(I'll do one more final update after the USL season when all other league numbers are complete to see where we fall in the total landscape.)

Well...last night was a tough one from a crowd perspective. Getting our season finale on a Saturday night was not optimal. Here's hoping we can get some results, so this wasn't our last time in Al Lang for the year. 5,260 was the official number for last night - but I imagine a lot of STH didn't make the trek downtown. It was still a pretty respectable in-person crowd (and an energized one from about the 20 minute mark on).

This does bring our season average to 5,894 an ever-so-slight improvement on last year's 5,878. The ticket price increase probably hurt (about 800 Sideline Reserve seats went from $32 to $48), the loss of local rivals probably hurt, but the added marketing relative MLS2StPete could have helped a bit. All in all it was a bit of a wash, but it does mean 6 straight years of attendance growth for the Rowdies - a pretty impressive run.

Clay Berling, Soccer America founder, dies at age 86

In 1967, Clay Berling took his wife and six children to see the Oakland Clippers play because the soccer game presented the only affordable opportunity to bring his entire family to the Oakland Coliseum, which had been constructed the year before. He fell in love with soccer on that day.

For less than $10, Berling and his family watched the Clippers in action in the National Professional Soccer League, which later merged with the United Soccer Association to create the NASL. He left impressed with the skills and teamwork, saw what he believed was a perfect sport for children, and immediately got involved in Northern California youth and adult soccer, serving in a variety of capacities including league commissioner.

Hungry for soccer news but unable to find it, Berling launched a biweekly newsletter called Soccer West that quickly went national and was renamed Soccer America in 1972 and became a weekly magazine.
