Deadpool makes appearance in FOX’s World Cup TV ad [VIDEO]

FOX Sports has unveiled a new World Cup TV commercial that features Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds and David Beckham to promote the coverage of the world’s greatest sports tournament that will be held on Russian soil this summer.

Other stars featured in the video include Joel Embiid, Alex Morgan and Evander Holyfield.

But in the entire 90 second commercial, there’s not one mention or graphic to let the viewer know who the host country is. It’s almost as if FOX Sports doesn’t want people to know that Russia is hosting the tournament!

In the video, it’s being targeted to sports fans that have no clue the World Cup is happening this summer (cue the opening lines of the ad that mention, “Hey, do you realize what’s about to happen this summer?”)

If you’ve been paying attention to the World Cup commercials from FOX Sports so far, you’ll recognize several of the scenes in the commercial below.

Integrity fears hit US leagues after sport betting ruling

Integrity key to MLB, MLS

Major League Baseball said in a statement the ruling would have "profound effects" on the league.

"As each state considers whether to allow sports betting, we will continue to seek the proper protections for our sport, in partnership with other professional sports.

"Our most important priority is protecting the integrity of our games. We will continue to support legislation that creates air-tight coordination and partnerships between the state, the casino operators and the governing bodies in sports toward that goal."

Next year marks a century since eight Chicago White Sox players were accused of taking money from gamblers to lose the World Series, with those involved in the "Black Sox" scandal permanently banned from baseball.

Also exiled for life was all-time major league hits leader Pete Rose, found to have gambled on games while manager of the Cincinnati Reds.

Major League Soccer said it is "supportive" of the decision in a statement, but noted, "we also believe that it is critical that state legislatures and other regulatory bodies work closely with the professional sports leagues in the United States to develop a regulatory framework to protect the integrity of each of our respective sports".

The National Hockey League said the decision "paves the way to an entirely different landscape — one in which we have not previously operated" in a statement and vowed to review league policies and practices to see if adjustments were needed. — AFP

Republic FC has had a lot of turnover. Why another team leader is changing his role

Republic FC made some big changes coming into this season. The USL club announced yet another major move Tuesday.

Warren Smith, a co-founder of the team who is the president, is stepping down from that role. He will stay on as a senior adviser while also taking on a senior adviser position for OKC Energy FC, another USL team.

“It has been, and will continue to be, an honor to work alongside the talented SRFC staff as well as our devoted fans to build this club from the ground up for our Indomitable City,” Smith said in a release on the team's website. “Together as a region, we have already accomplished so much and we are only just getting started. I love and believe in Sacramento and our abilities when we are unified in our fight for our city.

Tampa Bay’s Brewery Boom Making Imprint On Beer World

Tampa Bay area now a destination for hop-heads

This week is American Craft Beer Week, a celebration of America’s growing industry of locally-brewed craft beers. Craft beer can come across as a niche pursuit complete with its own language, but at its core it is a movement of small, locally-minded businesses that typically work together with each other and other local businesses.

There are so many of these breweries these days that lovers of beer need the guidance of numerous websites to navigate their way through it all. Craftbeer.com is one of those sites, a go-to destination for beer lovers. News Talk Florida was able to speak with Jess Baker, editor-in-chief of Craftbeer.com about the industry, and Tampa Bay’s unique place in it.

It’s hard to miss the amount of breweries popping up around Tampa Bay. It seems that a new one is popping up every single week. From Brandon and Riverview to Pasco County, there appears to be at least one craft beer institution per neighborhood.

“More than 80% of Americans of drinking age live within ten miles of a craft brewery, so it truly is your community,” says Baker. “I’ve seen breweries who are barely making money for themselves, but still writing checks to charities that they believe in because for them it’s all about reinvesting where they live.

The brewing boom in Tampa Bay has not gone unnoticed nationally. A number of Florida’s beers, especially from the Tampa Bay area, are gaining notoriety nationwide. Hunaphu’s Day, an event put on in March by Cigar City Brewing Company, is something people plan entire vacations around. The event is shaped around the limited release of a unique stout, a must-have for the beer traveler.

