Tampa Bay Rowdies: Show Me The Silverware!

Tampa Bay Rowdies: Show Me The Silverware!

Back circa 2008 or so, the then owners of the newly revived Tampa Bay Rowdies (later FC Tampa Bay, and later, thankfully, Tampa Bay Rowdies again) were talking about building a Soccer Specific Stadium (SSS) at the Tomato Patch site on Benjamin Road in Tampa (currently home field/central campus for the Tampa Bay United Rowdies Soccer Club).

As part of this SSS, they wanted to build a Rowdies Museum. This would have included, I assume, all of the Tampa Bay Rowdies trophies and silverware as well as items of historical note and interest related to the Rowdies. As we know, the Tomato Patch stadium never happened, and thus, no Rowdies Museum, and no Rowdies Trophy Room, alas.

Presumably, if/when the Rowdies join MLS and get their expanded Al Lang Stadium built, they will have a Rowdies Museum, Hall of Fame, and Trophy Room on site. So, I have to ask, where are the trophies now?

We know that the 1975 Soccer Bowl trophy has been used for years now as a trophy for an annual soccer competition between the University of Tampa and the University of South Florida, named the Rowdies Cup. We should be able to retrieve the original 1975 Soccer Bowl trophy for our new Rowdies Museum, and give UT/USF a new trophy for them to compete for in soccer.

While researching this post, I have found images of a new Rowdies Cup trophy currently in use for the annual competition between UT and USF, so perhaps this has already been done, and the new era Tampa Bay Rowdies now possess both the 1975 and the 2012 Soccer Bowl trophies?

What about the other trophies? Presumably the other Rowdies trophies and Rowdies memorabilia are still in the care of the Corbetts? Or have they already been passed on to the new era Tampa Bay Rowdies ownership? If so, we shall have an impressive trophy case.

If anyone reading this knows about the current status of all of the historical Tampa Bay Rowdies trophies and other significant memorabilia, let me and the other Fannies know about it. We are curious!

Below are the Rowdies (and Mutiny) achievements over the years; in bold I have put items for which I know there is an actual physical trophy, i.e., silverware. I'm unsure about a lot of these, but obviously league championships had a trophy. Also, the Soccer Bowl runner-up had a trophy; there's the famous picture of Rodney Marsh after his last game holding up the 1979 NASL Soccer Bowl runner-up trophy. It looks just like the Soccer Bowl champions trophy, just slightly smaller.

If/when the Rowdies get to MLS, I'd like MLS to recognize the Mutiny as an official incarnation of the Rowdies, which would make the 1996 MLS Supporters' Shield ours as well. There is a physical trophy for this, but I am uncertain at this time whether a new trophy is given out each year, or if there is a single trophy that is passed around. If the Mutiny had their own trophy to keep, I am uncertain as to where it is or who has possession of it. Presumably if MLS recognizes the Rowdies and Mutiny as being one entity, a replica could be made of the trophy if we cannot locate the original.

Why would MLS recognize the Rowdies and the Mutiny as being one entity? Well, first of all, it was obvious back in the day that the Mutiny name was chosen to be a bit like, but not really, the Rowdies name. MLS back then was just too scared to embrace the NASL legacy (even though they put a team in the Tampa Bay Area, despite having no owner, precisely because of the Tampa Bay Rowdies NASL legacy). That's changed now thanks to the San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders, Portland Timbers, Vancouver Whitecaps, etc.

Also, if the San Jose Clash could become the San Jose Earthquakes, and then have the team moved to Houston and become the Houston Dynamo, and then a new expansion team become the San Jose Earthquakes again, and the Clash/Earthquakes, old and new, still be considered one MLS entity, it isn't much of a stretch to see the Rowdies in MLS as a continuation of the Mutiny.

And of course, to conclude, I also assume that the 2012 NASL Soccer Bowl trophy is in the possession of the current Tampa Bay Rowdies ownership, i.e., Bill Edwards. So it should be safe, at least.

I saw the Rowdies trophies once in person, I think it was circa 1981 or thereabouts; my family had moved to California in August 1980 but I came back to visit Tampa (I am uncertain exactly when, but around 1981 or so) and happened to visit the Rowdies offices. They had a display case with the trophies.

I do know that all of the NASL outdoor and indoor championships had trophies; I have seen pictures of Eddie Firmani being carried by Rowdies players, holding the 1976 indoor trophy. And of course I have seen pictures of the NASL Soccer Bowl runner-up trophy as well.

Other trophies are more obscure; I do not know if, for example, the NASL gave out trophies for winners of divisions or winners of conferences or regular season winners, premierships, team with the most regular season points, etc.

I have no idea what the Copa de Puerto Rico was, apart from what the wiki says, and I don't know if the Mutiny received an actual trophy for winning it or not. I won't put this one in bold, but if we have possession of it, if it exists, we can add it to the trophy case.

