1000+ jobs to the area
Create a large, diverse public park space with a beach, pond, and walking trails
Open space for multi-sport youth tournaments and leagues
Space for all-inclusive youth soccer leagues
Provide free-to-play fields
Bring new retail/dining options to the area
Bring a TopGolf location to help bring even more revenue to the area, stability, and entertainment options to the community

In addition, FXE Futbol has been around working on its proposal for over two years, and they created their proposal around the extensive community input that they gathered over that time and their renderings/plans reflect that. The Beckham group just showed up out of nowhere and submitted a hastily drawn-up proposal with big names and a Miami focus.

The Inter Miami proposal will - click here to review

Completely tear down the existing Lockhart Stadium structure
Build a modular 18,000 seat stadium that can be downsized if/when they get their $1 Billion project in Miami approved
Bring a USL League One (Division 3) farm team for their Inter Miami team
A space for elite level youth soccer teams (only ~120 kids will be able to participate)
Build marginal green space areas and outdoor verandas for the public

As a Rowdies fan, I hope to one day see the FTL Strikers reborn for the good of the historic Florida Derby. Lockhart is their home. David Beckham's MLS proposal has been unorganized and poorly developed for years, and yet MLS kept the red carpet rolled out for him. Their poor planning shouldn't be rewarded with the usurpation of another city's historic sports landmark.

Fort Lauderdale and it soccer fans deserve a team and facility focused on Fort Lauderdale, not a pop up temporary venue for a team that will leave for the 305.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/15/sports/soccer/robert-kraft-revolution.html

Robert Kraft’s Other Problem: Soccer

When Robert Kraft finishes dealing with solicitation charges in Florida, his soccer team could use some help.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Robert K. Kraft’s New England Patriots are a very good football team, having won six Super Bowl championships the past 19 years. They are 33-5 against the A.F.C. East division rival Buffalo Bills during that span.

In a cruel twist of fate, Robert Kraft’s other team that plays at Gillette Stadium, the New England Revolution, might as well be the Buffalo Bills of Major League Soccer. There was a run of dominance — four M.L.S. Cup Finals appearances in six years — without a championship, and a mostly fallow period now going on a decade. The team is below .500 (125-148-89) since 2008, the year after it went to its third straight M.L.S. Cup Finals.

Kraft has bigger concerns at the moment than the Revolution. He is facing two misdemeanor charges of soliciting prostitution at a massage parlor in Jupiter, Fla. (Kraft denies illegal activity.) Kraft most likely won’t face jail time, but the charges could result in a fine or a suspension or both from the National Football League, where he has become one of the most powerful owners, and from Major League Soccer, where he also enjoys a long, close relationship with the commissioner.