That’s right: Beer traveler. Beer has nearly risen to wine’s level of travel based around tastings. San Diego, Portland and Denver have long been standards of beer travel, but Tampa Bay is becoming considered a destination approaching the same level.

What makes Tampa Bay stand out among beer destinations is that there is not necessarily one style that has become a local specialty. In the kind of situation that can only happen in a place like Florida, so many brewers have relocated to the area that styles from all over became popular here.

It is worth noting that the phrase craft beer is new, but the concept is not necessarily as new. “Craft breweries” were not too long ago referred to as “microbreweries,” but that term became insufficient when certain brands such as Samuel Adams and Goose Island became national. Many were purchased by larger companies like Anheuser-Busch parent InBev as well, making brands such as Magic Hat anything but “micro” anymore regardless of its beginnings.

With so many breweries opening, and only a certain percentage of the population who seeks out different kinds of craft beer, one might wonder how all of these places manage to stay in business. On the outside it all looks extremely saturated.

Baker suggests that a sense of community is bringing these places together, and working together is helping these places thrive together. In a way they’re not competing with one another, but instead sharing the same market. Go to a local taproom and the bartender may just be wearing a shirt from another brewery. Ask about it and they’ll recommend places for you.

“That is part of what is so cool about small and independent craft brewers. They’re small businesses in your area,” says Baker. “That camraderie of the industry is one of the things that I was so attracted to (about craft beer)”, says Baker. “Even when it comes to food trucks, local artists, comedians, breweries have become a community meeting place.”

These are local businesses first and foremost. They get their ingredients locally, they’re inspired by local culture, and they often partner with other local businesses. Many brewery taprooms save parking spaces for food trucks, or use a local coffee shop’s special blend for one of their beers, or a local chocolatier works with them. Cigar City Brewing Company, predictably, sells hand-rolled cigars along with their beers.

Some of these small breweries do some impressive business. Tampa’s Cigar City can be found throughout most of the east, with wide distribution and a word-of-mouth reputation that laid the groundwork for it. Big Storm Brewing Company has two different locations and serves as an official sponsor for both the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Rowdies.

As for style, Tampa Bay is spoiled with different varieties everywhere. It is known as one of the better places in the country to get a dark beer, but also has a number of highly-regarded beers like IPAs that would be known as hop-forward.

What is the difference between all these styles? Much like the many varieties of wine, it varies. It mostly has to do with the specific kinds of hops, malt, or other ingredents used to make the beer. Darker beers like stouts (think Guinness) use darker malts and more of them. The IPA style is all about using more hops of different varieties.

Like wine, certain kinds of beer are named after and mostly made within certain places. Breweries in New England largely make India Pale Ale beers that are sweeter than other IPAs, sometimes described as juicy, so beers that taste like that are known as New England Style IPAs. A Berliner-Weisse is, as the name implies, known for being made in Germany. However, add fruit to it, and it’s a Florida Weisse.

None of this information is particularly important beyond knowing that there is a beer for almost every palate. Ask a bartender, or a server. Give them a good idea of what you might be looking for.

There are a few tips for someone who isn’t familiar with these new beers worth knowing off the bat.  Most importantly, these are generally stronger than one might expect. Words like double and imperial mean that an offering is particularly high in alcohol.  “Light” refers to color, not being lower in calories or alcohol. “ABV” means alcohol by volume, the percentage of alcohol in a given beer. “IBU” is a measure of hoppiness, and the higher the number, the more earthy and piney a beer is likely to taste.

It is estimated that the craft beer business took in $26 billion in 2017. That number is of course projected to go up in 2018, a combination of more breweries opening their doors and existing ones growing their businesses. These account for about 135,000 jobs. Keep in mind these are just American numbers, but the United States is very much at the forefront of craft brewing.