I have seen pictures of the Coastal Cup. It ain't much. I believe it was just a single cup that was passed around from winner to winner; rather cheap looking; not sure who has it now. I'm not bothering to put that one in bold, either, as it was a "rivalry cup" and not an actual league trophy. If we have possession of this cup we can add it to the trophy case, too, I guess.

I can't find the old Wikipedia entry for the Ponce De Leon Cup; there used to be one but the link is dead and all I can find are Big Soccer threads about it, circa 2010-15 and a reddit thread from 2015 and something called a "Wikiwand". There is also some debate apparently whether there was an actual physical trophy for this; apparently there was one but it was destroyed in a warehouse fire? It was another rivalry cup and not a league trophy. So no bold.

Likewise I am not putting the NASL Fair Play award in bold either; no idea if there was a physical trophy for this or not.

Here's hoping that all of this silverware is one day (soon!) gathered together and on display at Al Lang Stadium, in our very own Trophy Room, with our own Hall of Fame and Museum!

While doing research for this post, I noticed images of this trophy; so apparently they are not using the original 1975 Soccer Bowl trophy any more for the Rowdies Cup (annual soccer competition between the University of South Florida and the University of Tampa). Does this mean that the current owners of the new era Tampa Bay Rowdies now have possession of the original 1975 Soccer Bowl trophy?

Nashville mayor vows MLS stadium with almost no public costs, it’d actually cost $75m-plus

Nashville Mayor Megan Barry released her proposal for a soccer stadium for a new MLS franchise yesterday, and this is how the Nashville Scene headlined it:

Mayor Proposes $275 Million Soccer Stadium Deal

Potential MLS team would be responsible for all but $25 million of fairgrounds stadium cost

Sounds pretty good, right? What’s that? What do you mean, “You’re just setting us up with a rosy headline so you can undermine it with the actual horrible facts, aren’t you?” Do you think you know me that well?

The actual horrible facts:

Of the $275 million in construction, land, and infrastructure costs, the Nashville Metro Council, a joint city-county governing body, would put up $250 million by selling bonds. The other $25 million would come from John Ingram, owner of Nashville S.C., a USL expansion club slated to begin play in 2018.

Ingram and his fellow owners would pay off the bonds via “a mixture of rent, captured taxes from revenue generated at the stadium and private investment,” according to the Scene. The Tennessean breaks that down: It’s actually $9 million a year in rent payments, plus $4 million a year from kicked-back state sales taxes from anything bought at the stadium and from a $1.75 surcharge per ticket.

If sales taxes and the ticket surcharge fall short of $4 million, Metro would be on the hook for the shortfall.

http://wusfnews.wusf.usf.edu/post/construction-starts-downtown-tampa-usf-college-medicine#stream/0

Construction Starts On Downtown Tampa USF College of Medicine

In December of 2011, Frank and Carol Morsani gave $20 million to the University of South Florida for a brand new medical college that would bear the name of the Tampa auto dealer and his wife.

Now, after six years of site selection, planning and infrastructure improvements, construction has finally begun on the USF Morsani College of Medicine and Heart Institute.

But the multi-story, 319,000 square foot facility isn’t being built on USF’s north Tampa campus. It’s going up as a cornerstone of Water Street Tampa, a $3 billion dollar development of 50 acres downtown.

In 2014, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn said a downtown medical school could be bigger than moving the Tampa Bay Rays to his side of the bay.

Three years later, the mayor spoke at a recent event marking the beginning of construction. Buckhorn, who happens to be married to Dr. Catherine Lynch, an Associate Vice President of USF Health, hasn’t changed his mind about the school’s importance to Tampa.

“Look at what we are on the verge of. Look at what this university has become. Look at what this medical school is becoming. Look at what this district is going to be. Five years, ten years from now, you’re not going to recognize this city,” Buckhorn said.

Water Street is designed by Strategic Property Partners, the real estate firm backed by Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeffrey Vinik and Cascade Investment. Their goal is to create a district where people will live, work, and play.

The United States Soccer Federation’s decision last winter to sanction both the North American Soccer League and the United Soccer League as Division II circuits has brought us the odd (and potentially temporary) situation where we have competing leagues at one level1.

For this look at attendance, I’m combining all the Division II teams into one table. Then, after the jump, come some notes.

Two NASL clubs jumped to the USL in the offseason. Has it made a difference? Tampa Bay’s average announced attendance is off less than two percent from the same number of home games as a year ago in the NASL, while Ottawa’s is down just under six percent.

