OVG is in competition with the New York Yankees’ Steinbrenner family over 43 acres of underutilized parking lots at Belmont Park, just outside of Queens on Long Island.
OVG wants to build a new arena on the site for the New York Islanders hockey team, which is unhappy with the Barclays Center in Brooklyn where the team has played the last two seasons after relocating from Nassau Coliseum that the Barclays Center now operates. The Steinbrenner family wants to build an MLS soccer stadium on the site for their New York City FC soccer team, which currently plays at Yankee Stadium.

On May 2, 2017, Tampa Bay took a step forward in its bid to join Major League Soccer when residents of St. Petersburg, FL voted overwhelmingly in favor of allowing the St. Pete government to negotiate with Tampa Bay Rowdies owner Bill Edwards on a lease extension vital to the team's plans to expand Al Lang Stadium should the region be awarded a slot in MLS' league expansion.
With the #MLS2StPete movement earning a major victory, many critics point to the failure of original MLS team Tampa Bay Mutiny (1996-2001) as a sign that Tampa Bay can't support a top-tier soccer team. This video analyzes the struggles the Mutiny faced and how the current Rowdies bid has turned those weaknesses into strengths.

As much as I dislike his whining he has made some good points at least from what I heard on that phone call. Business is business, but any city/town in the U.S. should be allowed to have their own team. How else can we find youth if we keep restricting and putting territory markings on certain areas by the MLS/USL if true or not. This is the thing that DCFC has been fearing in Detroit by the MLS2Detriot team; while yes the people get to choose who to support, it should be without strong-arming schemes such as marking territory using the U.S. law to dictate where they can't stream their games or produce content from. It's the same issue with Tampa/Orlando as well while I don't believe Orlando own anything in Tampa business-wise they have been able to share the wealth of youth players and such. Until we get further details are made I'm on Rocco's side for now only because I would love to have a team here in my hometown where I believe there is potential.
