The end of RFK makes me more emotional than I really expected. I lost touch with DC United over the years but some of my first soccer memories were at RFK with my parents or youth soccer team cheering guys like Marco Etcheverry and John Harkes and Jaime Moreno on, believing in my heart of hearts that they were the 3 best players in the world. I remember being 8 years old and crying when Zach Thornton stood on his head and Chicago beat DC United in the MLS Cup final. My mom told me to shut up but I told her it was unfair. She laughed at me, and I get why.

RFK was fun. The last time I went to a game there was a couple of years ago. I don't think it was my last time going to a game there but on top of the memories of being a kid watching the OG DC United teams my more recent memory that'll stick with me is a game from I think 2 years ago, a hot sweaty mess of a night in DC, a sloppy game against RSL filled with golazos and horrible defending that ended up being I think a 6-4 win for DC. I yelled and sang my ass off and ended up soaked in the beer that was flying in every direction as the goals kept coming.. I just had a fucking amazing night.

There's something about RFK closing right as the news about Columbus breaks just gives me immense sadness. I feel like I've gone through an entire cycle as a US Soccer fan - giddy star struck kid, BigSoccer wannabe expert/scout, too-cool-for-school European soccer connosieur, early-to-mid 20's target demographic resurgent MLS supporter, and more and more I've arrived at my natural resting place: jaded and disappointed in MLS and where they're taking this sport in this country. RFK was a connection for me to when sports were more innocent. Now I can't not see past the ruthless venture capitalists who are fine with ruining our sport or leaving entire cities and fanbases devastated if it means they get a quick buck.

Fuck me I don't know why I'm sharing any of this. RIP RFK. You were a great place to watch soccer, don't let the haters get you down. I hope Audi Field is great for DC United fans but for all of the good that'll come from finally modernizing, it's just not gonna be the same anymore, is it?