It is an industry to watch, as the business world tries to figure out if craft beer is here to stay or a bubble waiting to burst. It’s a constantly changing industry, with just a few national brands giving way to more and suddenly a flood of beers with wild names, flavor profiles, and stories behind the brew.

Allianz Field To Host U.S. National Team In 2019

News broke Monday that Minnesota United’s incoming stadium Allianz Field will have the honor of hosting the United States men’s national team on June 18, 2019.

That date is almost exactly one month and one year from Monday. The match will be the USMNT’s opening match in the Concacaf Gold Cup, thus meaning it will be the national team’s first competitive game since October when the U.S. infamously fell to Trinidad and Tobago, eliminating them from qualification for the 2018 World Cup.

Miami? He already owns a club…

Yes, alongside legendary defender Paolo Maldini. They are not in the MLS, the USA’s top flight, but they are established in the country’s minor leagues, which are growing very slowly.

Silva has ploughed plenty of money already into the Florida outfit and their current stadium, which is shared with Florida International University, is named after him.

It is not the Miami club David Beckham is involved with, though. Beckham is still beavering away at getting his proposed MLS franchise off the ground.

https://www.bizjournals.com/tampabay/news/2018/05/14/phosphate-giant-mosaic-is-moving-its-headquarters.html

Phosphate giant Mosaic is moving its headquarters to Hillsborough County

The Mosaic Company (NYSE: MOS) will move its corporate headquarters from Minnesota to Hillsborough County, the company announced Monday evening.

Details of where the company will locate, when the move will occur and how many employees will be added remain under consideration, but the company intends to move all of its senior executives and their related functions to the new location once it’s determined.

The Fortune 500 phosphate mining company is currently headquartered in Plymouth, Minnesota.

Mosaic already has its largest domestic presence in Florida, including in Tampa. The company employs 3,000 Floridians and another 3,000 contractors.

The company’s 2017 economic impact in Florida included:

    $465 million in payroll
    $307 million in capital expenditures
    $41 million in land reclamation
$28 million in county tangible and real estate taxes
$40 million in state severance and sales taxes
$1.1 million to United Way organizations in Florida

“Recruiting corporate headquarters is a top priority of our three-year strategic plan,” said Dr. Alan F. List, chairman of the Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corp. and president and CEO of Moffitt Cancer Center, in a statement announcing the move. “Mosaic’s selection of Hillsborough County proves that this community offers the business climate, talent, cost advantages and quality of life that a Fortune 500 global headquarters operation requires.”

Moving to Hillsborough County means Mosaic will have a closer proximity to Mosaic Fertilizantes, which it acquired from Vale Fertilizantes in Brazil. The company will also be able to increase its presence in Central Florida.

“We believe locating our corporate office there will give us opportunities to amplify Mosaic’s presence and engage more closely with communities where we operate. With the cost savings we expect to achieve and the closer proximity to our Mosaic Fertilizantes business in Brazil, this move will drive improved efficiency and good value,” Mosaic President and CEO Joc O’Rourke said in a statement.

Mosaic is the world’s largest combined producer of potash and phosphates. Mosaic acquired Archer Daniels Midland Co.’s fertilizer distribution business in Brazil in 2014.

No incentives were offered in brokering the deal, the Tampa Hillsborough EDC said.

Hunahpu’s®

Style: Imperial Stout

Availability: Special Releases

In Mayan mythology, Hun Hunahpu was the father of the Mayan hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque. Hun Hunahpu, along with his brother Vucub Hunahpu, was tricked by the Dark Lords of the underworld and slain. Hun Hunahpu’s corpse morphed into a cacao tree, his head becoming a cacao pod, which in typically awesome mythology fashion, spit upon the hand of a young maiden named Xiquic who promptly became pregnant with the hero twins. The twins would ultimately grow up to avenge their father and uncle and defeat the Dark Lords and ascend the heavens to become the moon and sun. We brew Hunahpu’s® Imperial Stout once a year and release it only at the brewery on the second Saturday in March. We will continue to do so until the end of the cycle.

