https://medium.com/supporters-union/mls-in-austin-via-columbus-ohio-e3e2ebd25726

…Via Columbus, Ohio?

Welcome to the next in a series of articles where we discuss possible scenarios which bring Major League Soccer to Austin, Texas. In this piece, we explore the Columbus Crew considering a relocation to Austin. The origin of this story was a question by a member at our 1/29 meetup about Austin getting a team via relocation instead of expansion.

We’ll preface this saying this is speculative — but we also have heard some things. We aren’t advocating a Columbus move or claim that they have stated publicly that they plan to. However, out of all the existing teams, they are statistically the only probable team to move outside of their current market. In short: It warrants a moment’s consideration.

We’re still confident in the long-term outcome of earning a MLS team here in Austin — if it were to come by relocating a team here, we’d be equally happy with that.

Red Bulls Arena set to be home of New York's rugby league team in 2019 (bbc.com)

---------------------------------------------------------------------

League? Union is where is at, at least in popularity. Why league?

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Union is bigger but I think league might be more attractive to US/Canadian audiences since it's more similar to gridiron football than union is. union is bigger here right now but it's such a small presence that it doesn't really matter.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

League is easier to explain to a football fan.

Instead of four downs, you have six tackles. It's pretty straightforward.

Union is much more nuanced regarding possession, and feels more like soccer.

I like both, but only watch Union during the World Cup or occasional showcase matches. As for league, I'll try to catch the NRL Grand Final, but it just feels way less developed internationally.

Either as, as with MLS, I welcome either codes growth in the US!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

As long as they don't wreck the field I'm OK with this...

Red Bull's philosophy on use of the Arena has been to restrict use to events that may produce future fans for our club. Given the new operating relationship with Harrison more and different events not all tied to that philosophy are envisioned...this one however fits squarely into our traditional take on use...

Go for it...

Plans submitted for New York rugby league team to enter English game

Plans for a New York rugby league team to follow Toronto Wolfpack into the English game have been submitted to the Rugby Football League.

Toronto were promoted from Ligue 1 to the Championship, the game's second tier, at the first attempt last season.

The consortium for the New York club hopes to get the go-ahead in time to enter the competition in 2019 at Championship level.

They are confident of building a fan base of 10,000 in the first year.

"We have a small consortium of high-networking individuals, one member of which has made New York his home, and all have a significant love for the game," said co-founder Tom Scott.

Like Toronto, who drew crowds of 7,000 last season, the New York club would not seek central funding and say they have already secured a $10m (£7.51m) investment.

The New York organisers say the team would also cover all travel and accommodation costs of visiting teams and play in blocks of home and away fixtures.

The plans have been tabled eight years before the United States is set to co-host the World Cup with Canada.

"We want to grow the sport in North America and increase the pool of players which would ultimately increase the chances of success for the USA national team," said the club's other co-founder Ricky Wilby.

The team would play at the 25,000-seater Red Bull Arena in New Jersey, with the consortium confident of attracting a television deal and having pledged to spread the game into schools and the local community.

Toronto founder Eric Perez says he will launch a second Canadian club in the next six months and predicts there could be up to six North American teams within five years.

The Ray Parlour › USSF Division 2 Pro Leagues 2017: we literally do not know

---------------------------------------------------------------------

They would have had a chance had the owners hired actual front office specialists instead of literally trying to crowdsource attendance through word of mouth.

Also their ticket prices, for American D2 soccer, were hilarious.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

IIRC Sacramento Republic and Tampa Bay Rowdies have similar ticket prices but manage to sell tickets anyway. But they do have professional front office ticket specialists to actually sell tickets.

Columbus Crew moving to Austin? This was not how I envisioned Austin getting its team back. Bad karma from Orlando.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I’m as bewildered as you are.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

So now some of the MLS reserve teams in USL are dropping out next year.

Coming next year - "USSF Division 2 Pro Leagues 2018: we still literally do not know".

The Ray Parlour › MLS 2017: I'm gonna git you, soccer

---------------------------------------------------------------------

moving teams is shit but austin would be a very very good mls market if they built something downtownish there

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The story linked here has more context - they'd play in the University of Texas's football stadium initially while looking to build downtown.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Reminder that Crew Stadium isn’t even twenty god damned years old and Precourt wants public funds in THIS climate to build a stadium. Fuck him. Fuck him especially for doing that to a team with history.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Columbus owner Anthony Precourt is set to announce in a press conference on Tuesday that he will move his team to Austin in 2019 if a downtown soccer stadium for the Crew cannot be finalized in the next year.

yikes

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Hahaha there’s like no place to put it that’s any closer to downtown than it already is.

If you want more people put it somewhere in Dublin closer to the soccer burbs where white people aren’t afraid to go.

E: for those unfamiliar, you can literally be downtown from the stadium in a car in 5 minutes on most days

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Aww, it's cute that he thinks he has leverage here?

