With NHL now in Las Vegas, how far behind is Major League Baseball?

Back in early 2015, Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman saw her battle to bring professional sports to her city take a very serious hit. After a contentious fight to gain public approval for a taxpayer-funded, 24,000 seat stadium in the downtown area to house a Major League Soccer team in 2017 or 2018, Las Vegas was informed by MLS that they were no longer in consideration.

Although it was a disappointment, Mayor Goodman remained strong in her hope to move her city into the world of professional sports.

“I would continue to support major league sports, in particular, soccer,” Goodman said after announcing the MLS rebuff. “I will keep fighting, as long as I breathe.”

Just a little over a year later, Goodman scored a major victory in bringing professional sports, and the eventual possibility of Major League Baseball, to the American city most prominently known for gambling.

Enter billionaire businessman Bill Foley. His website, VegasWantsHockey.com, spearheaded an initiative to get the National Hockey League to consider expanding for the first time since the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild were introduced to the league, all the way back in 2000-01.