Hunahpu's Day 2018

Saturday, March 10, 2018

11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Last Call will be 3:45 p.m.

Many of our fans have been supporters of the brewery from our earliest days and have seen Hunahpu’s Day® evolve from a small group of friends and beer-lovers enjoying a unique Imperial Stout in a warehouse to one of the country’s premier craft beer events, with brewers and revelers traveling from across the globe to our Tampa home. Along the way we’ve put every ounce of our collective energy into making the festival exciting, dynamic, safe and enjoyable for those attending and to accommodate as many Cigar City Brewing fans as possible at the festival.  We’ve had highs (the 2016 festival, for instance) and lows (the 2014 festival, for example), but with each festival we look for ways to better serve our fans and supporters.

Integrity fears hit US leagues after sports betting ruling

INTEGRITY KEY TO MLB, MLS

A US Supreme Court decision allowing states to legalise sports betting has the country’s biggest leagues concerned — the NBA and NFL among those seeking a federal regulatory framework.

Major League Soccer said it is “supportive” of the decision in a statement, but noted, “we also believe that it is critical that state legislatures and other regulatory bodies work closely with the professional sports leagues in the United States to develop a regulatory framework to protect the integrity of each of our respective sports.” The National Hockey League said the decision “paves the way to an entirely different landscape — one in which we have not previously operated” in a statement and vowed to review league policies and practices to see if adjustments were needed.

David Beckham MLS team update: Major League Soccer expert reveals latest on Miami franchise

Alexi Lalas has given an update on David Beckham’s Major League Soccer team which was officially founded in the opening weeks of this year.

Miami will host the expansion franchise, which still is without a name despite the ownership group using both ‘Miami Vice’ and ‘Miami Current’ in presentations for city officials and potential investors.

Beckham received an option to purchase an expansion team for a reduced price when he joined the LA Galaxy in 2007

England legend Beckham leads the franchise with his business partner Simon Fuller and Bolivian businessman Marcelo Claure. There has been further investment since initial talks, with Masayoshi Son and brothers Jorge and Jose Mas added to the ownership group in December 2017.

The ownership group were officially awarded the expansion team on January 29, with plans to launch the team in the 2020 season.

However, there has been little news since the January unveiling, and former MLS player and current pundit Lalas has explained just what is going on with the Miami franchise.

Speaking to the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Lalas said: “The saga continues down in Miami. David is such a smart human being when it comes to the brand of Beckham. This has been a saga that has been going on for a number of years in Miami, but they are letting it play out.

“Major League Soccer and the Major League Soccer owners want David Beckham to succeed and they want to have him as part of that group.

“And Miami has always been a target in terms of a city.

“Getting in right in Miami though… that has proven much, much harder than I think he and many others realised.

“There has been movement - they finally announced it’s going to be the expansion team - and they are trying to get that stadium. That’s what is key.

“Because he got this sweetheart deal because of who he was and very good management, they are going to hold his feet to the fire and hope they get the best possible stadium.

“Because whatever type of business you are in, it’s all about location, location, location.

Beckham and his investment group bought the land pictured above to build a 25,000 seater stadium for the Miami franchise

“You’ve got to have a good stadium situation down there, and until they have it they are going to wait and wait and wait until they can say: ‘this is where the stadium is going to be and this is why we are going to do it’.

“They can’t afford to mess it up in that market.”

Stadium Lease Snapshot: Bridgeview and the Chicago Fire, and the Best/Worst Sports Lease in the United States

There are other things in this lease, but I think everyone gets the idea. It also may (I stress may) explain this latest news about a USL team starting in Chicago. Given the airtight nature of this lease, short of a catastrophic event, the only way to get the Fire out of Bridgeview, AND get a MLS team in Chicago proper, is to come to an agreement with Bridgeview. In light of the financial issues that are ongoing in Bridgeview, it is certainly possible; nothing prevents the parties from mutually terminating/amending the agreement. If the price is right.