(also why the hell does he think he'd do better in Austin, didn't they lose their USL team to Orlando five years ago and not improve the situation much at all since then?)

edit: ^^^^Also given this, lol what is he even asking for? The original teams are in a panoply of iffy situations compared to the post-Toronto expansion teams but Columbus would have been the last of them I expected to snap first, they've seemed solidly middling in their fortunes.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The stadium is admittedly in a really iffy part of town but it’s not dangerous to go to games either. Downtown, there’s really no place to put it and any place that might exist is going to be as far away as it is now in an equally shitty part of town.

The Biggest issue attendance wise probably is the location, but not in terms of distance from downtown.

Local people are saying they sent out a survey to fans so basically Precourt looked for a path people wouldn’t support so he could pin his douchery on the city and act like it’s not his fault.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for the local context. That entire wave of stadiums located "basically anywhere near the cities we're based in that will take us" that were the initial SSS brain-wave before BMO Field has clearly backfired all over the place, but Columbus is nowhere near the worst off in that regard (see: Chicago, Dallas, arguably LAG) and I can't imagine how anyone will believe he isn't entirely to blame here whatever groundwork he laid.

I can't imagine this is the kind of publicity the league wanted right before the playoffs so I am curious how they'll spin matters in the morning and how this'll develop in the next few days. If he genuinely wants out of town I wonder if he wants to sell instead?

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The articles that are flying around on si.com and else where say a group of Columbus businessmen tried to buy the team from Precourt at either the full 100% or 50% ownership and he refused.

He is obviously deadset on moving the team.

I am fucking crushed.

It makes so much sense now why the marketing for the team has been non-existent, and why any stadium upgrades have been non-existent. He has obviously wanted to move the team from the start of the 2016 season. What an absolute fucker.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Christ, a team for Dallas, Houston AND Austin? Just setting the stage for Texas to be the worst state in the union at soccer.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah as a guy from Seattle I understand the bullshit of an owner who is desperate to move at all costs.

Also I just realized this move explains why this was going on awhile back... http://www.mystatesman.com/sports/soccer/mls-trademarks-possible-names-for-potential-austin-franchise/ebRZrUnOnfwMjpYYywBXZL/

At the time people were confused because the Aztex or whatever had an utterly terrible bid for expansion, but now it seems clear that it was a relocation not expansion moving the gears.

Can't wait to watch the AA play!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Had the same thought, this is really Clay Bennett-ish. God damn it, this is awful. But the only thing to say is, don't give in, don't give him a fucking cent for a new stadium. If the league is dumb enough to let him move then he can watch his team wither on the vine.

Cities are finally getting wise to this scam but it'll take a couple more LA Chargers-style fiascos before owners start getting the hint that moving away from a team's history is an idiotic idea. Or maybe they never will and this whole thing will fall apart.

If nothing else, sports failsons are pushing me further toward full throated advocacy of extremely high estate taxes.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I've said we need to replace most of the original teams' owners with people that actually want to make an effort, but ideally not like this.

Yes, this literally never happens outside the US, and it certainly never happens in P/R leagues, especially not as an attempt to avoid relegation.

Professional sport is a business, and this is a natural consequence of that. All over the world (it is rarer in Europe but there is a world outside Europe), privately owned teams that can't financially keep up with their competition in their current location crash down the divisions, or fold (sometimes as a result of the first), or move in hopes finding a more amenable fan base. Some places have laws to stop the last option: I wonder how far something like that would get in the US with the current government? It would certainly find public support.

I also wonder if those local businessmen who tried to buy the team out think the city wants a phoenix team in the USL, or that they could properly market one to the city (Precourt seems not to have really tried), or that they would have any success seeking an expansion team? The counterargument to "relegation would kill teams" is "loyal support in lower divisions and, worst case scenario, phoenix clubs". Maybe the oldest soccer market in the current era could make that work?

There wasn't a big process when AEG moved the original Earthquakes to Houston, but I don't really recall there being an extended blackmail scenario either, just "AEG's tried to make this work and put tons of money into it, the situation isn't sustainable with the current stadium deal, so the league's approved a relocation of the team." Garber is making similar noises this morning: it suggests that relocation approval will depend on whatever deal Precourt could find elsewhere.

Reading the articles, it's really mum what he's asking for in Columbus besides "a stadium in a location people actually want to go to" - is he after public money or approval for a land sale or flexible zoning or what? The new Aztex had a hell of a time finding a new stadium after their old one flooded, I don't know what reason he has to think he'd be more successful there.

In the prior case, the league kept the Quakes' brand and history and records in reserve until they brought a new team to SJ - I haven't seen anyone ask if they would do the same for Columbus if this happened.

The Ray Parlour › MLS 2017: I'm gonna git you, soccer

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Garber more or less gave the ok in the joint statement PSV released, this seems like a done deal.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

This problem, in its causes and its scope, is unquestionably unique to the US. The UK section of that article includes Arsenal moving from Woolwich to Highbury, ffs. What happens elsewhere in the world doesn't compare to the US at all. And what's infuriating is that YOU KNOW THIS, everyone knows this, you're just being a stubborn piece of shit because someone rightly criticized the backwater league you've got a giant boner for.

