I disagree. Failing to qualify for the 1986 World Cup was a far darker moment in US soccer history, as the US had also lost the bid to host the 1986 World Cup and the NASL had folded a few years prior. I remember. That was far darker. The difference was, back then there were a lot fewer of us who noticed or cared. Now, however, there are a lot more of us who notice and care. That makes a difference.