Branding the Canadian Premier League: Kits (juneof86.com)

As a side note: The Rowdies really have one of the most iconic color/style combinations of American soccer.

Their kits would be a great addition to MLS.

Very true

I dig it.

Every highlight of theirs I've seen, I've always known who they were by their kits. A distinct color scheme is always good, and they nailed it.

Branding the CPL: kits

With the York9 FC launch set for Thursday, let’s conclude our three part discussion of branding for the Canadian Premier League by focusing on kits.

The difficulty when evaluating kits is that so much of their appeal is subjective. The quality of a logo in particular, or even a name, feels much more objective than what makes a great shirt design or overall look. One person’s classic may be dull to another. What might be a dated monstrosity in some eyes may be retro cool to others.

The Tampa Bay Mutiny had garish kits out of the gate, but given a couple of years to lock in on what was good about their colour scheme, they managed to look pretty good in some Gremio knock-offs. Ripping off another club’s kit is pretty lame, but the colour combination was nice even if the stripes were derivative.

The United Soccer League’s expansion into Chicago got a boost Wednesday when it was announced Cubs owner Tom Ricketts will be the new soccer team’s majority owner.

The effort to bring a second-division team to Chicago is a joint effort by developer Sterling Bay and Ricketts, who previously owned a minority stake in English side Derby County. The USL team is expected to begin play in 2021 with plans for a stadium on the proposed Lincoln Yards development.

Timbers beat Sounders in playoffs in inaugural season (August 12, 1975)

After compiling a 16-6 regular season record in their inaugural season in 1975, the Timbers went on to face the Sounders in the first round of the North American Soccer League playoffs. An incredible 31,000 fans crowded into Civic Stadium to watch the game. Portland and Seattle remained locked at 1-1 at the end of regulation, which sent the game to overtime. That's when Portland's Tony Betts headed in his iconic sudden-death, game-winning goal to give the Timbers a 2-1 victory. Portland went on to earn a spot in the Soccer Bowl before falling to the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

Lusitanos to Pioneers: Ludlow’s Enduring Passion

Youngsters begin arriving for practice at Lusitano Stadium in late afternoon. It’s spring and the weather’s starting to warm – the days are getting longer. Later, the lights go on and the Western Mass Pioneers take the field to get ready for their 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup opener against the Elm City Express on May 9.

A statue of Mozambique-born Eusebio da Silva Ferreira – the famed Black Pearl of Portuguese soccer who was known the world over as, simply, Eusebio – greets visitors at the stadium’s front gate. On the right is a barn-like concession area, also housing the Gremio Lusitano Wall of Fame with trophies reaching to the ceiling. Many check in with Western Mass general manager Greg Kolodziey, who played for the Lusitanos before the team became the Pioneers in 1998.

Soccer players have been coming here since 1922, when members of Gremio Lusitano, a culture and recreation club, lined out a dirt field on Winsor Street, across from the clubhouse. The club team competed against the Thistles, a local Scottish squad, and opposition from other New England mill towns. Soon, Gremio Lusitano FC was developing players for the U.S. National Team, advancing deep in both the U.S. Amateur Cup and National Challenge Cup, as the U.S. Open Cup used to be known (they are four-time quarterfinalists), and contending in the revamped American Soccer League.

In the 1940s and ‘50s, the stadium – then named Franklin Field, probably after nearby Franklin Street – attracted capacity crowds for matches, including several against top European teams like Everton FC. A crowd of 4,500 watched on when Lusitano played to a 3-3 draw with Jönköping FC of Sweden in 1951. At the time, Ludlow’s population was listed at just more than 8,000.

Whether fronted by the Gremio Lusitano teams of old or the current Western Mass Pioneers of PDL, Ludlow, Massachusetts, and its waves of Portuguese immigrants, have had a near century-long love affair with soccer. And it’s still going strong ahead of the 2018 U.S. Open Cup.