Rowdies Home Attendance Thread - Game 15 vs. Bethlehem Steel FC [9/30] (self.TampaBayRowdies)

6,611 vs. Bethlehem Steel on Saturday. Despite threats of rain throughout the day, it was another successful Go Gold night. Anecdotally there were more people on the field for the pregame walk-up tunnel than I have ever seen before. (I thought it was close to 500 people on the field pregame).

Wednesday brings the home regular season finale. Last year we drew 7,641 for that game - we certainly won't top it for a Wednesday game, but here are two numbers to watch. We need 5,010 in order to be able to top last season's average and make it 6 years in a row of consecutive growth (even if it's just barely over breakeven). We would need 6,946 in order to average over 6,000 for the season.

Ticket sales look decent at this point, but I'm going to guess we'll land more likely in the 5k range for this one.

The Buzz: Rick Baker as hipster and other developments in the St. Petersburg mayoral race ...

Rick Baker hasn't gone full hipster yet, but before St. Pete's mayoral race ends we won't be entirely shocked to see Mayor Rick Kriseman's challenger sporting a man bun, nerdy glasses and forearm loaded with tats (tattoos, for those of you in Baker's generation).

Look at the ex-mayor's latest TV ads and his sharp new "Baker Blueprint" website, bakerstpete.com, and you'll see what we mean. The site features an image of Baker, purple shirt untucked beneath his dark jacket and sneakers peeking out below his black jeans.

His latest TV ads, one filmed at the Chattaway restaurant and the other at Bananas Music, feature Baker variously sporting a white T-shirt and dark shades and a black T and dark shades. The more clever of the two, at Bananas, has the shades-wearing Baker dropping off vinyl records with a guitar slung over his shoulder. Rick Baker, rock 'n' roll outlaw.

Baker's big time mid-life crisis? A cry for help?

NYC is the Next Arena Fight as Leiweke and Dolan Take on Steinbrenner

A new venue battle lead by James Dolan and Tim Leiweke’s Oak View Group is taking shape in New York City, but this time the rival is not AEG. OVG is in competition with the New York Yankees’ Steinbrenner family over 43 acres of underutilized parking lots at Belmont Park, just outside of Queens on Long Island.

OVG wants to build a new arena on the site for the New York Islanders hockey team, which is unhappy with the Barclays Center in Brooklyn where the team has played the last two seasons after relocating from Nassau Coliseum that the Barclays Center now operates. The Steinbrenner family wants to build an MLS soccer stadium on the site for their New York City FC soccer team, which currently plays at Yankee Stadium.

Hillsborough, Pinellas pair up to pitch Bay Area for Amazon's HQ2

TAMPA (FOX 13) - County leaders from Hillsborough and Pinellas counties are putting their heads together in hopes that Amazon's second headquarters, dubbed HQ2, makes the Bay Area its home.

President and CEO of the Hillsborough Economic Development Corporation Craig Richard believes a project like this one could re-shape the area's economic outlook.

"This is the Super Bowl of economic development projects," Richard said. "There are none bigger. This is a project with over 50,000 high-paying jobs, the type of project that can remake a community and a region."

A statement from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos reads: "We expect HQ2 to be a full equal to our Seattle headquarters. Amazon HQ2 will bring billions of dollars in up-front and ongoing investments, and tens of thousands of high-paying jobs."

#MLS2StPete - The Rowdies vs. The Mutiny

Jonathan Arnholz

Published on May 9, 2017

On May 2, 2017, Tampa Bay took a step forward in its bid to join Major League Soccer when residents of St. Petersburg, FL voted overwhelmingly in favor of allowing the St. Pete government to negotiate with Tampa Bay Rowdies owner Bill Edwards on a lease extension vital to the team's plans to expand Al Lang Stadium should the region be awarded a slot in MLS' league expansion.

With the #MLS2StPete movement earning a major victory, many critics point to the failure of original MLS team Tampa Bay Mutiny (1996-2001) as a sign that Tampa Bay can't support a top-tier soccer team. This video analyzes the struggles the Mutiny faced and how the current Rowdies bid has turned those weaknesses into strengths.

Rocco's Message: 'Shame on anyone that tried to shut our club down' [NASL v. USSF] (frontrowsoccer.com)

As much as I dislike his whining he has made some good points at least from what I heard on that phone call. Business is business, but any city/town in the U.S. should be allowed to have their own team. How else can we find youth if we keep restricting and putting territory markings on certain areas by the MLS/USL if true or not. This is the thing that DCFC has been fearing in Detroit by the MLS2Detriot team; while yes the people get to choose who to support, it should be without strong-arming schemes such as marking territory using the U.S. law to dictate where they can't stream their games or produce content from. It's the same issue with Tampa/Orlando as well while I don't believe Orlando own anything in Tampa business-wise they have been able to share the wealth of youth players and such. Until we get further details are made I'm on Rocco's side for now only because I would love to have a team here in my hometown where I believe there is potential.