I don't give a fuck about the rest of the dumb shit you posted. Your ignorance and refusal to acknowledge the cause of this problem is quite literally the reason this shit still happens.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Precourt has already poisoned the well at this point, even *if* a new stadium deal were to happen, he's now persona non grata in this city. The only solution for the current team to stay here is to switch ownership.

edit:

He had no intention of keeping the team here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

If Precourt wants taxpayer money for a downtown stadium then good fucking riddance. Fuck the shit ass MLS structure and this shit ass owner. He can go be a curiosity to the Austin hipsters for a year then wonder why nobody's coming to see mediocre-at-best soccer in a market that was never asking for it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope Austin isn't stupid enough to pony up public money for a stadium for this but I'm not holding my breath

I'd go to a game just for fun but ugh (I wish we still had the Ice Bats, I missed out on that)

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I wonder if they'll promote Cincinnati FC as a way to compensate Ohio.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

This is like putting a team in LA to compensate California for losing a team in San Diego.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

https://www.mls2atx.com at the bottom: “Copyright 2017 MLS2ATX | All Rights Reserved — Precourt Sports Ventures”

Done deal.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Now you've got tickets to a protest party. I'm going to tune into matches on MLS Live just to see the signs.

Also I don't understand why Wicka has such a boner for this league he doesn't like or watch. We all know it's structured poorly and seems to be overly reliant on franchise fees but he and all of the other MLS haters can't tell you when the league will fail nor are they willing to talk about success stories like Atlanta without saying they're simply outliers. I am 100% confident if they were to put a date on their dire predictions we would all watch it pass with the league intact and attendance up in some places and down in others.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Cincinnati is home to maybe the worst stadium deal public sector screw job around so I hope to god they don't try to lure MLS with a shiny new facility.

Not a small part of FCC's success is playing in a old ass stadium with actual personality in an young urban environment,

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Empty bleachers are both protest and proof of concept.

In a better world, teams wouldn’t move. They’d get relegated. Wicka sees, like a lot of people see, that there could be a thriving ground for developing Americans, making a bit of money, AND having a watchable, competitive league. And what we’ve gotten since the Beckham experiment is money marks and grifters.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Pro/rel and professional sports being operated for some undefined public benefit what else is on the wish list

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Every MLS supporter group should come out and say they will boycott the league if they allow this.

Do a credit card dispute

---------------------------------------------------------------------

What predictions? It’s a mediocre league that will be this exact level forever unless it makes major structural changes. No one is predicting collapse. It’s just a bad, pointless league that does nothing for American soccer. And all these problems are avoidable! We know where it’s flawed and how it should be run, and we get told over and over again that it can’t work here for various mysterious reasons, even as MLS sits and does nothing of note, and all the better run leagues are orders of magnitude more popular among Americans.

The Ray Parlour › MLS 2017: I'm gonna git you, soccer

---------------------------------------------------------------------

This is honestly what I'm thinking. If the local bidders leaked this in the first place, it's almost a :masterstroke: on their part. Precourt flips out like a comic book villain and goes out even further on that bridge (seriously, an MLS2ATX astroturf site with a Precourt Sports Ventures copyright notice?), but he's still going to struggle to get even a mildly satisfactory deal in Austin if the team they HAD couldn't do it, twice, and he'll still be toxic in Columbus to boot. Whatever new offer they might make to him to cut his losses would look a lot more tempting in that situation.

An upside of Our Dumb League here is that they're in a better position to force him out if he's genuinely making them look bad, but on the other hand there actually IS room for improvement in the team's stadium situation (it was the first SSS and from all reports from angry Crew fans today it's rather Spartan). Ownership that's genuinely inclined to work with the city to fix that somehow could do a world of good.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

So there's late-night scuttlebutt from Brian Strauss and others that 2-4 of the MLS teams that have full reserve teams in the USL might not bring them back for next year. Suspects floated about are Orlando, Philly, NYRB, and Seattle.

Apparently it's part the MLS organizations going "Hey it turns out we have to spend money on these guys and we don't like it" and part the USL going "Yeah so we want to be D2 so you guys with your hundreds of people who show up to games are actually bad for us now".

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Orlando, Red Bull, and Seattle can have their junior squads go away and I wouldn't give a rat's ass. I would like to see Bethlehem Steel stay around, though, if only because a) they have an actual identity, and b) that identity has local historical roots.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

From what I've read, this scenario would have Sounders 2 start back up when the small soccer stadium is ready in Tacoma.

The Bethlehem situation is all on the Philadelphia front office, as apparently they didn't hire local people run to run sales for Bethlehem Steel and it resulted in ticket sales low enough that about 75% of butts in seats were from freebies.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I mean the MLS essentially pissed away a few million dollars on bad reserve teams to bulk up the USL and kill the NASL, not the worst trade in the world. Then they can just reform the teams later if they want in D-3, its not like it is really going to change much. Meanwhile they can just loan some guys out to other USL teams.