After the American Soccer League (ASL) folded its New England division in the 1950s, Gremio Lusitano’s team played in local leagues likes the Massachusetts & New Hampshire State Soccer Association, Connecticut Soccer League and the Luso-American Soccer Association. The club played host to friendlies with Sporting CP and other Portuguese clubs such as GD Chaves, SC Olhanense and CD Santa Clara, the visitors attracted by Lusitano Stadium, which the club calls the only soccer-specific stadium in New England.

During the 1970s, former Benfica superstar Eusebio arrived in Ludlow along with Humberto Coehlo and Antonio Simoes, all playing in the old North American Soccer League (NASL), for a friendly match against the Connecticut Bicentennials. Eusebio returned to Ludlow for a tribute in the early ‘90s. In 2016, two years after Eusebio’s death, Gillette Stadium had removed a statue of him – another copy stands in front of Estadio da Luz in Lisbon – and Gremio Lusitano came to the rescue.

Pereira, who set a Ludlow High School record with 50 goals in a season, might have been the first to follow a path from this club to the Ivy League to pro soccer (the latest would be New York City midfielder Thomas McNamara). “I was born in Portugal and came here when I was 12,” said Pereira, 64, who played at Brown University, then in the NASL and for the U.S. national team. “Fortunately, it was a very good soccer town and that made it easier for me to make friends. Ludlow is a good town to come to if you’re a soccer player.”

Rick Kriseman and St. Pete EDC head to San Francisco on first business development mission

ST. PETERSBURG — For its first-ever business development trip, the Greater St. Petersburg Area Economic Development Corp. headed to San Francisco, the tech-business world’s pricey capital, with a pitch about another bay area where sticker shock is not so big an issue.

"San Francisco is a very, very cool place, but oftentimes it’s hard to live there because of the sheer size of it and the cost," said EDC president J.P. DuBuque, who booked the trip after talking with local San Francisco ex-pats about why they moved from there to here.

DuBuque and Mayor Rick Kriseman had a total of 11 meetings with seven companies from Wednesday to Friday morning of last week. Some are looking at expanding operations outside of California. One is thinking about a wholesale move.

"Our goal was to make sure that we were on their radar and to see if we could give them enough information to get them interested in looking into a little deeper at the possibility of us being that east coast hub for them," Kriseman said.

No names are being released, but the companies they visited occupy various corners of the tech landscape — software development, fintech and technology manufacture — from Sausalito on the north to San Jose on the south. They’re growing, with annual sales in the $10 million to $50 million range. Some are or have been on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private firms.

"Talent was the primary thing they were talking about," DuBuque said Monday. Some were thinking about new offices for engineers, others for sales and administrative services jobs. Several mentioned a need to expand data analytics operations.

That was encouraging, Kriseman said, because data analytics has been targeted by the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce’s "Grow Smarter" strategy and has become a fast-growing employment sector for the city. Of about 3,000 net new jobs created in St. Petersburg from 2016 to 2017, nearly half were at data analytics companies.

Seven San Francisco tech companies on the hook for St. Pete

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman and St. Pete Economic Development Corp. CEO J.P. DuBuque have returned from San Francisco, after going on a business development mission last week to woo seven companies to the city.

The companies, which the EDC would not name because they are official job creation prospects, would bring to St. Pete anywhere from 10 to 100 jobs each and are technology-based firms.

“Some of them are hot. As in, we need to do something yesterday,” DuBuque said. “Others are asking to plan a visit.”

If the EDC is successful in attracting any of the businesses, DuBuque said it could be anywhere from three months to more than a year to see it happen.

The seven prospects would likely all be eligible for tax rebates under the state’s Qualified Target Industry program, but that depends on how many jobs a company creates, the average wage for employees and whether the industry meets an area’s job targets.

US Soccer Players - MLS has had the expansion game mostly to itself since their decision to revamp the league by doubling the number of teams. The expansion era is happening in isolation, save for the NHL adding Las Vegas this season. It's been a long time since the other North American pro sports teams decided expansion was nice to talk about in theory, but not their immediate goal.

