Nashville Mayor Megan Barry released her proposal for a soccer stadium for a new MLS franchise yesterday, and this is how the Nashville Scene headlined it:

Mayor Proposes $275 Million Soccer Stadium Deal

Potential MLS team would be responsible for all but $25 million of fairgrounds stadium cost

Sounds pretty good, right? What’s that? What do you mean, “You’re just setting us up with a rosy headline so you can undermine it with the actual horrible facts, aren’t you?” Do you think you know me that well?

The actual horrible facts:

Of the $275 million in construction, land, and infrastructure costs, the Nashville Metro Council, a joint city-county governing body, would put up $250 million by selling bonds. The other $25 million would come from John Ingram, owner of Nashville S.C., a USL expansion club slated to begin play in 2018.

Ingram and his fellow owners would pay off the bonds via “a mixture of rent, captured taxes from revenue generated at the stadium and private investment,” according to the Scene. The Tennessean breaks that down: It’s actually $9 million a year in rent payments, plus $4 million a year from kicked-back state sales taxes from anything bought at the stadium and from a $1.75 surcharge per ticket.

If sales taxes and the ticket surcharge fall short of $4 million, Metro would be on the hook for the shortfall.

Construction Starts On Downtown Tampa USF College of Medicine

In December of 2011, Frank and Carol Morsani gave $20 million to the University of South Florida for a brand new medical college that would bear the name of the Tampa auto dealer and his wife.

Now, after six years of site selection, planning and infrastructure improvements, construction has finally begun on the USF Morsani College of Medicine and Heart Institute.

But the multi-story, 319,000 square foot facility isn’t being built on USF’s north Tampa campus. It’s going up as a cornerstone of Water Street Tampa, a $3 billion dollar development of 50 acres downtown.

In 2014, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn said a downtown medical school could be bigger than moving the Tampa Bay Rays to his side of the bay.

Three years later, the mayor spoke at a recent event marking the beginning of construction. Buckhorn, who happens to be married to Dr. Catherine Lynch, an Associate Vice President of USF Health, hasn’t changed his mind about the school’s importance to Tampa.

“Look at what we are on the verge of. Look at what this university has become. Look at what this medical school is becoming. Look at what this district is going to be. Five years, ten years from now, you’re not going to recognize this city,” Buckhorn said.

Water Street is designed by Strategic Property Partners, the real estate firm backed by Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeffrey Vinik and Cascade Investment. Their goal is to create a district where people will live, work, and play.

The United States Soccer Federation’s decision last winter to sanction both the North American Soccer League and the United Soccer League as Division II circuits has brought us the odd (and potentially temporary) situation where we have competing leagues at one level1.

For this look at attendance, I’m combining all the Division II teams into one table. Then, after the jump, come some notes.

Two NASL clubs jumped to the USL in the offseason. Has it made a difference? Tampa Bay’s average announced attendance is off less than two percent from the same number of home games as a year ago in the NASL, while Ottawa’s is down just under six percent.