City holding Major League Soccer open meetings to get input

Major League Soccer is looking to come to town but the big question is what do Austinites think? The city is holding a few open meetings to see what people want.

McKalla Place in northwest Austin is where the stadium could be built if a MLS team comes. The location was finally settled on after months of debate on where to build the stadium.

Ever since the announcement was made back in October that Austin could be getting the team there has been a lot of mixed feelings.

The people of Austin are invited to participate in open discussions about the chance of the stadium being built on publicly owned land.

"It fits well in our market," Kriseman said.

DuBuque and Kriseman pitched St. Petersburg’s growing pool of tech professionals, its quality of life and its affordability — of people, office space and residential real estate. DuBuque said executives took note when they heard that they could get a 3,000-square-foot condominium in a prime tower overlooking Tampa Bay for what they would pay for a three-bedroom home in a so-so neighborhood there. Similarly, the guys from St. Petersburg told them Class A office space in downtown St. Petersburg goes for about a third of what they pay for Class B space on a corporate campus there.

Before the meetings, none of the California companies had given much thought to St. Petersburg, DuBuque said. Now all say they are considering it, and DuBuque is looking to arrange some visits.

Kriseman and DuBuque also visited:

• The San Francisco headquarters of PandaDoc, a document automation company that added a St. Petersburg office in 2017.

• San Francisco Mayor Mark Farrell. That meeting was brokered by Tim Schar, SunTrust Bank’s market president for the Tampa Bay area, who has San Francisco connections from his days as an executive with ApplePie Capital.

• A Jabil innovation center similar to a lab planned for Jabil’s new corporate campus in St. Petersburg.

The nonprofit EDC paid for Kriseman’s airfare, hotel room and meals. DuBuque declined to say how much the organization spent.

A second business development mission is likely this fall. For that, the EDC could look at New York, Chicago or Atlanta. St. Petersburg competes against cities like Austin, Charlotte and Nashville for corporate expansions, and, DuBuque said, "I want to make sure that the places where they’re coming from know we’re an option."

Bill Edwards announces concert series to boost summer business in St. Pete [Video]

Lauryn Hill, Poison, and 3 Doors Down are just a sampling of the eclectic array of concerts coming to Al Lang Stadium and the Mahaffey Theater this summer. While tickets have already been for sale for a few weeks, St. Pete entrepreneur and Rowdies owner Bill Edwards officially announced the “Al Lang Live” series today at a gathering in the Mahaffey atrium.  Edwards spoke for about 10 minutes, emphasizing his commitment to respecting the surrounding residents with regard to noise and traffic.  He explained that the “speakers will be pointed downward” to limit the reach of the noise. In addition, roaming staff members with decibel meters will continuously monitor noise in the surrounding neighborhood; they’ll be connected via walkie-talkie to the sound engineers who can lower the volume on a moment’s notice if necessary.  The concerts, held mostly on weekdays, will also beginning earlier, around 6:30, to keep them from cutting into bed time.

After the announcement, Edwards took questions from the audience; for the most part, they touched on parking and programming goals for the series.  Many local residents (including restaurant magnate Steve Westphal) stood to praise Edwards.

Watch the entire talk and Q & A in the (poor quality cell phone) video below.

Edwards launches concert series with Live Nation at downtown St. Pete venues

Tickets have been on sale for weeks, but on Thursday St. Petersburg businessman and philanthropist Bill Edwards officially announced an expanded schedule of live music and entertainment events in downtown St. Petersburg.

Big 3 Entertainment, Edwards' entertainment and venue management company, launched the series with the Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts. Shows are being presented in conjunction with Live Nation Florida, according to a statement.

Events will be held at both Al Lang Stadium and the Duke Energy Center for the Arts – Mahaffey Theater.

The capacity for Al Lang is 7,227; for the Mahaffey Theater it's 2,031, according to the Tampa Bay Business Journal's Event venues list.

One year ago, the Tampa Bay Rowdies' owner, the Edwards Group, got voter approval allowing the team to enter into a long-term lease with the city at the stadium. Edwards, who was reportedly looking to sell a stake in the Rowdies, has said his group would privately fund $80 million in renovations in order to attract Major League Soccer. The renovations would increase stadium capacity from 7,000 to 18,000 and open the stadium to views of Tampa Bay.

Summer concert series coming to St. Petersburg's Al Lang Stadium

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- It’s no secret that developer Bill Edwards has had an ongoing love affair with St. Petersburg.

Developer Bill Edwards announces summer concert series at Al Lang Stadium
Rowdies owner promoting events during summer lull
Al Lang Live, Mahaffey Theater events to start in June
Tickets are on sale now through Ticketmaster

The owner of the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Edwards has invested in the Mahaffey Theater, Al Lang Stadium and the Sundial retail development.

His next big venture is to bring more music to downtown starting this summer.

On Thursday, Edwards announced a summer series of concerts at Al Lang that will include music guests Poison, Lauryn Hill and Counting Crows, among others.

Edwards says he wanted to place an emphasis on entertainment during the summer months, when business and tourism in the city tends to hit a lull.

“We’re sitting here with businesses that are somewhat empty,” Edwards said. “And we need the business so the whole idea of this is to have a have summer concert series that we’re about to announce that will revitalize downtown during the weekdays.”

Noise ordinance questions linger

The summer series comes as city leaders still try to hammer out a noise ordinance that will accommodate both businesses and the growing residential population downtown.

Edwards said he's taking the noise into consideration in planning the concerts.

“I can't do much about where the park is and where I have to put the stage,” said Edwards. “But I can make a difference in how loud I make it, and how I angle the speakers, and how I make it early.”

Downtown Neighborhood Association President Matt Weidner said it all remains to be seen and, more importantly, heard.

“Of course, the devil is in the details,” says Weidner. “We'll have to wait and see what the details are. For now, the important thing is that we all want to engage in a community dialogue and discussion about it.”

The summer series also includes events at the Mahaffey that will include Donnie & Marie Osmond and former Vice President Joe Biden and his “American Promise” tour.

Tickets for the upcoming Al Lang Live shows can be purchased at ticketmaster.com or by calling 800-745-3000. For tickets to Mahaffey Theater events, visit themahaffey.com or call 727-892-5767.

'Ibrahimovic was exactly what the MLS needed' - Tampa Bay star Joe Cole

The former Chelsea attacker has lauded the move of the Swede to play in the United States, which he believes has already had an impact on the sport

LA Galaxy striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has made a "massive impact" in American football, according to former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole.

Ibrahimovic scored twice in the first LA derby between Galaxy and Los Angeles FC, with one of the strikes a sensational long-range effort.

The former Manchester United striker has already appeared on prime time American television, too, sitting down for an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

And Cole, who is approaching his second full year at the Tampa Bay Rowdies, believes Ibrahimovic's personality has already captured the imagination of American football fans.

"He’s had a massive impact. He is a massive player. Massive personality," Cole told Goal. "It is exactly what the MLS needed and I feel like he will have a big impact both on and off the pitch for both the league and the Galaxy. Nowadays, branding and things like that have become very important.

"I think we have a very individualistic culture and the clubs out here they need people of this stature who bring the following they have, to bring even more attention. I think it will be a great lifestyle for Zlatan and I am sure he will love it.

"It is a wonderful way of life and I think the players appreciate the anonymity that the United States offers, to a certain degree at least, compared to the melting pots of Europe and the intensity of the football. That won’t last forever though, that’s for sure.

"The lessons they have learned from the 60s, 70s and 80s when they brought the names over, they are now being smart about it. I think that clever business people are involved. It is going in the right direction and I would advise anyone to come out here."

Cole played 56 times for England and he won eight major honours over the course of his career that saw him play for West Ham United, Liverpool and Aston Villa, as well as at Chelsea.
